The Alberta Roundup with Isaac Lamoureux - Alberta won’t be bullied by Ottawa： Smith

00:00:00.000 accused Ottawa of once again embarking on an unconstitutional, unrealistic, and costly path.

00:00:05.920 In a joint statement with Alberta Environment Minister Rebecca Schultz, the duo said, quote,

00:00:10.960 the federal government has unilaterally established new methane emissions rules and targets to help

00:00:16.760 win international headlines. Smith and Schultz also said the new regulations won't help anyone

00:00:22.000 except Guibo's post-politics career. And while we're on the topic of COP28, just ahead of that

00:00:28.500 conference, Premier Smith announced tax credits to incentivize carbon capture technology. Here's

00:00:34.720 the Premier on CTV News explaining that decision. Well, what I'd say is that we own the resource,

00:00:40.980 the Alberta government, and Albertans own the resource, 85% of it. And we ask the energy

00:00:46.100 companies to develop the resource on our behalf. And we get a lot of revenue as a result of it. I

00:00:51.280 think this year in combination, our royalty revenue, as well as our revenue from corporate income tax,

00:00:57.420 along with personal income tax, is somewhere in the order of $20 billion. And so if we can

00:01:01.580 incentivize the construction of carbon capture utilization and storage so we can have the

00:01:06.720 best barrels and the greenest barrels and ensure that that revenue stream continues for the next

00:01:11.700 20, 30, 40 years or more, then it seems to me it's a pretty good investment. Finally, moving into the

00:01:16.640 controversy of the week, Calgary Mayor Yodi Gondek refused to attend the annual menorah lighting at Calgary

00:01:22.660 City Hall, saying it became, quote, too political after organizers decided to use the event to show

00:01:28.720 support for Israel. In a lengthy statement posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, the mayor wrote,

00:01:34.400 quote, when I was asked to speak weeks ago, it was to bring traditional greetings, celebrating

00:01:40.060 Hanukkah and the spirit of Calgary's Jewish community. The last minute change goes against

00:01:44.960 the original intention and has left me feeling let down by leadership. I am saddened that this change

00:01:50.600 makes it impossible for me to attend tomorrow's event, and I am incredibly concerned that people

00:01:55.740 wishing to celebrate Hanukkah will have their good intentions compromised. Gondek went on to say that

00:02:01.180 by becoming political, the event went against the mission to, quote, uphold diversity and inclusion.

00:02:07.700 She added, quote, further, in the many conversations I have had with Jewish and Muslim leaders,

00:02:12.960 the outcome has been agreement to engage in an interfaith manner, to move forward in peace and

00:02:17.820 prayer. The change nature of tomorrow's event creates a divide and forces people to choose a

00:02:22.980 side. There are no sides to choose when terrorists incite violence by murdering innocent Israelis,

00:02:28.460 knowing retaliation will follow and lead to the murder of innocent Palestinians.

00:02:32.980 It is absolutely possible to condemn acts of violence and war without choosing one community

00:02:37.780 over another. We have a moral imperative to do so. The killing must stop in Gaza because it is

00:02:43.900 spreading division and hatred far and wide. Eradicating Hamas must come in a different

00:02:49.120 form than mass casualties. The Calgary Sun spoke to a rabbi and organizer of the event who said the

00:02:55.360 day's central meaning remains religious and spiritual. Rabbi Maneke Mutzav said, quote,

00:03:01.040 it is a celebration of Hanukkah and bringing Hanukkah to life. We celebrate light over darkness and light

00:03:06.840 over death. It's not a demonstration for Israel, but at the same time, of course,

00:03:12.160 were supporting Israel. In her decision not to attend the event, Gondek pointed to a poster

00:03:17.100 advertising the ceremony, which said supporting Israel on it. It also included the popular Hebrew

00:03:22.260 phase, meaning the people of Israel live. Those of you who are watching on video can see that poster

00:03:27.560 now. Comment under the video below. What do you think of Gondek's decision not to attend or speak

00:03:32.680 at the ceremony? Okay, guys, moving into our weekly comment roundup. I'm so glad to be doing this

00:03:37.720 again. It's always one of my favorite parts of the show. User James D27KY said, quite ironic what the

00:03:44.720 environment minister says about it being illegal, considering he's an ex-convict. He's of course

00:03:50.300 referring to environment minister Stephen Gubot's claims that the Alberta Sovereignty Act is illegal.

00:03:54.980 And in response to this comment, I'm once again going to show you this excellent photo of Stephen

00:03:58.980 Gubot in an orange jumpsuit. He looks a little bit like a madman in this photo. I just see those eyes.

00:04:04.980 Those are crazy eyes right there. User Jamie Mays 6065 said, I only approve of photo raider in school

00:04:11.800 zones, but nowhere else because outside of school zones would be fishing. God keep our land glorious

00:04:17.320 and free. I would still like to see them banned altogether, but maybe I will feel a little bit

00:04:21.980 differently when I have a child in school. I'll let you guys know in a couple of years. And finally,

00:04:27.320 YouTube hates us 2651 said, keep the camera that pegged Chris de Freeland at 142 kilometers the hour,

00:04:34.580 the day she left her bike at home. This is my favorite comment of the week. Of course,

00:04:38.600 these cameras are only useful should they be catching elected officials, breaking the laws

00:04:44.200 that they created. All right, everyone. Thanks so much for tuning in. That's all I have for you today.

00:04:49.140 As always, if you're able to support our work, you can do that over at donate.tnc.news.

00:04:54.080 I will see you guys next week. Have a great weekend and God bless.
