Summary

Western liberal democracies have been engaged in a narrative of political and social progress, believing themselves superior to all that came before. According to this story, the scientific revolution led to the Enlightenment, which produced new social technologies to replace the backward superstitions and traditions that once governed human relations. Armed with a more scientific and rational understanding of human affairs, these new technologies would free those who had once been subjects of the state. Popular sovereignty, rule of law, and constitutional government were supposed to protect the rights of the individual from the whims of capricious rulers. This ambitious project has now proven a failure, as democracies across the West seem in unison, creating an aristocracy of favored groups.

00:00:30.000 Western liberal democracies have been engaged in a narrative of political and social progress,
00:00:44.260 believing themselves superior to all that came before.
00:00:47.880 According to this story, the scientific revolution led to the Enlightenment,
00:00:51.920 which produced new social technologies to replace the backward superstitions
00:00:56.260 and traditions that once governed human relations.
00:00:58.880 Armed with a more scientific and rational understanding of human affairs,
00:01:04.300 these new political technologies would free those who had once been subjects of the state.
00:01:10.100 Popular sovereignty, rule of law, and constitutional government were supposed to protect
00:01:14.820 the rights of the individual from the whims of capricious rulers.
00:01:18.320 This ambitious project has now proven a failure, as democracies across the West seem to be
00:01:24.520 in unison, creating an aristocracy of favored groups.
00:01:28.780 In America, trans activists can storm state capitol buildings,
00:01:33.280 and BLM protesters can riot for weeks on end, while January 6th protesters rot in jail.
00:01:38.900 In Canada, transgenderists can punch their opponents in the face without penalty,
00:01:44.920 while police chuckle in approval.
00:01:46.460 In the United Kingdom, those praying silently outside abortion clinics are arrested,
00:01:52.660 while Muslim grooming gangs prey on women with little to no fear of reprisal.
00:01:57.280 These nations all share a tradition of Western liberal democratic government,
00:02:02.260 and also seem to have simultaneously developed a social class with special privileges,
00:02:08.000 and the ability to ignore the rule of law as long as they are punishing the political opponents
00:02:13.320 of the ruling elite.
00:02:15.020 For many, this feels like a radical shift in the way that Western nations are run,
00:02:19.680 but in truth, this has been happening for a long time and has been formalized in U.S. law for decades.

00:02:41.380 Affirmative action and disparate impact have warped the American legal system,
00:02:46.480 not only allowing bias, but in many cases legally mandating it
00:02:51.140 as long as the bias benefits groups that have been granted the status of victim.
00:02:56.320 Even when the practice is not formally mandated by law,
00:02:59.900 it's enforced culturally by institutions like corporations and universities.
00:03:05.120 Harvard is currently arguing in a Supreme Court case
00:03:08.160 that it must continue to use racial bias in its admissions
00:03:11.940 if it wishes to obtain a diverse student population.
00:03:15.060 The university's lawyers take for granted that labeling those groups
00:03:20.040 who are elevated through racial preference as disadvantaged
00:03:23.400 absolves the institution of any wrongdoing.
00:03:26.960 What many in the West never grasped was that the leftist concept of social progress
00:03:32.580 was always destined to dismantle classically liberal constitutional government.
00:03:37.860 The left is a coalition of groups who benefit from the destruction of natural hierarchies.
00:03:43.560 The organic limitations inherent in family, church, community, and even biological sex
00:03:50.160 are unacceptable barriers to the leftist conception of progress.
00:03:54.920 While legal equality was originally the stated goal,
00:03:58.900 when it failed to reliably produce equal outcomes,
00:04:02.080 there was no way the left was simply going to shrug,
00:04:04.920 assume this was the natural order of things, and go home.
00:04:07.900 Many conservatives attempt to hold the left accountable for the linguistic transition
00:04:13.380 from equality to equity, but this is a mistake,
00:04:16.720 because for progressives these terms were always one and the same.
00:04:21.560 In order to progress beyond the natural social hierarchies,
00:04:25.540 one must engineer society itself.
00:04:28.760 If legal equality is achieved, but inequality of outcome persists,
00:04:34.140 then the only remaining option is to privilege some and suppress others
00:04:38.560 in hopes of deriving the desired result.
00:04:42.140 Legal equality must be dismantled because it failed to generate the unstated expectation,
00:04:48.640 equality of outcome.
00:04:50.520 This episode is brought to you by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute.
00:04:54.140 The Intercollegiate Studies Institute is a conservative nonprofit
00:04:56.960 dedicated to educating the next great American.
00:04:59.480 ISI understands that conservative and right-of-center students feel isolated
00:05:04.160 on college campuses and compelled to defend their reputation and dignity
00:05:07.720 while seeking to carve out a brighter future.
00:05:10.600 ISI has a variety of different content, events, internships, and fellowships
00:05:14.740 geared towards helping students and opening up career opportunities.
00:05:18.520 ISI offers graduate students and entry-level journalists
00:05:21.200 the opportunity to receive fellowships and secure internships.
00:05:25.100 Nate Hockman, who's been a guest on this show multiple times,
00:05:27.680 got his start on National Review through ISI.
00:05:30.720 And he's just one of many journalists and academics
00:05:32.860 who were able to start their careers with the help of ISI.
00:05:36.220 This spring, ISI is going to be hosting a debate
00:05:38.060 between Michael Knowles and Deidre McCloskey
00:05:40.000 on the subject of transgenderism that will be live-streamed on YouTube.
00:05:43.900 In the fall, everyone's favorite Fox News host, Tucker Carlson,
00:05:47.120 will be giving the keynote address at ISI's annual gala.
00:05:50.480 On all issues, both economic and cultural,
00:05:52.780 ISI wants their students to know
00:05:54.460 that they're not shying away from the problems facing our country,
00:05:57.180 because letting the left win
00:05:59.040 is a pathetic way to watch civilization die.

00:06:10.360 At first, people didn't object to special privileges
00:06:13.980 being granted to those who were characterized as disadvantaged.
00:06:17.160 Most Americans are generous and kind people
00:06:21.100 who would genuinely like to see others succeed
00:06:23.920 and are happy to help those who have ended up
00:06:26.580 on the bottom of the social pyramid.
00:06:29.020 This is especially true when it comes to the civil rights movement,
00:06:33.020 which many Americans saw as a noble correction of a deep wrong
00:06:36.580 that had previously existed in their society.
00:06:38.940 The population at large was willing to grant a form of emergency power to the movement,
00:06:45.280 often ignoring the violation of legislative procedure
00:06:48.520 and prior understanding of constitutional rights
00:06:51.200 in order to fix a historical wrong.
00:06:54.400 Activists took notice,
00:06:55.760 and it quickly became standard practice
00:06:57.620 for groups who had no claim
00:06:59.180 to the specific historical legacy of the civil rights movement
00:07:02.380 to join themselves to its narrative.
00:07:04.100 Any group that did so successfully
00:07:06.580 gained access to the super-constitutional framework
00:07:09.760 and moral authority granted by the civil rights movement.
00:07:13.480 As this trend continued
00:07:15.080 and more traditional understandings
00:07:17.060 of religion and American identity collapsed,
00:07:19.720 the civil rights narrative took their place.
00:07:22.760 America became defined by its ability
00:07:25.060 to discover human rights
00:07:26.620 for increasingly obscure minority groups
00:07:29.400 and export those rights to the rest of the world.
00:07:31.880 Instead of going to war for security interests,
00:07:35.700 America and the wider West
00:07:37.320 now go to war on behalf of democracy and LGBTQ rights.
00:07:42.240 Anyone who opposes those rights
00:07:43.960 basically opposes the new Western religion
00:07:46.580 and is probably in league with both Hitler and Putin.
00:07:50.360 The wrong side of history is a very scary place to be.
00:07:54.520 Each of these increasingly obscure social minorities
00:07:57.920 are grafted onto the civil rights narrative
00:08:00.320 and given a quasi-sacred victim status
00:08:03.040 which grants them access to the special privileges
00:08:05.460 that lay beyond the rule of law and constitutional order.
00:08:09.380 Eventually, society reaches a tipping point
00:08:11.920 where the incentives for being an oppressed minority
00:08:14.480 are greater than being someone
00:08:16.220 who is naturally elevated
00:08:17.680 due to the legal equality granted
00:08:19.720 under rule of law and the constitutional order.
00:08:23.460 Couple that fact
00:08:24.420 with the almost deistic elevation through victimhood
00:08:27.480 and the drive to achieve this new aristocratic status
00:08:30.660 becomes overwhelming.
00:08:32.460 I mean, who wouldn't want to be on the right side of history
00:08:35.140 while also getting to punch people they hate in the face?
00:08:39.200 This has brought us to a very strange place
00:08:41.620 where Western regimes must continually parrot
00:08:44.040 the rhetoric of freedom and constitutional rights
00:08:46.720 while exercising an ever-increasing level
00:08:49.600 of totalitarian state control
00:08:51.620 to impose their artificial and inverted social hierarchy.
00:08:55.980 Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau
00:08:58.000 lecture countries like Iran or Russia
00:09:00.460 about human rights violations
00:09:01.920 while resting their own political opponents,
00:09:04.420 stealing bank accounts from protesters,
00:09:06.900 and jailing meme makers.
00:09:09.240 The West now values the maintenance
00:09:11.080 of a totally artificial social hierarchy
00:09:13.960 over its commitment to legal equality,
00:09:16.760 but this feat of social engineering
00:09:18.400 is by its very nature incredibly fragile.
00:09:21.920 The weight of the inverted social pyramid
00:09:24.180 makes it increasingly unstable,
00:09:26.300 and the social engineers who erected it
00:09:28.080 must search relentlessly
00:09:29.560 for any remaining barriers to power
00:09:31.900 which they can dismantle.
00:09:34.040 Progressives hope that by securing enough power,
00:09:36.600 the state will be able to preserve
00:09:37.960 this artificial construct
00:09:39.620 before it comes crashing down around them.
00:09:42.680 The West has a vast amount of wealth
00:09:44.820 and can fight for a very long time,
00:09:47.200 but those that make war on reality
00:09:49.120 will always find that it ends in disaster.
00:09:52.780 Maintaining an aristocracy of victimhood
00:09:55.140 will inevitably cost more social capital
00:09:57.700 than any civilization can produce.
00:10:00.760 Let us all hope that progressive hubris
00:10:03.020 is brought to heel
00:10:04.120 before that final bill comes due.
