00:00:00.000 You ever watch this guy on television?
00:00:03.780 You all were not telling the truth and you should not be trusted.
00:00:06.540 Congressman Matt Gaetz, thank you for what you did for your country tonight.
00:00:09.280 Be offended with the Democratic whip, not House Republicans.
00:00:12.240 Like a machine, Matt Gaetz.
00:00:16.420 Welcome to Hot Takes, I'm Congressman Matt Gaetz.
00:00:19.440 Let's talk about the news.
00:00:20.960 The President had some hot takes in Pennsylvania.
00:00:23.600 Take a listen.
00:00:24.140 We will make our critical drugs, medicines and supplies here in the United States.
00:00:29.040 We will give tax credits to companies to bring jobs back to America.
00:00:34.340 And if they don't do it, we'll put tariffs on those companies and they'll have to pay us a lot of money.
00:00:38.720 So what are they going to do?
00:00:39.880 They're going to bring the jobs back.
00:00:41.640 In every action, every moment and every decision, I'm fighting for you.
00:00:46.600 I'm fighting for Pennsylvania.
00:00:51.420 A lot of people got rich and got powerful at your expense.
00:00:56.140 Now, these same liberal hypocrites want to open up borders and let violent mobs rule the streets
00:01:04.220 while they live in Waldorf compounds and communities.
00:01:08.460 They want to defund police while hiring private security.
00:01:12.540 They want to let rioters burn churches while jailing you for praying in your church.
00:01:18.440 They want to abolish school choice while sending their children to the best private schools in the land.
00:01:24.800 They want to cancel you, totally cancel you, take your job, turn your family against you for speaking your mind
00:01:34.180 while they indoctrinate your children with twisted, twisted worldviews that nobody ever thought possible.
00:01:42.660 And as the Democratic National Convention comes to a close, I thought Tucker Carlson had a very interesting perspective
00:01:49.260 on the Democrats' view of history and America, love of country, and the patriotism that is necessary
00:01:56.480 to maintain the greatest country in the world.
00:01:59.040 Here's Tucker.
00:01:59.480 So if you watch this stuff for long enough, and we have, it's pretty easy to forget that it's pretty fringy, actually.
00:02:05.460 Look at the polls.
00:02:06.660 Most people don't agree with this.
00:02:08.540 Most Americans like their country.
00:02:10.800 That's why they live here.
00:02:12.460 And a lot of them display that affection by standing for the national anthem.
00:02:16.280 It seems like a small thing, but it means quite a bit to people.
00:02:19.920 Americans have died in battle to protect our national symbols.
00:02:23.020 That is a talking point, yes, but it's not just a talking point.
00:02:26.520 It really happened.
00:02:28.300 But they don't know anything about that at the Democratic National Convention,
00:02:31.000 and they don't think that your kids ought to know about it either.
00:02:33.960 And that's why they've endorsed Erasing American History.
00:02:37.560 Are you keeping track at home if not we're at Erase American History, Rewrite the Pledge of Allegiance,
00:02:43.500 Mock and Degrade the National Anthem, Turn Christianity into a Political Weapon?
00:02:47.880 They have been busy over there at the Democratic National Convention.
00:02:53.020 Service canceled.
00:02:55.820 That's what American Airlines is sharing with more than a dozen of their various cities that they had previously served.
00:03:03.480 Del Rio, Texas, Dubuque, Iowa, Florence, South Carolina, Greenville, North Carolina, Huntington, West Virginia,
00:03:09.980 Joplin, Missouri, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Lake Charles, Louisiana, New Haven, Connecticut,
00:03:14.440 New Windsor, New York, Roswell, New Mexico, Sioux City, Iowa, Springfield, Illinois, Stillwater, Oklahoma,
00:03:21.160 and Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
00:03:23.800 Those cities will see their American Airlines service conclude.
00:03:28.080 There are more than 25,000 employees that will be furloughed.
00:03:32.720 And these cities range from about, you know, 30,000 to about half a million.
00:03:38.240 They are clearly the lower mid-tier markets that American Airlines serves.
00:03:42.540 But it's frustrating and disappointing to see after a massive stimulus, after the CARES Act that provided so much relief to airlines that they are concluding service.
00:03:53.180 And it's noteworthy that American Airlines is also, I think, the airline that said, we're going to put people in the middle seats.
00:03:59.740 We can make money better.
00:04:03.140 We can make money only if we put people in the middle seats.
00:04:06.080 And while Delta, Southwest, and others have not done that, you see American making decisions to pack planes to cut flights.
00:04:16.460 Here's my hot take.
00:04:17.760 This better not be the result of some big corporate windfall.
00:04:21.220 We better not be seeing any stock buybacks.
00:04:23.500 We better not be seeing any golden parachutes for senior management, CEOs, board members.
00:04:30.080 The reason the CARES Act was passed was because air travel is important for economic growth, business connectivity, human connectivity throughout our country.
00:04:39.620 Frankly, in a lot of other countries, they support their airlines more than we do with direct government investment.
00:04:45.880 We choose a more free market approach.
00:04:47.540 But in this time where the industry was really sent through a shockwave, we did provide some support through Fed policy, through appropriations of the Congress.
00:04:57.540 And the result, as far as American Airlines customers can see, is no real dedication to the same types of social distancing features that we see in other airlines and a diminution in the number of cities served.
00:05:13.980 Disappointing to see.
00:05:15.280 We hope things get better for airlines.
00:05:16.800 CNN's, CNN's Jackie Watliss, has the story.
00:05:20.560 We'll keep following it.
00:05:25.260 Would you fly on an airplane that had no pilot?
00:05:29.780 The opportunity may present itself sooner than you think.
00:05:33.160 Wired's Gregory Barber has the story.
00:05:36.840 This plane flies itself.
00:05:38.860 We went for a ride.
00:05:39.900 And it's the story of the company Zwing and their work on the Caravan Cessna product that is able to do a takeoff, a final approach, and a lot of in-flight activity without a pilot in the cockpit.
00:05:54.220 In fact, the pilot is on the ground, in this case, utilizing a joystick, flying the aircraft, really like a remote-controlled drone.
00:06:03.220 And the features of modern aviation have allowed computing and robotics and artificial intelligence to do a lot of the activity that already occurs in flight.
00:06:17.400 Really, the principal feature of the pilot is as a communications operator.
00:06:22.320 If conditions change, if there's traffic, if there's a sense that something needs to occur differently, the pilot is there to communicate that to ground control and to others in the area.
00:06:33.960 But if the pilot is communicating those very things from the ground, if they're able to get all the sensor technology, it may be possible to remove the pilot from the cockpit.
00:06:44.620 So, very interesting thing to watch.
00:06:46.480 And, you know, again, as we talk about the health of the aviation industry, maybe this is a cost-saving that keeps people safer.
00:06:54.480 We'll see. We'll follow it.
00:06:56.040 Thanks for the story, Wired.
00:07:00.240 Move over, Gavin Newsom.
00:07:01.800 You are no longer the biggest Democratic star in California politics.
00:07:07.340 That honor seems to go to Kamala Harris these days.
00:07:10.340 If you look back to Gavin Newsom's time as mayor and then rising through the state California Democratic political machine and then his election as governor, you'd think he was the man.
00:07:22.220 He was the one that Democrats would ultimately look to as a presidential candidate from the Golden State.
00:07:27.960 And now, with all the buzz on Kamala, with, you know, her national candidacy affixed to Biden, there is the presumption that Newsom might not be the guy.
00:07:37.820 He might not be the leading California politician.
00:07:40.820 The story is chronicled by Politico, Carla Marianucci.
00:07:46.000 And there, you know, the story is that with Kamala Harris likely to be a candidate for president in the future, whether Joe Biden is successful or not, with the likelihood that Joe Biden, if he were elected president, would only serve one term,
00:08:03.720 seems to ignite the prospect of Kamala Harris as the frontrunner in a potential nomination battle down the road.
00:08:11.220 And it remains to be seen what the California experience with declining revenue, with a contracting economy, with seemingly inconsistent decisions on the coronavirus swinging back and forth,
00:08:24.260 if that really is the profile of Gavin Newsom's leadership that he would want.
00:08:28.800 But a second fiddle now, Kamala, the darling of the California Democratic Party.
00:08:37.500 There's an air leak on the International Space Station, and those aboard are working hard to fix it.
00:08:44.480 The story comes to us through Dave Mosher at Business Insider.
00:08:48.940 In the International Space Station has sprung a small air leak.
00:08:52.180 So a NASA astronaut and two cosmonauts are hunkering down to help find it and repair it.
00:09:00.200 So the International Space Station is seeing a slight increase in the leakage of air, according to NASA.
00:09:06.260 NASA said the leak presents no immediate danger to the crew or to the space station and was within normal operating limits.
00:09:13.880 However, because of the new increase, two cosmonauts and an astronaut living aboard the space station will spend the weekend inside a Russian module to help locate the source.
00:09:25.180 The crew has an option if there is the unlikely requirement for an urgent escape.
00:09:33.580 They do have a spaceship there to be able to get in.
00:09:37.020 But the hope and the expectation is that that's not going to be the case.
00:09:40.560 The orbiting laboratory is about the size of a football field.
00:09:44.920 It is not perfectly sealed.
00:09:46.720 It always leaks a bit of air.
00:09:49.000 This is a slight increase.
00:09:50.800 We hope that our great astronaut and the cosmonauts that he's on board with will not have to take short breaths,
00:09:57.080 that they will complete their mission and be back to Earth safe and healthy.
00:10:04.320 California has ruined so many things by constraining freedom, growing government,
00:10:09.900 and limiting the choices and options for its people now.
00:10:14.060 Even Rideshare, Uber, and Lyft are in real jeopardy of being run out of the state of California.
00:10:21.120 They received an emergency stay in the implementation of the recent judicial order
00:10:28.080 that would have classified their gig workers as employees.
00:10:33.140 The stay allows them to continue operations for now.
00:10:36.740 Here's my hot take.
00:10:37.680 An Uber driver, a Lyft driver, is not an employee of the Uber and Lyft companies.
00:10:45.480 They are partners.
00:10:46.580 They are independent contractors.
00:10:48.840 If you're an employee, your boss tells you what your schedule is.
00:10:52.720 They tell you what you have to wear to work.
00:10:55.180 They tell you when your brakes can be.
00:10:58.000 Uber and Lyft drivers choose how often they work.
00:11:01.240 They choose the manner in which they work.
00:11:03.480 They choose the car they drive.
00:11:06.600 Lyft, Uber, other rideshare platforms, they are just that.
00:11:10.280 They are not transportation companies.
00:11:12.420 They are technology companies.
00:11:14.320 They connect someone who needs a ride and is willing to pay for it
00:11:18.440 with someone who is willing to offer that ride at the price that is willing to be received.
00:11:23.420 And the technology company takes a vig for making that connection.
00:11:26.960 But you've had some in the Woketopia of California wanting to classify every driver as an employee
00:11:33.640 where then they would be required to get health care.
00:11:35.420 They would be required to get benefits.
00:11:37.120 They would generate payroll tax liability.
00:11:40.560 That's nonsense.
00:11:41.940 And it's just an effort to try to have government more involved in the relationship with people
00:11:46.900 who are engaging in private sector free commerce.
00:11:49.900 People like Uber.
00:11:51.600 They like Lyft.
00:11:52.540 They like the option to take a ride.
00:11:55.600 These companies have reduced drunk driving.
00:11:58.700 They have, I think, in many ways improved the taxi industry because there's competition.
00:12:04.560 They help people get around safely.
00:12:06.360 I've seen cases where people have been able to use their Uber Lyft location in abductions,
00:12:14.200 in circumstances where they're concerned and need to get out of an unsafe situation.
00:12:19.420 And so I want an economy and a country that embraces innovation,
00:12:24.360 that allows people to engage in the commerce of their choice,
00:12:28.260 and that I think enhances public safety.
00:12:32.380 The California employment regulations as attempted to be imposed on Uber
00:12:38.400 are not good for the people of California.
00:12:40.800 They're not good for our economy.
00:12:42.200 And I hope the politicians out there on the West Coast get their act together and serve their people.
00:12:49.420 No more parties at Airbnb.
00:12:55.100 That's right.
00:12:56.320 The company making the decision that occupancy will be capped at 16 people,
00:13:01.760 that the party ban applies to all future bookings,
00:13:04.980 and will remain in effect indefinitely until further notice.
00:13:09.680 It is a global ban on all parties and events at Airbnb listings.
00:13:15.320 Now, obviously, this has an effect on the user of Airbnb, the booker,
00:13:19.680 but it also has an effect on these small businesses that have been created and really, I think, enhanced by the Airbnb platform.
00:13:28.000 Weddings are a common, I think, industry in beautiful coastal towns in northwest Florida where I live.
00:13:37.000 A lot of those wedding venues are available on Airbnb, and now no more.
00:13:42.160 Now, I think that this is in part a consequence of coronavirus, obviously.
00:13:46.040 Airbnb doesn't want the liability.
00:13:48.100 Some of their hosts may not want to allow parties, though I think there's a way on the application now to be able to ban parties for those who are seeking to use someone's particular property.
00:14:00.420 But I also think this is a consequence of just the dynamic at Airbnb where you get a lot of the benefits of hotels,
00:14:09.980 but without some of the safety features and cleanliness precautions and other things that one might expect from a licensed, insured, regulated lodging establishment.
00:14:21.920 Here's my hot take.
00:14:23.860 Let the people decide.
00:14:25.360 Let the users decide.
00:14:26.600 Look, if a host wants to make their property available for events and someone wants to take the risk and do it,
00:14:32.300 why would the platform prohibit that?
00:14:34.740 Maybe a particular event is going to have temp checks.
00:14:37.760 Maybe there's going to be on-site testing.
00:14:40.180 Maybe there's going to be testing results required prior to entry.
00:14:43.260 So I don't like the idea of a global blanket rule.
00:14:46.580 Obviously, this is not something the government should get involved in.
00:14:49.300 There have been calls throughout Airbnb's existence to utilize the apparatus of local government, state government, the federal government to constrain Airbnb's utilization and to limit the extent to which, you know, people can park at an Airbnb or the check-in, check-out regulations or limited periods of stay.
00:15:11.020 Those are all the type of regulations we've seen.
00:15:13.080 I've largely opposed those.
00:15:14.340 I think that really the ultimate determination as to whether or not a booking is going to be successful should fall to the person providing the property and the person using the property.
00:15:26.080 But no more parties.
00:15:28.220 No more Airbnb soirees.
00:15:31.200 I guess you'll have to party somewhere else.
00:15:36.840 Suburban voters, and in particular suburban women, might not be ready for the woke-topia.
00:15:43.160 Yahoo News' Suzanne Smalley has the story, the warning coming from Representative Debbie Dingell of Michigan, the Democrats could see voters abandon them over violence in the streets, over attack against law enforcement.
00:15:59.740 And Debbie Dingell, in this case, is saying that violence could be more important than trade this election year.
00:16:06.620 We all know that Michigan is a swing state.
00:16:09.320 It was a state that not a lot of folks gave President Trump a chance in, but he won that state by about 11,000 votes.
00:16:16.420 And Debbie Dingell, you know, relatively astute as a Michigan politician, her husband, John Dingell, represented that state for quite some time.
00:16:24.680 And she's saying that while she's been supportive of the Black Lives Matter movement, that the riots that have resulted, the attacks on law enforcement, have people concerned about their safety.
00:16:36.360 I always believe that Maslow's hierarchy of needs has strong application to politics.
00:16:43.240 If people do not feel safe and secure in their homes, in their businesses, in their lives, they are not likely to be thinking about their highest levels of wokeness or other things that could enhance their pursuits as a human being.
00:16:58.820 And security is essential domestically, politically, and in every sense.
00:17:05.300 And so when you see the radical left attacking law enforcement and those who keep us safe, it certainly paints a picture for America what this country would look like if Joe Biden were president and if he were getting bowled over each and every day by the Chaz, Chop, woke left.
00:17:26.660 And you know what? Debbie Dingell might be on to something.
00:17:30.380 America might love America.
00:17:33.160 America might want to stay safe, secure, and prosperous.
00:17:37.000 I know I sure do.
00:17:38.260 And I hope my friends in Michigan do as well.
00:17:41.240 Thanks so much for listening to Hot Takes.
00:17:43.320 I'm Congressman Matt Gaetz.
00:17:45.080 Hope you enjoy the show.
00:17:46.580 Hope you leave a five-star rating.
00:17:49.220 Put in a review.
00:17:50.320 Let us know what you'd like to hear.
00:17:52.040 And join us next week for more Hot Takes.
00:17:56.660 Hot Takes.
