Summary

A Trump supporter was shot and killed in Portland, Oregon, at the same time as violent clashes broke out between supporters of President Trump and counter-protesters in the streets of the city. Rep. Matt Gaetz has a hot take about this.

00:00:00.000 Welcome to Hot Takes. I'm Congressman Matt Gaetz. Let's talk about the news. The news
00:00:21.060 in Portland is death with apparently a Trump supporter dying in the violence and the riots
00:00:27.940 there. Here's the latest. One person is dead from a shooting in downtown Portland last night.
00:00:33.160 At the same time, we saw violent clashes around the city between supporters of President Trump
00:00:37.760 and counter protesters. This was the scene at Southwest 3rd and Alder. Homicide detectives
00:00:43.560 were there most of the night and they say the victim was shot in the chest. Here's my hot take.
00:00:48.420 There are many places on the planet Earth where political violence is necessary, where people
00:00:53.800 will not achieve freedom as the consequence of the United States sending our best, but
00:00:59.700 will in fact need to summon their own best to fight and yes, even at times die for the chance
00:01:05.940 to live free and for politics. America is not a place where people need to be dying because
00:01:13.280 of their politics, because of riots, because of this type of just straight up destruction.
00:01:19.940 And so whether that violence comes from the right or the left, I condemn it universally.
00:01:26.320 America is the greatest country on Earth and we do not need to see our fellow Americans dying
00:01:31.500 in the streets like this. But Portland isn't the only place seeing the incitement of violence.
00:01:37.700 Listen to what a Black Lives Matter leader, a leader of this group, is saying to an organized
00:01:44.280 group on the streets of Washington, D.C. Shocking stuff.
00:01:47.960 I'm at the point where I'm going to put these police in the f***ing grave.
00:01:53.020 I'm at the point where I want to burn the f***ing White House down.
00:02:00.260 I want to take it to the senators. I want to take it to the Congress.
00:02:06.120 I want to take the fight to them. And at the end of the day, if they ain't going to hear us,
00:02:13.040 we burn them the f***ing hell down.
00:02:17.940 I'm one that talk real s***ing.
00:02:20.860 I talk it in New York and I talk it in D.C.
00:02:23.920 The same way I f***ing police up in New York, I f***ing cops up here in D.C.
00:02:31.040 The same way I bust police in the head in New York, I bust police in the head in D.C.
00:02:35.800 Now, it's a lot of people, and I'm going to be honest, it's a lot of people that's on this
00:02:43.880 front line. And one of the things that I always say, don't get on this f***ing front line if
00:02:48.960 you ain't going to f***ing fight. Don't get on this front line if you ain't going to take
00:02:53.820 no hit. Don't get on this front line. When the police f***ing push up, you push back.
00:03:00.460 If you're going to be on this front line and them racist, nasty ass, punk ass f***ing police
00:03:07.160 is pushing up, you push the f*** up.
00:03:09.700 Put cops in their graves. Burn down our country, our leaders. And here's what America needs to know.
00:03:19.140 The big businesses in this country, the corporations, the left-wing billionaires who are funding the
00:03:26.780 Black Lives Matter movement are funding this rhetoric on our streets. So in this machine
00:03:32.580 that they have concocted, the inputs are the millions and millions and millions of donations
00:03:38.660 that you have seen from corporate America, some of the biggest companies in our country.
00:03:44.740 Then the process is what you hear in these chants and in these really left-wing calls for attacks
00:03:54.260 against America, her leaders, her law enforcement, her people. And then the outcome is what you see in
00:04:01.640 Portland. And frankly, we're seeing those outcomes in Kenosha as well, where Americans are in the streets
00:04:12.000 in unsafe, uncertain interactions with one another. At times, those interactions are leading to murder
00:04:18.920 and death. And this is not the consequence of, you know, Donald Trump's presidency. This is consequence
00:04:25.080 of tolerance for this type of conduct in liberal Democrat-run cities and states. You know, if this
00:04:33.660 were happening in the state of Florida, Governor DeSantis would shut it down. If this were happening in
00:04:37.920 the state of Texas, Governor Abbott would shut it down. But it's happening in places where I think
00:04:42.740 you've got some Democrat mayors and some Democrat governors who think it will help politically to turn
00:04:49.980 America into a place of violence leading up to the election where Donald Trump will be on the ballot. They
00:04:57.060 hope that that will inflame people in their politics. But it's not worth seeing our fellow Americans die.
00:05:04.300 It's not worth this type of very dangerous rhetoric funded by left-wing billionaires in corporate
00:05:11.740 America, like you heard on the streets of Washington, D.C. I condemn all of it. I think
00:05:16.940 that we should unify as a country to solve problems, to beat the coronavirus, to rebuild our economy,
00:05:23.720 to re-domesticate manufacturing, to become more resilient against China, and then to execute a foreign
00:05:29.740 policy that ensures that we are able to invest our treasure and our best people in American
00:05:35.780 greatness. That sounds a lot better than what you're hearing in Kenosha, in Portland, and on
00:05:42.360 the streets of Washington, D.C. Chief of Staff Mark Meadows was on Meet the Press expressing the
00:05:50.440 frustration that the Trump administration has with these local officials who, by consequence of their
00:05:57.240 weakness, their bad decisions, their, I think, misunderstanding of the riots going on in their
00:06:05.240 communities, are really making it hard to work together to create safety and law and order.
00:06:11.120 Listen to just a portion of the interview.
00:06:12.460 We've had over 97 federal law enforcement arrests that were conducted in Portland, but largely the DA
00:06:20.940 they're there in Portland, Chuck, you know, he says, even if you accost a police officer, we're not going
00:06:27.120 to enforce that. It's just not what most Americans believe should be happening in our cities.
00:06:32.380 Refusing to prosecute people who assault the police, refusing to enforce the law just because you've got
00:06:40.320 some sympathy with the protesters, that is not an appropriate use of prosecutorial discretion.
00:06:46.040 If someone attacks or assaults the police, they ought to face the consequences. That is how we
00:06:53.920 ensure that we continue to have good people willing to engage in the profession of policing
00:06:58.800 to make our neighborhoods and our communities and our country safe.
00:07:05.040 Democrats are very concerned about the bump that Republicans seem to be getting as a consequence
00:07:12.560 of not only our convention, but the Democrats' convention as well. And while I can't get into
00:07:18.220 too much politics on our podcast, I can share that the greatest increases for the president have been
00:07:25.660 among African-American men. That is where we have really seen a surge lately. I think that the commentary
00:07:33.040 from Vernon Jones, from Herschel Walker, from Jack Brewer at the convention really cut through the normal
00:07:40.940 back and forth of politics that we see at these things. And I think a lot of African-American men
00:07:45.880 are wanting to, you know, get the benefit of the economic progress our country has seen under
00:07:53.480 President Trump. I think that it speaks directly to a kitchen table issue when you're talking about
00:07:59.580 people's job and their progress and their wages. And that is what I think was pretty effectively
00:08:05.700 accomplished. So what does the Biden campaign do in response? They trot out Cedric Richmond,
00:08:12.040 a national co-chair of the Biden campaign, a House Democrat, a leader in the Congressional Black
00:08:17.440 Caucus. And he just straight up lies to the American people on Meet the Press. Listen to
00:08:22.840 Congressman Richmond here.
00:08:24.080 I think now black men see clearly what they have to lose. They can get killed and the president won't say
00:08:30.920 a word, won't utter Jacob Blake's name, will not talk about police reform.
00:08:35.680 Now listen to what he said there. The president won't talk about police reform. That is a lie.
00:08:41.160 President Trump has signed multiple executive orders to try to enhance the best type of policing
00:08:48.180 within our communities. And I just want to talk about one such change in policy the president talked
00:08:54.560 about and the president led and it related to chokeholds. In a lot of these various grant proposals,
00:09:00.920 that are submitted by local police departments, there is discretion for the agencies of the
00:09:07.120 federal government to rank what grants to offer. And the Trump administration, I think very wisely,
00:09:14.160 didn't do a national ban, didn't do something that would stifle innovation, would stop the research
00:09:21.160 that's going on about different types of constraints. And we've talked about those on the podcast.
00:09:26.120 But what he did was he said that if you are a local police department and you want to apply
00:09:30.120 for one of these federal grants, you're going to get priority if you've done your homework,
00:09:36.420 if you've implemented the research, if you've got policies that create de-escalation rather than
00:09:42.860 the type of environment that would create a chokehold. Here's the president talking about this
00:09:47.520 when he implemented the executive order.
00:09:49.420 What's needed now is not more stoking of fear and division. We need to bring law enforcement
00:09:55.920 and communities closer together, not to drive them apart. Under the executive order I'm signing
00:10:03.100 today, we will prioritize federal grants from the Department of Justice to police departments
00:10:09.180 that seek independent credentialing, certifying that they meet high standards. And in fact, in certain
00:10:16.080 cases, the highest standard, that's where they do the best on the use of force and de-escalation
00:10:23.380 training. As part of this new credentialing process, chokeholds will be banned, except if
00:10:30.660 an officer's life is at risk. We will provide more resources for co-responders, such as social
00:10:38.600 workers who can help officers manage these complex encounters. We will have reform without
00:10:45.540 undermining our many great and extremely talented law enforcement officers.
00:10:50.860 So there's the president talking about policing reform, working on policing reform. Senator Tim
00:10:56.000 Scott working on policing reform. And Cedric Richmond realizing that the Biden campaign is
00:11:02.360 sagging in support among African-American males willing to go out and meet the press and lie to the
00:11:07.540 country. It's really shameful because you know what? There's a lot of stuff we agree on. We should not have
00:11:12.880 no-knock warrants. Why won't Nancy Pelosi put a bill on the floor, put the Breonna Taylor Act
00:11:17.580 on the floor to end no-knock warrants? I would vote for it. And by the way, you know who has the
00:11:22.480 companion bill? Senator Rand Paul. So you've got Republicans willing to engage in reforms, but they
00:11:28.860 don't want the police reform. They want the issue. And that's what's so insidious about Cedric
00:11:33.660 Richmond's interview. If Democrats really wanted solutions, they would take these various provisions
00:11:39.600 that have been workshopped in committee that have been worked on for years by Senator Tim Scott and
00:11:44.500 put them up for a vote. Some will pass, some will fail. But I think a bunch of them will get signed
00:11:49.180 into law and our country would be a better place. But they're willing to accept policing that isn't as
00:11:54.860 good, policies that aren't as good, so that Cedric Richmond and others like him in the Biden camp are
00:12:02.420 able to go out and lie to the American people on television. And you know what? The lies aren't
00:12:07.140 working. The truth is cutting through. Herschel Walker, Vernon Jones, Jack Brewer, so many others. Tito
00:12:14.220 Ortiz recently out there talking about the benefits of the Trump presidency to so many different groups
00:12:20.400 of Americans. And I think that positivity will ultimately prevail. And then hopefully, we could
00:12:26.380 actually work on some of the things that will improve policing for everyone.
00:12:32.420 6%. That's the number that's been trending. The CDC releasing information that only 6% of the deaths
00:12:42.980 from coronavirus were not linked with some other comorbidity. We've talked on the podcast before
00:12:49.660 about how respiratory comorbidities are impactful to the acuity level of someone's health condition if
00:12:57.540 they contract the coronavirus. But if you listen to every episode, you know that the number one
00:13:03.460 comorbidity is obesity, right? And so 94% of the people who have died of coronavirus have had some
00:13:13.180 comorbidity, whether it's asthma, obesity, diabetes, you know, some other autoimmune deficiency.
00:13:21.460 And it is quite something for politicians to continue to exercise their power by seeking
00:13:29.420 lockdowns and shut-ins and restrictions and making people's businesses illegal and not letting them go to
00:13:36.240 church when, not the vast majority, when almost everyone who has died of coronavirus has had some
00:13:43.960 comorbidity linked to that. And so we've been saying all along, a lot like the governor of Florida,
00:13:49.580 if you're a little bit older, if you've got one of these comorbidities, you know, maybe you ought to
00:13:56.800 self-isolate, take the social distancing a little more seriously, don't travel where you'll be
00:14:03.540 necessarily tucked in with someone, don't go to any gathering of people that's particularly large,
00:14:10.060 get yourself tested maybe a little more frequently. All of those things can be done without taking the
00:14:15.940 other, you know, vast majority of Americans and subjecting them to these conditions of economic
00:14:22.660 malaise, social discord, and other problems that have arisen from the coronavirus that we've documented
00:14:29.720 from mental health challenges to drug abuse, all kinds of really negative impacts when you've got these
00:14:38.560 pervasive wide-scale lockdowns. Now, this is not to say that, you know, coronavirus is not real or that
00:14:45.480 it's not very worthy of our consideration. To the contrary, a lot of people do have comorbidities.
00:14:53.420 You know, there are a lot of people who are obese, who have asthma, who have other concerns that ought to
00:14:58.800 be in the front of their mind when considering their cleanliness, their interactions with others,
00:15:04.000 and their strategy to confront the virus. But each and every person does not need to have the same
00:15:10.640 strategy to confront the virus. And I think that if we look at this data, we'll be well informed. And I
00:15:17.080 think we'll be, I think, in a better position to make policy decisions to spark the great American
00:15:23.620 revival that we need to return to the economic activity, the production activity, the trade activity
00:15:33.240 that puts our people and our country first.
00:15:39.400 Guy Benson is a Fox News contributor, and a friend of his got a note from a neighbor. Now, Guy's friend
00:15:46.820 had simply put out a Trump-Pence 2020 sign in their yard. And so for the grave offense of having a Trump
00:15:55.860 sign in their yard, this is the note that they got from their neighbor. It is amazing.
00:16:00.560 Dear neighbor, thank you for proudly and prominently displaying your signs of political support.
00:16:07.940 These symbols make it impossible for us to ignore how you truly feel about us as your neighbors.
00:16:13.880 They make abundantly clear to those of us who are women, people of color, immigrants, and those who
00:16:19.500 may worship or love differently from you that you simply don't care about us at all. We know that in
00:16:26.180 our times of need, if we are scared or hurting, we cannot turn to you for help because you hold no
00:16:32.980 charity or grace in your heart for us. You make it clear by these signs that you neither respect us
00:16:40.980 as humans nor believe we are entitled to equal protections and rights under the laws of this
00:16:46.340 country. You do not believe that we deserve life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness, that we are
00:16:52.860 not really Americans to you simply because we may not look like you or share your beliefs.
00:16:59.500 So again, thank you for showing us the prejudice and hate that truly fills your heart and telling us
00:17:05.580 so proudly that although we may be your neighbor, we are not equally yours. Sincerely, your neighbors who
00:17:13.040 dare to be different. And then as if that were not enough, they have, P.S. If you believe yourself to be a
00:17:19.720 Christian, which we also assume is likely, thank you for further proving that you do not hold true
00:17:25.620 Christian values or follow the teachings of Christ, who preached love and acceptance for all neighbors.
00:17:32.680 We sure hope you enjoy the heat. Condemned to hell by your neighbors who say that they are certain
00:17:41.080 that you have hate in your heart and prejudice, that you don't care if they have life,
00:17:47.840 that you wouldn't extend them grace in time of need merely because you are showing political support
00:17:53.400 for the president and vice president of the United States. Give me a freaking break. Also,
00:17:59.400 how in the hell is someone to presume to know your faith just because you have a Trump sign?
00:18:04.780 And while it's true that there are a lot of Christians who support the president,
00:18:08.440 I know plenty of people who are Jews, who hold no faith at all, who have a variety of different
00:18:15.540 beliefs who also support the president. It's, I would say, pretty bigoted to just assume that
00:18:22.580 because someone is a Trump supporter, they aren't necessarily, you know, hateful or unkind or ungracious
00:18:29.600 or that they have any negative views to their neighbors. So it is just like the most passive
00:18:34.740 aggressive snowflake thing in the world to castigate someone just because they have a political sign in
00:18:40.620 their yard. And it tells us where we are in our politics today. You know, it used to be the case that
00:18:44.820 the left claimed that they were like the great defenders of free speech and the exchange of
00:18:50.700 ideas. Political speech is the most protected speech in our country. And it's not offensive
00:18:57.320 to put up a yard sign for the president of the United States to your neighbors. And the fact that
00:19:02.760 now the new like organizing mental doctrine of the left is that like if you happen to support Trump,
00:19:08.940 if you happen to back his policies or his candidacy, then you are necessarily a bigot and a racist and
00:19:15.860 a horrible person. That leads to this cancel culture that erodes our American values and ideals.
00:19:23.760 And I sure hope that we can be a little more neighborly despite our politics and our imperfections.
00:19:30.940 The peace deal and the normalizing of diplomatic relations between Israel and the United Arab
00:19:40.360 Emirates is really creating some concrete result. It's not just an on paper deal. It's leading to
00:19:48.480 better commerce, better trade. You've already seen the UAE team start to set up their footprint in
00:19:56.780 Israel so that diplomatic relations can exist in real time and in person to the greatest extent
00:20:02.740 possible. And BBC's got the story, the first flight from LL Airlines from Israel to the United Arab
00:20:09.940 Emirates has landed. And it just is true throughout human history that societies that engage in trade,
00:20:17.300 engage in commerce, travel to one another, work with one another, are less likely to go to war
00:20:23.220 with one another. Less war in the Middle East is obviously good for America. It's good for our ally Israel.
00:20:30.420 And it's great to see the historic deal between the UAE and Israel creating these results, creating this
00:20:37.360 travel, and hopefully creating a safer and more peaceful world.
00:20:45.680 Adele, the singer, is now a cultural appropriator. That's right, Breitbart has the story.
00:20:53.200 Adele apparently wore a bikini with the Jamaican flag along with some sort of dreadlock, cornrow
00:21:01.900 situation in her hair, and also a big Jamaican-looking feather plume over it. You'll have to check it out
00:21:09.760 on the link on our social media. But if you don't know what a cultural appropriator is, that is someone
00:21:15.060 who, I guess, wears the clothes, adopts the culture, engages in some sort of signal of the culture of
00:21:23.880 someone without the Woketopians blessing you with a sufficient amount of credibility
00:21:32.580 or understanding or background in that culture to be able to do so. So I think like the first time I
00:21:39.620 learned of cultural appropriation, it was the story where a girl wore a beautiful Chinese dress to prom
00:21:46.760 and posted pictures of that on social media and then was lamb blasted for Chinese cultural
00:21:52.440 appropriation. I mean, I don't know. I went to Florida State University, a college where a white
00:21:59.520 boy rides around in an Indian headdress and then throws a flaming spear into the 50-yard line to start
00:22:06.300 football games. That was not cultural appropriation. It was something that, frankly, the Seminole Indian
00:22:12.740 tribe took a great deal of pride in. They made the clothing and the wardrobe. They engage in commerce
00:22:20.440 and partnership with the university on health care, on cultural preservation, on a variety of other
00:22:27.060 things that I think enrich the connection with the Seminole Indian tribe and Florida State. But in this
00:22:33.580 particular case, when it is a fellow Woketopian, like Adele, getting busted for cultural appropriation,
00:22:40.320 it really raises this dynamic. You now have in the world of political correctness these witch hunters,
00:22:48.200 right? They've got to go out and find people who are violating the unwritten rules of political
00:22:53.960 correctness and they have to hunt them. And eventually, there are more witch hunters than
00:22:58.700 there are witches, right? And so you've got to sort of drown people all the same because you've got an
00:23:05.260 objective to demonstrate your wokeness by being critical of someone else's relative lack of
00:23:11.880 wokeness. And so here, Adele, not a conservative, not a supporter of the president, but under fire
00:23:19.180 from her fellow Woketopians because of the Jamaica bikini, the plume, and the cornrows.
00:23:26.700 Be best, everyone. I guess that's my advice to Adele and all those criticizing her.
