00:00:26.800 Hey everyone, welcome back to the Alberta Roundup.
00:00:28.640 I'm your host, Rachel Emanuel.
00:00:30.080 I hope you're having a great weekend so far.
00:00:32.080 Here's what we're going to be looking at today.
00:00:33.840 Alberta Premier Daniel Smith has weighed in on ESG.
00:00:37.440 Pastor Tim Stevens has been acquitted.
00:00:40.000 We're also going to be taking a look at the UCP fundraising numbers.
00:00:44.000 And Tamara Leach testifies.
00:00:46.880 Finally, an Alberta Justice Minister is accusing the federal government
00:00:49.920 of withholding information that would be embarrassing to Ottawa.
00:00:53.280 All that and more happening now on the Alberta Roundup.
00:00:56.080 Alberta Premier Daniel Smith has spent the last week campaigning in Brooks Medicine Hat,
00:01:00.160 where she's running for the by-election as you know.
00:01:02.800 That vote will happen next week on November 8th.
00:01:05.280 And in all candidates debate in the riding on Wednesday night,
00:01:07.920 Smith pitched herself to voters as someone that's in a decision-making role
00:01:11.520 and spoke about the need for healthcare reform.
00:01:13.760 The candidates were also asked about how they would improve Alberta's ESG rating.
00:01:18.880 ESG, of course, is the controversial environmental, social and governance.
00:01:23.520 And it's increasingly used as a rating that socially conscious investors consider
00:01:27.840 before determining whether they want to invest in a given company or region.
00:01:31.520 The NDP candidate, Gwendolyn Dirk, was the first to be asked
00:01:34.800 about how she would improve Alberta's ESG rating.
00:01:37.280 And she seemed rather caught off guard.
00:01:39.520 Take a listen to her response here.
00:01:40.880 After a moderator stepped in to explain what ESG is, Dirk was able to respond.
00:01:56.080 She attacked Daniel Smith's proposed Alberta Sovereignty Act,
00:01:59.200 and said it would chase away investment in the province.
00:02:01.920 She also said an NDP government would reinstate tax credits the UCP government did away with.
00:02:07.120 Second to answer the question was Premier Danielle Smith.
00:02:09.520 And I'll let you listen to her remarks for yourself.
00:02:12.080 You may have noticed that Saskatchewan just passed or introduced a Saskatchewan first policy.
00:02:17.600 So I think it's catching on the idea of standing up to Ottawa.
00:02:20.560 And there's a very good reason to stand up to Ottawa.
00:02:23.760 Ottawa's hostile policies towards us has been led by the most extreme left on environmental,
00:02:31.280 social, and governance ratings that focus so narrowly just on the issue of greenhouse gas
00:02:38.000 emissions and the demonization campaign that has happened against our energy industry,
00:02:42.560 which, sadly, the federal government with Stephen Gilbeau is aligned with.
00:02:47.600 And, sadly, the NDP is aligned with the Liberals at the federal level.
00:02:52.000 They have proposed a policy that would put a specific cap-and-trade program on our oil and gas
00:02:57.600 industry mandating that they would reduce their emissions 42 percent by 2030.
00:03:03.280 That is going to devastate the industry.
00:03:05.440 I've talked to industry players.
00:03:06.560 They would expect to see a massive decline in their share value if that comes through.
00:03:10.960 This is the reason we have to stand up to Ottawa.
00:03:13.760 It's because they have no right to regulate our industry.
00:03:16.720 If you go and look at our constitution, natural resources are the exclusive jurisdiction of
00:03:21.200 the provinces.
00:03:22.000 They have no business getting in this area.
00:03:23.760 And this is why Sonia Savage is going to COP 27.
00:03:26.800 She is going to go there to talk about the Alberta way of reducing emissions.
00:03:31.280 You know what the Alberta way of reducing emissions is?
00:03:33.440 Is let's export clean LNG to the countries in the world that are still using polluting fuels
00:03:39.040 like wood and coal and dung for home heating and for cooking.
00:03:42.400 That's causing 44 million deaths a year in indoor air pollution.
00:03:46.320 If we do that and get credit for it through the green transfer mechanism, we can reduce
00:03:49.920 global emissions.
00:03:51.040 Another thing that we'll be talking about is building out our hydrogen economy.
00:03:54.240 We are going to be at the heart of the hydrogen economy and that is going to reduce overall
00:03:58.000 emissions.
00:03:58.640 We are also a world leader on carbon tech so that we can capture carbon dioxide embedded
00:04:04.800 in products so that we can make them more durable or put it underground.
00:04:07.840 You will never see Ottawa or Stephen Gibault defending Alberta in the way that we are going
00:04:13.520 to defend Alberta.
00:04:14.320 That's how we'll stand up for our ESG rating.
00:04:16.880 Thank you.
00:04:17.920 Another big story coming out of the province this week, Alberta pastor Tim Stephens was
00:04:22.080 acquitted on charges of breaching the province's public health orders which required physical
00:04:26.240 distancing.
00:04:27.360 Stephens spent a total of 21 days in jail in regards to the charges.
00:04:31.200 In a statement, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom said Stephens was
00:04:34.400 illegally arrested for having allegedly violate public health orders which have since been shown to be
00:04:39.760 ineffective and harmful.
00:04:41.760 This decision sets the record straight about the justifiability of his actions and about the
00:04:46.640 importance of respecting charter rights and freedoms.
00:04:49.120 We are pleased that the court has acquitted Pastor Stephens on the charges of not complying with a
00:04:53.760 public health order.
00:04:54.320 Meanwhile, the United Conservative Party had its best fundraising quarter since former Premier
00:05:00.000 Jason Kenney's pandemic crackdown.
00:05:02.240 Let's take a look at these numbers.
00:05:03.680 The party raised around $975,000 from the third financial quarter.
00:05:08.160 That's from the beginning of July to the end of September,
00:05:10.720 and it also occurred during the leadership race to replace Kenney.
00:05:14.160 Those numbers mark the most that the UCP has raised since the third financial quarter in 2021,
00:05:19.440 which ended just one week after the former Premier implemented a vaccine passport in Alberta.
00:05:25.040 Now, the UCP were still out-fundraised by the Alberta NDP, who raised over $1.4 million.
00:05:30.960 But of course, the UCP numbers don't include all the fundraising from the seven leadership candidates,
00:05:35.440 and that includes Travis Taves and Danielle Smith, who each raised over $1 million for their campaign
00:05:40.880 alone. This week, Freedom Convoy organizer Tamara Leach testified at the Emergencies Act Inquiry in Ottawa.
00:05:47.920 She said she was motivated to get involved with the convoy because there were so many people
00:05:51.840 committing suicide in her town that they stopped reporting them. Leach is, of course, from Saskatchewan
00:05:57.520 originally but now lives in Medicine Hat. Her testimony was incredibly powerful. Take a listen to her remarks now.
00:06:03.280 I was seeing families torn apart.
00:06:05.120 The suicides in my hometown were so numerous that they stopped reporting them.
00:06:19.360 Elderly people were dying by themselves in long-term care facilities and saying goodbye over iPads.
00:06:25.760 My grandma is 94 years old and she was locked in her little apartment by herself for two years.
00:06:39.680 And now that she can go out and do things, she's not healthy enough. She lost two years of her life.
00:06:44.960 My father is, I'm so sorry. Take your time. My father is a very social man. He is the Coffee Row Saskatchewan
00:06:59.200 father. And I remember him telling me one day that he went down to the local restaurant that he went to
00:07:06.240 every single day. And these are small towns where everybody knows everybody and he was asked to leave.
00:07:12.080 Everyone needs help with something. If investing is your something, we get it.
00:07:20.160 Cooperators Financial Representatives are here to help with genuine advice that puts your needs first.
00:07:25.440 We got you. For all your holistic investment and life insurance advice needs, talk to us today.
00:07:30.720 Cooperators, investing in your future together.
00:07:36.000 Mutual funds are offered through Cooperators Financial Investment Services, Inc. to Canadian residents,
00:07:39.120 except those in Quebec and the territories.
00:07:40.320 Segregated funds are administered by Cooperators Life Insurance Company.
00:07:42.640 Life insurance is underwritten by Cooperators Life Insurance Company.
00:07:49.120 And I didn't want my children and my grandchildren to live in a world like that.
00:07:55.040 I was becoming increasingly alarmed listening to my prime minister
00:08:02.960 and I found his rhetoric to be incredibly divisive. And I'm a believer that if you're a leader of a country,
00:08:19.920 you have to lead all of your people, even if you don't agree with them.
00:08:24.320 It's worth noting that this is one of the very few times the public has heard from Leach.
00:08:28.400 She was arrested for her involvement with the convoy in February while in Ottawa.
00:08:32.800 And her bail conditions have barred her from speaking publicly or even contacting other organizers at times.
00:08:37.760 Let's move into the controversy of the week. Alberta Justice Minister Tyler Shandro says
00:08:43.040 the federal government is withholding official communication about a federal provincial territorial
00:08:48.400 meeting because Alberta asked the government to name the four provinces opposed to its gun grab
00:08:54.160 scheme. Okay guys, let's dig into the details here. The 2022 federal provincial and territorial meeting
00:09:00.080 for ministers of public safety and justice ministers occurred on October 13th and 14th.
00:09:05.520 Typically after these meetings, the federal government releases official communication
00:09:08.960 to relay what was spoken about and discussed. This is called a communique. However, in this instance,
00:09:14.000 Ottawa did not release a communique saying they could not agree on the language. But Tyler Shandro says,
00:09:19.680 no, Ottawa simply didn't release the communication because Alberta asked them to name the four provinces
00:09:25.280 opposed to its gun grab scheme in that communique. You guys know the details of the story by now.
00:09:29.600 Four provinces have told Ottawa they do not want their provincial policing resources to act as
00:09:33.760 confiscation agents as part of the Trudeau Liberals gun buyback program. They aired those concerns to
00:09:39.680 their federal counterparts at that meeting. And then Alberta asked for those provinces to be named in
00:09:44.080 the communication, but it appears that Ottawa is unwilling to do so as they have not released the
00:09:48.320 official communication. Let's take a look at what else Shandro had to say. Quote, the disagreement over
00:09:53.200 language centered on Alberta's request that provinces opposed to taking police officers off the street
00:09:58.240 to confiscate firearms be listed by name in the communique. Shandro also said that Quebec is
00:10:03.120 routinely listed in communiques as a province that disagrees to federal initiatives. Quote,
00:10:09.440 apparently a lack of consensus for the same courtesy to be extended to other provinces and territories
00:10:14.240 was enough for the federal government to decline to issue a communique. Alberta has asked over and over
00:10:19.920 again to be treated as an equal partner in Confederation on par with Quebec. The federal
00:10:24.480 government made it clear that it is unwilling and disinterested in even taking a small step
00:10:29.440 in that direction. What we're watching in the weeks to come Alberta Premier Daniel Smith has said
00:10:33.680 she's done with masks. Specifically she said she will not permit kindergarten through grade 12 students
00:10:38.720 to wear masks at school any longer. Quote, the detrimental effects of masking on the mental health
00:10:44.640 development and education of children in classroom settings is well understood and we must turn the
00:10:49.600 page on what has been an extremely difficult time for children along with their parents and teachers.
00:10:55.360 Her comments come after an Alberta judge ruled last week that a February order lifting the mask
00:10:59.840 mandate was unreasonable because it came from cabinet not the province's chief medical health
00:11:03.920 officer but Smith has said she's directed her justice minister Tyler Shandro to examine whether to
00:11:08.960 appeal. All right everyone thanks so much for tuning in please subscribe to True North if you haven't already
