The farmers are coming to Ottawa to protest Justin Trudeau's refusal to exempt them from the carbon tax. Will the Prime Minister cave in to their demands? Or will he continue to stand firm in his opposition to a carbon tax carve-out for farmers?
00:04:01.160Many people living in rural areas across the country, including many farmers, continue to be stuck heating their homes with home heating oil.
00:04:08.560It is dirtier, it is more expensive, and it is something that is expensive to replace.
00:04:16.500That is why, Mr. Speaker, we are stepping up with measures that are going to deliver heat pumps to families right across the country, the 1.2 million households across this country, in every part of this country, relying on home heating oil, so we can help them fight climate change and save money at the same time.
00:04:35.000That's our plan. The Conservatives have no plan.
00:04:42.780The Honourable Leader of the Opposition.
00:04:47.280Our common sense plan is found in Bill C-234, which would give another carve-out to farmers on the carbon tax.
00:04:58.400The Prime Minister has claimed that he won't cave again. He says there will be no more carve-outs.
00:05:04.900We are asking him to keep in mind that there are two million people who have to go to the food bank every month because of his policies.
00:05:10.940Will he put his ego and pride aside and ask his liberal senators to pass common-sense Bill C-324 to axe the tax and create a carbon tax carve-out for our farmers?
00:05:26.020You know, you've got to say, too, the bill is so simple, it's just 2-3-4. Even Trudeau can remember that. He's not very good with numbers, but he can probably remember that much.
00:05:39.900You notice how he's gasping, too, while he's answering the questions? Sure sign that he's not telling the truth.
00:05:45.560And he's, once again, telling people, go buy your heat pumps.
00:05:50.140Yeah, right. That's going to help farmers.
00:05:57.700Mr. Speaker, farmers across this country know the costs of climate change.
00:06:02.520They know the costs of extreme weather events, whether it be floods or fires or more intense storms.
00:06:09.720Farmers are worried about their future, worried about their kids' future, worried about the country's future.
00:06:14.220That's why we put forward a plan that is reducing our emissions and growing our economy at the same time, while putting more money in Canadians' pockets.
00:06:24.380The Conservatives have no plan to fight climate change, no plan for the future of the economy, no plan for future generations.
00:06:33.060We will continue to do what's necessary to support Canadians, including farmers, long into the future.
00:06:39.140The Honourable Leader of the Opposition.
00:06:44.720The Prime Minister won't answer a simple question.
00:06:46.780It's about the common-sense Conservative bill to carve out farming from the carbon tax.
00:06:52.460But I understand why he feels he's in a bind.
00:06:55.480Because his Environment Minister said,
00:06:57.140As long as I am Environment Minister, there will be no more exceptions to carbon pricing.
00:07:03.780That implies that he would resign if there was another carve out.
00:07:09.700Will the Prime Minister sacrifice his crazy carbon tax minister and support our common-sense bill to take the tax off?
00:07:18.380Well, no wonder Giebel, the crazy carbon tax minister, Stephen Giebel, was out lobbying last week.
00:07:34.340And this week, trying to ensure that Senators don't vote for Bill C-234.
00:07:41.560Because after the bill went through hell in the handbasket, getting amended, it's back to normal, and we want the bill to pass.
00:07:49.280It will exempt farmers from the carbon tax.
00:07:56.600Supposedly, the Conservative Party will want to bring us back to the Stone Age, Mr. Speaker.
00:08:00.500He somehow thinks the Conservatives want to bring us back to the Stone Age, even though it's the Liberals with the kooky climate change minister who wants to freeze us, shut off the lights, turn off the gas, stop driving cars, and live in caves.
00:08:22.020That, to me, sounds like the Stone Age.
00:08:24.540So I don't know what he's talking about, and he doesn't either.
00:08:27.520It's all bloody political rhetoric that is meaningless after a while.
00:08:35.120But as I said, Giebel has been up to lots of, shall we say, backroom diplomacy, to be kind.
00:08:43.220He's been pressuring Senators to vote against this bill.
00:08:49.260So let's hear a little more from the Environment and Climate Change Minister, who's been very busy for the past week or so.
00:08:56.800lobbying on behalf of the Cabinet, on behalf of the government, with Liberal Senators.
00:09:03.820And you'll find out he's not even sure how many Senators he's been talking to, but give or take about six.
00:09:11.860And he clearly has a very, very bad agenda here.
00:09:16.100Thank you, Minister Guilbo, if you could explain what you were saying to Senators that you've been talking to about Bill C-234 and how many Senators you've been speaking to about it.
00:09:53.300You're the guy who wants to leave Canadians out in the cold, who thinks Canadians' hunger, Canadians' warmth doesn't matter as long as we're fighting climate change, as long as we're upholding your narrow ideological perspective.
00:10:10.980Included 97% of fuels used on farms, because at the time when we put in place carbon pricing in Canada, the price on pollution, we realized that there was no alternatives for these applications.
00:10:27.320So the price on pollution in the agricultural sector only applies to 3% of...
00:10:47.400And if he was so concerned, if he really believed for a minute that it only applied, the carbon tax only applied to 3%, why is he so concerned about this bill passing?
00:11:01.100Why does he want to defeat this bill so badly?
00:11:04.620Obviously, he really is concerned about getting this bill stopped, because he knows this will exempt farmers from a carbon tax that currently affects 100% of fuels.
00:11:31.620The Liberal government has become pollution, but carbon is not pollution.
00:11:35.840Of fuels that are being used, where alternative technologies are available.
00:11:41.680And we've, in the case of grain drying, for example, and we've provided more than half a billion dollars of funding to support farmers in that transition, number one.
00:11:54.420Number two, it's, I mean, we're against the creation of a new exemption.
00:12:00.680We were against Bill C-234 when it was in the House of Commons.
00:12:19.860The bill passed, the House of Commons, despite your idiocy and despite the lack of compassion and caring by the Liberal government, by Justin Trudeau's government.
00:12:56.260But people should remember that since 2015, there are, I mean, there are a handful, but very, you know, only a handful of Liberal senators.
00:13:06.480The senators we've nominated as a government since 2015 are independent senators.
00:14:03.360And then we'll need to make our own decision as to how we act once the final decision by the Senate has been made, which hasn't been the case.
00:17:48.140But more importantly, I need your financial support.
00:17:53.220I hate to ask, but that's what I'm doing.
00:17:55.660I'm in a decision to pursue independent media because I believe it was the best possible route for me to take as a journalist and as a concerned citizen of Canada.
