00:00:48.360
welcome back to firebrand i'm congressman matt gates we're broadcasting live out of room 2021
00:00:59.200
of the rayburn house office building here in the capitol complex in washington dc and here in the
00:01:04.180
gates office we do not tolerate bullies we particularly don't like it when it constrains
00:01:10.380
free speech and on college campuses we've seen an increasing number of administrators
00:01:14.680
try to skirt the law avoid the constitution and really limit what can be said that we would
00:01:21.880
normally allow particularly if it's someone expressing a viewpoint on the political right
00:01:26.300
the executive uh producer of this podcast joel valdez our communications director actually i think
00:01:33.300
kind of came to us by virtue of the free speech on college campus movement and uh you know joe i'm
00:01:39.040
going to get into that in a minute but the latest iteration uh that got in my craw i saw it online
00:01:44.940
was at clemson university where a group of students associated with the clemson college republicans
00:01:51.680
were out campaigning for a congressional candidate in an open seat and they had this encounter with
00:02:13.780
you can't get the lawyers we're not kicking your arrest we would just like also the specific
00:02:20.680
clemson policies so we can double you can get the police officers over here and they can explain
00:02:24.920
i will not get into this we don't like this get them over here i know that's gone sir
00:02:31.000
they're saying we're soliciting we're just selling stop i'm listening to the cop the cop
00:02:39.840
we did it but we did it probably this year for the trump campaign and they were it was all fine
00:02:43.920
not not even football game yes yes at the football game
00:02:52.260
when we go door to door to canvas for political campaigns
00:03:00.400
i'm just saying i'm just going to walk us through it okay
00:03:03.120
they have told you that you're in violation of the university policy
00:03:07.600
right and they said that what you're thinking you can't do okay
00:03:16.840
no no no what i'm not asking you if you know what you're talking about
00:03:19.360
i'm asking you if you will abide by what the university has asked
00:03:39.580
is that what you're telling your driver's license please
00:03:47.660
or like to what can you clarify like what we're allowed to do or not
00:03:54.380
there are people who deal specifically in university policy
00:04:27.740
and then you're going to make sanctions for university
00:04:37.880
who should I call to get clarification on the policy
00:04:40.240
because you did not provide me the clarification I need
00:23:15.180
like kudzu this desire to to limit speech and so
00:23:30.260
information does need to be shown to the public
00:23:37.680
it's a it's symptomatic of that kudzu like you're
00:23:45.980
Clemson and yeah we need to get more information
00:23:49.440
about that because it's it's totally ridiculous
00:24:00.220
northeast and and other crazy liberal places that
00:24:03.800
deal with this stuff all the time and and having
00:24:12.800
together in terms of social media and just general
00:24:14.740
support is so helpful but congressman Gates that is
00:24:18.040
an awesome letter I I do appreciate you you know
00:24:21.000
sticking up for us on this behalf and I am hearing
00:24:24.740
that there may be officials at Clemson University
00:24:28.080
watching this very podcast right now can you talk a
00:24:31.060
little bit more about that Trevor and if you've heard
00:24:32.460
any information on the response yeah yeah so I mean the
00:24:37.420
university's clearly watching this right now because I mean this
00:24:42.500
is bad PR for them and bad PR is means money it means a lot of
00:24:48.040
things are going wrong on their ends which is unfortunate because like I
00:24:51.600
said I like Clemson University but this is the problem that was created
00:24:55.880
under them and they have to answer for it so if President Clements and and
00:25:01.040
Vice President of Student Affairs Chris Miller are watching I mean this is
00:25:04.400
something that we would like not only as just conservatives but as a student
00:25:08.280
body we do need you know answers for this and we do need a public
00:25:11.800
statement about this at a minimum so that's you know if they're watching I do
00:25:16.640
encourage that to to be done and while this was an unfortunate event I
00:25:21.620
actually think that this can turn into a very positive experience if the
00:25:26.000
reaction to this is thoughtful and thorough and very clear then I
00:25:31.700
actually think Clemson could come out of this looking pretty good if instead
00:25:36.380
this is ignored this is treated as well you know students should just you know
00:25:42.040
respect when anyone else tells them what to do then that is going to
00:25:45.640
metastasize and then those negative consequences that you talk about will
00:25:49.120
will grow more severe unnecessarily I think that that the apology is a is an
00:25:53.600
important thing but I do want to zoom out since I have you here and you've been
00:25:56.920
on the front lines of this fight Joel has as well I would love you to share with
00:26:01.660
our audience what issues you find are animating college Republicans and young
00:26:07.100
conservatives and we see on the broad issue matrix immigration leading the way
00:26:11.260
certainly the price of goods but what are you hearing about from your members and
00:26:15.740
and other folks that that are driving really a lot of generational shift in
00:26:21.440
people under 30 toward more conservative policies and conservative causes well you
00:26:27.040
mentioned immigration and that is the number one issue that I've talked to
00:26:30.200
college Republicans turning point members about and it's it's huge because it's
00:26:35.720
changing the voter demographic rapidly so that's going to affect us down the road
00:26:40.360
we are we going to win elections with this specific issue but also affecting South
00:26:46.060
Carolinians as a whole I-85 runs through Atlanta to Charlotte which also cuts
00:26:50.660
through the upstate of South Carolina which is right where we're placed our
00:26:53.900
universities place and that's where a lot of drugs are ran through a lot of gang
00:26:59.060
activity you know from the border and if we don't shut that down it's going to
00:27:03.900
start it has killed South Carolinians there's fentanyl pouring in as as many
00:27:08.680
other states experience but we have such a big interstate going through the heart
00:27:13.120
of South Carolina that we've busted drugs before and it's all from these Mexican
00:27:17.860
drug cartels and these people are animals and if we don't lock it down then we're
00:27:23.000
going to have no law and order and we're not going to have a voter demographic in
00:27:26.640
this country that represents Americans so that's a huge issue that I think most
00:27:31.040
college students right now are very worried about especially with Lake and Riley
00:27:35.020
that was only a few hundred miles south of us and and that was terrible and for
00:27:39.840
that to happen to a college student on a college campus it does scare a lot of
00:27:43.400
people so it could happen at Clemson University too you just never know so
00:27:47.100
that's that's a huge issue I envision bringing a lot of young people especially
00:27:51.180
conservatives to the polls. Joel what are you seeing in terms of this I mean the
00:27:55.720
under 30 crowd was a core feature of the Democrat coalition under Obama and then
00:28:01.860
initially under Biden and we are seeing a real shift there what issues do you think
00:28:06.740
are driving that? Yeah well I think aside from just from immigration which is
00:28:11.400
obviously a big issue I think the students are starting to to see the bleak
00:28:15.480
future of the economy and jobs in general I think now that their college
00:28:19.640
degrees are being extremely diluted and they're getting this rude awakening that
00:28:23.320
it's becoming very hard to get a job after this promise of going to college for
00:28:27.480
four years has that promise has now been broken to the you know Gen Z
00:28:32.120
generations and they're seeing less money in their wallets and they're that's
00:28:36.480
being reflected from the folks who are who are just entering the job force for the
00:28:41.340
first time so I think some of these these economic experiences under Joe Biden
00:28:45.780
is has definitely created a bleak future in which they are going back to the years
00:28:51.340
of prosperity that we saw under President Trump so I think that's going to be a big
00:28:54.360
factor coming up. Undeniably I think these economic conditions are leading Gen Z to
00:29:00.700
maybe a different place than the younger millennials who stayed living with their
00:29:04.380
parents this new version of Gen Z actually like starts looking at hey I might want to buy a
00:29:09.160
house one day and you won't be able to with these interest rates. Trevor I also
00:29:13.120
wanted to ask you a question about the Palmetto State you know South Carolina gave
00:29:17.000
President Trump this overwhelming victory basically drives Nikki Haley out of the
00:29:21.160
race but what do you see as the as the trends I thought your analysis on the I-85
00:29:25.320
thing was was really good are there other things in South Carolina that that
00:29:30.620
people around the country might want to know about? Yeah so a lot of people would
00:29:35.640
think that South Carolina's ruby red which it is but the the state legislature does not
00:29:41.380
reflect that actually CPAC the American Conservative Union rates South Carolina as the
00:29:47.880
second most liberal Republican super majorities in the country and that's because we have a lot of
00:29:53.540
rhinos in our state legislature that say they're Republican and conservative but they vote a
00:29:59.300
different way or push through these ridiculous bills that are basically ironed out by the
00:30:03.500
chamber of commerce and and they basically dictate a lot of a lot of what happens in South Carolina
00:30:08.700
and so I think there needs to be a big push at creating the Freedom Caucus you know making it
00:30:15.940
larger in South Carolina and states abroad because what we have is just a good old boy system in South
00:30:21.920
Carolina it's been absolutely destroying our state for years and you know it's it's been a lot of
00:30:28.880
watered down bills that could have been way more conservative and I see states like your state
00:30:33.720
congressman Florida that are passing extremely conservative legislation and we can't even get
00:30:39.640
a constitutional carry bill passed and a good pro-life bill passed because of the rhinos in the state
00:30:44.860
legislature so so there's been a big push on our end to get a lot of these people that are actually
00:30:51.080
conservative elected so we're doing a lot of work on our end with with door knocking canvassing like we
00:30:57.540
did this past Saturday to fix that so I encourage people in their own state to try and push for more
00:31:05.160
Freedom Caucus members to join their state legislature with our primary it's June 11th but it could be
00:31:11.480
different in other states so definitely latch on to someone you believe is conservative and run with
00:31:17.760
it because that's how you make a change yeah and I want to ask you this question because it's something
00:31:22.120
I struggle with I get all these candidates from all over the country that you know become very
00:31:26.580
interested in wanting to align with a bill that we've sponsored or you know some some opera you
00:31:32.720
know event or opportunity and when they're running they all kind of sound the same everyone says they're
00:31:39.420
a great champion for liberty everyone says that they don't want forever wars everybody says that
00:31:45.180
they're they don't want the surveillance state that they all they want to cut spending they definitely
00:31:49.460
want to cut spending they're willing to take chances to secure the border and then they get here
00:31:53.800
and at the first sign of criticism or at the first moment where you got to use a little leverage or
00:32:00.780
take a little criticism they're hiding under their desks and so right give me your vetting tools like
00:32:06.260
what when you talk to someone and decide whether or not you're going to go out there and sweat on a
00:32:10.540
Saturday afternoon and and talk to folks on their way into a Clemson football game how do you know
00:32:15.840
they're worth it what are the issues and and what are the tells that that you look for the most
00:32:20.520
obviously we know joel doesn't know how to pick well he's working for me but i'll check with you
00:32:25.640
oh come on don't don't sell yourself short uh but but the big thing is 100 money um so that's fec
00:32:34.040
filings um you know follow the money.org is also a good website that we use to vet candidates because
00:32:40.440
that's who's that's who is going to be reflecting what they believe is is who's giving them money if it's
00:32:46.220
more grassroots people that's who i'm in favor for because that's representing the people of south
00:32:51.020
carolina and abroad um but if they're getting money from big super PACs and and lobbyists like
00:32:56.680
there's a big problem with lawyer legislators in the state um that dictate a lot of stuff and and that's
00:33:02.640
a whole nother issue but so yeah money's a big one also who they're friends with you can use like
00:33:08.860
just social media as a good vetting tool too to see like who are they following who are they who are
00:33:13.600
they interacting with is it establishment people is it rhinos if it is then they're not the candidate
00:33:19.340
for me that's why you know the freedom caucus people they're the more grassroots people they're
00:33:24.120
they're the people getting the money from the people of south carolina therefore i you know i and
00:33:29.400
my club members kind of gravitate towards them more so than anything so money is probably the biggest
00:33:34.180
driver and the relationship aspect is is what i use to vet people that's incredible i was not
00:33:40.360
expecting you to give that answer i thought you would say a particular issue set or a way that
00:33:45.800
somebody made their presentation you you go right to the dollars and cents and frankly that's probably
00:33:51.640
as good a system as any because we see people up here that kowtow to their donors and subjectate the
00:33:57.820
interest of their constituents you got a better vetting strategy joel yeah yeah my mine was a little bit
00:34:02.600
easier uh beforehand it was i really came down to two questions one what did you think of the former
00:34:08.200
disgraced speaker kevin mccarthy into would you say it publicly that's the joel if you're trying to
00:34:13.780
hire joel away from me to run your podcast those are the questions you may have to answer well trevor
00:34:19.120
we wish you and all of your club members uh the best of luck we're going to keep you updated regarding
00:34:23.700
the responses we get from clemson we're sorry you had to do that but actually i think it's a shining
00:34:29.060
example of how to respond with maturity and with grace and with knowledge and my hope is that a lot of
00:34:36.480
different students at clemson and beyond see this that they join your club that they're right there
00:34:41.500
alongside you and that you guys are able to have a great opportunity for for free speech also always
00:34:47.660
thank joel for pulling double duty producing this podcast and uh joining me again as a guest so
00:34:53.120
appreciate you oh before we let you go trevor trevor folks want to follow the activities of the club
00:34:59.000
support the club make a pitch for where they where they could go how they can follow you and find you
00:35:03.940
yeah absolutely so you can follow the clemson college republicans on x at clemson crs or instagram
00:35:11.540
at clemson college rep so that's where you can find us primarily also we do a lot of work with the
00:35:17.560
college republicans of america they're at on x and instagram is u.s college gop so that's where you can
00:35:24.220
find us there's so much going on in the conservative space for young people on college campuses so
00:35:29.540
definitely uh we'll keep you posted on stuff on our end uh because i don't envision this being the
00:35:34.740
only time we are involved in controversy well i i hope the next time we have you on it's to talk
00:35:40.920
about your great insights about the shape of the electorate and the issues motivating people and less
00:35:45.540
because you're being harassed but thanks so much for being with us roll the credits
