00:00:00.000 you ever watch this guy on television you all were not telling the truth and you should not
00:00:06.100 be trusted congressman matt gates thank you for what you did for your country today be offended
00:00:09.760 with the democratic whip not house republicans like a machine matt gates
00:00:13.940 welcome to hot takes i'm congressman matt gates if we sound a little bit different today it's
00:00:21.580 because i'm traveling i'm on the move following florida's primary election here i've got some
00:00:27.240 meetings in washington dc we'll get back to our normal equipment and our normal sound quality
00:00:32.640 very soon let's talk about the news and the news from florida's first congressional district is that
00:00:39.120 republicans have voted for me to the tune of 81 percent in last night's election to represent
00:00:45.360 our party on the november general election ballot and i've been in a few competitive republican
00:00:50.460 primaries before for congress and for the state legislature and i have never gotten 81 percent
00:00:57.220 of the republican vote and so this is really a high watermark for me very appreciative to my
00:01:03.160 constituents and i'm appreciative to the democrats and independents that came out and voted as well
00:01:08.340 because participating in our democracy is something we should never take for granted the fact that we
00:01:14.220 get to choose our leaders sets us apart from a lot of people throughout the world and you know i take a
00:01:20.220 lot of flack on social media and from some of the mainstream media pundits and the so-called
00:01:25.320 washington experts about how someone ought to approach the job of congressman and i'm grateful
00:01:30.900 that my fellow republicans back in northwest florida they seem to think that i'm doing okay and when
00:01:36.740 you get a performance review from tens of thousands of your constituents and they give you an 81 percent
00:01:44.060 when when compared to two other candidates it's certainly something that uh i know our whole team
00:01:49.500 takes a lot of pride in so we look forward to continuing to serve our district and hopefully
00:01:54.340 a lot of great floridians will be back out to vote in the november election as well
00:01:59.380 what an election night in the sunshine state i've covered the little mini disputes over the frame and
00:02:10.560 the focus of the republican party as they play out in some of these florida primaries i think that can
00:02:15.820 be indicative of the way that republicans shape our candidacies and our candidates uh all over
00:02:22.220 america and so in florida there were two races talked about them yesterday on the podcast uh ross
00:02:28.100 spano the incumbent against scott franklin the challenger the republican leadership had backed the
00:02:34.060 incumbent i backed the challenger last night scott franklin the challenger wins by about 1500 votes
00:02:40.920 and what's interesting about the franklin win is that it required a real comeback on the election
00:02:46.840 day vote you know in the state of florida around half the vote is actually collected and counted before
00:02:53.600 election day and then the remainder of the vote is that election day turnout so in in about half of the
00:03:00.320 electorate that had been counted before election day you had ross spano the incumbent leading by a little
00:03:06.600 more than a thousand votes and then when you got the election day turnout uh you saw scott franklin
00:03:12.980 prevail by about 2500 votes there for a margin of about 1500 votes so the establishment goes down
00:03:20.600 brooke singman of fox news has the story and i have the quote the geop establishment had a rough go of it
00:03:27.620 in my beloved sunshine state florida congressman says and that is yours truly because it was not just
00:03:33.000 the spano race there is an open primary well i guess i shouldn't say open primary there's a primary
00:03:38.900 without an incumbent congressman that is a republican so it's more of a free-for-all different members of
00:03:45.640 congress pick different candidates to support and all of the republican leadership had backed
00:03:51.740 pharmaceutical lobbyist amanda mackie i backed air force veteran anna paulina luna luna wins that race by
00:03:58.920 actually a wider margin than i expected she had a small deficit from the vote before election day
00:04:05.600 and then she has this really wash of support that shows up on election day and she ends up winning
00:04:11.200 that race by uh by uh you know well outside what would be a polling margin of error so now anna paulina
00:04:17.260 luna advances to compete with congressman charlie christ who is now a democrat who is the former
00:04:23.420 republican governor of florida former independent candidate for u.s senate so charlie has checked
00:04:29.860 all the bingo boxes on parties and now gets i think a very credible challenge from anna paulina luna
00:04:37.920 we're not going to get into the you know who folks should vote for but in just in terms of the frame of
00:04:43.220 the issue sets and sort of what it means about the different types of voters that vote on election day
00:04:48.120 versus by mail or in early votes it's certainly an interesting analysis and it is certainly
00:04:54.300 not the night that the establishment wanted but i think it's a great night for america first patriots
00:05:00.260 and certainly was a great night for those of us who support president trump
00:05:04.120 taiwan on did not literally used to mean only one adult beverage but according to a report from a
00:05:14.500 federal committee that is what the u.s should change its health recommendation to for men
00:05:19.080 going from a recommended two limit for alcoholic beverages per day to one alcoholic beverage per
00:05:26.640 day as the recommended dosage yet to be seen is whether or not if you go dry from monday to thursday
00:05:32.900 do you get to break that that hard cap of one maybe have a couple beers watch some sports get back to
00:05:39.900 good old american life well alcohol may be a little more unsafe than we originally thought
00:05:45.680 for the president and his administration to be successful delivering on the promises of his
00:05:54.180 historic 2016 campaign we have got to continue making progress and success against illegal immigration
00:06:01.960 the president's administration did so much to repatriate people from the northern triangle
00:06:07.500 to ensure that the asylum process wasn't just a catch and release joke we've built more than 200
00:06:13.580 miles of wall tens of thousands of asylum seekers are either waiting their hearing in mexico or in
00:06:21.220 their home country rather than waiting in the united states of america so really monumental stuff
00:06:27.860 has happened to try to rescue us from this invite everyone over the border illegally mentality that we saw
00:06:34.500 too often from the obama administration and now the president makes the trip back to yuma arizona
00:06:40.840 here's the president under the trump administration if you cross our border illegally you are quickly
00:06:46.480 apprehended and swiftly returned back home
00:06:49.380 we are proudly defending the job safety and security of the american people which is what i promised to do
00:06:59.520 nobody told me it was going to be this hard nobody told me i was going to have the democrats go totally
00:07:05.960 crazy this was like a life and death war
00:07:08.800 you know why they don't talk about it anymore because they know it's bad politics because they
00:07:16.000 know having a wall they can't win that one so they just say let's forget it ever happened
00:07:20.200 because we won and they say let's forget they don't want to talk about it that includes the millions
00:07:25.780 of incredible hispanic americans who follow our laws uplift our community
00:07:31.220 and protect our nation in uniform
00:07:37.700 with the help of these patriots we've stopped the rampant asylum fraud shut down the human smugglers and
00:07:45.700 we're finding the drug dealers traffickers predators and we're throwing them to hell in jail or sending them
00:07:51.700 back home
00:07:56.180 for the first time that you've ever seen this ms 13 is totally on the run
00:08:01.620 many of its leaders are right now behind bars and we're deporting its members in record numbers
00:08:07.140 we've never reported i can't believe how many there are
00:08:13.300 the woketopian left is not done cancelling conservatives in fact in many ways they're just
00:08:18.900 getting started but that certainly doesn't stop them from going after some of their own
00:08:23.940 fox news is ron blitzer has the story biden campaign distances itself from former woman's
00:08:30.100 march leader sarsour after dnc appearance so apparently this lady linda sarsour is a women's march
00:08:39.940 original organizer but she has said some pretty rough things about israel a very anti-semitic in the
00:08:46.740 view of biden's frame on the bds movement biden casts the boycott divest sanction movement as an
00:08:53.620 effort to delegitimize israel he then says as a consequence he will not support that movement
00:09:00.020 she was a strong supporter of bds many in the congress and throughout the country really see that
00:09:06.900 as an eruption of anti-semitism and the utilization of economic power to try to stop israel from even
00:09:14.900 having the opportunity to exist and provide for its own people i certainly oppose the bds movement
00:09:20.980 strongly in the congress and while democrats are the only ones that have supported it it certainly
00:09:27.540 does not appear to be the goal of the biden campaign to support it which is why it makes it a little
00:09:32.260 awkward that linda is on the video screen during one of the showcase moments of the democratic convention
00:09:40.260 last night and so the biden campaign today has to come out and say they're not associated with her
00:09:45.460 not affiliated with her but it raises the question why was her image and her likeness that which was
00:09:51.700 promoted look you know i i think there's probably some technician or some low-level producer in the
00:09:58.580 campaign somewhere who probably put that in and didn't realize who they were using i don't get the
00:10:03.380 sense that we ought to use the tools of the left to cancel people i think we should use these absurd
00:10:10.180 moments to mock how ridiculous the cancel culture is but without question the bds movement is something
00:10:16.740 that from a policy standpoint cannot be supported and i'm frankly glad to see that biden himself
00:10:23.380 and president trump both oppose bds
00:10:26.340 attorney general bill barr giving a press conference on operation legend let's listen in
00:10:34.900 we launched operation legend in kansas city and one of the key factors in that decision was that we
00:10:43.540 were working with a superb police department and outstanding police leadership three weeks ago we've
00:10:51.620 substantially expanded operation legend and we are now underway in nine u.s cities the operation is named
00:11:02.100 for legend talaferro a four-year-old boy who was shot while he was asleep in his apartment the most basic
00:11:11.940 duty of government is to provide for the safety of the community operation legend is the heart of the
00:11:18.260 the federal government's response to this upturn in violent crime its mission is to save lives
00:11:27.380 solve crimes and take violent offenders off the streets before they can claim more victims
00:11:36.900 fernando tatis jr might be the best player in baseball right now leading the league in home runs
00:11:43.620 the 21 year old phenom is in the news though for another reason did he break one of the unwritten
00:11:50.420 rules of baseball did he apply a different sense of competition and incentive and reward to a game that
00:11:57.780 values tradition and a little more collegiality is that a generational thing so i want to talk about
00:12:04.740 let me set the scene for you the rangers are losing to the padres the rangers are in the field
00:12:12.740 the padres are up like you know seven runs the bases are loaded 3-0 count and tatis gets the
00:12:20.980 take sign that he apparently misses he swings at the pitch and hits a grand slam now the unwritten rules
00:12:29.060 of baseball would say bases loaded 3-0 count you got a big lead you take a pitch you're just trying to get
00:12:36.420 the game over with but not for this 21 year old free spirit as his manager called him and after the
00:12:43.060 game what i found interesting is that the managers of both teams criticized tatis and said that it
00:12:49.860 wasn't the right thing to do to swing at the pitch so here's the question for the listener what would
00:12:54.660 you do in that situation if you were leading the league in home runs and had the chance to hit another
00:13:00.580 one if your compensation was going to be based on these objective metrics of production like rbis and
00:13:07.860 runs if you know you're going to get a good pitch 3-0 with the bases loaded are you taking that pitch
00:13:13.780 are you taking the swing i'm taking the swing all day and i'm standing with fernando tatis jr i think
00:13:20.740 that in a world where we try to get the maximum compensation and value for our skills in a capitalistic
00:13:27.540 economy one ought to be able to perform at their highest level if that is the reward based system
00:13:33.700 so uh in the following at that the pitcher juan niasco actually throws behind the hitter for the
00:13:40.900 padres who was on tatis's team and that sparked a warning from the umpires a little message getting
00:13:47.620 sent back and forth but i want to live in an america where every time you're up at the plate you have
00:13:54.580 an opportunity to swing for the fences and in baseball we should do no less thanks for listening
00:14:01.220 to today's episode of hot takes i'm congressman matt gates tune in tomorrow for more hot takes
