When you let aero truffle bubbles melt, everything takes on a creamy, delicious, chocolatey glow.
00:00:06.320
Like that pile of laundry. You didn't forget to fold it.
00:00:09.220
Nah, it's a new trend. Wrinkled chic.
00:00:12.100
Feel the aero bubbles melt. It's mind-bubbling.
00:00:24.700
Hey everyone, welcome back to the Alberta Roundup. I'm your host, Rachel Emanuel.
00:00:28.300
I hope that you guys are having a great week so far.
00:00:31.140
Let's take a look at what we're going to be talking about on today's show.
00:00:34.380
Federal Conservative leader Pierre Polyev agrees with Premier Danielle Smith on just transition.
00:00:39.860
Meanwhile, Premier Smith is demanding answer on her proposal to the Prime Minister.
00:00:44.800
There's also a new pilot program to increase public safety in Calgary, and another program to prevent overdoses.
00:00:51.740
We're also going to be talking a little bit about my Freedom Convoy documentary,
00:00:55.020
and of course, I'll be doing a weekly comment roundup.
00:00:57.880
All that and more happening now on the Alberta Roundup.
00:01:01.340
Okay guys, up first.
00:01:03.060
Federal Conservative leader Pierre Polyev says he backs Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's concerns
00:01:07.720
about Ottawa's anti-oil and gas agenda.
00:01:11.060
The federal leader was in Calgary on Thursday.
00:01:14.040
He said the federal government's plan would make Canada dependent on foreign, polluting dictatorships,
00:01:19.340
and allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to continue to dominate the European energy market.
00:01:23.920
Also on Thursday, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith wrote to the Prime Minister asking to follow
00:01:28.740
up on their February 7th meeting, in which she asked him to halt federal government plans
00:01:33.320
on just transition legislation.
00:01:35.260
She also wants him to toss away new regulations introduced under the Federal Emissions Reductions
00:01:39.720
Plan, such as the Clean Electricity Regulations and the Oil and Gas Sector Emissions Cap.
00:01:44.860
On our previous shows, we've discussed how Smith has asked Trudeau to instead partner with Alberta
00:01:49.420
on collaborative projects that they can both agree on.
00:01:52.680
That includes entracting investment to Alberta's conventional and non-conventional energy sector.
00:01:57.400
She proposed that both governments work on a coordinated approach to a carbon capture
00:02:00.980
utilization storage program, or CCUS, for the purpose of net reductions emissions in Alberta.
00:02:07.600
The Premier wrote, quote,
00:02:08.500
To this end, we propose coordinating a federal CCUS income tax credit with an expansion of
00:02:14.780
our current Alberta Petrochemicals Incentive Program to include CCUS projects.
00:02:19.760
This new incentive program would be in addition to the over $1.8 billion already invested into
00:02:25.960
CCUS projects across the province by the government of Alberta, as well as our province's additional
00:02:32.180
implicit contribution to CCUS made through our current royalty regime.
00:02:36.420
She also wants both governments to further discuss expanding this type of program to other
00:02:42.220
emerging reducing emissions technology.
00:02:44.760
She wrote, quote,
00:02:45.760
To this end, I request that we immediately create a federal provincial minister-led working
00:02:50.440
group with the objective of reaching agreement on a coordinated provincial federal CCUS incentive
00:02:55.300
program in the coming weeks.
00:02:57.040
A 12-week partnership between Alberta sheriffs and the Calgary police will begin at the end of
00:03:01.140
the month to help deter crime and stop social disorder.
00:03:04.260
The government of Alberta says the increase of 12 sheriffs in Calgary will help increase
00:03:08.620
police presence, while allowing the Calgary police to focus their presence on inner-city
00:03:12.900
neighborhoods.
00:03:13.960
Alberta Minister of Public Safety Mike Ellis says Albertans deserve to feel safe in their
00:03:18.060
homes, communities, and places of work.
00:03:20.200
He said, quote,
00:03:21.180
This initiative increases public safety by putting more eyes and ears in neighborhoods where they're
00:03:25.740
needed, and creates a more visible officer presence that will help deter crime, while connecting
00:03:30.740
vulnerable Albertans to the supports they need.
00:03:32.880
Investing is all about the future.
00:03:35.640
So, what do you think is going to happen?
00:03:37.560
Bitcoin is sort of inevitable at this point.
00:03:40.080
I think it would come down to precious metals.
00:03:42.660
I hope we don't go cashless.
00:03:44.760
I would say land is a safe investment.
00:03:47.340
Technology, companies.
00:03:48.480
Solar energy.
00:03:49.520
Robotic pollinators might be a thing.
00:03:52.080
A wrestler to face a robot?
00:03:53.780
That will have to happen.
00:03:55.040
So, whatever you think is going to happen in the future, you can invest in it at Wealthsimple.

00:04:03.320
Conservative leader Pierre Polly was actually asked about this new program while he was in
00:04:06.900
Calgary, his hometown.
00:04:08.680
And he repeated his catchphrase.
00:04:10.180
You might have heard him say it before.
00:04:11.880
He says, everything in Canada feels broken.
00:04:14.280
Here's what that sounded like.
00:04:15.600
Everything feels broken in Canada today.
00:04:18.420
Communities are coming apart.
00:04:19.620
This is a problem from coast to coast.
00:04:23.540
So, we can't blame a local police force, municipal government, or even province.
00:04:29.440
It's just as bad, if not worse, in Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto.
00:04:35.440
Obviously, the problem is national in nature, and it has happened after eight years of Justin
00:04:41.940
Trudeau.
00:04:42.940
Why is it happening?
00:04:44.420
One, people are falling into poverty.
00:04:47.940
You got a fifth of people are cutting their groceries or they're cutting their meals because
00:04:53.320
they can't afford to eat.
00:04:54.920
And so, then they're ending desperate and on the streets and addicted to drugs.
00:04:59.120
And that's because of the inflationary policies Trudeau's implemented that have driven up the
00:05:02.860
cost of everything.
00:05:03.980
Two, he's implemented a catch and release policy that allow the most prolific repeat violent
00:05:10.140
offenders to go back onto the street again and again and again.
00:05:13.820
At the end of his comments there, he also added a number three, and that was safe supply programs,
00:05:18.360
but I cut that short because he went a little bit long.
00:05:20.600
We're going to move on to our next story here.
00:05:22.540
Amid ongoing efforts to address the homelessness and addictions crisis plaguing Alberta, and
00:05:27.420
honestly, all of Canada, the Alberta government has committed more than $4 million to overdoses
00:05:32.480
in Calgary.
00:05:33.240
The funds will flow to the Calgary Drop-In Centre to create dynamic overdose response teams
00:05:38.300
and establish 35 medical detox and pre-treatment beds.
00:05:42.100
Those are capable of treating 1,000 Calgarians per year.
00:05:45.360
Calgary Drop-In Centre Executive Director Sandra Clarkson said the beds will be
00:05:49.100
life-saving and life-changing for countless people in the years to come.
00:05:53.520
All publicly funded detox beds and spaces are completely free for Albertans.
00:05:57.060

00:06:14.220
You guys know that the government of Alberta has been doing a lot of work on the addictions
00:06:17.920
and homelessness crisis.
00:06:19.300
I've covered it extensively, a little bit in this podcast, and a lot in my writing,
00:06:23.260
so this is the latest update on those efforts.
00:06:25.280
Okay, guys, and I just wanted to give you a friendly reminder that my documentary,
00:06:29.240
The Freedom Occupation, aired for the first time on Thursday night.
00:06:33.300
Thank you so much to those of you who tuned in for the live show.
00:06:35.860
I really appreciate the support and that you all took the time to watch it.
00:06:38.980
For those of you who haven't had a chance to see it yet, you can view it at freedomoccupation.ca.
00:06:44.160
And while we're on the topic, I of course have to mention that the Prime Minister was found
00:06:47.680
on Friday that he was justified in invoking the Federal Emergencies Act for the first time
00:06:52.140
in Canadian history to deal with Freedom Convoy protesters.
00:06:55.280
We talk about the invocation of the Emergencies Act in the documentary,
00:06:58.620
how it will impact the Prime Minister, and how the Freedom Convoy will be remembered.
00:07:02.400
We're going to play a little clip of the doc for you right now.
00:07:04.700
Yeah, how did I feel driving home?
00:07:09.480
To be honest, at that time you're tired, you want to go home.
00:07:16.320
It didn't feel like the job was done.
00:07:18.300
Yes, we did accomplish something.
00:07:21.640
We woke up the world, first of all, and it actually still was giving people hope
00:07:28.560
that something would change, that things would get better.
00:07:31.700
But then the reception that we got in Niagara was unbelievable.
00:07:42.260
Yeah, the support that we got from the community meant an awful lot.
00:07:46.060
And having all these people on the side of the road standing there waving the flags again,
00:08:00.700
saying thank you for doing what you did, gave me a little bit of closure,
00:08:04.280
but you still wish that things would have gone different.
00:08:11.500
Yeah, I do feel like the convoy accomplished actually more than what we set out for.
00:08:17.580
Obviously the mandates, the federal mandates are still there,
00:08:20.520
but the community, at least here in Niagara region, is super unified.
00:08:27.520
The support is amazing.
00:08:31.700
I believe the mandates were there to try to disunify our country and keep people apart,
00:08:37.200
and it's done the exact opposite with the convoy.
00:08:40.600
So question of the week for you guys.
00:08:42.200
Do you think the prime minister was justified in invoking the Federal Emergencies Act?
00:08:46.220
Do you think there was a real threat of danger that the protesters posed?
00:08:50.860
Please comment on the video below and I'll read through your comments next week.
00:08:54.720
Okay, now that brings me to my weekly comment roundup.
00:08:57.320
Let's take a look at what you guys had to say under last week's show.
00:09:00.040
We talked a little bit about the UCP and NDP polling numbers.
00:09:03.520
User Jim Stott says,
00:09:04.580
For the life of me, I really don't understand how Danielle Smith is not much,
00:09:08.100
much further ahead of the NDP than she is.
00:09:11.160
Don't understand at all that Calgarians and Edmontonians
00:09:14.120
don't realize the gem of a leader they have with Premier Danielle Smith.
00:09:17.200
She has become the envy of many Canadians living in other provinces
00:09:21.580
and even people living in other countries
00:09:23.460
who have come to know her via some of her online interviews.
00:09:26.900
Danielle, as a politician, is a much-needed breath of fresh air
00:09:29.780
and she's earned her place as a leader of Alberta.
00:09:32.500
I really hope she goes far.
00:09:33.860
Wake up, Alberta.
00:09:35.080
Commenting on the super awkward handshake between Danielle and the prime minister,
00:09:39.120
Oscar Guerrero says,
00:09:40.220
I actually forgot about that rule of decorum and I wish I hadn't.
00:09:55.880
I think it's time to bring back more decorum in Canadian society,
00:09:58.920
such as just basic manners.
00:10:00.680
But from now on, you can only offer to shake a woman's hand if you're a man,
00:10:04.160
if she offers it first.
00:10:05.420
Lastly, user Keith Miller said,
00:10:07.080
I like your reporting,
00:10:08.180
but these misleading clickbait titles are annoying
00:10:10.700
and undercut your journalism.
00:10:12.340
Keith, I appreciate your feedback
00:10:13.680
and I like that you enjoy the reporting.
00:10:15.940
My response would be to say,
00:10:17.100
I don't think that the title was misleading.
00:10:18.820
I think it was just a funny take on a silly incident that happened.
00:10:22.100
I would also say that video podcast
00:10:23.340
isn't a super serious or traditional style of reporting.
00:10:27.020
Obviously, I do my best to bring you guys the accurate facts,
00:10:29.580
so I think I do a pretty good job of that.
00:10:31.440
But I think podcasting as a medium
00:10:32.820
allows you to just have a little more fun with things.
00:10:35.120
This isn't a traditional broadcasting medium,
00:10:36.980
so I think I can be a little bit more casual.
00:10:39.060
It might surprise some of you to learn
00:10:40.220
that I'm actually sitting on the floor right now
00:10:41.740
in my little podcasting corner.
00:10:43.420
But I have had a couple of these complaints.
00:10:45.160
I think a couple of weeks ago,
00:10:46.200
someone complained that I used the phrase,
00:10:47.880
you guys too much.
00:10:49.280
Again, I think this is just a more casual style of communication
00:10:51.940
and it's one that I really enjoy.
00:10:53.800
So Keith, I hope my clickbaity headlines
00:10:55.800
don't turn you off from my journalism.
00:10:57.700
I do appreciate the feedback,
00:10:58.920
but I don't think they're going anywhere.
00:11:00.400
Okay, guys, that's all I have for you today.
00:11:02.140
Thank you so much for tuning into this week's episode
00:11:04.160
