00:00:00.000 The Trudeau Liberals have wasted $42 million on a federal firearm confiscation program that
00:00:06.720 doesn't yet exist. 60 bureaucrats are working full-time on a program designed to confiscate
00:00:12.920 legally acquired property, including firearms which are used to sustain the livelihoods
00:00:18.260 of farmers and hunters. Documents obtained by the National Post reveal that costs could balloon to
00:00:25.500 as high as $2 billion. Ottawa is grasping at straws because provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan
00:00:32.640 and Ontario have refused to aid the federal government in its gun confiscation scheme.
00:00:38.580 The efforts have so far been a disaster worthy of a national inquiry. I mean, there was a time
00:00:43.300 when governments would be held accountable for wasting this much money. But at least one premier
00:00:47.800 has a positive take on the situation. That the program hasn't been a failure because it's failed
00:00:52.820 to confiscate a single firearm, but rather a success. I'm Rachel Emanuel, and this is the
00:00:57.900 Alberta Roundup.
00:01:07.960 So for those of you who were wondering what you just heard, that was my new Alberta Roundup theme song
00:01:15.480 generated by AI. Actually, Andrew Lawton put that together for me. I was feeling very flattered by
00:01:21.520 all the kind things that were said about me in the song. And then I thereafter learned he was
00:01:26.100 making them for basically everybody. So I wasn't as special as I thought I was. I still really like
00:01:30.760 the song. I think I'm going to keep it in the show as our new theme song. Let me know what you guys
00:01:35.500 think about it. Are you a fan or did you prefer the old music? Okay, taking a look at our first story
00:01:40.880 here, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith was asked how she feels about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's
00:01:45.800 gun buyback scheme not confiscating a single firearm so far, despite spending $42 million of
00:01:53.220 taxpayer money. And honestly, I don't know if I can do this one justice. So I'm just going to let
00:01:57.500 the Premier's words speak for themselves. Take a listen. Well, I call that a success that they
00:02:01.400 haven't been able to seize a single law abiding firearms owner's gun. So I wish them continued
00:02:06.860 success at being able to achieve zero compliance with their program. And we are not going to do
00:02:12.080 anything to help them. We believe that the issue is the illegal firearms getting them into the hands
00:02:17.560 of gangs and organized crime coming across the border. And the federal government should be
00:02:21.740 focused on that not focusing on taking guns away from sport shooters, duck hunters and and farmers
00:02:27.580 A friendly reminder that back in 2022, the federal government had asked the provinces for help with
00:02:33.140 confiscating the guns. Specifically, they had asked for Alberta's RCMP to aid in the gun
00:02:37.600 confiscation regime. And then Alberta Justice Minister Tyler Shandra said that it was not a
00:02:42.860 provincial priority. And Alberta's RCMP would not be aiding the federal government's buyback scheme.
00:02:49.040 Taking a look at our next story here. This one is a bit of an oldie, but I had to play it for those
00:02:52.960 of you who missed it. Last weekend, Calgary Mayor Jody Gondek was booed at a Calgary Flames game.
00:02:59.820 This was pretty painful. Take a watch at this video if you haven't seen it already.
00:03:07.600 Now, there was lots of controversy about this online. Many people, even conservatives were
00:03:16.660 saying that it wasn't appropriate and that we should show respect for our elected politicians,
00:03:21.640 including Tamara Leach, who said that she found it painful to watch the video. I'm wondering,
00:03:25.780 what do you guys think? Do you think it is appropriate to boo an elected official? Or do
00:03:29.640 you think that you should show them respect and decency and be civil and polite even when you disagree
00:03:33.680 with their policies? That could or could not be ruining a municipality. Now, of course, we know
00:03:40.940 that the recall Mayor Gondek campaign has been ongoing. As I've covered for you guys, we knew from
00:03:45.840 the beginning that it was going to be unsuccessful because they required over half a million signatures.
00:03:50.860 And the petitioner, that's Landon Johnston, said on this very show that he would not be able to get
00:03:55.020 those signatures. That petition ended on Thursday. The deadline was on Thursday. And volunteers garnered
00:04:01.540 72,000 signatures. So that is a far cry from the over half a million signatures that were needed.
00:04:07.800 Now, we knew from the beginning that this campaign was not going to be successful. I did expect to
00:04:12.280 see more signatures, I'm going to be honest. I know that the campaign had a lot of difficulties. They were
00:04:18.240 not allowed to collect signatures around City Hall and they were chased out of certain other areas.
00:04:23.660 And also, Landon Johnson filed this petition and then other groups sort of gathered around to help
00:04:28.700 out. I think it's one of those things where you really had to hit the ground running. You had to
00:04:32.080 hit the ground running with all your volunteers lined up with a plan in place. And Johnson said
00:04:36.080 on this show, maybe about two weeks into the campaign, that they were about ready and organized
00:04:40.760 with their volunteers. That was really a period of lost time, I would say. So, you know, we knew this
00:04:46.320 campaign wasn't going to be successful. I did expect to see more signatures. I don't know how much of
00:04:49.840 an impact it's going to leave because there were so few people who signed the petition.
00:04:53.620 The real indicator of how successful the impact of the petition has been is Jodi Gondrick herself.
00:04:59.220 Will she change her ways? Will she recognize that she is the most unpopular Calgary mayor of all time
00:05:03.980 and actually seek to put forward policies that people want and that will better their lives? Or will
00:05:08.800 she continue to raise taxes and drive through her anti-Canadian agenda? Just going to take a quick
00:05:15.520 look at this story. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Calgary again this week. He was in the city on
00:05:20.700 Friday for a housing announcement. And of course, he allowed only his bought and paid for legacy media
00:05:26.740 to question him. Just going to play a short clip for you guys now so you can see what our beloved
00:05:31.620 Prime Minister is up to. We want to accelerate pace and construction to levels not seen since the end of
00:05:38.060 the Second World War. To do that, we need to change our approach and adopt innovative technologies.
00:05:44.100 We need more made-in-Canada success stories like here at NRB Modular Solutions, the largest modular
00:05:51.780 building solutions provider in the country. And more centralized manufacturing sites where
00:05:57.520 the best workers in the world, Canadian workers, can build faster for cheaper all year round
00:06:03.840 with the help of innovative solutions around robotics, AI and innovation.
00:06:08.580 That's why, in Budget 2024, we will announce a package of over $600 million, specifically for
00:06:17.880 innovative housing solutions. This package will include the launch of a new $50 million Home Building
00:06:32.100 Technology and Innovation Fund. The goal of this fund will be to provide more homes faster,
00:06:38.580 by scaling up and promoting innovative technologies and materials like modular and prefabricated homes.
00:06:45.040 The package will also include another $50 million to modernize and expedite home building
00:06:51.460 through the regional development agencies. In other positive news, I know we've all been fairly
00:06:56.740 concerned about the drought that was expected for this spring in Alberta. The March that just happened
00:07:01.860 is the second snowiest March on record for Calgary. And I just have to show you this tweet from a friend of the
00:07:07.540 show, Marty Up North, who wrote on X this week. I was listening to the radio yesterday and all the host
00:07:12.360 could bring himself to say was, that's a bit more than the average. No moron. It's almost three times
00:07:18.300 the average. Listening to the media and politicians do mental gymnastics when facts don't agree with
00:07:23.200 their narrative is hilarious. So obviously this is good news for the province. If you've watched
00:07:27.400 the show for a little while, you know by now that I actually hate winter. I hate the snow. I hate the cold.
00:07:32.220 So I don't personally love the snow, but I know that the land and the farmers desperately need
00:07:37.040 it for their crops. So I'm going to choose to see the positive in this. And if you're on X,
00:07:41.180 you should definitely go follow my good friend, Marty Up North. I love his content. He always hits
00:07:45.700 the nail on the head. Okay, everyone moving into our next story here. One of the biggest news stories
00:07:50.700 in the country is happening in my backyard this week. The axe the tax protest on highway one heading
00:07:56.000 west from Calgary to Banff is still ongoing almost a week later. Organizers and protesters are
00:08:01.040 very determined to stay for weeks on end until their plight is heard. If you guys saw my midweek
00:08:06.200 show, you know that the RCMP showed up in full numbers on Tuesday to back protesters up so they
00:08:12.380 could no longer slow highway traffic. On Wednesday, those officers mostly left other than a small
00:08:17.900 contingency left behind to monitor the situation. I wasn't able to get a very clear answer from the
00:08:23.080 RCMP, but they said it looks like they just wanted RCMP there to ensure that protesters were not
00:08:28.480 slowing traffic. At one point on Tuesday, there was about a hundred officers there and there's been
00:08:32.120 about a hundred protesters there every day of the week. So it was about a one-to-one ratio. It was
00:08:36.200 pretty crazy. Some super surreal scenes, although I don't know that they are so surreal anymore because
00:08:41.280 we're just becoming so used to that type of insane police presence and crackdown on freedom-loving
00:08:48.120 Canadians and freedom-loving protesters. So we'll play some of those images for you guys now.
00:09:18.120 I came out here today because people are having trouble buying food and paying rent and paying for
00:09:36.400 their mortgages. We're being taxed again and more and more people are falling behind. They can't keep
00:09:42.200 up. I'm standing here for the people who can't be here because we deserve to have our rights to
00:09:49.940 peace for the protest. And just because the protest is happening so close to my house, I've been trying
00:09:54.020 to get down there every day to do some interviews and just to take some shots to keep you guys updated
00:09:58.360 on the situation. If you'd like to see those, you can follow me on my X account where I post
00:10:02.680 everything. We will link that for you on the video. Moving into our controversy of the week,
00:10:07.300 an Alberta NDP MLA is facing controversy from a Jewish organization over her anti-Israel commentary.
00:10:15.700 The Jewish Federation of Edmonton has accused Edmonton MLA Janice Irwin of cozying up to
00:10:21.180 people who support, quote, the erasure of the state of Israel without condemning Hamas,
00:10:26.360 a recognized terrorist entity by the government of Canada. Among other things, Irwin shared a post
00:10:32.120 denying that Hamas committed mass rape against Israeli women. This comes despite testimony
00:10:37.140 from Israeli women about sexual violence, as well as the United Nations found, quote,
00:10:41.840 reasonable grounds to believe that conflict-related sexual violence, including rape and gang rape,
00:10:46.560 occurred across multiple locations of Israel and the Gaza periphery during the attacks on October 7th.
00:10:52.140 In a statement posted to X, the Jewish Federation of Edmonton accused Irwin of, quote,
00:10:57.120 ardently demonstrating that she does not support all Albertans, including those impacted by the
00:11:01.600 October 7th Hamas terrorist attack. Irwin has not responded to the allegations. Moving into what
00:11:07.380 we're watching in the weeks to come, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says there's a worrying trend
00:11:12.180 of prescription opioids seeping into the illegal market. We covered a few weeks ago that Alberta
00:11:18.080 had asked the federal government to put a chemical tracer in drugs that were part of prescription opioids,
00:11:23.580 which is also referred to as a safe supply. The federal government rejected that request,
00:11:28.940 and now the premier is continuing to raise the alarm over drugs that are coming across the border
00:11:35.100 from BC, where they have the so-called safe supply program, into Alberta. The premier says that BC has
00:11:40.500 a right to develop its own policy, but she needs to look out for the interests of Albertans. Take a listen.
00:11:45.800 We need to know when there's overdoses, if there's some evidence that that came from the, from British
00:11:52.760 Columbia. So we're going to continue pressing on that. My ministers have also met with their
00:11:56.720 counterparts in British Columbia so that we can talk about how we can get more data on this. Um, they're
00:12:02.880 right now, it's a bit of a, an unknown how much, uh, of the drug seizures contain these, uh, these prescribed,
00:12:10.960 um, high powered opioids. And we think we need to know that information. In the same press conference where she made
00:12:16.540 those comments, the premier also announced two new organizations dedicated to helping those struggling with
00:12:21.160 addiction. The first organization recovery, Alberta will become the provincial health agency responsible
00:12:27.540 for mental health and addiction services currently being offered by Alberta health services. And the
00:12:33.440 second organization is the Canadian center of recovery excellence, which will conduct research and
00:12:39.480 program evaluations, provide advice to the government on international best practices and develop
00:12:45.540 standards of practice on mental health and addiction. And that second organization will be a crown
00:12:49.560 corporation funded by the Alberta government. And finally, moving into our weekly comment roundup,
00:12:53.800 I pulled these comments from my midweek episode, which exclusively covered the carbon tax protest.
00:12:59.480 You guys can go take a look at that. I have a lot of interview content in there with many people who
00:13:03.560 are out there at the protest, including some who said they were disappointed that Danielle Smith did not
00:13:08.100 show up to the protest and that she had asked protesters not to block traffic. Let's take a look at some of
00:13:12.920 these responses. User Super Ginray said, I think Danielle Smith's statement was completely reasonable.
00:13:18.140 She seems to be doing what she can to oppose the unholy liberal NDP federal alliance that's
00:13:24.260 intentionally making life miserable for all Canadians. User Bev Nate said, quote, good grief.
00:13:30.160 No, Smith didn't need to be there. She testified at committee and did a great job praising Alberta
00:13:34.920 and talked against the carbon tax. Everyone paying attention knows how she feels about a carbon tax.
00:13:40.840 She does not need to give the MSM or Trudeau any ammunition to use against her. She has done more for this
00:13:47.180 province in the last little while than any premier I know. Finally, user Sagana said,
00:13:53.140 Danielle Smith should be asking who ordered those officers to be there. If it wasn't her,
00:13:57.680 it was someone butting their nose into her province's business. Not a good look. Okay,
00:14:03.400 everyone, that's all we have time for today. Please like this video and subscribe to True North if you

00:14:27.200 weekend. Have a good one. God bless.
