00:00:00.000 A new terror alert has been issued by Homeland Security tonight.
00:00:03.280 Pete Williams is here.
00:00:04.580 Pete, what do we know about this?
00:00:06.500 Well, DHS says this new terrorism advisory is not based on any actual threats or plots,
00:00:10.980 but it says there's a rise in anti-government rhetoric.
00:00:13.820 Some of it is opposition to COVID public health rules like mask and vaccine measures.
00:00:18.660 Some calls for violent action are based on claims of election fraud
00:00:21.840 or a belief that Donald Trump can be reinstated.
00:00:24.860 And DHS says the coming 20th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks
00:00:28.280 and religious holidays later this year could be catalysts for violence.
00:00:32.240 The last terror advisory was issued in May.
00:00:34.760 It expired today.
00:00:35.760 This new one says domestic extremism remains a threat priority.
00:00:40.120 So it's important to know that this is not based on any threats.
00:00:43.900 This is based on analysis of the threat picture,
00:00:46.860 not on any imminent warning that something could happen here.
00:00:50.560 The last of these terrorism advisories was issued in May and it expired today.
00:00:56.480 So this is really, in essence, a renewal, an update of it.
00:01:00.360 Homeland Security says there are several concerning factors.
00:01:03.700 There's continuing grievances over COVID restrictions, which has stirred up a lot of opposition.
00:01:09.200 There's the continuing efforts by foreign influencers to try to stir up trouble in the U.S.
00:01:14.400 There's the coming 20th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks with al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
00:01:20.600 now once again sort of firing up its propaganda machine.
00:01:23.960 And there are approaching religious holidays and the opening of school
00:01:27.720 and the possibility of school shootings.
00:01:30.020 So for all those reasons, DHS says this is the terror threat picture that we face.
00:01:35.340 But again, it's not a warning that there's attacks that they know of.
00:01:38.940 It's more of here's the threat picture.
00:01:41.220 That's why we're continuing this advisory.
00:01:43.040 That's why we're continuing this advisory.
