00:00:00.000 Hey everyone, welcome back to the Alberta Roundup.
00:00:02.100 I'm your host, Rachel Emanuel.
00:00:03.960 Did it snow where you guys live this week?
00:00:06.020 I cannot believe the weather
00:00:07.120 that we're having here right now.
00:00:08.980 I am very grateful that it did not snow
00:00:11.080 in my Calgary neighborhood.
00:00:13.360 I don't know what to make of you Albertans,
00:00:14.840 but this is some crazy weather
00:00:16.320 and you guys just seem to soak it up.
00:00:18.900 I know it seemed like a quiet week
00:00:20.600 in Alberta politics this week,
00:00:22.100 but I promise you I have some very juicy content
00:00:25.240 for you today.
00:00:26.320 Here's a look at today's topics.
00:00:28.640 An unvaccinated woman who's been denied
00:00:30.680 a life-saving organ transplant
00:00:32.240 now has the option to receive that transplant in the US.
00:00:35.980 Danielle Smith met with her federal counterparts this week
00:00:38.780 and the United Conservative Party government
00:00:40.760 is following on its campaign promise
00:00:43.120 to pause the fuel tax till the end of the year.
00:00:46.240 I have some more details
00:00:47.660 on the Alberta arson investigation.
00:00:49.980 And finally, Dina Hinshaw is back in the headlines.
00:00:53.260 You guys are not gonna wanna miss this.
00:00:55.580 All that and more happening now on the Alberta Roundup.
00:00:57.920 Okay, guys, up first, we're gonna start with a story
00:01:09.440 of an unvaccinated Canadian woman
00:01:11.300 who's been denied a life-saving organ transplant.
00:01:15.360 And she has now been given new hope by the United States.
00:01:19.100 You guys follow this story with such interest
00:01:21.860 and I'm so glad that I finally have a positive update for you.
00:01:25.200 This week, Sheila Annette Lewis announced
00:01:27.600 that an American hospital, specifically one in Texas,
00:01:30.840 has agreed to give her the organ transplant
00:01:33.060 that she needs to continue living.
00:01:36.020 However, it is not going to come at a cheap cost.
00:01:39.760 It is going to cost her about 600,000 USD.
00:01:43.340 Lewis told me that before she can even be put on the donor list,
00:01:46.820 she will require $100,000 American worth of testing
00:01:51.020 to prove that her body is still healthy enough.
00:01:54.060 So she is looking to fundraise this entire amount.
00:01:56.980 It is a massive amount of money, you guys.
00:01:58.940 If you wanna support her, you can find her GoFundMe.
00:02:01.760 We're gonna link it up here so you can take a look at that.
00:02:04.620 I will say that it was climbing very steadily.
00:02:06.900 So she needs that first $100,000.
00:02:08.900 They won't even begin the testing
00:02:10.340 until she pays the full amount.
00:02:11.920 When I looked at the GoFundMe on Wednesday,
00:02:14.180 it was sitting at under $25,000.
00:02:16.400 I went again and looked Thursday morning
00:02:18.820 and it was sitting at about $35,000.
00:02:21.620 So an increase of $10,000 in less than 24 hours.
00:02:25.460 That's pretty good.
00:02:26.460 I hope that we can continue pushing that forward for her
00:02:28.920 so that she can get the treatment
00:02:30.400 that she so desperately needs.
00:02:32.060 As I have explained to you guys on this show many times before,
00:02:35.260 Lewis was removed from the top
00:02:36.840 of the organ donor transplant list
00:02:38.680 because she refused to be inoculated against COVID-19.
00:02:42.800 And in November, the Alberta Appeal Court admitted
00:02:45.360 that it is a virtual certainty
00:02:46.840 that she will die without that organ.
00:02:49.660 The doctors, the names of the hospital,
00:02:51.380 and the organ that she needs
00:02:52.700 are all under a publication ban.
00:02:55.120 Moving into our next story here,
00:02:56.920 Alberta Premier Daniel Smith
00:02:58.240 met with her federal counterparts.
00:03:00.360 That's Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson
00:03:03.060 and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister
00:03:05.220 Dominic LeBlanc this week
00:03:06.820 to discuss Ottawa's plans for energy policies.
00:03:10.340 There is no way we will agree
00:03:12.140 to shutting down our oil and natural gas industry
00:03:14.660 phasing out our oil and natural gas workers.
00:03:16.420 It's not going to happen.
00:03:17.660 That's a look at what Danielle Smith was saying
00:03:19.620 just hours ahead of that Monday meeting.
00:03:22.340 In her comments to media,
00:03:23.400 she also reiterated that she will not be pulling
00:03:26.500 Alberta's oil and gas jobs.
00:03:28.980 She did say she's willing to work
00:03:30.580 with the federal government on lowering emissions.
00:03:33.320 We know that she has promised net neutrality by 2050,
00:03:36.520 and she said her and the federal government
00:03:38.720 can find common ground on this.
00:03:40.760 So part of my discussion with them this afternoon
00:03:44.940 is going to be that we put forward
00:03:48.040 our emissions reduction and energy development plan.
00:03:50.560 We are going to take the lead
00:03:52.780 on developing an emissions reduction plan
00:03:55.000 that works for Alberta
00:03:55.840 while maintaining our economic growth.
00:03:58.200 And we need to bring them into alignment
00:04:00.500 with what it is that we want to do
00:04:02.480 and get them back to their original commitment
00:04:04.480 of carbon neutrality by 2050.
00:04:06.380 We think that that's achievable,
00:04:08.660 especially with so many industries
00:04:10.180 that are putting forward their own plans.
00:04:12.500 Pathways has a 2050 target.
00:04:14.880 Air Products has a 2050 target.
00:04:16.460 Dow Chemical has a 2050 target.
00:04:18.480 So I think part of this dialogue
00:04:20.600 is just figuring out how we can align
00:04:22.800 on a 2050 goal and then work together
00:04:25.400 on making sure that the pace of that,
00:04:27.920 of achieving that goal is realistic.
00:04:30.200 And that's what our conversation is going to be about.
00:04:32.700 Following the meeting,
00:04:33.600 the Premier's office sent out a statement
00:04:35.000 saying that Smith had conveyed
00:04:36.800 that she would like to work
00:04:37.980 with her federal counterparts
00:04:39.020 on that goal of net neutrality by 2050,
00:04:42.260 but that the proposed oil and gas
00:04:44.180 natural emissions cap
00:04:45.580 and the 2035 net zero power grid regulations
00:04:48.880 would damage Alberta's economy.
00:04:51.120 In a statement, the Premier said,
00:04:52.660 quote,
00:04:53.500 I instead propose the immediate establishment
00:04:56.120 of a bilateral working group
00:04:57.760 between the Canadian and Alberta governments
00:04:59.900 for the purpose of completing work
00:05:01.860 on a collaborative approach
00:05:03.200 to incentivize carbon capture,
00:05:05.800 utilization and storage,
00:05:07.140 and other emissions reducing infrastructure
00:05:09.060 for the oil and natural gas
00:05:11.020 and electricity sectors,
00:05:12.380 as well as to set reasonable
00:05:13.680 and achievable milestones
00:05:14.780 for emissions reductions
00:05:15.900 in these sectors through to 2050.
00:05:19.340 The federal ministers committed
00:05:20.600 to take Alberta's working group proposal
00:05:22.420 back to the federal government
00:05:23.680 for a prompt response
00:05:25.340 in the coming weeks.
00:05:26.240 Another good news story
00:05:27.640 coming out of the province this week
00:05:29.140 is that the United Conservative Party government
00:05:31.180 has followed through
00:05:32.460 on its campaign promise
00:05:33.760 to pause the fuel tax
00:05:35.420 until the end of the year.
00:05:37.120 I suspect we could all use
00:05:38.360 whatever savings
00:05:39.220 we could get a hold of right now.
00:05:40.500 I know that I definitely could.
00:05:42.320 Premier Smith made that announcement
00:05:43.660 in Calgary also on Monday.
00:05:45.380 Here's what that sounded like.
00:05:46.560 While the cost of living continues to rise
00:05:48.520 and life gets more expensive,
00:05:50.120 Alberta's government will be there to help.
00:05:52.260 And while Albertans continue to be burdened
00:05:54.220 by a rising federal carbon tax,
00:05:56.740 increasing the cost of groceries
00:05:58.220 and making it more expensive
00:06:00.000 to drive your vehicles,
00:06:01.260 heat your homes
00:06:01.960 or run your businesses,
00:06:03.780 Alberta's government will do what we can
00:06:05.440 to help families manage.
00:06:07.360 And that's why I'm so pleased to say
00:06:09.160 that today we are filling
00:06:10.140 the first of our campaign commitments
00:06:11.860 to do just that.
00:06:13.440 We are keeping our promise to Albertans
00:06:15.200 by suspending the collection
00:06:16.480 of the provincial fuel tax
00:06:17.880 for another six months
00:06:19.000 and ensuring that you continue
00:06:20.580 to save the full 13 cents per liter
00:06:22.540 when you fill up at the gas station.
00:06:24.780 This will ensure that you get
00:06:25.700 to keep an extra $6 to $18 in your pocket
00:06:28.460 every time you fill up your vehicle.
00:06:30.540 Pausing the full fuel tax
00:06:31.800 on gasoline and diesel
00:06:32.860 for the rest of the calendar year
00:06:34.440 will put hundreds of millions of dollars
00:06:36.140 back into the pockets of Albertans.
00:06:38.560 Finance Minister Nate Horner
00:06:40.260 said that Albertans have saved
00:06:41.660 $1.5 billion
00:06:43.200 through the fuel tax relief.
00:06:45.700 The government estimates
00:06:46.580 that this latest extension
00:06:48.160 will result in more savings
00:06:49.740 of $520 million.
00:06:51.520 Moving into our next story here
00:06:53.560 you guys were really interested
00:06:54.940 in Danielle Smith's comment
00:06:56.440 on arson investigation
00:06:57.400 so I have a few more details
00:06:59.460 for you on that.
00:07:01.060 I asked the Premier's office
00:07:01.920 for more details
00:07:02.740 about what this would entail
00:07:03.640 specifically a lot of you
00:07:04.840 were wondering
00:07:05.260 why we couldn't rely
00:07:06.380 on arson investigators
00:07:07.420 from within the province
00:07:08.700 and I received a response
00:07:10.520 from Forestry and Parks Minister
00:07:12.080 Todd Lowen's office.
00:07:13.720 To start, the Minister's office
00:07:15.060 said Alberta investigates
00:07:16.360 all forest fires
00:07:17.560 to determine origin and cause.
00:07:19.920 The office also said quote
00:07:21.020 while we do have investigators
00:07:22.840 in Alberta who are qualified
00:07:24.260 given the high number
00:07:25.540 of active wildfires
00:07:26.780 so early this season
00:07:28.020 we required additional support.
00:07:30.400 Specifically, the Alberta government
00:07:31.560 requested help
00:07:32.500 from the Canadian Interagency
00:07:34.320 Forest Fire Center in Winnipeg.
00:07:36.600 The province has brought
00:07:37.580 in an additional
00:07:38.120 four arson investigators
00:07:39.440 that includes two from New Brunswick
00:07:41.080 and two from BC.
00:07:42.500 The investigators will determine
00:07:44.140 whether the fire
00:07:45.160 was caused by humans.
00:07:47.220 Determining whether the fire
00:07:48.220 was deliberately set
00:07:49.580 referring to arson
00:07:50.740 is the job of the RCMP
00:07:52.420 and law enforcement.
00:07:53.980 The Alberta RCMP
00:07:54.820 told me that
00:07:55.380 the vast majority
00:07:56.080 of the wildfires
00:07:56.900 are considered to be
00:07:57.680 from natural causes
00:07:58.780 like lightning
00:07:59.820 but they are investigating
00:08:01.220 12 that could be related
00:08:03.080 to human causes.
00:08:04.500 Okay you guys
00:08:05.020 moving into the controversy
00:08:06.240 of the week
00:08:06.840 you guys are not
00:08:07.960 going to want
00:08:09.100 to miss this story.
00:08:10.440 You might have seen
00:08:11.180 some outrage
00:08:12.140 break out online
00:08:13.180 earlier this month
00:08:14.080 when it was revealed
00:08:15.080 that Alberta Health Services
00:08:16.480 had given
00:08:17.100 Dr. Dina Hinshaw
00:08:18.180 a new contract.
00:08:19.880 You guys remember Hinshaw
00:08:21.040 she was Alberta's
00:08:22.020 chief medical health officer
00:08:23.580 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
00:08:26.100 We can thank her
00:08:27.060 for lockdowns,
00:08:27.960 restrictions
00:08:28.320 and of course
00:08:29.120 vaccine mandates
00:08:30.060 not to mention
00:08:31.100 collecting
00:08:31.660 well over half a million dollars
00:08:33.540 from Albertan taxpayers
00:08:34.620 in 2022.
00:08:36.260 Of course
00:08:36.720 Danielle Smith
00:08:37.740 campaigned on being
00:08:39.020 anti-lockdown
00:08:39.880 and anti-vaccine mandates
00:08:41.140 and was quick to show
00:08:42.820 Hinshaw the door
00:08:43.740 when she became premier
00:08:45.140 in November.
00:08:46.300 So you can only imagine
00:08:47.480 everyone's surprise
00:08:48.360 when it appeared
00:08:49.060 that AHS had
00:08:49.940 rehired Hinshaw.
00:08:51.820 The independent media outlet
00:08:53.320 The Counter Signal
00:08:54.000 was the first outlet
00:08:55.240 to report
00:08:55.820 that AHS had
00:08:57.260 given Dina Hinshaw
00:08:58.580 this new job offer.
00:09:00.180 But then
00:09:00.480 something very curious
00:09:01.540 happened.
00:09:02.060 AHS said that
00:09:02.920 Dr. Dina Hinshaw
00:09:03.720 is not employed
00:09:04.880 with the organization
00:09:05.780 causing The Counter Signal
00:09:07.520 to retract its story.
00:09:09.580 But now
00:09:10.040 it turns out
00:09:10.620 based on reporting
00:09:11.300 from CBC this week
00:09:12.440 that The Counter Signal
00:09:13.640 was correct
00:09:14.260 all along
00:09:14.980 that Dina Hinshaw
00:09:15.920 did have a job
00:09:17.120 with AHS
00:09:17.700 and that offer
00:09:19.140 was rescinded
00:09:20.160 at some point
00:09:20.960 following public backlash.
00:09:23.540 Let's dive into
00:09:24.400 the details here.
00:09:25.780 This week
00:09:26.100 CBC News reported
00:09:27.040 that Hinshaw
00:09:27.540 appeared to have a job
00:09:28.480 with the
00:09:28.820 Indigenous Wellness Corps
00:09:30.240 a program of
00:09:31.660 Alberta Health Services
00:09:32.560 focused on
00:09:33.280 Indigenous health care.
00:09:34.580 The exact position
00:09:35.300 Hinshaw would have been given
00:09:36.260 was public health
00:09:37.540 and preventative medicine lead.
00:09:39.340 It was a part-time role
00:09:40.620 and she would not
00:09:41.700 have had anyone
00:09:42.520 reporting to her.
00:09:43.980 When AHS issued
00:09:45.180 a statement saying
00:09:46.060 Dr. Hinshaw
00:09:47.140 is not employed
00:09:48.120 by AHS
00:09:48.960 a statement
00:09:49.820 which caused
00:09:50.520 The Counter Signal
00:09:51.080 to retract
00:09:51.960 their story
00:09:52.600 by the way
00:09:53.360 CBC says
00:09:54.940 that that statement
00:09:55.880 was technically true.
00:09:57.860 Oling
00:09:58.140 it's unclear
00:09:58.800 exactly when
00:09:59.940 Hinshaw's offer
00:10:00.780 was revoked.
00:10:02.080 CBC reported
00:10:02.880 quote
00:10:03.200 whether the decision
00:10:04.440 to revoke
00:10:05.100 Hinshaw's job offer
00:10:06.220 came before
00:10:07.140 or after that leak
00:10:08.140 is unclear.
00:10:09.040 I'm sure
00:10:10.040 that you guys
00:10:10.500 will all be
00:10:10.880 very happy
00:10:11.500 to learn
00:10:11.920 that Hinshaw
00:10:12.580 is not going
00:10:13.380 to have
00:10:13.880 a job
00:10:14.640 with Alberta
00:10:15.260 Health Services
00:10:15.800 after all
00:10:16.500 but it is
00:10:17.380 very concerning
00:10:18.240 that AHS
00:10:18.780 appeared to have
00:10:19.660 lied
00:10:20.220 or intentionally
00:10:21.060 misled
00:10:21.760 the Independent
00:10:22.580 Media
00:10:22.880 Alit
00:10:23.140 The Counter Signal

00:10:24.900 a tiny
00:10:25.880 tiny fraction
00:10:26.800 of the resources
00:10:27.540 that CBC News
00:10:28.700 has
00:10:29.100 and then only
00:10:30.140 a couple of weeks
00:10:30.820 later
00:10:31.020 this same story
00:10:32.000 appears in CBC News
00:10:33.360 only with a very
00:10:34.420 different tone
00:10:35.180 one that laments
00:10:36.780 the loss
00:10:37.380 of Hinshaw
00:10:38.000 as someone
00:10:38.520 who would be
00:10:39.260 good to rally
00:10:40.140 and work with
00:10:40.860 Indigenous leaders
00:10:41.820 I have to say
00:10:42.700 that I feel like
00:10:43.100 this was overall
00:10:43.800 a very positive show
00:10:44.960 it's always nice
00:10:45.620 to have some good
00:10:46.360 headlines
00:10:46.820 now it's time
00:10:47.840 to move into
00:10:48.420 our comment roundup
00:10:49.400 we'll see if you guys
00:10:50.680 have been
00:10:51.460 just as positive

00:10:56.700 Alberta needs
00:10:57.360 to start up
00:10:57.860 its own social media
00:10:58.840 site
00:10:59.200 and then
00:10:59.980 block Facebook
00:11:00.980 social media
00:11:02.100 has become
00:11:02.720 a public service
00:11:03.680 and should not
00:11:04.680 reside as a private
00:11:05.760 entity
00:11:06.200 I have to say
00:11:07.800 that I really
00:11:08.300 disagree with you
00:11:08.960 here
00:11:09.140 I do not think
00:11:09.820 anything improves
00:11:10.820 when the government
00:11:11.400 becomes involved
00:11:12.240 I think that
00:11:13.240 private companies
00:11:14.260 should stay
00:11:14.880 private companies
00:11:15.800 let the governments
00:11:16.820 keep their hands
00:11:17.600 off of them
00:11:18.140 if the private
00:11:18.680 companies can't
00:11:19.380 survive on their own
00:11:20.200 they don't deserve
00:11:21.200 federal subsidies
00:11:21.980 yes I'm looking
00:11:22.820 at you
00:11:23.420 Canada's airline
00:11:24.480 industry
00:11:25.060 as for Facebook
00:11:27.040 definitely sucks
00:11:27.980 but we all have
00:11:28.640 the choice
00:11:29.040 simply not to
00:11:29.980 use it
00:11:30.480 and when we look
00:11:31.240 at something like
00:11:31.760 Twitter
00:11:32.020 it did suck
00:11:32.740 for so long
00:11:33.380 and now
00:11:33.780 Elon Musk
00:11:34.340 has purchased it
00:11:35.140 and he's making
00:11:35.860 a lot of really
00:11:36.480 good changes
00:11:37.080 so I'm happy
00:11:38.060 to see that
00:11:38.660 I do not want
00:11:39.700 to see the
00:11:40.060 governments get
00:11:40.640 involved
00:11:41.020 anywhere else
00:11:42.140 they already
00:11:42.480 have their hands
00:11:43.180 in absolutely
00:11:43.660 everything
00:11:44.180 and whenever
00:11:44.560 the government
00:11:44.960 gets involved
00:11:45.520 it means more
00:11:46.240 regulation
00:11:46.820 and more money

00:11:51.780 should have
00:11:52.600 resigned after
00:11:53.220 losing her first
00:11:54.020 election
00:11:54.440 and the damage
00:11:55.540 of her incompetent
00:11:56.420 NDP
00:11:56.780 quote colleagues
00:11:57.860 unquote
00:11:58.360 inflicted on the
00:11:59.460 private sector
00:12:00.120 taxpayers in our
00:12:01.180 Alberta
00:12:01.580 I completely
00:12:02.900 agree with you
00:12:03.500 I think that
00:12:04.380 a leader
00:12:04.900 of a political
00:12:05.420 party should
00:12:06.000 always resign
00:12:07.200 after losing
00:12:08.740 government
00:12:09.140 it's different
00:12:09.660 if you lose
00:12:10.180 an election
00:12:10.660 in which you
00:12:11.400 had just become
00:12:12.080 the party leader
00:12:12.780 sometimes I think
00:12:13.740 it's fair to give
00:12:14.280 someone two chances
00:12:15.300 probably almost
00:12:16.260 never three
00:12:16.940 but if you lose
00:12:17.840 government
00:12:18.160 I think it's
00:12:18.680 appropriate that
00:12:19.280 you resign
00:12:20.020 at that time

00:12:23.980 it would be
00:12:24.220 really useful
00:12:24.720 if the Alberta
00:12:25.200 roundup had
00:12:25.860 timestamps to
00:12:26.560 the individual
00:12:26.960 stories
00:12:27.540 even though
00:12:28.500 I understand
00:12:29.020 the implication
00:12:29.600 of that being
00:12:30.140 you don't want
00:12:30.600 to watch the
00:12:31.100 whole show
00:12:31.660 how offensive
00:12:32.460 I actually think
00:12:33.600 this is a great
00:12:34.120 suggestion
00:12:34.560 I love being able
00:12:35.500 to skip through
00:12:36.160 videos to find
00:12:37.320 exactly what I'm
00:12:37.980 looking for
00:12:38.520 and I will see
00:12:39.240 if we can
00:12:39.660 implement this
00:12:40.300 and finally
00:12:40.880 referring to
00:12:41.540 the conservative
00:12:42.000 coalition that
00:12:42.740 we talked about
00:12:43.220 last week
00:12:43.740 Paul Carson
00:12:44.600 7984 says
00:12:46.280 let's just call
00:12:47.180 it a new name
00:12:47.900 new
00:12:48.760 absascon
00:12:50.040 maybe Manitoba
00:12:50.820 wants to join
00:12:51.400 as well
00:12:51.920 Trudeau can keep
00:12:53.280 Quebec and
00:12:54.220 Tardario
00:12:54.860 well I really
00:12:56.080 like the names
00:12:56.580 that you have
00:12:57.040 for Quebec and
00:12:57.540 Ontario
00:12:57.860 I think we
00:12:58.340 could do a
00:12:58.880 little bit
00:12:59.380 better for a
00:13:00.020 new name for
00:13:00.740 a fully
00:13:01.880 conservative
00:13:02.260 country or
00:13:02.940 conservative
00:13:03.340 coalition
00:13:03.880 whatever we
00:13:04.700 want to
00:13:04.960 speculate on
00:13:05.500 here
00:13:05.800 you guys can

00:13:07.080 the video

00:13:09.420 are if we
00:13:10.200 were to just
00:13:10.540 say hypothetically
00:13:11.240 speaking start
00:13:12.380 our own very
00:13:13.220 conservative
00:13:13.640 country based
00:13:14.480 off of the
00:13:14.940 values that
00:13:15.400 Alberta currently
00:13:16.060 has what
00:13:17.100 should we call
00:13:17.600 that country
00:13:18.140 leave your
00:13:19.000 comments on
