00:00:00.000 matt gates the biggest firebrand inside of the house of representatives you're not taking matt
00:00:08.400 gates off the board okay because matt gates is an american patriot and matt gates is an american
00:00:13.720 hero we will not continue to allow the uniparty to run this town without a fight i want to thank
00:00:20.880 you matt gates for holding the line matt gates is a courageous man if we had hundreds of matt gates
00:00:28.320 in dc the country turns around it's that simple he's so tough he's so strong he's smart and he loves
00:00:35.280 this country matt gates it is the honor of my life to fight alongside each and every one of you
00:00:42.860 we will save america it's choose your fighter time send in the firebrands
00:00:58.320 17 years ago i was elected to a seat in congress that i couldn't get an internship for
00:01:19.120 today i sit here having served as your whip leader and as a 55th speaker of the house
00:01:25.000 as the son of a firefighter from bakersfield my story is the story of america for me
00:01:32.600 every moment came with a great deal of devotion and responsibility
00:01:37.160 giving my best to all of you has been my greatest honor
00:01:42.040 i'm proud of what we have accomplished we won a house majority twice
00:01:47.960 we elected more republican women veterans and minorities to congress than ever before
00:01:55.560 we reduced the deficit by over two trillion dollars while protecting the full faith and credit
00:02:01.640 of our nation we kept our government operating and our troops paid while wars broke out around the world
00:02:09.960 traveling the country and serving with all of you i have encountered far more people
00:02:15.640 that want to build something than those who want to tear it down i have faith in this country
00:02:22.120 because america is more than a country america is an idea today i am driven by the same purpose
00:02:29.640 that i felt when i arrived in congress but now it is time to pursue my passion in a new arena
00:02:38.200 while i'll be departing the house at the end of this year
00:02:41.000 i will never ever give up fighting for this country that i love so much
00:02:47.720 to all those who have supported me through the years especially our constituents thank you from the
00:02:54.440 bottom of my heart we did our part and when the stakes were the highest we rose to the challenge
00:03:02.600 we were willing to risk it all no matter the odds no matter the personal cost
00:03:08.600 simply put we did the right thing thank you god bless you and god bless america
00:03:18.760 that's a wrap
00:03:19.400 that is indeed a wrap this is matt gates we are live on firebrand broadcasting from room 2021 of
00:03:31.320 the rayburn house office building here at the capitol complex on washington dc and that was former
00:03:36.040 house speaker kevin mccarthy announcing his intention to leave the congress to quit at the end of the
00:03:41.880 year you'll remember back in january kevin mccarthy said it's not how you start it's how you finish and it
00:03:47.320 appears he is indeed finished this announcement from speaker mccarthy coming the day after his
00:03:53.240 top lieutenant patrick mckenry announced his retirement from the congress the key difference
00:03:58.600 is that mckenry seems to be indicating a willingness to serve out the entire term that his voters elected
00:04:03.480 him to kevin mccarthy in turn saying if he cannot run the place and be speaker then he will leave so
00:04:11.000 there is an establishment exodus from the united states republican conference and it's my hope
00:04:16.680 that we backfill these establishment lobbyist drawn entities with folks who are willing to fight for
00:04:23.720 the america first agenda to reduce wars to get out of these bad trade deals and to stop the illegal
00:04:30.280 immigration that is overrunning our country and we have to provide a check on the bite administration
00:04:35.400 that continues to spend us into oblivion and to more debt and to defang this weaponized government
00:04:42.280 that's been turned against our fellow americans kevin mccarthy was not useful in that fight in
00:04:47.160 many ways he inhibited it and now he is leaving but there is a very real math problem that we are
00:04:53.320 confronted with for this departure for all of the self-congratulatory videos that kevin mccarthy may
00:04:59.880 make him leaving his unwillingness to stay and vote for even the most basic of republican priorities
00:05:05.800 may imperil our ability to get the job done so here's the math we have a four-seat majority that
00:05:12.600 we were elected to errantly foolishly in violation of precedent and due process we made the decision to expel
00:05:22.120 george santos now most republicans in the conference voted against expelling santos but enough voted with
00:05:29.400 the errant ethics committee that he is now gone that takes four down to three now mccarthy is saying
00:05:37.160 he's leaving at the end of the year takes us down to two and then bill johnson the republican from ohio
00:05:44.600 has indicated that he is taking the university presidency at youngstown state that will leave us
00:05:49.720 with a one seat majority sure hope everyone eats their veggies stays healthy over the break otherwise this
00:05:57.640 thing could tip the balance to the democrats now there has been some commentary on social media
00:06:02.600 that i am to blame that it's my fault that kevin mccarthy is quitting and leaving early
00:06:10.200 i don't know anyone else who would just say well if i can't run the place i'm gonna leave
00:06:15.080 nancy pelosi for all her flaws and there are many she at least stuck around she didn't hurt her team by
00:06:22.200 saying well if i can't be the quarterback i'm just gonna take the ball and go home that seems
00:06:27.560 to be what we're getting from kevin mccarthy this is not an act of patriotism or moving on to the
00:06:32.600 next fight it is an act of abject selfishness and it is revealing that if kevin mccarthy can't swing
00:06:39.640 the gavel and be in charge and make the decisions that he's not willing to be a team player for all the
00:06:46.040 criticism i've received about not being a team player i'm here i'm doing the work i'm taking votes
00:06:52.040 and the republican establishment might not like how i vote all the time but i'm not facilitating
00:06:58.920 a path to hand power to the democrats that would be more in line with what we see from the former
00:07:04.520 speaker who is on his way out the door uh we uh also are covering an important story right now out of
00:07:13.320 pensacola florida let's pull up that wear report suspect in custody following a bomb threat at nas
00:07:21.480 pensacola and for your sense of context today is the four year anniversary of the terrorist attack
00:07:30.360 at nas pensacola that left three of our sailors dead and killed at the hands of a saudi arabian
00:07:37.240 military official who had acquired a gun had brought it onto campus we later learned that
00:07:42.760 that saudi arabian official was inspired by al-qaeda on the arabian peninsula there were a number of our
00:07:50.280 first responders and police who were harmed in getting there and limiting the carnage that was
00:07:55.720 visited upon our community at the negligence of the kingdom of saudi arabia they are required when
00:08:01.880 they have people training in the united states on our aircraft and on our weapon systems to be
00:08:07.080 monitoring their social media to be communicating with them to see that they do not fall victim of
00:08:11.960 any type of radicalization and because of that negligence from the kingdom of saudi arabia
00:08:17.880 people ended up dead in my community now to date the kingdom has not stepped forward to take
00:08:24.040 responsibility to ensure that the first responders who took bullets and saw their lives forever changed
00:08:30.840 were in any way uh compensated for that damage damage caused by saudi arabia's negligence so i've
00:08:37.800 introduced legislation to hold saudi arabia accountable and we were talking about that today giving
00:08:43.720 interviews about it building a coalition for it when we saw this news a suspect is in custody
00:08:50.600 following a bomb threat at nas pensacola wednesday morning according to nas pensacola
00:08:55.640 a suspected bomb threat was made on base at 9 35 a.m the escambia county sheriff's office received
00:09:02.360 the call about the threat at about 10 a.m the base was then put on lockdown as naval security investigated
00:09:09.240 nas pensacola said at 11 15 a.m that a suspect was in custody naval security forces in coordination
00:09:15.240 with local law enforcement partners executed a pre-planned response and are in the process of
00:09:20.280 clearing the affected areas nas pensacola said in a release no one was injured and the individual
00:09:25.800 suspect uh is in custody so we uh have yet to see if there's any evidence of that person working in
00:09:33.560 concert with others i am eager to see whether or not this has any relationship to the historic nature of
00:09:40.280 this day i have gotten reports that on telegram and other sites al-qaeda related groups were celebrating
00:09:47.960 this anniversary and this terrorist attack in pensacola florida and we will get to the bottom
00:09:53.720 of this particular bomb threat and we'll give you uh updates and reports accordingly report i saw in
00:10:01.640 the washington examiner i want to bring to your attention the piece is titled children with liberal
00:10:06.920 parents are more likely to suffer mental health problems the piece says children who grow up in
00:10:12.200 politically liberal households are more likely to suffer mental health problems than their conservative
00:10:17.800 peers according to a new study an institute for family studies and gallup report found that
00:10:23.400 political ideology is one of the strongest predictors of which caregiving styles a parent adopts
00:10:29.720 and conservative parents are associated with the best mental health outcomes for their children
00:10:35.240 conservative parents have several key distinctions in their relationship with their children
00:10:39.480 that inform mental health care outcomes including the ability to effectively discipline their children
00:10:45.800 while also displaying affection and responding to their needs the right-leaning parents also have
00:10:50.840 better quality relationships characterized by fewer arguments more warmth and a stronger bond
00:10:57.960 political ideology is just one predictive factor in the overarching conclusion of the study which is that
00:11:03.800 having high quality relationships between children and their parents is the most important factor
00:11:09.400 in achieving positive mental health outcomes so if you're not conservative for your pocketbook
00:11:16.840 or your country be conservative because it'll make you a better parent well having good relationships
00:11:22.520 with your children make you a better parent and it seems as though conservatives are drawn to the
00:11:26.600 very types of relationships that are productive and nurturing and warm and that's something we encourage
00:11:32.600 for everyone we got an update out of the department of justice today regarding the investigations they're
00:11:38.440 doing vis-a-vis ukraine and war crimes take a listen so to washington dc here we go as previously
00:11:48.200 mentioned this is merrick garland uh he is explaining why the justice department has filed the first ever
00:11:54.200 charges under a u.s war crime statute against four russian affiliated military personnel in what is
00:12:02.200 described as heinous crimes against an american citizen so drop on in here in dc
00:12:08.120 well kirchian was one of the commanding officers and valeri and nazar the lower ranking soldiers and
00:12:14.760 their co-conspirators during the abduction we allege that those defendants threw the victim to the ground
00:12:21.400 while he was naked tied his hands behind his back pointed a gun at his head and beat him with their feet
00:12:27.880 their fists and the stocks of their guns we allege that they forced him into a building that russia
00:12:33.640 affiliated forces were using as a jail and into a closet that they were using as a jail cell we
00:12:40.280 allege that as they interrogated him they tortured him they beat him again with a gun they punched him
00:12:47.000 in his chest and stomach they threatened to shoot him they stripped off his clothes and took pictures
00:12:52.680 one of their conspirators threatened to sexually assault him
00:12:55.960 we are back live so what does it mean that the department of justice now is trying to bring these
00:13:04.680 war crimes actions against russians due to the conflict in ukraine well undeniably if there were
00:13:11.640 war crimes committed and atrocities those should be brought out to the public but is now really the
00:13:17.640 opportune time to do that the number one goal of the united states of america vis-a-vis the war in ukraine
00:13:24.600 should be to bring that war to an end to a conclusion it's one of the reasons i've been
00:13:30.360 fighting against all these efforts to send more money and military material into the region and
00:13:35.480 it's one reason why i wouldn't be showcasing the war crimes pleadings at this stage of the game
00:13:41.240 because it is very likely that those accusations could make it even more difficult to bring these
00:13:47.720 parties into any sort of peace accord now the the efforts to investigate collect evidence i support
00:13:56.040 all of that we should get the evidence but when you're out there accusing the russian military of
00:14:01.240 war crimes it does increase the the terrible prospect of some sort of escalatory accident where perhaps
00:14:09.960 nuclear authorities or codes are devolved and someone who thinks that might be brought up on war crimes
00:14:15.320 believes that their only way out is some sort of detonation of a tactical nuclear weapon or
00:14:19.720 even the launch of an intercontinental ballistic delivery system so i really really question the
00:14:26.600 timing of the attorney general on this no problem with collecting the evidence but when you're out
00:14:31.400 there at this stage of hostilities trying to make the case on war crimes i think you put the cart
00:14:37.480 before the horse a good bit and as we're having this discussion there are ongoing negotiations about how to
00:14:43.560 deal with the desire on the part of many republicans and democrats principally mitch mcconnell and joe
00:14:49.240 biden to lash ukraine money to israel money or border money or taiwan money and as i've said many times i
00:14:57.240 do not believe that we are well served to address these questions collectively the war in israel is
00:15:05.240 fundamentally different than the war in ukraine which is fundamentally different than you will see
00:15:08.840 potentially in the taiwan straits and in the south china sea and if we do not look at those as
00:15:13.960 separate geopolitical events my concern is that we're just writing checks to the military industrial
00:15:19.800 complex without any real sense that our objectives are more likely to be achieved as a consequence of
00:15:26.680 that spending and so we'll watch it closely to date house speaker mike johnson has not
00:15:32.200 fallen for the mcconnell biden plan he's resisted the supplemental that the white house wanted and
00:15:39.880 he's told mitch mcconnell that we are not going to be able to lash these things together with the current
00:15:44.520 offers and the current discussions we've seen around the senate that is positive we want to keep the speaker
00:15:50.200 on that direction uh we had an odd hearing in the house of representatives yesterday i want to bring your
00:15:56.520 attention to it uh we're talking about women's sports title nine there are federal equities at play
00:16:02.760 there we don't want men participating in women's sports and from no less than the national women's
00:16:08.760 legal center we get testimony from fatima gross who says women just need to lose more gracefully to men
00:16:16.520 take a listen and success in school sports depends on a whole range of factors including how hard you work
00:16:23.800 and coaching and access to really good resources and facilities and trans students participate in
00:16:31.720 sports for the same reason as their kids because it is fun because it creates belonging and community
00:16:39.800 because it teaches so much about persistence and leadership and and discipline unless they learn to
00:16:47.240 lose gracefully hopefully and often they learn to win with dignity hopefully
00:16:54.440 um they learn to do the sort of work that means you have higher grades and stay connected to school
00:17:01.400 i want every kid to have that chance to have the chance to play so i feel compelled to just in my
00:17:08.840 testimony with a few ideas for the committee to pursue if it really wants to work on this issue
00:17:14.200 we could make it safer for student athletes who report harassment and sexual misconduct we could address resource
00:17:19.960 justice
00:17:26.600 or gracefully that's what uh that's what they're saying from the national women's legal center with
00:17:33.800 women like that who needs men you've you've got to at times just pinch yourself when these woke witnesses
00:17:41.880 come before and the congress when we're trying to evaluate the ways to protect title nine and they're
00:17:46.600 and they're saying things that make absolutely no sense it reminds me of the hearing we had where
00:17:50.680 women's groups were coming forward to advocate for the rights of men to have abortions and now
00:17:56.120 apparently men to participate in women's sports i don't think women should have to lose gracefully to
00:18:01.240 men i'm more of the riley gains school of thought on that but man it's bizarre when they come and
00:18:08.120 spread that vial before our congressional committees uh before we get out of here i want to bring your
00:18:14.040 attention to something going on in our hemisphere in latin america that threatens to really destabilize
00:18:20.280 energy markets and the like venezuela has taken a referendum justifying their annexation of about two
00:18:29.400 thirds of neighboring guayana uh there there was no real geopolitical basis for this referendum
00:18:37.400 venezuela believes that this was part of their country prior to a determination that british guayana
00:18:41.880 had those claims back in 1899 now maduro facing an election and a lot of popular discontent is seeking
00:18:50.760 to externalize his conflict and his failures by saying well what venezuela really needs is to take over
00:18:58.200 two-thirds of guayana there's a lot of consternation about this in guayana as you might imagine here's
00:19:05.400 guayanan president ali reacting to this news we'll talk about on the other side well uh first of all uh
00:19:13.240 i want to make it very clear that the borders were settled in 1899 venezuela and then british guayana
00:19:20.680 participated fully in the settlement of this border they both agreed on the border the border uh was then
00:19:27.000 enacted in venezuela local laws and also stamps were produced uh with the borders as it exists today
00:19:35.800 when we were about to get independence venezuela raised the controversy and the geneva agreement
00:19:42.520 was entered into in that agreement it provided that if the controversy could not have been settled
00:19:48.920 between the parties then the united nations secretary general would determine the mechanism to settle
00:19:55.000 that and the mechanism that was determined by the united nations secretary general was the icj and
00:20:01.640 that is where we believe this matter must be settled but as you rightfully said venezuela is faced with
00:20:07.400 many challenges political challenges uh democratic challenges and challenges within a society itself
00:20:14.200 many believe that uh this is a distraction to the what what obtains in venezuela now but we are taking this
00:20:21.800 very seriously because of the narrative that is coming out of venezuela uh the threat that comes out of
00:20:27.560 venezuela and recently venezuela opened defiance of the international court of justice when uh it the the
00:20:36.600 leaders there basically said they will not uh adhere to the orders of the icj now this is an important issue for
00:20:45.160 us in this region because we want this region to remain a zone of peace we want this this this this
00:20:51.400 is an important part of the western hemisphere all right so here's what i think is really going on in
00:20:59.000 venezuela and in guyana when you had the war breakout with ukraine and russia gas prices were soaring in the
00:21:05.320 united states and so the biden administration was doing everything and anything possible to try to get
00:21:11.000 more fuel into our supply that's why they drew down on the strategic petroleum reserve a foolish
00:21:17.320 decision that undid what president trump had done to fill up the strategic petroleum reserve so that
00:21:23.400 we would be more resilient as a country if there were some run on natural resources so joe biden was
00:21:30.200 willing to draw down on that over politics whereas trump put us in a stronger position for national security
00:21:36.440 that's not all the biden administration did they went to iran and made deals with iran to get more
00:21:42.680 iranian liquefied natural gas and crude oil into the marketplace and what did that result in iran having
00:21:49.000 claimed to billions of dollars which was then moved from european banks into qatari banks and now that extra
00:21:56.360 six billion dollars that joe biden is unlocked for the iranian regime we see put to use in the hands of
00:22:03.640 the houthis and hamas and hezbollah and iranian backed proxies throughout syria and northern iraq and
00:22:11.240 it is causing real damage to our service members u.s contractors in the region our allies are becoming
00:22:18.840 more anxious and destabilized because we made sure that iran was more flush with cash than previously so
00:22:27.240 that we were able to justify this continuing pressure against russia but it wasn't just there the biden
00:22:33.320 administration dispatched a number of their senior officials down to venezuela and they have taken
00:22:38.840 actions to ease the trump era sanctions on venezuela that were keeping the maduro regime in check wasn't
00:22:44.920 allowing maduro to export his particular brand of socialist communist dictatorship they weren't able to engage
00:22:52.920 engage in these expeditions there were less of a threat to colombia under the trump administration
00:22:59.720 but now that more venezuelan oil is online that sanctions have been reduced on venezuela well we see
00:23:07.800 them more dangerous more adventurous now making this claim on two-thirds of another country so i guess my
00:23:16.120 question to the audience is this what bothers you more russia being interventionist in crimea
00:23:23.960 or venezuela being interventionist in guayana i think we should be most focused on the destabilizing
00:23:30.680 activities that are closest to our borders that could lead to refugees that could lead to war breaking
00:23:37.480 out in central america eroding nation states creating a more permissible environment for transnational
00:23:43.080 criminal organizations drug trafficking rings human trafficking rings that's what's going to happen
00:23:48.600 with a stronger more malign more capable venezuela but oh no we've got washington politicians trying to
00:23:56.520 act as though they're big tough on russia and they're caring more about crimea than the the crimea
00:24:03.240 scenario playing out in our own region and obviously discovered the discovery of natural gas and oil other
00:24:10.600 minerals in these areas of the ikebo region of guayana are accelerating venezuela's ambitions but they
00:24:18.600 wouldn't have the ability to act on those if it wasn't for the biden administration's weakness we have
00:24:25.720 to realize that there are resources in countries where we don't get along with the governments or the
00:24:30.920 people and we don't want to see them enriched but at the same time when we play this almost foucault style
00:24:36.520 game of pressing power down in one place and hoping it doesn't emerge in another the consequence is either
00:24:42.760 higher prices for americans or more bad guys get more bad stuff
00:24:49.960 what we have done in this ukraine war in russia has created a cascade of negative geopolitical consequences
00:24:58.520 in europe in africa in the middle east and in latin america and the smartest thing we could do is bring that
00:25:05.560 conflict to a close and if we did so we would have a stronger hand in dealing with the dictators in our
00:25:11.640 own mists so we'll be watching this situation very carefully i saw a report today that maduro on the back
00:25:19.640 of this referendum that you just saw president ali discussing was encouraging venezuelan oil companies
00:25:25.240 to go lay claim drill extract and what do you think is going to happen there you're going to have some of
00:25:33.160 the guy on in contracts and contractors believing they have a claim of right there this thing could
00:25:38.440 get kinetic you could see vandalism you could see terrorism all right in the caribbean all in the
