The Alberta Roundup with Isaac Lamoureux - Smith criticizes Carney’s conflicting pipeline stance

00:00:00.000 mark carney's pipeline flip-flop is making waves again and alberta premier danielle smith isn't

00:00:16.800 letting it slide we'll break down her criticism and look at how carney's story keeps changing

00:00:22.200 depending on where he's speaking and who he's speaking to alberta's energy minister brian

00:00:27.840 jean is also speaking out this time against the federal emissions cap which he warns could

00:00:33.240 devastate alberta and the country's economy despite the liberal party having a new leader

00:00:38.240 he warns that it's the same old story and despite getting less federal funding than other provinces

00:00:44.160 alberta is leading the country in new home construction my name's isaac lamerew and i'll

00:00:49.260 cover all of these stories on the shortened holiday version of the alberta roundup today

00:00:53.460 let's hop into that first story now alberta premier danielle smith is taking shots at liberal

00:00:59.140 leader mark carney for continuing to flip-flop on canada's energy future and for making more vague

00:01:04.840 non-committal responses on key issues she posted to x calling him out saying quote so it would appear

00:01:12.060 mark carney is now just fine with canada continuing to be 100 reliant on the united states to purchase

00:01:19.160 all of our oil and gas and to purchase all of the fuel used by ontario and quebec from the u.s

00:01:24.540 through line five smith's comments followed carney's appearance on the french language talk show

00:01:29.620 where he delivered an ambiguous statement on the future of pipelines in canada here's what he had

00:01:35.660 to say in response smith said quote this is absurd irrational and anti-canadian in every respect

00:01:52.800 it's also the exact opposite of what he promised while in alberta a couple of weeks ago does he

00:01:58.420 want canada to be strong prosperous and independent or not true north reported how carney spent most of

00:02:04.420 the interview defending his record the liberal leader justified his former company brookfield

00:02:09.220 asset management's investments in offshore tax havens and insisted that he led canada through

00:02:15.200 the 2008 financial recession despite former prime minister stephen harper crediting his former finance

00:02:22.200 minister the late jim flaherty smith previously attacked carney for telling her in person that he

00:02:27.140 would oppose bill c69 only to say later that he would not repeal the no more pipelines bill carney made a

00:02:33.660 similar flip-flop with the oil and gas cap telling smith one day that he opposed an oil and gas

00:02:38.260 production cap only to express support for it the very next day in ottawa smith said quote this has

00:02:44.540 been the same story for the last 10 years liberals come to alberta smile for the cameras tell everyone

00:02:49.400 how much they're going to work with alberta and support the energy sector then they leave go home

00:02:54.060 and proceed to do everything in their power to roadblock and scare away investment from the energy

00:02:59.140 sector carney has also previously faced backlash for tailoring his messaging to different audiences

00:03:04.220 offering conflicting views on canada's pipeline future depending on whether he was speaking in

00:03:09.020 english or french on the other hand conservative leader pierre polievre has pledged to repeal bill

00:03:14.880 c69 if elected prime minister aiming to remove barriers to building major energy projects in canada

00:03:21.020 here's an exchange between polievre and carney in 2021 where he called out the liberal leaders's

00:03:26.020 hypocrisy on pipelines at a committee hearing do you support the prime minister's decision to veto

00:03:32.160 the northern gateway pipeline mr carney uh i i understand the veto of the northern gateway pipeline

00:03:39.520 you support it both given both environmental and commercial reasons do you support it i think it's

00:03:47.560 sensible i wasn't involved in the decision but i think it was the right decision and yet your company

00:03:51.980 has invested billions of dollars in oil companies in both brazil and the uae to buy pipelines uh you've

00:04:00.420 uh you bought uh billions of dollars of pipelines as a company in the last five years do you support

00:04:06.360 those investments uh mr poliev there is a global energy system and one of the issues uh i'm trying to

00:04:14.340 explain a bit of how the economy works uh one of the thank you so much well it may help uh one of the

00:04:21.300 issues for this committee and thinking about a sustainable transition you support it where is

00:04:25.980 canada's role in those in those uh as energy transitions from fossil fuels to renewables and

00:04:33.240 in different jurisdictions into different geography it matters it matters and this is a fundamental

00:04:39.420 point no i'm sorry this is a fundamental i'm sorry you're finally getting to a point you've exceeded

00:04:45.600 the time relevant to this committee's what you're what you're what you're saying is you oppose

00:04:49.900 pipelines in canada but you support them in the uae and in brazil that's what you've actually said

00:04:55.300 there are specific that's your double standard commenting recently on carney's shifting promises

00:05:00.460 polievre told voters to doubt the sincerity of carney's commitments polievre said quote don't believe him

00:05:07.120 in any language alberta minister of energy and minerals brian gene called out the federal

00:05:12.340 government for continuing with pursuing an emissions cap in a post to x he called the cap

00:05:17.820 a ticking time bomb that would explode alberta's economy and shatter the country's economy despite

00:05:23.960 carney trying to present himself as a new prime minister who just got here gene said that despite

00:05:29.280 the new ringleader it was the same cast of characters a cast he said was intent to shut down the energy

00:05:35.500 sector take a listen of what gene had to say the federal government has come out with new details

00:05:40.900 on its emission cap and let me tell you it's clearly a ticking time bomb set to explode alberta's

00:05:47.360 economy and shatter our country's prosperity despite justin trudeau and his radical environment

00:05:53.220 minister's best efforts to brand these regulations positively this is a job crushing production cap

00:05:59.440 that will hurt families hurt businesses and hurt canada's economy make no mistake their intention

00:06:06.160 is another step towards shutting down our energy industry and it's a violation of canada's constitution

00:06:11.880 section 92 a clearly grants provinces exclusive authority over the development of non-renewable

00:06:19.360 resources yet this cap demands a reduction of 1 million barrels a day by 2030 this out-of-touch prime

00:06:25.500 minister cannot ignore canada's constitution and we are ready to take our fight to the courts the

00:06:31.740 evidence of this job and prosperity crushing cap is undeniable three independent firms have shown that

00:06:38.260 this regulation would strike canada's economy hard eliminating over 150 000 jobs and draining 14 billion

00:06:46.500 dollars annually from our economy that's 14 billion dollars that won't be going towards new schools

00:06:51.960 hospitals bridges and roads all for a reckless scheme that will not reduce it's the family and

00:06:59.540 friends event at shoppers drug mart get 20 off almost all regular priced merchandise two days only

00:07:05.420 tuesday february 24th and wednesday february 25th open your pc optimum app to get your coupon

00:07:11.560 this global emissions tweaks won't work this cap must be scrapped we won't stand by as the federal

00:07:21.140 government jeopardizes our prosperity violates our constitution and downgrades our standard of living

00:07:27.160 with its extreme agenda the alberta government celebrated leading canada in housing starts between

00:07:32.400 january and march 2025 the province said that despite accounting for only 13 percent of the country's

00:07:38.480 population it built more than 25 percent of all housing starts so far this year alberta despite

00:07:44.660 receiving far less housing dollars than bc and ontario saw an increase in housing starts of 18

00:07:49.800 while bc saw 38 decrease and ontario saw a 30 decrease compared to last year alberta's minister of

00:07:57.620 seniors community and social services jason nixon said quote after a record-breaking 2024 today's housing

00:08:04.360 starts numbers are just more proof that alberta's plan to build homes is working last year the

00:08:09.480 province launched the stop housing delays online portal for developers to emphasize fast and

00:08:14.460 efficient residential construction the alberta government compared the portal to a quote snitch

00:08:19.800 line on red tape the province also updated the provincial building code and said it continues

00:08:24.800 to attract investment by having the lowest overall taxes in canada and by having no provincial sales tax

00:08:30.720 and the lowest corporate tax rate the province's housing starts between january and march 2025

00:08:35.660 compared to between january and march 2024 grew to 11 470 from 9 744 the biggest cities calgary and

00:08:44.540 edmonton saw 16 and 17 increases in housing starts respectively the province said it will support

00:08:50.980 nine billion dollars in investments into affordable housing to support 25 000 additional low-income

00:08:56.780 households by 2031 that wraps up this week's short show my name is isaac lammer your host of the
