Welcome to Hot Takes. I'm Congressman Matt Gaetz. Let's talk about the news.
00:00:20.840
And the news is that the big tech tyranny that I've been warning about on this podcast that we've
00:00:27.000
held hearings about in the Congress is playing out before our very eyes and the U.S. Department
00:00:32.860
of Justice is not doing enough to stop it. Facebook and Twitter have now removed the content
00:00:39.780
of President Trump talking about students and illness and transmission rates. And by the way,
00:00:46.020
a lot of what President Trump is saying has been said by others in the medical field, but you
00:00:51.200
wouldn't believe that if you tried to buy a book about it on Amazon. A lot of them have been banned.
00:00:57.000
If you tried to get that content on social media platforms where they're choosing to
00:01:02.040
be the arbiters of truth. I mean, what would have happened in the days of Galileo if some
00:01:08.820
technology company had the ability to silence his commentary on the nature of the world and
00:01:15.940
how mass functions and how the skies and the universe operate? No, we do not need our tech
00:01:23.660
overlords telling us what's true or false. That takes too low a view of Americans. We're inquisitive
00:01:30.980
people. We look at different pieces of information. We synthesize it. We check sourcing. We develop
00:01:37.860
doctrine. We test that doctrine. We utilize the scientific method. But that's just not enough
00:01:44.140
for Facebook and Twitter. They want to be the truth police. Why is the Department of Justice
00:01:50.180
Justice? Not in a federal court right now seeking injunctions, mandatory injunctions against Facebook
00:01:57.120
and Twitter for trying to silence our president. This is all a dry run for the weeks leading up to the
00:02:03.640
2020 presidential campaign. And it's going to get worse because as they see the president work to ignite our
00:02:10.680
movement digitally because we're limited on our rallies and ability to convene, you are going to see the tech
00:02:17.220
overlords really ratchet down the ability for us to communicate, shift perspectives on the messages
00:02:25.240
being shared by the president and his supporters, and then at times just outright label and ban the
00:02:31.040
content. It is a weak response from the Department of Justice not to be more litigious in the face of
00:02:39.280
these assaults on our speech and these assaults on our democracy. We need the Attorney General and the
00:02:46.260
Department of Justice to do more, to protect the marketplace of ideas, to protect the public square, get on the
00:02:53.320
stick, get in court, get an injunction. We have to send a message that Twitter and Facebook and the other
00:03:00.200
technology companies do not define truth in the United States of America. Welcome to Congress, Cori Bush. That's
00:03:12.580
what we'll be saying soon as a result of a massive update in a primary election on the Democratic side
00:03:19.960
where Lacey Clay loses the primary to Black Lives Matter activist Cori Bush. This was one of the
00:03:28.240
campaigns in the 2018 election cycle featured in Bringing Down the House, the documentary that
00:03:35.560
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was in. And hey, you know, maybe these documentaries help you win elections
00:03:41.480
because Cori Bush did not prevail in that 2018 race. Lacey Clay thumped her pretty good. And she
00:03:49.440
has now unseated him as a guy who, I don't know, inherited the seat basically from his father. I
00:03:56.000
mean, a Clay has served this district in Congress for like 50 years, Lacey Clay's father before him,
00:04:02.400
and now it'll be Cori Bush. So it's not just like the old white guys that the Democrats are
00:04:07.740
taking out in these primaries. Lacey Clay, a prominent member of the Congressional Black
00:04:12.660
Caucus, losing a primary may be a sign of more things to come for the Democrat establishment.
00:04:22.980
CNBC's Arun Karpal is closely monitoring the Chinese reaction to President Trump's correct
00:04:29.560
decision to end the Chinese ownership of TikTok in our country. Take a listen to his report.
00:04:35.380
It's just worth remembering how we got here. Of course, TikTok owned by Beijing-based ByteDance.
00:04:40.800
The U.S. government has said it's concerned about data collection practices, the potential
00:04:44.740
for TikTok to send that data back to China and perhaps into the hands of the Chinese government,
00:04:49.600
something that TikTok has denied on numerous occasions. But there are a lot of questions
00:04:53.980
that still remain unanswered. How will Microsoft potentially buy part of the TikTok business?
00:04:59.920
Who will run it at Microsoft? And of course, how much will Microsoft pay?
00:05:05.120
We'll be keeping an eye on how those questions pan out over the coming weeks. Of course,
00:05:09.000
there has been some reaction here in China, actually, from state media. A couple of publications
00:05:14.240
have amounted this bid by Microsoft for TikTok to theft. They said it's a smash and grab by the U.S.
00:05:22.520
here and said that China may respond and has many ways to respond to such a thing, perhaps a veiled threat
00:05:29.740
of retaliation here. No specifics on what that might look like, but we'll be keeping an eye on what
00:05:35.260
progresses on that front. A country engaged in theft. No, that's not China. That's what China's
00:05:40.860
calling us. And I would suggest maybe it would be appropriate for them to check their glass house
00:05:46.880
before throwing too many stones. It appears as though Microsoft may ultimately be the purchaser
00:05:52.200
of TikTok, but Microsoft's got their own problems. I think it's a reasonable question to ask why
00:05:57.740
Microsoft is developing their R&D labs in China. Don't they know China steals? Or is Microsoft
00:06:06.520
somehow benefiting off of a relationship with China? Are they motivated by China? Are they influenced by
00:06:12.980
China? I mean, if China is functionally their landlord for their R&D center, maybe they're not the
00:06:19.020
right ones to be purchasing TikTok. I guess it's better than literally the CCP itself having an
00:06:25.700
intelligence collection tool in the homes of any American, particularly Americans with young people
00:06:31.700
in them. So it's improvement. But I think that we need a whole of country approach to redomesticating
00:06:40.620
research, development, artificial intelligence, machine learning. We need to get that mess out of
00:06:46.380
China. China is not our friend. To put America first and to put the American people first,
00:06:52.420
we need to ask not what our country can do for our tech companies, but what our tech companies can do
00:06:58.360
for our country. The political conventions for both Republicans and Democrats are right around the
00:07:07.360
corner. These conventions historically give campaigns and parties the opportunity to share a little bit
00:07:13.760
about the story of their candidates, the sharpening of their message, gives them chances to try out
00:07:20.440
different lines, different themes, different surrogates. And conventions have largely been the
00:07:26.120
time when stars have been born. Bill Clinton gave a great convention speech, catapulted him to the
00:07:32.060
nomination. Barack Obama gave a great convention speech. You know, regardless of your view of his
00:07:38.180
politics, it was splendid oratory. And that resulted in him gaining some national acclaim to allow him
00:07:45.120
to seek the nomination in 2008. And it's going to be different this time with largely digital events.
00:07:51.880
And I don't know if they'll have the same impact or if it'll sort of just feel like another Zoom meeting.
00:07:58.220
But the president seems excited. He said yesterday when asked, well, who would be some of the folks
00:08:03.220
speaking at the convention? He said his warriors in Congress and specifically named Jim Jordan and Matt
00:08:10.060
Gates. We're going to do some live speeches from different locations. And I'm going to do mine on
00:08:15.440
Thursday night. And that'll be a live. First lady's making a speech. Numerous people are making
00:08:20.460
speeches. Senators, a lot of very, very terrific people have a terrific speaker, really a terrific
00:08:26.280
speakers list. Some of the warrior congressmen that you've watched, Jim Jordan and
00:08:30.700
so many others, Matt Gates. We have these guys who are warriors fighting against just a horrible
00:08:38.720
force that hopefully will get their act together. We're going to have some great, great people
00:08:44.860
making speeches. And I'll probably do mine live from the White House. I'm honored to be on the
00:08:49.640
president's mind as one of the folks who could go out there and deliver a strong speech. I am inspired
00:08:55.300
by this president and his policies. I am so encouraged that he built the greatest economy
00:09:01.000
that the world has ever known before coronavirus. And we're going to do it again. And so if I'm asked
00:09:06.720
to deliver remarks, gosh, I'd just be so excited to do so. And it would be an honor. And I know Jim
00:09:14.000
Jordan feels the same way. Where will the president deliver his remarks? There's reporting out that he may
00:09:19.440
be considering the White House. And oh, my gosh, that got the left totally triggered Hatch Act
00:09:24.920
violations. Remember back when they were going to, like, throw Kellyanne Conway in jail for the Hatch
00:09:30.020
Act? The Hatch Act is like the Logan Act, you know, something that is frequently talked about,
00:09:35.760
rarely enforced, particularly when you're dealing with these senior government officials who are asked
00:09:42.260
every day about the mingling of policy and politics. I mean, heck, just take this podcast,
00:09:47.900
for example. You know, as I share my perspective on issues before the Congress and the country and
00:09:54.780
the culture, of course, there's a political tinge and implication to the way I might frame something
00:10:01.380
or the way that a conflict may be resolved before the voters. I mean, ultimately, that's what
00:10:06.380
democracy is all about. So I'd have no problem if the president chose the White House as a venue.
00:10:12.000
I'd have no problem if he chose a different venue. I just hope I get the chance to lend my voice
00:10:17.220
to the re-election of the most transformational president, certainly of my lifetime, and someone
00:10:22.520
who I know can implement the economic policies that can restore our great nation to her true promise.
00:10:32.300
I guess being a YouTube star doesn't allow you to evade justice when you loot or riot or steal.
00:10:40.340
Jake Paul is a name I had never heard before today, but apparently he's some sort of YouTube star and
00:10:46.220
has been arrested as a consequence of a May 2020 event at the Scottsdale Fashion Mall. I guess Jake
00:10:54.280
Paul was in some legal trouble for that incident with local authorities. Those were dismissed,
00:11:01.400
it seems, in lieu of a federal arrest and likely prosecution for his involvement in that unlawful
00:11:10.140
behavior. Good. I don't think that people should be able to destroy and steal and bring harm to their
00:11:17.980
fellow Americans and then throw their hands up in the air and say, oh, well, you know, I'm a celebrity
00:11:23.160
engaged in a political movement. It's not a political movement when you're engaged in a crime.
00:11:29.020
Here, these crimes need to be, I think, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,
00:11:33.840
and it looks like Jake Paul is on the receiving end of that justice today.
00:11:43.000
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts is a disappointment to conservatives.
00:11:48.900
That's the commentary from Vice President Mike Pence in an interview on CBN. Take a listen.
00:11:54.400
Are you scratching your head a little bit on John Roberts? I mean, I'm not, we're not going to call
00:11:58.220
him David Souter at this point, but conservatives have had a track record of having some problems
00:12:02.580
with Supreme Court justices. You thought we're going to be a reliable vote, or at least when I
00:12:06.560
say a reliable vote, I'm just talking about, you know, to adhere to conservative principles.
00:12:10.700
Look, we have great respect for the institution of the Supreme Court of the United States,
00:12:15.600
but Chief Justice John Roberts has been a disappointment to conservatives, whether it be
00:12:19.900
the Obamacare decision or whether it be a spate of recent divisions all the way through
00:12:25.280
Calvary Chapel. It's just, it's a reminder, and I think several cases out of the Supreme Court
00:12:31.600
are a reminder of just how important this election is for the future of the Supreme Court.
00:12:37.400
Vice President Pence is saying what a lot of conservatives are feeling. We heard those
00:12:41.700
sentiments also expressed by Senator Josh Hawley on the floor of the Senate. Here was his remarks.
00:12:47.200
There are now five Republican appointed justices on the court. And actually, Republicans have
00:12:53.680
appointed 11 out of the last 15 justices to the bench. But is this the conservative court
00:13:01.960
that we have worked for? More to the point, is this a constitutionalist court? The only thing I can
00:13:09.480
say for certain when looking at the results of this last term is that, in the words of the late
00:13:13.680
Justice Scalia, the imperial judiciary lives. This is a court that freely rewrites congressional
00:13:20.600
statutes, that has protected the worst left-wing precedents of earlier years, that in the final
00:13:27.420
week of its term gave away half the state of Oklahoma. For those who consider themselves
00:13:33.280
constitutional conservatives, these decisions are a clarion call to wake up and to acknowledge what is
00:13:41.120
staring us in the face. Judicial imperialism is alive and well. It is marching on undaunted.
00:13:49.200
And for religious conservatives, well, these decisions are a call to action. Now is the time for us
00:13:56.600
to be heard. And while I agree with Senator Hawley and Vice President Pence that we have not seen these
00:14:03.580
cases resolved to our liking in every circumstance with every holding, why are they holding back on
00:14:09.960
President George W. Bush? I think that, in particular, Vice President Pence had the opportunity to lay
00:14:16.680
the lumber down on the Bush selection process. I mean, first, Bush tried to pick Harriet Myers. That was a
00:14:23.220
disaster. She couldn't get past, like, her first few meetings with senators. And now that we've seen these
00:14:30.160
decisions from Chief Justice Roberts, you have to wonder, like, what was the vetting process? And do we need a
00:14:36.020
better vetting process? For quite some time now, conservative executives, presidents, governors have
00:14:44.180
relied on the Federalist Society to screen candidates, develop talent. Well, you know what? It was the
00:14:50.440
Federalist Society that gave us Rod Rosenstein, of all people. So maybe they don't bat a thousand. And it was the
00:14:58.620
Federalist Society's former founder, Stephen Calabrese, who recently said, oh, Trump should be impeached for making an
00:15:05.700
argument about the extent to which mail-in ballots can affect the date upon which we have the resolution
00:15:10.620
of an election. So maybe we don't trust the Federalist Society to just be the whole cloth, outsourced element
00:15:18.940
of screening these potential judicial candidates and candidates for other major jobs in the Department
00:15:25.020
of Justice. John Roberts has let us down. George W. Bush let us down by picking him. Let's make sure we win
00:15:32.660
this election and do better. I had the chance to be on Jeff Poor's radio show, piping out of Mobile and
00:15:42.800
Pensacola media markets. Take a listen to our discussion.
00:15:45.780
Sally Yates' testimony yesterday seemed to have thrown Jim Comey under the bus with the whole Russia
00:15:51.120
investigation and the origins of it. What's your takeaway from that Senate Judiciary Committee hearing
00:15:57.520
yesterday? We know what happened. We know that the Susan Rice, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Jim Comey crowd
00:16:06.360
was all assembled and that they were going to use Comey as the inside man in the Trump government
00:16:11.980
to try to bring down the duly elected president. And I think that they were so embarrassed at their own
00:16:18.320
foreign policy failures with Russia, at their own political failures with Hillary, that they were using
00:16:25.080
this to justify their own, you know, bad outcomes. And so I'm a little just, you know, I'm sort of sick of the
00:16:33.520
hearings for the sake of hearings, Jeff. I mean, when I go around my district and beautiful deaths in Florida,
00:16:39.300
people ask me, when are these people going to jail? I mean, when is there going to be some accountability?
00:16:44.500
Attorney General Barr has been telling us about this Durham investigation for more than a year. I mean, in five months,
00:16:51.000
you know, Robert Mueller was flinging out subpoenas and indictments and rocking and rolling. And here the Durham
00:16:57.600
investigation appears to be in, like, you know, in fourth year. I mean, so let's let's get this thing up and rolling.
00:17:04.200
And my hope is that we will see the indictments that will vindicate justice.
00:17:09.440
Thanks so much for listening to Hot Takes. I'm Congressman Matt Gaetz.
00:17:13.000
Tune in tomorrow. I'll be back with more Hot Takes.
