In this episode of the shameless berger, I discuss a recent Reddit post from a Redditor named who wrote in to ask a question. What is the connection between whiteness and intelligence and productivity? And why is it that people of color complain that they don't have an equal chance in life?

00:00:00.000 hi folks i am the shameless berg i hope you're doing well today so today i want to get into 0.96
00:00:05.140 this story from reddit true off my chest black people oppress themselves they certainly do 0.99
00:00:11.120 obligatory i am black and before anyone tries to say i have a pass or something yes i'm clearly 0.99
00:00:16.640 black not one of the black people that could maybe pass for white none of you fucking can okay there's 0.97
00:00:21.880 no such thing that's probably just some cope that you guys talk about with each other we can all see 1.00
00:00:26.620 it you still got like the bell pepper nose thing we can tell by your jawline and your facial structure
00:00:32.060 and stuff none of you passes white remember folks half black and half white is still 100 brown not
00:00:38.360 only are they not oppressed they're given all sorts of advantages and preferential treatment in society
00:00:42.860 and they get to pretend that they're not then on top of that they get to pretend that we're the
00:00:47.600 recipients of these things and we're taking them at their expense somehow i'm thinking back to what
00:00:52.320 people are saying about their oppression things like they can't get the same jobs they can't go
00:00:56.320 to the same schools etc but here's me i'm a guy with darker skin i hate saying i'm african-american
00:01:01.680 because i have never even seen africa and i hate saying i'm black because i'm an arts student that
00:01:06.000 did self-portraits and never used the color black besides my hair i follow your logic i get it you
00:01:10.960 sound like you know a colorblind hyper individualistic white guy with average intelligence i i can see where
00:01:17.660 you're coming from here but make no mistake you are black all right you are african just like i am 0.93
00:01:23.480 inescapably white and european and i'm reminded by the collective black demographic that that's the 0.98
00:01:29.480 case i can't get away from it you can't get away from it not saying i hate being me so don't get that 0.95
00:01:34.600 mixed up i just don't like being defined by my skin tone quote-unquote black male but even with my skin
00:01:40.720 color and being raised in what could probably be considered the hood of my city i speak properly
00:01:46.120 oftentimes people say i speak white which i hate i graduated top 20 in my high school
00:01:51.400 caught senioritis real bad and received scholarships to a very well-known prestigious predominantly
00:01:57.000 white university that every single one of you will know if i said the name i am currently being
00:02:01.660 paid 9 000 plus a year to go to that college well and they always do that stuff if you bother
00:02:06.480 to speak proper english or you show an interest in any real education they call that acting white
00:02:11.880 gee i wonder why why is there this sort of implicit connection between whiteness and intelligence and
00:02:18.300 productivity hmm i just can't think of it he goes on meanwhile other people of my color complain that
00:02:24.020 they don't have an equal chance in life well i mean they kind of don't okay you're born with
00:02:29.500 certain capacities and limitations all right i mean you clearly are within the 10 of black people for 0.99
00:02:36.000 whom the other 90 make look bad and stupid but the fact of the matter is even though you perceive for 0.99
00:02:42.460 yourself that you had a chance in life it's because you're intelligent it's because you're above average 0.99
00:02:47.440 in your community it's because you're smarter than they are okay in general they don't have an equal
00:02:52.700 chance they don't have an equal chance either to you or to us as a collective and they don't want to
00:02:57.900 deal with it okay they do not want to confront it but it's the truth it's the fact and that's why when
00:03:02.520 you're trying to rise high they want to make sure that you stay down with them because not everybody
00:03:07.040 can be equally raised but everybody could be equally lowered it honestly upsets me plenty of
00:03:13.000 people in high school would just ignore the teacher and smoke in the bathroom or skip then wonder why
00:03:17.860 life is treating them unfair after i mean yeah i even remember that kind of stuff from my high school
00:03:23.220 days i was up to no good and i had a lot of black and brown friends we were all up to the same
00:03:28.260 shenanigans and guess what we all got in the same trouble for it i didn't get a slap on the wrist i
00:03:33.300 didn't get any different consequences i didn't get any different outcomes but guess what later on in
00:03:37.940 life i made a lot of different decisions and i've gotten very different outcomes since then and see
00:03:42.200 they also went on to make very different decisions in their own lives and the outcomes and output of their 0.99
00:03:46.920 lives reflect those decisions but back when we were acting equally stupid we got equally stupid results 0.98
00:03:53.160 it's amazing how that works isn't it and when i started to make better choices i got better results 0.96
00:03:58.420 and when they didn't start making better choices they kept getting bad results i'm not oppressing
00:04:03.640 them do you see how that works even with all of that said here's the thing and anyone is allowed
00:04:08.240 to correct me as i have not actually done detailed research firstly twitter this was back when it was
00:04:13.720 still called twitter primarily we have all probably heard of twitter and many people use it but i'm
00:04:18.180 surprised to come across what's known as black people twitter which is the part of twitter that has all the
00:04:23.120 black people or something like that i'm just throwing it out there but i don't think that a
00:04:26.860 white mexican asian person made black twitter it is not a different app by the way for those that 0.87
00:04:31.840 don't know i always thought that was funny you'd hear the constant references black twitter this black 0.95
00:04:36.540 twitter that oh black twitter saying this oh wait till i show this to black twitter all right black 0.73
00:04:41.520 twitter do your thing as though you guys created something as though you invented something designed 1.00
00:04:46.960 something coded something you didn't it's just this collective hive mind of brainwashed black people 1.00
00:04:52.700 and it's just it's a left-wing echo chamber basically or what was black people twitter a 0.92
00:04:57.780 left-wing echo chamber just dark colored that's all it was and it's also a great way for them to enjoy
00:05:02.780 double think of segregating themselves while also crying about the principle of segregation and
00:05:08.680 discrimination they really like to have it both ways and black twitter is a perfect example of that 1.00
00:05:13.180 he goes on something i've noticed these people around me do is create communities places where all the
00:05:18.520 black people stick together and do whatever but why is there a need to create a community why is 0.99
00:05:22.740 there a reason to create an entire term black people twitter the honest truth is they'll say
00:05:27.220 they feel like they need these safe spaces these affinity spaces but in my opinion they're allowed to
00:05:32.220 exist not so much for the benefit of black people but to constantly remind white people that they're
00:05:37.220 being downgraded like look they can have these spaces but you can't in the name of equity i've seen a
00:05:42.340 lot of examples like from university affinity spaces okay and i would see white people raise the issue
00:05:47.640 like why do you guys get to have a black affinity space we don't get to have a white affinity space 0.97
00:05:52.160 and you would hear some stupid shaniqua be like yeah that's because y'all already got everywhere else 0.99
00:05:57.100 everywhere else already y'all's not everything about y'all we gotta have our own spaces y'all got y'all 0.99
00:06:02.040 own spaces everywhere else y'all's as though everywhere else isn't actually just a common area where all the
00:06:07.820 shaniquas and tyrones are also free to walk around just because you've entered a space and there's a lot of 1.00
00:06:12.540 white people there doesn't make it a white exclusive space it doesn't make it a white affinity space
00:06:16.880 you're allowed to walk right on through meanwhile we're not allowed to have our own spaces you know
00:06:21.340 we can't have our own affinity spaces you can have those things you can have historically black churches
00:06:26.240 historically black colleges you can have all these things but white people can't have them it's 0.99
00:06:30.600 amazing that you get to have all this but you get to gaslight and project and have double think about 0.73
00:06:35.220 it at the same time and i'm so fucking tired of it so he goes on it's literally just twitter and 0.95
00:06:39.660 you are deciding to separate yourself from it by creating this space you're essentially saying 0.89
00:06:43.380 us black people are not like you and separating themselves from the rest of the people they're not 0.98
00:06:47.840 like us though so let's be honest like your your perception here is correct that is the statement 0.55
00:06:52.100 they're making but i don't think they even realize the full gravity of the statement they very much are
00:06:56.420 not like us we are very very different and it's not just skin deep okay he accurately points out here
00:07:01.840 meanwhile if a white people twitter would be made it's racist and so what only white people allowed here
00:07:07.620 they're separating themselves from everyone else then wondering why they're not seeing the same in the public eye
00:07:12.080 well it's true they want to do this and then they want to cry about the legacy of discrimination
00:07:16.620 the legacy of segregation but as long as you do them in the name of equity i've noticed about the
00:07:21.200 left it's like everything that i say is universally and always evil 100 of the time and it's terrible
00:07:26.920 and it's awful and look how offended i am by it and the more offended i am by it the more righteous 0.98
00:07:32.260 and moral i am yeah all you fucking people and then want to turn around and cry to us about 0.99
00:07:36.760 segregation and discrimination and all this bullshit you know inclusivity inclusivity anywhere there's 1.00
00:07:43.700 too many white people congregated in one place that's not unaccosted or unaccompanied by black 1.00
00:07:49.420 people it's a huge fucking problem then another example is me going off to college and losing 1.00
00:07:55.000 touch with people i used to go to high school with because all they're doing now is smoking and throwing 0.99
00:07:59.320 their life away while i'm trying to create a life for myself by doing that i'm told things like you
00:08:04.500 really betraying your own kind i also hate because we're not some collective species we just share
00:08:09.800 melanin i'm not related to you and my kind is not black humans you sound like a colorblind idealistic 0.99
00:08:15.620 white kid from the 90s i understand all that shit but the fact of the matter is you are related to them 0.98
00:08:20.320 you are of the same kind you're of the same blood you're of the same ancestry these are inescapable 0.99
00:08:25.160 connections that you have with them all right even though you're individual so he goes on or when they say
00:08:31.820 why don't you just go to an hbcu and the best of all we don't claim you anymore or call me racist
00:08:37.660 names amazing that they'll break solidarity with you over trying to make something out of yourself
00:08:42.740 isn't that incredible and they make it sound like we're the ones doing that to you dude i have no
00:08:47.360 ill will for you and now i'd rather you go to africa of course if you're gonna be here i applaud you
00:08:52.960 wanting to go do something with yourself i applaud you wanting to get education and to get into the
00:08:57.940 career field and to become a productive member of society okay i wouldn't take that from you i don't
00:09:03.980 want to hold you down from that isn't that amazing i'm this avowed white racist okay and i don't want
00:09:09.200 to do that i'm not interested in holding you back in that way but your brothers in the struggle are 0.98
00:09:13.940 so what the fuck is the deal and can you guys stop bitching at me about it i mean i'm literally being 0.98
00:09:19.100 less oppressive in my stance towards you as an avowed white racist encouraging you to go do something 0.99
00:09:24.260 than your brothers in the struggle are isn't that incredible but i'm still gonna have to go on 0.99
00:09:28.760 hearing all this bullshit all the time about how racist and awful we are i mean yeah i'm racist but 0.88
00:09:33.480 you know what does that really mean if i'm racist but i still would prefer that you went on to do 0.99
00:09:38.000 better things than your brethren because why not of course if you have the intelligence and the ability
00:09:42.920 please go do that i would much rather you be doing that than you know bumming around being some sort of 0.98
00:09:47.720 hoodlum so he says tldr black people divide themselves from the rest of the world and then look around in 0.98
00:09:53.200 shock when they realize there's a divide between them and the world it's incredible isn't it they 0.98
00:09:57.280 do all this stuff and they wail and piss and moan and cry about segregation and discrimination and
00:10:02.100 jim crow laws and the legacy of you know blah blah blah blah blah but then they'll go and do this
00:10:06.220 because as long as it's in the name of equity there is absolutely nothing that they cannot and will not
00:10:11.360 justify doing to you in the name of equity and there is no level of hypocrisy or double standards
00:10:16.760 projection gaslighting too extreme for them to use in the in the pursuit of equity equitable outcomes
00:10:23.880 and so i think that's what you're brushing up against here man you've got that hyper individualized
00:10:29.360 attitude where you're not really thinking as a part of your race and i get that i lived that way for a
00:10:34.720 long time your racial brethren kind of took that away from me as an option and now i have to think 0.98
00:10:39.100 about it in these terms and now i kind of wouldn't go back even if i could because i've realized
00:10:43.520 the truth of things but i can certainly comprehend your frustration here i understand where you're
00:10:48.840 coming from you know i just i encourage you to understand that yeah they are your race they are
00:10:54.200 your ethnicity but yeah i mean if you do have the ability to rise up higher than than they can then do
00:11:00.160 it you know they can complain all they want but the fact of the matter is everybody cannot be equally
00:11:05.400 elevated but the ones that are capable of rising higher they can be brought down to be equally low
00:11:10.520 and that's exactly what they want you know i don't think they want you to escape the ecosystem
00:11:15.680 of whining and crying and blaming and begging for things i think they want you to just be a part of
00:11:22.340 that and i think you see that too and i can't blame you for not wanting to identify with it it makes
00:11:26.800 sense to me but i agree with your conclusion here black people oppress themselves i don't do it i have no 0.70
00:11:31.860 interest in i you know i just want them away from me you know i want them away from me my community 0.99
00:11:37.100 my state my country i don't know just i don't get the fuck away from me i don't have any ill will for 0.94
00:11:42.460 you actually please just go somewhere else and do better all right just go somewhere else and do 0.96
00:11:46.660 better i evidently have better wishes for you than your brethren do isn't that funny anyway folks
