00:00:00.000 You ever watch this guy on television?
00:00:03.780 You all were not telling the truth, and you should not be trusted.
00:00:06.540 Congressman Matt Gaetz, thank you for what you did for your country tonight.
00:00:09.280 Be offended with the Democratic whip, not House Republicans.
00:00:12.240 Like a machine, Matt Gaetz.
00:00:16.360 Welcome to Hot Takes. I'm Congressman Matt Gaetz.
00:00:19.480 Let's talk about the news.
00:00:21.160 And the news in the House Judiciary Committee is biased against conservatives.
00:00:26.400 Here's Jim Jordan making the case.
00:00:27.840 I'll just cut to the chase. Big tech's out to get conservatives.
00:00:31.040 That's not a suspicion. That's not a hunch. That's a fact.
00:00:34.460 July 20th, 2020, Google removes the homepages of Breitbart and the Daily Caller.
00:00:39.400 Just last night, we learned Google has censored Breitbart so much, traffic has declined 99%.
00:00:43.540 June 16th, 2020, Google threatens to demonetize and ban the Federalists.
00:00:47.860 April 19th, 2020, Google and YouTube announce a policy censoring the content
00:00:54.280 that conflicts with recommendations of the World Health Organization.
00:00:59.280 Now, think about that.
00:01:00.580 The World Health Organization, the organization that lied to us, the organization that shilled for China.
00:01:05.240 And if you contradict something they say, they can say whatever they want.
00:01:08.700 They can lie for China. They can shill for China.
00:01:10.700 You say something against them, you get censored.
00:01:13.500 June 29th, 2020, Amazon bans President Trump's account on Twitch after he raises concerns about defunding the police.
00:01:22.120 June 4th, 2020, Amazon bans a book critical of the coronavirus lockdowns written by a conservative commentator.
00:01:27.700 May 27th, 2020, Amazon Smile won't let you give to the Family Research Council and the Alliance Defense Fund,
00:01:34.840 but you can give to Planned Parenthood.
00:01:36.540 Facebook, June 19th, 2020, takes down posts from President Trump's re-election campaign.
00:01:43.300 November 1st, 2018, Facebook silences a pro-life organization's advertisement.
00:01:48.520 May 19th, 2016, Facebook, former Facebook employees admit Facebook routinely suppresses conservative views.
00:01:56.360 We saw more interesting exchanges during the House Judiciary Committee hearing with tech CEOs.
00:02:02.560 Here's some of that hearing.
00:02:03.720 Our goal is to offer a platform for all ideas.
00:02:08.900 We want to give everyone in the world a voice to share their experiences and ideas.
00:02:15.600 A lot of that is day-to-day things that happen in their lives.
00:02:18.440 Some of it is political.
00:02:21.040 And frankly, I think that we've distinguished ourselves as one of the companies that defends free expression the most.
00:02:28.500 The staff warned the Senate Armed Forces Committee that the Chinese military was directly benefiting from Google's work.
00:02:36.420 It made me wonder what values Google and Communist Red China had in common.
00:02:42.000 I asked myself, self, is it that the Chinese Communist Party imprisons Uyghur Muslims in concentration camps?
00:02:49.600 Like it is shown on the chart behind me.
00:02:55.340 Could it be that China forces slaves to work in sweatshops?
00:02:59.200 Maybe they align on the design to suppress free speech in Hong Kong.
00:03:03.600 Did Google agree with CCP's decision to lie to the world about the COVID-19 pandemic?
00:03:09.060 The power these companies have to impact what happens during an election, what people, what American citizens get to see prior to their voting is pretty darn important.
00:03:20.280 That's why this committee hearing is important.
00:03:21.860 Look, we all think the free market's great.
00:03:24.220 We think competition's great.
00:03:25.560 We love the fact that these are American companies.
00:03:27.280 But what's not great is censoring people, censoring conservatives and trying to impact elections.
00:03:31.380 I had questions for Google's Sundar Pichai.
00:03:34.800 He's the CEO regarding their interactions with China, regarding their potential bias against U.S. police.
00:03:42.320 Take a listen to our exchange.
00:03:43.480 Mr. Zuckerberg, in his written testimony, made the claim that Facebook is an American company with American values.
00:03:50.540 Do any of the rest of you take a different view?
00:03:52.980 That is to say that your companies don't embrace American values.
00:03:57.580 It's great to see that none of you do.
00:03:59.460 Mr. Pichai, I'm worried about Google's market power, how it concentrates that power, and then ultimately how it wields it.
00:04:07.440 Project Maven was a collaboration between Google and the Department of Defense that Google pulled out of, citing ethical concerns.
00:04:15.880 And you made the decision to pull out of that joint venture following receipt of a letter from thousands of your employees saying that Google should not be in the business of war.
00:04:24.480 My question, Mr. Pichai, is did you weigh the input from your employees when making the decision to abandon that project with the United States military?
00:04:35.240 Congressman, thanks for your concern.
00:04:37.360 As I said earlier, we're deeply committed to supporting the military and the U.S. government.
00:04:42.540 We have undertaken several projects since then.
00:04:45.240 We do take our employees' input into account, but it's one input.
00:04:48.700 We make decisions based on a variety of factors.
00:04:52.240 As a company, we were new in the cloud space at that time.
00:04:57.020 Since then, we have not shared.
00:04:57.680 Thank you.
00:04:58.280 That's a sufficient answer that you did take their feedback into account.
00:05:02.760 In fact, some of your Googlers have recently sent you a letter where they've asked you to exit other partnerships as a consequence of ethical concerns.
00:05:10.800 They've asked you to stop doing business with American law enforcement saying that police broadly uphold white supremacy and that Google should not be engaged in any services to police.
00:05:23.660 And as you well know, you provide some of the most basic services to police, like email, but you also provide services that help keep our cops safe when they're doing their job.
00:05:33.680 And so my question is here in front of Congress and the American people, will you take the pledge that Google will not adopt the bigoted anti-police policy that is requested in the most recent letter?
00:05:45.400 Congressman, we have a long track record of working with law enforcement when it is supported by due process and the law.
00:05:57.080 We push back against overbroad requests.
00:05:59.720 We are transparent about the requests we get, but we have a long history of following the law and cooperating with law enforcement.
00:06:07.440 I understand the history.
00:06:08.560 I'm asking about the future.
00:06:09.660 To the law enforcement that are watching today, can they rest assured that under your leadership, Google will not adopt these bigoted anti-police policies?
00:06:19.960 Congressman, we are committed to continuing to work with law enforcement in a way that's consistent with law and due processes in the U.S.
00:06:28.220 Well, I greatly appreciate that, and I know that will be very comforting to the police who utilize your services.
00:06:34.220 You mentioned earlier in the discussion about China that your engagement in China was very limited, but yet Google has an AI China Center.
00:06:45.320 The Chinese Academy of Sciences has published a paper that enhanced the targeting capabilities of China's J-20 fighter aircraft.
00:06:55.180 You collaborate with Chinese universities that take millions upon millions of dollars from the Chinese military.
00:07:01.200 Matter of fact, one of your Googlers, Fifi Lee, while under your employ, was cited in Chinese state media saying,
00:07:09.300 China is like a sleeping giant.
00:07:11.440 When she wakes, she will tremble the world.
00:07:14.420 The former Secretary of Defense, Mr. Shanahan, said that the lines have been blurred in China between commercial and military application.
00:07:22.300 And as Mr. Buck cited, General Dunford says that your company is directly aiding the Chinese military.
00:07:29.860 And Peter Thiel, who actually serves on Mr. Zuckerberg's board at Facebook, said that Google's activities with China are treasonous.
00:07:38.540 He accused you of treason.
00:07:40.260 So why would an American company with American values so directly aid the Chinese military but have ethical concerns about working alongside the U.S. military on Project Maven?
00:07:54.520 And I understand your point about cybersecurity and those things, but Project Maven was a specific way to ensure that our troops are safe on the battlefield.
00:08:02.880 And if you have no problem making the J-20 Chinese fighter more effective in its targeting, why wouldn't you want to make America as effective?
00:08:13.420 Congressman, with respect, we are not working with the Chinese military.
00:08:18.340 It's absolutely false.
00:08:19.280 I had a chance to meet with General Dunford personally.
00:08:22.480 We have clarified what we do in China compared to our peers.
00:08:26.400 It's very, very limited in nature.
00:08:28.880 Our AI work in China is limited to a handful of people working on open source projects.
00:08:34.120 I'm happy to share and engage with the office to explain our work in China further.
00:08:38.940 Gosh, I mean, when the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says that an American company is directly aiding China,
00:08:45.300 when you have an AI center, when you're working with universities, and when your employees are talking about China trembling the world,
00:08:51.760 it seems to really call into question your commitment to our country and our values.
00:08:58.820 They want a ceasefire in Portland.
00:09:01.760 Apparently, according to the mayor, the post-millennial has the story from Sam Edwards.
00:09:08.240 Witless Portland mayor tries to call a ceasefire with America.
00:09:12.280 And look, the situation in Portland is bad.
00:09:15.180 We heard from the attorney general in the Judiciary Committee yesterday regarding the extent of the violence,
00:09:21.900 the depravity, the consistency of the attacks on federal property.
00:09:26.400 And the mayor apparently wants a ceasefire.
00:09:29.920 I think this was the same mayor that said that he didn't want President Trump to send federal assets in to protect our federal property.
00:09:39.100 Well, that's not how it works, Mr. Mayor.
00:09:41.500 And another thing, for everyone out there who's been saying, oh, these are peaceful protests.
00:09:46.680 You don't need a ceasefire with peaceful protests.
00:09:50.660 So pretty crazy stuff going on in Portland.
00:09:53.880 If a ceasefire is necessary, that probably means that the endeavor that the opponent was engaged in was not entirely peaceful.
00:10:03.980 So we hope that there's peace in Portland.
00:10:06.500 I doubt the mayor will be the one to bring it.
00:10:11.500 Okay, Boomer, we're going to socialize you.
00:10:15.120 That's what Andres Kuth writes for Bloomberg Opinion.
00:10:19.380 And this is an important piece, not so much in that I agree with the call to action for millennials and Gen Z to socialize our economy and our country,
00:10:30.660 but because it really is a warning regarding some of the dynamics that young people feel.
00:10:36.180 The piece goes all the way back to the 2008 financial crisis.
00:10:40.300 I remember being a young lawyer at that time, getting out, being in the job market,
00:10:44.900 and a lot of different young people felt the wage scars of a contracting economy that we had in 2008.
00:10:53.540 And even beyond, as wages were not rising, as capital investment was leaving as a consequence of Obama-era policies,
00:11:02.460 there were real negative consequences for young people in the job market.
00:11:06.020 And that's meant fewer have gotten married, had children, saved money, made down payments.
00:11:11.920 And the argument that's being made in this Bloomberg piece is that young people see boomers as consumers and themselves as the producers.
00:11:23.240 And for the system to be more equitable, in the opinion of this particular piece,
00:11:29.700 they want health care to be universal, income to be universal, pensions to be reformed, and taxes to be simplified.
00:11:37.380 So if we do not, as conservatives, seize on the elements of these inequities to, in fact, simplify the tax code,
00:11:46.620 to, in fact, create opportunity for not just millennials, who are oftentimes in their mid-30s now,
00:11:53.020 but for this Gen Z, that we could see greater calls for the type of socialism offered by Bernie and even Andrew Yang.
00:12:00.980 And so it's my hope that we could continue to make the case for opportunity and prosperity and markets.
00:12:08.300 But with all of the challenges that millennials and Zoomers have gone through,
00:12:14.200 you are starting to see the call for socialism become more explicit, more frequent, and thus more dangerous.
00:12:22.200 And that's why we have to confront those dangerous ideas with, I think, a great deal of patriotism
00:12:29.660 and reflection on why America is great, because we produce things, because we incentivize innovation,
00:12:37.000 because if you work hard, you can see rising wages and more opportunity.
00:12:41.780 That's precisely the renewed America we saw before the coronavirus, and I can't wait to get back to it.
00:12:47.720 A lot has been made of Bill Barr's testimony before the Judiciary Committee,
00:12:55.860 and I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on one element of my questioning to him,
00:13:00.480 and that's the risk that this Antifa-inspired violence, that this anarchy will spread beyond just these totally leftist cities on the West Coast,
00:13:11.960 but into middle America, into places like my district, if they were to organize and to cause harm to federal property or to people in federal buildings.
00:13:21.980 Here's what the attorney general said about the risk of spreading violence.
00:13:26.420 We are concerned about this problem metastasizing around the country, and so we feel that we have to,
00:13:35.340 in a place like Portland, even where we don't have the support of the state, the local government,
00:13:41.800 we have to take a stand and defend this federal property.
00:13:45.840 We can't get to a level where we're going to accept these kinds of violent attacks on federal courts.
00:13:51.260 And if you did what my Democrat colleagues were asking, if you merely abandoned that federal property,
00:13:57.560 allowed it to be overrun, allowed the people inside to be harmed,
00:14:01.180 is it your view then that Antifa and other violent people engaged in these acts would simply stop,
00:14:07.660 would simply accept that as their sole victory, or is it your expert opinion,
00:14:11.800 having dealt with a number of law enforcement and criminal cases in your legal career,
00:14:15.880 that they wouldn't stop, that they would go to the next town, to the next community,
00:14:19.940 and potentially inspire more violence?
00:14:21.780 There's no doubt in my mind that it would spread.
00:14:24.940 And what comfort can you give Americans in my district and around the country
00:14:29.540 that you will stop this, that you will stop the burning and destruction of federal property,
00:14:34.800 and that you will give confidence to regular Americans that they can go out in the streets
00:14:39.780 without the risk of this terrorism?
00:14:41.460 Well, as you can see, in Portland, we have a relatively small number of federal officers
00:14:48.940 who have been withstanding this for almost two months.
00:14:52.180 It's a great strain, but we cannot just stand aside and allow the federal court to be destroyed.
00:14:59.700 Does Joe Biden have squad problems?
00:15:03.600 The Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib from the Detroit area electing not to endorse Joe Biden.
00:15:10.160 And John Solomon has the story at justthenews.com,
00:15:13.960 and it chronicles the challenging primary that Rashida Tlaib has from the head of the Detroit City Council,
00:15:22.180 someone who she, I guess, was in a close primary against previously,
00:15:25.940 who's running again, who believes that Rashida Tlaib's activity with the squad
00:15:31.300 is replacing her service to her Detroit area district.
00:15:34.840 But Rashida Tlaib taking the position publicly that she doesn't have to be for Joe Biden
00:15:40.360 to be against Donald Trump, and that she's just telling people to be against Trump as their leading motivator,
00:15:47.680 but no endorsement for Biden.
00:15:49.640 I think this is really a microcosm for the problem the Biden campaign has.
00:15:54.160 No one's really for it.
00:15:55.640 I mean, I guess there are people who are motivated by whatever Trump derangement syndrome
00:16:02.620 tends to afflict them at the moment.
00:16:04.340 But it's not as if Biden himself has presented vision for a compelling candidacy.
00:16:11.200 And it's evident that some of the most famous Democrats in Congress still don't want to endorse him,
00:16:17.060 still not inspired by his leadership, still wondering when he'll get out of the basement, I guess.
00:16:21.560 If you need a feel-good story today, know that there is a dog named Sundrop,
00:16:31.100 who, along with his 35-year-old owner, traveled the neighborhoods of New York City hunting rats.
00:16:38.780 That's right, and according to the Wall Street Journal's Stephanie Yang,
00:16:42.700 the service is more in need now as a result of coronavirus lockdown.
00:16:47.400 Yes, even the rat population affected by the bat virus.
00:16:52.320 With fewer people out and about moving around,
00:16:54.900 the rats have felt apparently more free to roam the streets.
00:16:59.020 And with increased challenges on local government budgets,
00:17:03.120 you've seen some garbage pickup delayed or deferred to other days,
00:17:07.500 meaning that the rats have more to eat.
00:17:09.500 So an emboldened rat population has been good business for Sundrop and his owners.
00:17:15.040 The Wall Street Journal, bringing you the stories that matter.
00:17:18.380 Go get them, Sundrop. I'm on your side, not the rats.
00:17:22.400 Thanks so much for listening to Hot Takes.
