00:00:00.000 Welcome to Hot Takes. I'm Congressman Matt Gaetz. Let's talk about the news.
00:00:20.500 The news that seems to be on everyone's mind is the current negotiation in the Congress for
00:00:27.020 a potential additional stimulus as a consequence of coronavirus. Here's the latest on the negotiations.
00:00:33.720 President Trump says House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer
00:00:38.640 want to discuss coronavirus relief again. Taking to Twitter Monday, the president was
00:00:44.520 critical of leading Democrats, citing previous negotiations with the White House, saying
00:00:49.840 they are, quote, hardliners. President Trump signed a coronavirus relief executive order
00:00:55.500 Saturday as negotiations between the Democrats and administration collapsed. According to
00:01:01.740 President Trump Sunday, Pelosi and Schumer are holding the relief hostage for their partisan
00:01:06.700 demands. I hear that's what the Democrats want to do now. They want to look. They were not
00:01:12.140 interested in doing what they had to do. Their big point of discussion was bailouts. They wanted to
00:01:18.580 bail out poorly run Democrat states. Like, you know, I could name them. I could give them to you right
00:01:24.920 now. But why do it? Because, you know, the same states as I do and cities. And we don't we're not
00:01:31.240 going to do that. We'll help. But we're not going to do numbers. They talked about a number of a trillion
00:01:35.900 dollars. We can't do that. President Trump addressed what the administration was doing to ensure that
00:01:41.540 the executive orders he issued on eviction protection, on student loan interest abeyance,
00:01:48.160 on additional unemployment assistance are carried out to the fullest extent. Take a listen to the
00:01:53.820 president. We are going to be doing something very, very interesting with all of the things that we
00:02:00.300 announced on Saturday. I don't have to repeat what they are. You know very well. And we've had
00:02:04.860 we've had some tremendous success already. If you look at what's happening with the stock market and
00:02:10.020 people are very thrilled at what we're doing. We'd like to get the Democrats to focus on other than
00:02:16.880 what they're focusing on, which is a bailout of poorly running states. We have many great running
00:02:23.000 states, states that are setting records. And let's see what happens with respect to that. But the
00:02:29.760 we're looking at also considering a capital gains tax cut, which would create a lot more jobs. So we're
00:02:36.960 looking very seriously at a capital gains tax cut and also at an income tax cut for middle income
00:02:46.620 families. We're looking at expanding the tax cuts that we've already done, but specifically for middle
00:02:53.500 income families. And you'll be hearing about that in the upcoming few weeks. And I think it'll be very
00:02:59.100 exciting. Perhaps one of the strangest things that happened in the last 24 hours was the shooting
00:03:04.340 outside the White House. That was actually an interruption to the remarks you just heard
00:03:09.160 by the president. Here was the president addressing that shooting and the engagement by the Secret
00:03:13.900 Service. There was a shooting outside of the White House and seems to be very well under control. I'd like
00:03:20.820 to thank the Secret Service for doing their always quick and very effective work. But there was an actual
00:03:30.360 shooting and somebody's been taken to the hospital. I don't know the condition of the person. It seems
00:03:38.640 that the person was was shot by Secret Service. And so we thank the Secret Service for their brave effort. We
00:03:47.040 certainly hope that whatever motivates people to their politics, that it's not violence, no matter what
00:03:52.980 side you're on. And we will learn more and keep folks updated. Another police involved shooting another day of
00:04:03.360 riots in Chicago. Take a listen to circumstances on the ground. A mob of looters tearing apart Chicago's
00:04:11.240 famed Magnificent Mile. Oh, the police got their hands full tonight, don't they? Breaking into dozens of
00:04:17.120 businesses taking off with stolen merchandise. Fire, can I get another shit over here? Some 400 Chicago
00:04:23.780 police officers are struggling to contain the scene, which erupted around midnight. Smaller businesses and
00:04:29.780 even grocery stores targeted too. This is where we live. This is our home. This is our front yard. And it's
00:04:36.300 upsetting. The riots, police say, stemming from a police involved shooting Sunday.
00:04:42.240 Authorities say a 20 year old suspect who allegedly fired at police was shot and injured. False
00:04:47.640 information about that shooting, investigators say spreading on social media, fueling the melee.
00:04:53.220 While I recognize the need for us to always be working to improve policing, to always ensure that our
00:05:00.520 communities are kept safe and that law enforcement is equipped with the tools and capability to do
00:05:06.300 that without unnecessary escalation. Sometimes the police do have to use deadly force. And that's not a
00:05:13.140 judgment on any particular case. But we cannot live in a country where every time there is deadly force used by the
00:05:21.140 police, we're going to have our cities burned down, our places of business destroyed, our commerce interrupted, our way of
00:05:27.980 life shattered, the inability to drive around on our streets or know that our families are safe when we send them out on
00:05:35.060 recreational or leisure or business activities. There's just no way for a serious country to operate. And so, you
00:05:41.900 know, I am increasingly troubled by these negative interactions that I continue to see with law
00:05:49.400 enforcement and people who are just increasingly combative with law enforcement. And that's not a
00:05:55.620 commentary on race. That's not a commentary on any particular subdivision or community. But just
00:06:02.460 yesterday, I'm walking through a major airport and someone was in trouble in the TSA line and security. And
00:06:11.300 there was just this whole blow up with the police sheriff deputy who showed up to ensure that this person was like, not even
00:06:21.620 arrested, but just that they were not creating an unsafe environment for other passengers. And it was like
00:06:28.460 the individual just, you know, ranting and raving almost wanted to be arrested, because they thought that, you
00:06:34.460 know, this could create a viral moment for them or a potential lawsuit. And so I think we need to get away from the
00:06:40.580 incentives to be combative and destructive, and try to find better ways to be cooperative. And I think that that is
00:06:48.420 something that requires participation on both sides. You know, we cannot just say that these circumstances are all
00:06:56.420 solely a consequence of bad law enforcement. I think in some cases, you do have deadly use of force, you do have
00:07:03.740 intense use of force as a consequence of conduct that should be avoided, not just by the law enforcement
00:07:10.940 officer, but by the citizen interacting with that law enforcement officer. So here's hoping for less of sort of what I
00:07:18.260 saw in the airport, and more of a peaceful and collectively understanding environment for us to all live in.
00:07:30.180 The Big Ten offers a big no, to the prospect of having college football this season, not allowing their
00:07:37.380 teams to present a league schedule and a bridge schedule anything like you're seeing from some of the other
00:07:43.380 conferences. And wow, was there a negative reaction on Twitter, you had some Ohio State players
00:07:49.380 suggesting that maybe they should join the SEC for the year. And then you saw some of the star players
00:07:56.100 impacted like Justin Fields out there saying, hey, you know, we want to play. My hot take is that you should
00:08:03.060 not have a bunch of administrators dictating these outcomes to students who have an interest in
00:08:09.700 pursuing their dream. And for many of these folks, they need this season, they need this opportunity
00:08:15.620 to progress. And there are going to be some real negative consequences if college football does not
00:08:21.380 go forward.
00:08:26.180 Brian Stelter is just one of the absolute worst CNN personalities, really one of the worst personalities
00:08:33.780 on all of cable news. And he had one of the coldest takes imaginable recently. Take a listen.
00:08:39.380 You know, when you see entire media companies essentially exist to tear down Joe Biden,
00:08:45.540 is there an equivalent to that on the left tearing down Trump?
00:08:49.060 There really isn't.
00:08:49.940 Brian, I think they're all trying to take down Trump. You know, when I watch the news,
00:08:53.940 it is just increasingly a homogenous chorus of mainstream media critique and attack and unwillingness
00:09:02.260 to focus on some of the good news, like the fact that even during coronavirus,
00:09:07.300 the president is building an economy that is beating expectations. And sure, there are still
00:09:12.180 many of people hurting. But imagine the type of rebuild that we'd be in with like Obama or Sleepy
00:09:18.420 Joe at the wheel. It would be a disaster. And so, you know, I think that Tucker Carlson probably had
00:09:24.580 the wittiest of responses. He had a little fun with the Brian Stelter piece. Take a listen to Tucker.
00:09:30.340 CNN took a quick break from its usual programming, encouraging looting and pointless mask wearing
00:09:36.820 outside to take some jabs at this channel. Entire media companies essentially exist to tear down
00:09:42.500 Joe Biden. Is there an equivalent to that on the left tearing down Trump? There really isn't.
00:09:47.460 That's a really good point. Nobody criticizes Trump in the media. And I think what we need more of,
00:09:54.500 people attacking Trump. Turns out the people who work over the cable news network don't watch it.
00:10:02.020 They watch this channel full time. So we dug up some clips for their edification.
00:10:06.260 It is what it is, Mr. President. It's a pandemic. And you are who you are. You don't give a damn.
00:10:13.220 The MAGA hat carries a certain connotation that provokes a conditioned reaction for many people,
00:10:19.220 especially for marginalized people. You said the president is using mind control.
00:10:23.380 But how is that provable? He does not practice humanity. He does not practice decency. He does
00:10:28.500 not love mercy. He is intentionally unkind. He is mean to opponents. Are you listening?
00:10:34.820 The president of the United States is a fraud and a con man. He's human garbage,
00:10:41.220 and he practices mind control. Tucker has it right. And frankly, it's increasingly his employer,
00:10:47.060 Fox News, that's hedging its bets as it relates to Trump. I think that reporting the news is not
00:10:54.580 something that is partisan. I just think it requires telling the truth. And the truth is that the president
00:11:01.460 built the strongest economy that the world has ever known. And I suspect if given another four years,
00:11:07.460 he'll do it again. Over 200 miles of border wall construction has occurred during the Trump
00:11:16.580 administration. It has been an important deterrent. It has allowed our border patrol and ICE to have
00:11:24.020 more targeted resources with their deployments and with their patrols, with the security and stability
00:11:30.260 of a wall system in place. And it's one of the strategies, along with others, like having people
00:11:36.820 wait for their asylum claims in Mexico and having folks return safely to Guatemala and Honduras directly
00:11:44.660 so that they're not just caught and released into our country. I think all those things that together
00:11:49.140 have allowed us to reduce the flow of illegal aliens coming across our border from its zenith of,
00:11:55.460 I mean, like we were at the point of 60,000 and more per month that were coming over. And now we've
00:12:01.540 got that, you know, cut way, way down as a consequence of the policies of the Trump administration.
00:12:07.140 But it would all stop if Joe Biden were elected president. DallasNews.com has the story,
00:12:12.820 Joe Biden saying that if he is elected president, he will stop construction of the border wall. He will
00:12:20.020 end the progress of the Trump administration. He will give up and wave the white flag of surrender
00:12:26.740 on our southern border. America's border is worth protecting. America's border sets a delineation
00:12:34.980 between that which is special and unique and ours and that which is the rest of the world. And I'm not
00:12:41.940 saying that the rest of the world shouldn't strive to be the best version of itself, but they'll never be
00:12:47.620 American. America is special and different. And that is why the securing of our borders and our
00:12:54.340 values and our culture is so critically important. If Joe Biden is elected, he will use the discretion
00:13:01.860 that the executive has to not allow the construction of our border wall to persist. That would be so
00:13:09.460 damaging to what we've done in the Congress and what President Trump has done to ensure that we do not
00:13:15.220 just have a steady flow of illegal aliens across our border. So just keep that in mind, competing policy
00:13:22.020 choices. And I think only one that puts America and Americans first.
00:13:30.980 The Republican Attorney General's Association canceled by Adobe. Adobe not allowing an ad from the
00:13:40.100 Republican Attorney General's Association, or RAGA, to run on their platforms, alleging that it is
00:13:46.580 depicting violence. Now, the ad is largely a critique of the defund the police movement, and it goes through
00:13:54.500 the lawlessness that has been embraced by liberalism while showing scenes and images depicting the dangers of
00:14:02.020 defunding the police and of not allowing law enforcement to be able to do their jobs during riots in particular.
00:14:09.540 Adobe saying that this doesn't conform to their culture and they're not going to allow it.
00:14:14.580 You know what the great irony is? The Republican attorneys general should be doing a great deal more
00:14:20.580 than they are to fight against big tech. Now, I've seen some class action lawsuits that they've filed.
00:14:26.260 I've seen the press releases and press statements. But what we need is litigation. What we need is discovery.
00:14:33.460 What we need are orders to compel. We need depositions. We need the development of record evidence. We need
00:14:40.180 to put on trials. And instead, Republican attorneys general have been pretty content just with kind of
00:14:46.980 a passing press release in response to the tyranny that big tech is imposing on citizens throughout
00:14:55.380 this great country. And now it's literally their own political arm that suffers the consequence of
00:15:01.540 inaction, both at the federal level and at the state level. This is going to continue. The big tech
00:15:08.340 companies will not stop until they snuff out conservatism and responsive conservative debate
00:15:17.540 throughout the Internet, throughout our digital experience. And so we have to wake up to this
00:15:22.260 threat. And we need our attorneys general at the state level. And we need the attorney general
00:15:28.020 of the United States to do more to hold big tech to account when they silence Americans.
00:15:38.260 If Donald Trump were to end the war in Afghanistan, if he were to bring our troops home from Iraq,
00:15:45.780 I honestly believe that he could win 40 states in the upcoming election. Revolver News has new polling.
00:15:53.300 Here's the headline. New poll shows overwhelming bipartisan support for Trump's troop withdrawals.
00:15:59.860 And the survey, which got the opinions of 2000 U.S. adults, showed 44 percent strongly supporting
00:16:08.420 bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq, 30 percent saying they somewhat support doing so. And for
00:16:14.020 Afghanistan, those numbers are 46 strongly support bringing home 30 percent saying they somewhat support
00:16:21.220 it. Look, oxygen and sunshine are not as popular as a withdrawal from these quagmires in the Middle
00:16:29.540 East. And it's great to see Revolver News going out there and surveying the thoughts of real Americans.
00:16:35.460 And it's my hope that what we see in Washington, D.C. will start to reflect what we see throughout this
00:16:41.860 country, a desire to end these Middle East wars, to invest our nation's treasure in our people,
00:16:48.500 in our economy, and then to position the next generation for the real challenge we have ahead.
00:16:54.500 And that's China. Thanks so much for listening to today's episode of Hot Takes.
