If it's not the Prime Minister or the globalist cabal trying to beat you into submission,
00:00:04.340
then it's Hollywood. Or should I say, Hollywood wannabes. The Canadian Junos took place this week
00:00:10.060
and it was every bit as cringy as you can imagine. The show is so embarrassing that Canadians with
00:00:16.340
actual musical success and talent can't even bother to show up. Leaving one-hit wonders and
00:00:23.080
Calgary natives Tegan and Sarah to take to the stage to lecture us all about the importance
00:00:28.320
of allowing children to mutilate themselves. Now, if you're struggling to remember who they are,
00:00:33.920
you're not alone. The last time anyone cared about Tegan and Sarah's music, the only news
00:00:38.320
delivery I partook in was my paper route. It's obvious that they've turned to politics to find
00:00:43.440
the success and recognition that they once craved from a musical career. But Alberta politics already
00:00:48.700
has enough bad actors and we don't need washed up sloppy seconds from the Canadian Junos.
00:00:54.520
I'm Rachel Emanuel and this is the Alberta Roundup.
00:00:58.320
Taking a look at our first story here, at the recent Juno Awards in Halifax,
00:01:12.480
Calgary musical duo Tegan and Sarah took aim at the Alberta government's decision to ban transgender
00:01:18.640
surgery for minors. The sisters said the Alberta government policy amounts to a quote, attack
00:01:23.920
on LGBTQ rights while accepting the humanitarian award for their foundation's work. Take a listen
00:01:30.700
for yourself. If the world were not so hostile to us LGBTQ plus people, we would see ourselves purely
00:01:38.180
as musicians. Advocating for our community's rights is a great privilege and we are dedicated
00:01:44.580
to confronting any form of discrimination that threatens the well-being of our community.
00:01:53.580
Threats like the Alberta government's attempt to prevent trans youth from accessing vital care.
00:01:59.400
These attacks are harmful because they are directed at the kids who need our support the most.
00:02:11.980
The award was of course presented by transgender actor Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page.
00:02:18.500
Page is also a member of the Tegan and Sarah Foundation board and the foundation was formed in 2016 after President Donald J.
00:02:26.400
Trump was elected to advocate for quote, economic justice, health and representation for LGBTQ girls
00:02:34.060
and women. In a statement to True North, Danielle Smith's press secretary responded to the attack
00:02:38.780
saying quote, the government is introducing these policies across several ministries to preserve the
00:02:44.480
choices children and youth have before potentially making life-altering and often irreversible adult
00:02:49.820
decisions. The government is also bringing in health care professionals who specialize in transgender care
00:02:55.660
to work with transgender adults. You might remember that when Daniel Smith made this announcement a few weeks
00:03:00.580
back, she said that currently transgender adults have to travel out of province to receive care.
00:03:06.120
Moving into our next story here, Tucker Carlson is an oling adept at drawing large crowds.
00:03:11.760
He's also good for business, at least according to one Alberta credit union. Membership at Bow Valley Credit Union
00:03:17.640
has expanded by 3% since it was the headline sponsor for Tucker Carlson's Canadian tour earlier this year.
00:03:24.060
Bow Valley CEO Brett Olin told me that the growth comes despite legacy media outlets reporting that the
00:03:30.700
partnership negatively impacted the credit union. Olin said quote, since the mainstream media started with
00:03:37.000
their vitriol towards Bow Valley, new membership continues to speed up as we hold firm with our
00:03:42.260
position. The growth totals 356 new business and personal accounts and equals more than 26 million in new
00:03:49.640
deposits. In contrast, Bow Valley lost 17 accounts and just over $400,000 in deposits. So you can see
00:03:57.300
they clearly came ahead with this one. And let's take a look at some of that legacy media criticism of
00:04:03.140
Bow Valley. In February, the Cochran Eagle criticized Bow Valley for sponsoring the Carlson events and reported
00:04:09.920
that the Airdrie Cochran NDP would be moving funds from the credit union in protest. Just out of curiosity,
00:04:16.280
how much money do you think that NDP branch even had in their bank account? My guess is they probably
00:04:20.880
had like an empty line of credit, but no actual funds. As well, the Rocky Mountain Outlook's local
00:04:25.580
journalism initiative reporter, meaning a journalist whose salary is paid for by the federal government,
00:04:31.360
accused Bow Valley of quote, coming under fire for a so-called marketing strategy to expand its
00:04:37.220
membership and working in socially conservative circles. Moving into our next story here, Alberta Premier
00:04:42.560
Danielle Smith testified at the House of Commons Estimates and Operations Committee on Thursday.
00:04:48.320
The Premier has been imploring the federal government to not raise its carbon tax, which is of course
00:04:53.900
scheduled to increase on April 1st. And she's been making that call along with six other Premiers.
00:05:00.200
Here's a look at what the Premier had to tell MPs this week.
00:05:03.120
Families are being forced to make tough choices just to put food on the table. Businesses are having to
00:05:08.220
make sacrifices to keep the lights on. Social services are under intense strain as more and
00:05:13.040
more people reach out for help, many for the first time in their lives. Albertans and all Canadians
00:05:18.040
need common sense, compassion and responsible government to prevail. That's why I'm urging you
00:05:23.060
today to heed the calls of Canadians across the country and suspend the increase in the carbon tax on
00:05:28.860
April 1st. Moving into the controversy of the week, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she wants
00:05:33.520
more control over immigration after the federal government declined to increase the number of
00:05:38.680
skilled workers allotted to the province. In a letter, Smith asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
00:05:43.340
to re-evaluate his government's decision to limit allocations for Alberta's Provincial Nominee
00:05:48.680
Program, saying Alberta's population growth is the highest seen in four decades and the province
00:05:54.240
requires more workers. The Premier also said that Ottawa should respect Section 95 of the Constitution Act
00:06:00.620
and let Alberta determine the number of skilled workers led into the province. In a statement,
00:06:06.280
Smith said, quote, we continue to experience labor shortages that could be resolved by welcoming
00:06:10.940
skilled workers from around the world, including evacuees from Ukraine, many of whom have the exact
00:06:16.900
skills that our job market most needs. Let us welcome the skilled individuals we need into our
00:06:22.220
province on our terms. Section 95 of the Constitution Act 1867 relates to federal and provincial
00:06:28.960
legislative jurisdiction over agriculture and immigration. The federal government's provincial
00:06:34.440
nominee program chooses which skilled applicants will be admitted into a given province or territory.
00:06:40.240
Last week, Ottawa told the province that it would receive 9,750 skilled workers. That's the same
00:06:46.180
number we were given in 2023 and down from the 10,140 skilled workers that Ottawa initially promised us for
00:06:53.320
this year. John Carpe, president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, said it was
00:06:57.840
fair of Smith to invoke the Constitution Act because Section 95 requires that the province receives
00:07:04.280
provincial input on immigration. He said, quote, it's good and relevant to remind the federal government.
00:07:10.540
Carpe also said that while Ottawa is not in conflict with the letter of the law, they do appear to be in
00:07:15.360
conflict with the spirit of the law, which requires the federal government to accommodate the needs of
00:07:20.280
the provinces. And if the province with the strongest and the fastest growing economy requires more
00:07:25.560
skilled workers, he said, quote, absent compelling reasons, the federal government should accommodate
00:07:31.000
that. Moving into our watching in the weeks to come, Alberta NDP leadership hopeful in the head
00:07:35.980
Nenshi's success at signing up new members has caused at least one competitor to drop out. But new data
00:07:42.460
reveals that he has an uphill battle against Alberta Premier Daniel Smith if he wins the leadership
00:07:47.660
contest. Edmonton MLA Raki Pancelli dropped out of the race this week and announced that she would be
00:07:52.560
backing the former Calgary mayor. The Alberta NDP has declined to release updated party numbers,
00:07:57.880
but Pancelli said membership numbers provided to the leadership candidates by the party reveal that
00:08:02.940
Nenshi has more than doubled party membership since he announced his leadership bid two weeks ago.
00:08:08.640
The Alberta NDP had 6,224 members at the end of December, and the party says it will release an
00:08:15.100
updated list in May once all new members are vetted. An abacus data poll released on Wednesday revealed
00:08:20.880
that Nenshi is the most well-known candidate, and he's also the only candidate with a clear net
00:08:26.100
positive impression. However, when it comes to competing with Smith, province-wide support for
00:08:31.280
an Alberta NDP led by Nenshi was at 38%, compared with 53% who said they would vote for Danielle Smith's
00:08:38.600
United Conservative Party. My question of the week for you all is would you rather vote for an Alberta
00:08:43.100
NDP led by the head Nenshi or United Conservative Party led by Danielle Smith? Drop your answer in the
00:08:48.740
comments below. Nenshi also had a campaign stop in Edmonton this week. Let's take a look at that
00:08:53.200
crowd. If I was a liberal, this is where I would say that the crowd looks so old and so white, but
00:08:57.560
since I'm not, my only comment is going to be that, man, there are a lot of people wearing masks in that
00:09:02.780
crowd. I really thought we were over the COVID thing by now. I guess some people will just never let
00:09:07.200
it go. And before we move into our weekly comment roundup, Nenshi wasn't the only one to host a
00:09:11.620
political rally in Edmonton this week. Federal Conservative leader Pierre Polyev also made a stop in
00:09:16.440
Edmonton for his Axe the Tax rally. Let's take a quick look at that.
00:09:20.760
Seven premiers across Canada, seven premiers and 70% of Canadians have called on Trudeau to spike
00:09:30.000
the height, but they wouldn't have had the courage to do it had there not been a trailblazer leading
00:09:36.360
the way in your common sense conservative premier decree. Okay, everyone. And finally, moving into our
00:09:42.260
weekly comment roundup. Our first comment here is from a user with a bunch of letters and numbers. I'm not
00:09:46.280
going to read that, but they said, recall Gondek is a fine idea, but too many Calgarians are too
00:09:51.160
ignorant of how badly she and Nenshi have harmed Calgary and turned it into an unlikable city with
00:09:55.920
horrific policies that hurt so many citizens. Nenshi and Gondek appear to be of the same mind and it
00:10:01.400
shows how far Calgary has fallen. I think you're absolutely correct. It seems that most people
00:10:04.980
really just pay attention to federal or even global politics. They also pay a bit of attention to the
00:10:10.260
province when it's actually decisions being made by your municipal government that tend to affect you
00:10:14.920
most. So it makes a lot of sense to go to those city hall meetings and pay a close mind to what
00:10:19.460
is going on right at home. User Elaine says, none of these politicians are worth the cost. Pay
00:10:24.540
reductions are in order. She is of course correct. And finally, at Glenn Young says, the vandalism only
00:10:30.440
highlighted the recall Gondek campaign. I got a few friends to sign up who never would have noticed
00:10:34.940
the campaign if it didn't make the news. Gondek is so scared she'll ban all signature collectors from
00:10:39.940
public spaces the city owns. This only illustrates the authoritarian and totalitarianism of Gondek and
00:10:45.380
her supporters. It's very interesting that the vandalism actually helped to raise the public
00:10:49.220
profile of the recall Gondek campaign and that it led to some extra signatures. I hadn't heard that
00:10:53.520
before. So thank you for sharing that story. Okay everyone, that's all we have time for today. As
00:10:57.480
