Summary

A new astronomy course at Cornell University asks the question, is there a connection between the cosmos and the idea of racial blackness? What does that even mean, and why does it matter? What does it have to do with race?

00:00:00.000 Well, this next story fits perfectly in with all the things we've been talking about here so far
00:00:03.660 regarding critical race theory and how it's snuck into academia.
00:00:07.680 An astronomy course at the prestigious Cornell University concerned about racism in the universe,
00:00:14.180 that's right, not even just here on planet Earth, they asked recently the question,
00:00:18.000 is there a connection between the cosmos and the idea of racial blackness?
00:00:22.860 The course is titled Black Holes, Race and the Cosmos,
00:00:26.480 and the catalog description for the course reads as following.
00:00:30.480 Conventional wisdom would have it that the black in black holes has nothing to do with race.
00:00:35.560 Surely there can be no connection between the cosmos and the idea of racial blackness, can there?
00:00:41.480 Contemporary black studies theorists, artists, fictional writers implicitly and explicitly poised just such a connection.
00:00:48.860 Theorists use astronomy concepts like black holes and event horizons to interpret the history of race in creative ways,
00:00:55.800 while artists and musicians conjure blackness through cosmological themes and images.
00:01:02.980 Co-taught by a professor in comparative literature and astronomy,
00:01:06.720 this course will introduce students to the fundamentals of astronomy concepts through readings in black studies.
00:01:13.560 Texts include works by a bunch of anti-white writers,
00:01:17.520 and they will also play hip-hop music by Sun, Ra, Outkast, and Janelle Monáe.
00:01:23.120 And this, they leave for the last in the course, because it is an astronomy course after all,
00:01:27.540 but it turns out they're also going to be talking about astronomy concepts,
00:01:30.940 and they will include things like electromagnetic spectrum, stellar evolution, and general relativity.
00:01:36.000 Oh, good.
00:01:37.300 So, Heather MacDonald, who has written numerous books, including The War on Cops,
00:01:41.500 wrote about this in City Journal, where she said,
00:01:44.060 Today's academic charlatanism consists in part in mistaking rhetoric for knowledge and words for things.
00:01:51.300 This sleight of hand is particularly prevalent in matters relating to race.
00:01:56.280 Hunter College professor Philip Ewald argues that the concept of tonal and harmonic hierarchies in music theory
00:02:02.620 is stand-in for pernicious racial hierarchies.
00:02:06.520 Remember the keys on the piano, right?
00:02:08.960 The white ones are the bigger ones, and then the black ones are the minor ones.
00:02:12.780 So they're seeing specters of racism everywhere.
00:02:15.400 The racial avengers are tearing down every institution associated with Western civilization
00:02:20.140 and what white people have created simply because of its whiteness.
00:02:24.400 Science have previously, of course, stood as a guard against such metaphorical and magical thinking.
00:02:30.000 But bit by bit, our field of science is succumbing to it.
00:02:45.780 White rage, or white backlash, is the violent resistance that some white people resort to
00:02:51.200 when there is some progress made in regard to racial equality.
00:02:54.240 It is the doubling down on white supremacy and racism
00:02:57.800 when it is made evident that we are not going to tolerate this system of oppression anymore.
00:03:02.920 It is a reminder to people of color that white people are still in power, and they should be.
00:03:08.540 It is an attempt to maintain the hierarchy of power
00:03:11.060 when it is made evident that this hierarchy is actually really harming marginalized identities.
00:03:17.000 Christian backlash is the violent response, the response that some Christians resort to
00:03:21.260 when it is made evident that Christianity is abusive.
00:03:24.300 It is the demonizing of anybody that attempts to speak against Christianity.
00:03:28.580 It is the destruction of their reputation, and it is the silencing of these people at whatever the cost.
00:03:33.900 It is what some abusive Christians resort to, to be able to protect the good reputation of Christianity.
00:03:39.840 Rage and backlash are dangerous, and their manifestations harm people.
00:03:51.260 Rage and backlash Evaluation
