00:00:00.000 Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is at war with the federal government again over emissions caps,
00:00:05.360 telling them that the cap will kill production and do more harm than good,
00:00:09.280 compared to if they just let Alberta implement best technologies,
00:00:12.820 which would allow the province to get to net zero by 2050.
00:00:16.300 Following the federal government's newest cap announcement on Monday,
00:00:19.740 Smith held a press conference, and honestly, I've never seen her as mad as she was in that case. 1.00
00:00:24.960 She looked like she was ready to explode. 1.00
00:00:27.200 On the show today, we'll also be discussing the United States' new president,
00:00:31.360 my experience at the Alberta AGM, where Smith got a 91.5% approval rating, and more.
00:00:48.400 Let's hop right into that first story now.
00:00:50.660 So Smith pulled no punches at her Monday press conference,
00:00:53.800 where she likened Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Environment Minister Stephen Guibault's
00:00:58.100 newly released draft oil and gas cap to a scorched-earth economic policy
00:01:03.080 meant to unfairly target one of Canada's most prosperous provinces.
00:01:06.860 I talked about how angry Smith was, but I'll let you take a listen and come to your own conclusion.
00:01:11.860 Here's some of what she said.
00:01:13.140 I'm pissed.
00:01:14.340 I'm absolutely angry, because we've been working with these guys for two years,
00:01:18.940 because we have a plan that would reduce emissions responsibly by 2050,
00:01:24.080 and they continue to act like they're working collaboratively with us,
00:01:27.880 and then they come out with exactly the same policy that they put forward a year ago,
00:01:32.300 with no changes whatsoever,
00:01:33.800 and then they're trying to mislead the public about its intent,
00:01:38.040 and mislead the public about our true record.
00:01:41.180 In 2018, we had 159.3 megatons of emissions from our oil and gas sector.
00:01:47.600 In 2022, the most recent stats available, 158.3 megatons.
00:01:52.740 So he is not even telling the truth.
00:01:54.640 We are seeing an increase in production and a decrease in emissions,
00:01:57.640 exactly like we said we would, because we're relying on technology.
00:02:00.780 We also know that we can decrease global emissions
00:02:03.860 by getting more of our cleaner, burning oil and natural gas to the world.
00:02:08.000 They know that.
00:02:08.920 We've told them that.
00:02:09.740 The public knows that.
00:02:11.060 And yet they persist in this pathway,
00:02:13.220 which will harm our province and harm the country.
00:02:15.200 And that is not acceptable.
00:02:16.420 Not for a government that is at, what, 20% in the polls?
00:02:19.800 Not for a government that is on its way out the door.
00:02:22.080 It cannot destroy the most important industry in the country
00:02:26.500 by targeting our province with this kind of unilateral action.
00:02:31.240 We just won't stand for it.
00:02:32.860 The Liberals' most recent cap comes despite various organizations
00:02:36.640 warning the Feds that any such cap would devastate the Canadian economy,
00:02:41.120 reducing the GDP by trillions and wiping out hundreds of thousands of jobs.
00:02:45.660 Look, I see another one of these reports come out every single day.
00:02:49.020 An S&P study showed that if implemented,
00:02:51.320 the cap would cut production by 2 million barrels of oil daily.
00:02:54.240 Smith said that half of that, 1 million barrels of oil daily,
00:02:58.100 would result in losing $3 billion to $7 billion a year.
00:03:01.780 This is the entire budget for roads and bridges,
00:03:04.440 income assistance for the severely handicapped,
00:03:06.680 and post-secondary budgets.
00:03:08.220 I mean, they would all be wiped out.
00:03:10.000 Smith added that $28 billion would disappear from Alberta's GDP annually,
00:03:15.000 with Canada taking a $97 billion yearly hit.
00:03:19.000 If that isn't bad enough,
00:03:20.240 Smith said that the cap violates Canada's constitution,
00:03:24.240 which grants provinces exclusive jurisdiction over non-renewable natural resource development.
00:03:29.660 Alberta's premier had the following to say of the prime minister.
00:03:32.840 Take a listen.
00:03:34.100 Ultimately, this cap will lead Alberta and our country into economic and societal decline.
00:03:40.020 And once again,
00:03:41.140 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is putting reckless policy ahead of the needs and concerns of everyday Canadians.
00:03:46.700 I made note that he would do this on his way out the door.
00:03:49.840 It's like a bad renter who's burning the furniture on their way out.
00:03:53.300 He needs to call an election now to seek a mandate to do this not only to our province but to the country.
00:03:59.800 Once again, Ottawa is putting up roadblocks instead of providing solutions to global energy security.
00:04:05.320 And make no mistake, Alberta and Canada have the ability to provide security to the world.
00:04:12.180 Instead, Justin Trudeau continues to choose to outsource that duty to provide safe, affordable, reliable,
00:04:20.680 and responsibly produced oil and gas to dictators and less clean producers around the world.
00:04:26.600 And tweaks won't work.
00:04:27.480 Smith went on to say that Guybeau's policies would cost Canadians $419 a month.
00:04:36.620 However, despite all the mounting evidence against their war on oil and gas,
00:04:41.200 the Liberals are pushing forward.
00:04:43.040 Smith said of Guybeau,
00:04:44.020 This is not responsible policy.
00:04:46.980 This is a vendetta.
00:04:48.560 He has a deranged vendetta against Alberta.
00:04:51.040 It's very obvious.
00:04:52.240 We've been watching it for some time.
00:04:53.820 Smith responded to Guybeau's accusation that she, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre,
00:04:59.440 and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe don't believe in climate change.
00:05:04.020 She said,
00:05:04.960 That is just absolute nonsense.
00:05:07.620 And he continues to say such things because he's trying to demonize our province.
00:05:12.200 And he's trying to demonize our sector.
00:05:14.280 And he's trying to justify unconstitutional policy.
00:05:17.780 And it's absolutely unacceptable.
00:05:19.420 She said,
00:05:20.380 We expect our national leaders to engage in nation building as opposed to nation destruction.
00:05:26.700 And that is what they are doing by having a particular type of emissions cap targeted to
00:05:31.540 our particular industry that is going to impact our particular province for no other reason than
00:05:36.380 to be vindictive.
00:05:37.880 Smith said she would immediately task her justice minister to take the feds to court.
00:05:43.240 She will also begin drafting a motion under the Alberta Sovereignty Within the United Canada Act
00:05:47.760 immediately.
00:05:49.760 Alberta's joint statement that was released said,
00:05:51.420 We will not stand idly by while the federal government sacrifices our prosperity,
00:05:55.600 our constitution, and our quality of life for its extreme agenda.
00:05:59.340 Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre joined in on the fun.
00:06:02.960 He said,
00:06:03.360 The government's own analysis shows that their energy cap will cost billions of jobs, wages,
00:06:09.360 and production.
00:06:10.420 After Trudeau's minister said the opposite,
00:06:12.820 He's already pushed half a trillion dollars of our investment to the US.
00:06:16.500 Now he wants to hand over more jobs to the Americans. 0.58
00:06:19.920 That's right, Poilievre.
00:06:21.060 Look, the eco-idealogues in the liberal government, like Guibault, have these extremist policies that
00:06:26.420 they say help the environment.
00:06:27.740 But of course, they have no proof of that.
00:06:30.260 On the bright side, with President Donald Trump recently getting re-elected,
00:06:34.380 he has vowed to bring back the Keystone Pipeline,
00:06:36.820 which will bolster Alberta and Canada's oil and gas sector, and thus the economy.
00:06:41.540 Speaking of Trump, let's hop into our next story here,
00:06:44.400 which has unsurprisingly been dominating the news cycle to the extent that other news almost
00:06:50.240 doesn't exist.
00:06:51.780 But we're still digging deep at True North to bring you the important Alberta news that you need to know.
00:06:56.460 This news is, of course, that Donald Trump has been re-elected as President of the United States.
00:07:01.880 While the presidential race has been called, small variations are still occurring, but
00:07:05.860 the New York Times stopped its live presidential forecast at 545 Eastern Time in the morning
00:07:11.940 on November 6th after officially calling the election for Trump.
00:07:16.000 However, the Times estimates Trump to win 312 electoral seats, and 270 seats are required
00:07:22.740 to secure the presidency.
00:07:24.220 Harris took a while to concede, which some people criticized her for, but eventually did,
00:07:28.900 and she emphasized a peaceful transfer of power.
00:07:31.700 Trump addressed his supporters on Tuesday while accompanied by his family and running mate J.D.
00:07:36.240 Vance.
00:07:36.980 Trump said his presidency will, quote,
00:07:39.040 truly be the golden age of America.
00:07:41.680 I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor being elected your 47th
00:07:46.480 president and your 45th president, Trump said.
00:07:48.960 He added, quote,
00:07:50.300 And every citizen, I will fight for you, for your family and for your future.
00:07:55.800 Every single day, I will be fighting for you with every breath in my body.
00:08:00.220 During the campaign, Trump pledged to combat the country's illegal immigration crisis, controlling
00:08:05.480 inflation, and creating more job opportunities for Americans.
00:08:09.480 Republicans will also win control of the Senate, with at least two seats having flipped the Republicans
00:08:14.720 from the Democrats.
00:08:16.520 A majority in the Senate requires 51 seats.
00:08:19.640 The Republicans currently have 52.
00:08:22.500 Control of the House of Representatives is still unknown as I'm making this video,
00:08:27.560 and at the time of making it, the Republicans have 206 seats and the Democrats have 192.
00:08:34.200 218 is needed for control of the House.
00:08:36.920 If the Republicans win the House, they will have completed a clean sweep, winning everything.
00:08:42.680 Despite Trump being declared president-elect on November 6th, 2024, he only assumes the
00:08:48.780 office of president on Inauguration Day, which is January 20th, 2025.
00:08:53.880 Premier Smith congratulated President Trump and Vice President J.D.
00:08:57.620 Vance on their victory shortly after the election had been called.
00:09:00.780 She said, quote,
00:09:02.020 Yeah, let me know in the comments how you feel about Trump being elected and how emotional
00:09:28.080 or stressed you got during the election period.
00:09:30.520 Now, hopping into some news that feels a bit dated now, but this actually took place, of
00:09:34.580 course, during the airing of the last episode of the Alberta Roundup.
00:09:37.400 I'll go through a quick review of the Alberta AGM, which featured Daniel Smith's leadership
00:09:42.760 review.
00:09:43.740 And obviously, I attended the AGM in Red Deer and had the immense pleasure of running in
00:09:48.320 to some of you, and I honestly wish that could happen a bit more often.
00:09:51.760 To be honest, when I was watching the screen with great anticipation as they were announcing
00:09:56.520 Smith's leadership results, my jaw almost hit the floor when I saw the 91.5% number pop
00:10:03.940 up on the screen.
00:10:04.740 I mean, I was absolutely shocked, gobsmacked.
00:10:07.240 I expected Smith to garner around, I don't know, 70 to 80% of the votes, especially considering
00:10:12.980 some people I spoke to at the conference told me they were voting no, not because they wanted
00:10:18.140 her to lose, but because they felt as if her getting 100% of the vote would teach her no 0.89
00:10:23.740 lessons and they wanted her to be stronger on a few policies.
00:10:26.880 Here's a video I took at the AGM of when Smith's review was announced.
00:10:30.440 For the moment we have all been waiting for, the results of the leadership review is, with
00:10:39.300 4,633 cast ballots in the yes column to the decision of do you agree, up your leader 91.5%.
00:10:53.440 hit that button, shout out to cameras, and click the photo down below for.
00:11:08.960 Woo! 0.99
00:11:10.100 Woo! 0.99
00:11:13.940 Woo! 0.99
00:11:15.720 Woo! 0.99
00:11:19.780 What I'll say quickly about that last point is I'm very curious to see how conservatism might
00:11:37.640 evolve in Canada following the recent results in the United States. I feel as if Smith had
00:11:43.780 already been becoming a bit of a stronger voice for big C conservatism over the last few weeks and
00:11:50.080 I'm wondering if Pierre will also lean more towards the right now that he's seen the overwhelming
00:11:55.720 results a strong conservative garnered in the United States after Trump really emphasized
00:12:02.580 bringing the middle class back to life and saying no to elitism. So approximately 6,085 people attended
00:12:09.420 the AGM and the majority voted in the leadership review. Additional ballots on some UCP board
00:12:15.940 members were also available to be voted on at the voting stations and they were provided to members
00:12:20.680 on top of their leadership ballot. The AGM also featured voting on 35 policy resolutions and all
00:12:28.000 35 passed but the results are of course non-binding. However what I found interesting about this was
00:12:35.080 the policy that actually did the worst was essentially a key policy promise of the Alberta
00:12:39.820 UCP that has yet to be implemented. So policy resolution number 30 called to quote implement
00:12:45.800 an 8% personal income tax bracket for middle income Albertans and restore the provincial tax rate of 10%
00:12:52.460 as the highest personal income. So the voting on this policy was actually so close it required a
00:12:57.440 recount and honestly in my opinion it was a toss-up voting wise on whether it was a yes or no they did say
00:13:03.420 yes that it did pass but I mean it could have gone either way I think and the the people who spoke
00:13:10.500 in opposition seemed to be mainly concerned that the tax cut wasn't equal across the board.
00:13:16.240 Other interesting policies were voted on notably one that called to abandon net zero targets and
00:13:21.780 remove the designation of CO2 as a pollutant. It passed with nearly a hundred percent support as many
00:13:27.820 other policies did however a few members were brave enough to speak out against it arguing that
00:13:33.320 too much CO2 could be a detriment to the planet. They actually got booed much to the moderator's
00:13:39.480 chagrin and the supporters said the exact opposite noting that CO2 has been much higher historically
00:13:45.900 but still permitted life on earth to function. So now jumping into our last story for the day
00:13:51.380 this is an exclusive I wrote on how the Edmonton Public School Board is gearing up for a fight with
00:13:57.200 Alberta parents and Premier Daniel Smith's government by opposing a series of parental rights policies.
00:14:03.320 The school board issued a motion on Tuesday that attacked the right of parents to be informed
00:14:08.060 about their children using different pronouns while at school and giving them more control over sex
00:14:12.880 education. The motion featured some background and facts like Senator Christopher Wells saying that the
00:14:19.660 policies quote if passed they would be some of the most extreme anti-trans and anti-2SLGBTQ policies not only in
00:14:28.780 Canada but in the world. This from Trudeau's left-wing partisan senator as previously quoted
00:14:36.160 by Daniel Smith but yeah I mean come on Mr. Wells these policies granting parental rights are comparable
00:14:41.440 to countries that murder people for being gay? I don't think so. The policies provide additional
00:14:46.800 protection for youth in health care education and sports. One key change is from the current policy
00:14:53.360 where parents can opt their children out of lessons that teach sexual orientation and gender identity
00:14:58.020 curricula. Parents will now have to opt them in. So I was lucky enough to speak with executive director
00:15:03.760 of Parents for Choice in Education John Hilton O'Brien who criticized the evidence
00:15:09.740 provided in the EPSB's motion saying that it relied heavily on surveys which doesn't speak to cause and
00:15:19.620 effect. For example they highlighted the negatives but there was no evidence that proved that doing
00:15:25.300 the opposite would actually be a positive. In fact in some cases it could just make the situation worse.
00:15:32.520 It's the family and friends event at Shoppers Drug Mart. Get 20% off almost all regular priced
00:15:37.980 merchandise. Two days only. Tuesday February 24th and Wednesday February 25th. Open your PC Optimum app
00:15:44.880 to get your coupon. He said that the evidence provided had been quote destroyed by the Cass Review which
00:15:54.220 Smith previously called quote the most comprehensive review of the medical literature and the science
00:16:00.080 behind the impacts of transitioning on children. Additionally he said that the school board fundamentally
00:16:05.800 misunderstood children's right to privacy. He said they're arguing that a child's right to privacy
00:16:11.400 is against the parents and that they as the bureaucrats could exercise that right. However in reality of
00:16:17.580 course the opposite is true where the right to privacy is against the state and for the parents
00:16:22.760 to exercise. They're flipping the very idea of human rights completely on its head said Hilton O'Brien.
00:16:29.020 These guys can't get it together with the billion dollars plus that they have. They couldn't get it
00:16:34.320 together to give a salient response to this legislation. This is sheer incompetence. However he
00:16:40.520 did admit that the proposed legislation was imperfect. He said actually that it was similar to Smith's
00:16:46.620 leadership review where of course about 91.5 percent was correct. One of his concerns was that the
00:16:53.140 education minister would now have to approve learning and teaching resources or external presenters for
00:16:58.580 topics dealing with gender identity, sexual orientation, or human sexuality. Another was that schools
00:17:05.580 would be forced to develop a gay straight alliance if a single student asked for one. Hilton O'Brien
00:17:11.500 explained that both of these policies could collide with religious schools and their guidelines for
00:17:16.500 teaching. Interestingly for Catholic schools yeah he said that basically the minister can't come above the
00:17:21.920 bishops in regard to teaching policies. I also spoke with the founder of D Trans Alliance Canada
00:17:27.620 Kelly Lynn Perry who told me that she wished these policies existed when she was a vulnerable youth.
00:17:34.620 Socially transitioning a child is not a neutral activity. The majority of youth who socially
00:17:40.620 transition go on to hormones and surgery said Lynn Perry. Of course echoing the statements of Smith who
00:17:46.560 previously said it's almost a hundred percent transition rate from social to literal transition. Premier
00:17:52.540 Smith's new policies ensure that schools cannot initiate a child into a gender transition
00:17:56.540 process without informing their parents added Lynn Perry. Youth also cannot get a driver's license without
00:18:02.540 parental consent. There are reasonable constraints placed upon young people. Lynn Perry said that children pay the
00:18:08.540 price for being taught that it is possible to be quote born in the wrong body. The policies will encourage a 0.66
00:18:15.540 kinder, gentler, more compassionate approach to youth who are different, gender nonconforming, or distressed she said.
00:18:22.540 No child should be told their way of being a boy or girl is so wrong that only pharmaceuticals and surgeries can fix them.
00:18:30.540 The EPSB in its motion claimed that Smith did not share the opt-in change with them before implementation.
00:18:37.540 However, Alberta's education minister Demetrius Nicolaides told me that the proposed amendments follow requests from
00:18:44.540 parents who want to be more involved in their child's education.
00:18:47.540 Our team has talked with school boards, teachers, superintendents, parents, and other partners to get their advice and
00:18:53.540 guidance, he said.
00:18:55.540 Should the proposed legislation pass, we will continue to consult with our stakeholders throughout the
00:19:01.540 implementation of these policies to ensure the right supports are available where and when they are needed.
00:19:07.540 Alright, so that wraps up our last story. Now hopping into the comment roundup this week.
00:19:11.540 There were a lot of interesting ones, but a few key themes that emerged in the comments.
00:19:16.540 So the first comment comes from at saladgirl2062 who said quote,
00:19:21.540 BC resident here, and I have been following Premier Smith for some time and sincerely wish she was cloned. 0.99
00:19:28.540 Canada needs more like her. 1.00
00:19:30.540 So I actually decided to highlight this comment because of a question I've been asking people,
00:19:36.540 specifically supporters of the Conservative Party and conservatism in general lately.
00:19:41.540 And it's a simple question.
00:19:43.540 Is there a better Conservative Premier in Canada than Danielle Smith?
00:19:47.540 Of course, in my eyes, the answer is unequivocally no.
00:19:50.540 Smith may not be perfect, but she is certainly the best we got.
00:19:54.540 And this is what I was asking people at the AGM when they told me if they were voting yes or no.
00:19:59.540 I said, look, is there a better Premier, a Conservative Premier in Canada?
00:20:03.540 The answer was resoundingly, obviously no.
00:20:06.540 The next comment comes from at saintelssewer8269.
00:20:12.540 You guys don't make it easy with these with these names.
00:20:15.540 Who said, quote, I am shocked that Canadians have no way of removing the Prime Minister.
00:20:20.540 This needs to change.
00:20:21.540 Trudeau wants to make Canadians his servants.
00:20:25.540 It's like Danielle Smith said when she was talking about her leadership review and she said that she bets the Liberal caucus had such a mechanism so that they could remove Trudeau because nobody likes him, not even his own caucus.
00:20:39.540 And the last comment I'll highlight today comes from at tomb8232 who said, quote, when any mayor can take my charter rights away with a snap of a finger, we know they mean nothing.
00:20:51.540 Yeah, I decided to highlight this last one.
00:20:53.540 And I mean, I could have chosen from any similar comments.
00:20:57.540 There were so many that highlighted the similar theme that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms doesn't really protect Canadians rights enough.
00:21:06.540 Many of you were calling for the charter to become more like the Constitution in the United States.
00:21:13.540 And I'm interested to see if any future governments do anything to really enhance our rights in that manner.
00:21:20.540 Remember, when the pendulum swings really far one way, eventually it has to swing at least as far back the other way.
00:21:28.540 And we all know how far it swung to the left recently.
00:21:31.540 But at least I feel it's starting to come back and I'm interested to see how far to the right it goes.
00:21:39.540 So I'd like to thank everyone for watching this episode of the Alberta Roundup.
00:21:43.540 Once again, it was a great pleasure to see you all in person.
00:21:47.540 And I can't wait for the next in-person event where I might see some of you again.
00:21:51.540 Let me know if there's anything interesting coming up that you plan to attend.
00:21:56.540 Also, have a fun long weekend if your company gives you remember and stay off.
00:22:01.540 I hope they do and they definitely should, lest we forget.
00:22:06.540 Oh.
00:22:07.540 I'm really excited.
00:22:08.540 I don't know if you're interested in this.
00:22:09.540 All right.
00:22:10.540 So what is the last word in diagnostics?
00:22:11.540 What do you believe?
00:22:12.540 Well, what's if theано output in the midst? 0.98
00:22:13.420 I love it.
00:22:14.540 I know the maximum zero specimen.
00:22:15.540 You don't think the difference between each other and a part of each one of my specific groups.
00:22:17.540 We can see it in a different parts of the unconticiencies.
00:22:19.540 I don't even have a difference, but the effect and should it affect anyouses.
00:22:20.540 All right, after this one of the points that we could improve that, although you need to answer the column already sensitive data
00:22:25.540 How do we please lift over the left?
00:22:27.540 We'll just Hu, leave a minute, and see i took a अľa leaf here.
00:22:29.540 You know how, by the end?
