The Ben Shapiro Show

Ep. 213 - Leftists Keep Pushing Americans To Trump

Summary

The problem on America s college campuses is not just snowflake college students. Since the 1960's, there have always been lots of young people insistent on quashing free speech and destroying campus freedom. But just as in the 1960s, it actually takes cowardly administrators to make a leftist fascist dream come true. That was the story of DePaul University on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday evening, protesters tried to shut down a lecture I was giving at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and police were told to stand down by the administration. This is the rioter's veto, and it only exists thanks to the cowardice of administrators. Ben Shapiro's full response to the situation at DePaul and the UW in Madison is a must-listen, if you want to know what's going on in America's colleges and universities and why you should be worried about what snowflakes are trying to do to our freedom of speech and freedom of the press on our campuses. 00:00:00.000 So, on Tuesday evening, I was nearly arrested by security at DePaul University.
00:00:04.000 My crime?
00:00:05.000 I set foot on campus.
00:00:06.000 On Wednesday evening, protesters tried to shut down a lecture I was giving at University of Wisconsin in Madison, and police officers were told to stand down by the administration.
00:00:15.000 Now, the problem on America's college campuses is not just the snowflake college students.
00:00:20.000 Since the 1960s, there have always been lots of young people insistent on quashing free speech and destroying campus freedom.
00:00:26.000 But just as in the 1960s, it actually takes cowardly administrators to make a leftist fascist dream come true.
00:00:33.000 That was the story of DePaul.
00:00:34.000 Months ago, the alt-right popularizer Milo visited DePaul, where protesters greeted him by taking over the stage and screaming at him and threatening violence.
00:00:41.000 And security didn't do anything.
00:00:43.000 The administration responded by banning both Yiannopoulos and me.
00:00:46.000 They added me because students at Cal State Los Angeles had nearly rioted when I visited.
00:00:51.000 This week, I showed up at DePaul at the invitation of the Young America's Foundation group on campus.
00:00:56.000 The administration made clear that they'd shut down the event if I was the speaker, so the group attempted to register me as a guest.
00:01:02.000 The administration blocked that, so we attempted to register me as a member of fellow speaker Christina Hofstammer's team.
00:01:08.000 The administration blocked that, too.
00:01:10.000 In an unprecedented move,
00:01:12.000 Expecting my arrival, they mandated that everybody wear special wristbands and be screened by metal detectors so they could ensure that I didn't end up in the hall.
00:01:20.000 When I showed up, I was confronted by about 30 security guards from the university.
00:01:23.000 There were five or six local cops present, as well as the sheriff from Cook County, to facilitate an arrest if security decided to move on me.
00:01:31.000 And they did openly threaten me with arrest if I attempted to attend Christina's lecture.
00:01:35.000 You can see the video at dailywire.com.
00:01:37.000 Here's the amazing thing.
00:01:38.000 There were no protesters.
00:01:40.000 None.
00:01:40.000 Not a single one.
00:01:41.000 But the administration was so intense on placating protesters who didn't even show up, they banned me personally from entering a campus to give a speech on free speech.
00:01:51.000 By the way, that was just the beginning.
00:01:52.000 Last night at UW-Madison, student protesters stood up every few minutes and began screaming, safety and shame to disrupt.
00:01:59.000 I'll show you the video in just a few minutes.
00:02:01.000 They'd been planning it for days.
00:02:02.000 They even had a secret Facebook group titled F White Supremacy.
00:02:05.000 Interrupting Ben Shapiro.
00:02:07.000 Why didn't security clear them out, even when they marched down to the front of the stage and attempted to block me physically from the audience?
00:02:13.000 Well, because the administration had told university police not to remove the protesters at all.
00:02:17.000 And if they had removed the protesters, they should shut down the entire thing.
00:02:21.000 Getting this?
00:02:21.000 So if the protesters disturb things...
00:02:23.000 The police can't remove them, and if they do remove them, they have to remove everybody.
00:02:27.000 That would mean 20 protesters could simply stick around, and by doing so, prevent 450 people who'd spent all day waiting from hearing a lecture on free speech.
00:02:35.000 As UW student Jordan Zadra said, this mentality gives protesters a license to shut down any speech they don't like.
00:02:41.000 This is the rioter's veto, and it only exists thanks to the cowardice of administrators.
00:02:47.000 I'm Ben Shapiro.
00:02:47.000 This is The Ben Shapiro Show.
00:02:52.000 And we open, of course, by saying hello to our advertisers over at Texture.com.

00:03:41.000 And so texture.com has made it significantly more easy for me to get all the articles that I want to read.
00:03:47.000 We're good.
00:04:02.000 So here we go.
00:04:03.000 All right, lots to get to.
00:04:05.000 So we start with my experience as a University of Wisconsin
00:04:28.000 Last night in Madison.
00:04:44.000 We found out hours in advance there were going to be a bunch of protest groups.
00:04:47.000 The rumor was there were going to be two Black Lives Matter groups and there was also going to be a white supremacist group, which has been about the state of my ear.
00:04:54.000 And so they told us all this and they told us they were only assigning three cops, right?
00:04:58.000 Three cops for like 500 people and a bunch of protesters.
00:05:02.000 If this sounds like a bad idea,
00:05:03.000 That's because it is a terrible idea.
00:05:05.000 It's truly an awful idea.
00:05:06.000 And it was designed to be an awful idea.
00:05:09.000 As I say, the administration told the cops to stand back and let all of this happen.
00:05:14.000 And they said that if I said that people had to be moved out or if there was an attempt to make an arrest, they would have to actually shut down the entire event and empty the hall.
00:05:21.000 So get rid of 450 people because 20 people decided to disrupt.
00:05:25.000 Well, things didn't go precisely how the protesters wanted.
00:05:28.000 They started standing up and shouting and interrupting.
00:05:30.000 They walked down to the front of the stage.
00:05:33.000 But the crowd was not having any of it, and neither was I. Here is a montage of some of the better moments from last night's lecture at University of Wisconsin at Madison.
00:05:42.000 It's time... The folks... In case you hadn't noticed, the folks with the swastikas aren't too nice to my type.
00:05:53.000 And by the way, I'm fully aware of this private Facebook page titled, F White Supremacy Interrupting Ben Shapiro.
00:05:58.000 Well... With all due respect, F you right back, gang.
00:06:04.000 F white supremacy!
00:06:09.000 Get out!
00:06:10.000 You're babying!
00:06:11.000 You're babying!
00:06:27.000 Shame!
00:06:28.000 Shame!
00:06:29.000 It's like Game of Thrones.
00:06:31.000 Do I get undressed and walk down the aisle?
00:06:34.000 Decency!
00:06:35.000 Shame!
00:06:36.000 Decency!
00:06:38.000 Decency!
00:06:39.000 Decency!
00:06:39.000 Three streets matter!
00:06:42.000 Three streets matter!
00:06:43.000 Safety!
00:06:44.000 Safety!
00:06:45.000 Safety!
00:06:46.000 Safety!
00:06:48.000 Okay, so it was good times, as you can see all around.
00:06:50.000 Eventually, they left.
00:06:50.000 The double flip-off was in response to the fact that all of the protesters, as they were leaving, were shouting, "'F' white supremacy," and flipping off everybody in the hall, including me.
00:06:59.000 So it was just a joy.
00:07:01.000 I did enjoy it.
00:07:02.000 The students there are fantastic.
00:07:04.000 They were really good natured.
00:07:05.000 And it does tell you something about why the Trump phenomenon happened.
00:07:09.000 It really does.
00:07:09.000 What it tells you is that
00:07:11.000 People don't care about the response nearly as much as they care about the fact that the left can't control itself.
00:07:17.000 The left simply cannot control itself.
00:07:19.000 They're out of their minds.
00:07:20.000 And because of that, people have reacted to that by saying, screw all you people, we're not going to do anything you want.
00:07:25.000 Even if somebody is a bad person, like Trump was during the primaries and the general, even if someone says ridiculous things, you don't have the right to stand on ceremony since you've been saying this stuff about everybody, including Mitt Romney.
00:07:36.000 So you keep saying to us, F you, you're white supremacist.
00:07:39.000 Well, F you all and we'll elect Trump just to show you.
00:07:42.000 Now, do I think that that's the best response?
00:07:44.000 No, I don't.
00:07:44.000 But I do think that it's a justifiable and under, well, understandable is a better word, an understandable response by people.
00:07:51.000 And I have that same response.
00:07:52.000 I do.
00:07:53.000 I have the same feeling of you guys can't control yourselves.
00:07:56.000 You can't engage in the nature of Western civilization.
00:07:59.000 You can't do any of it.
00:08:01.000 And then you turn around and you blame us when things go wrong.
00:08:04.000 You can all go to hell.
00:08:05.000 And that was sort of the feeling last night.
00:08:07.000 There was a real feeling of brotherhood inside the room between all of the people who stayed and toughed it out.
00:08:11.000 This is like a 25-minute thing.
00:08:13.000 I mean, they shut it down.
00:08:14.000 They were yelling.
00:08:15.000 They were screaming.
00:08:15.000 They were shouting shame.
00:08:16.000 They were also shouting safety at one point.
00:08:18.000 When they were chanting safety, I said a couple of things.
00:08:21.000 They chanted safety and I said,
00:08:23.000 And number one, you are safe.
00:08:25.000 You're all making trouble right now.
00:08:26.000 Nobody's punching you.
00:08:27.000 That's America.
00:08:28.000 That's great.
00:08:29.000 And then they continue to shout safety, at which point I just said, I don't understand who farted.
00:08:32.000 But in any case, you can see why this drove the Trump movement.
00:08:35.000 You can see why it drove the right to victory in this election.
00:08:38.000 And you can see why, if the left keeps playing this game, they're playing with fire politically.
00:08:42.000 Kellyanne Conway, I think, actually summed it up pretty well.
00:08:44.000 She's the spokesperson, obviously, for the Trump campaign.
00:08:47.000 And here's what she had to say.
00:08:49.000 But you know, we're just treating these adolescents and these millennials like precious snowflakes.
00:08:55.000 I'm just amazed how many texts and emails I'm receiving as one person of all these professors saying you don't have to take the test, you can get college credit if you protest.
00:09:05.000 What's the worst thing that can happen to these millennials?
00:09:08.000 That Donald Trump will make good on his promise to create 25 million new jobs?
00:09:12.000 That he'll unleash energy investment?
00:09:13.000 That he'll get rid of the Obamacare penalty on day one so that you're not forced to buy government-run healthcare?
00:09:20.000 Okay, so, look, I think that she's exaggerating the case for all the things that Trump's gonna do for millennials, but, and I understand why millennials don't like Trump, you know, they don't like the language that he uses or the things that he says, but, the precious snowflake idea, we're just gonna shut it down, we can't go to class, we can't participate in normal society, we can't actually take tests, we have to get out of essays, all of this is a bunch of crap, and people react to it as you would expect them to, which is, grow up.
00:09:44.000 Grow up.
00:09:45.000 Get a life.
00:09:45.000 Grow up.
00:09:46.000 Stop being such babies.
00:09:47.000 And that's totally understandable.
00:09:49.000 It really is.
00:09:50.000 And Ted Cruz gets it right, too.
00:09:51.000 Cruz was on TV yesterday, and he said that all these protests against Donald Trump, they're showing that hypocrisy is on rank display from the left.
00:09:59.000 We have seen hypocrisy on rank display from the left.
00:10:03.000 All of the folks who jumped on their high horse and were lecturing to President-elect Trump, you've got to accept the results of the election.
00:10:11.000 Look, these are now the idiots that are protesting in the street and laying their bodies down in front of cars and disrupting traffic.
00:10:20.000 We had an election.
00:10:21.000 The people spoke.
00:10:23.000 Democracy is a powerful, powerful way of choosing.
00:10:29.000 I think Americans across this country, and I think this is across the line of Republicans, of Democrats, of Independents, of Libertarians, I think Americans are excited about the opportunity to have an administration that actually protects our rights, that brings back jobs.
00:10:46.000 Okay, and Cruz is right that, of course, the people did speak and these people are making trouble.
00:10:51.000 It's just driving more people into Trump's open arms.
00:10:53.000 I mean, as I said yesterday, I, who really do not like Steve Bannon, am now in the position of defending Steve Bannon because of the media overrage.
00:11:00.000 I, who did not vote for Donald Trump, am in the position of rooting hard for Donald Trump to stop these kinds of people because, come on, this is ridiculous.
00:11:07.000 This is ridiculous.
00:11:08.000 You shut down traffic.
00:11:09.000 You act like babies.
00:11:11.000 And last night, I actually led off the speech by saying, I brought a diaper and some safety pins.
00:11:15.000 I said, you guys want to wear safety pins?
00:11:16.000 I brought something that you can use also, and it's a diaper.
00:11:19.000 And I said, you know, the first thing is, if you want to have a discussion, let's have a discussion.
00:11:23.000 If you want to act like babies, please leave.
00:11:25.000 I said, don't act like babies.
00:11:26.000 And the first thing they do is they start interrupting and shouting like my two-year-old.
00:11:30.000 All of this is deeply frustrating.
00:11:31.000 All of it is deeply upsetting.
00:11:33.000 The fact the administration goes along with it is also even more upsetting.
00:11:36.000 These are people in position of power who should know better.
00:11:39.000 The rest of the state of Wisconsin looks at Madison and they say, you people are out of your minds.
00:11:43.000 No wonder we're going to vote for Donald Trump.
00:11:45.000 And it's the entire left now.
00:11:46.000 The entire left has reacted to Trump with such insanity.
00:11:49.000 And I think they probably would have reacted about 70% the same if it had been somebody like Cruz or Rubio.
00:11:54.000 But the fact that they're reacting the way they are to Trump
00:11:57.000 It actually is just making people more likely to ignore them.
00:12:00.000 Vincente Fox, the former president of Mexico, just a few months ago, he was cursing at Trump.
00:12:05.000 He's not going to build, we're not going to build your effing wall.
00:12:07.000 And now he's calling Trump illegitimate.
00:12:09.000 Do you think that drives Americans into or away from the arms of Donald Trump?
00:12:13.000 How could people in power in Mexico do business with him?
00:12:17.000 Right now, I think he's an illegitimate president of the United States.
00:12:23.000 Why is he illegitimate?
00:12:24.000 He just won an election.
00:12:26.000 He would have to legitimize.
00:12:28.000 He didn't won the general election.
00:12:30.000 So he's got too many people against him and they have shown out on the streets.
00:12:35.000 But anyway, in Mexico, we are also, we can be rude also.
00:12:40.000 As I said, we're strong now.
00:12:42.000 We're going to defend our people, wherever they are in Mexico or outside of Mexico in the United States.
00:12:49.000 We're not going to let this guy to offend them anymore, to offend their dignity and more so to deny the enormous contribution they make to US economy.
00:13:03.000 Okay, so you see Vincente Fox saying, we're going to stand up for all the illegal immigrants, and we're going to stand up against Donald Trump.
00:13:08.000 And Americans go, why do we want to hear from the former president of Mexico about why you're going to stand up for illegal immigrants in the United States when Mexico is making a lot of money off of remittances from illegal citizens living in the United States?
00:13:22.000 Why is that a good thing?
00:13:23.000 By the way, it's also funny to watch Vincente Fox pretend that Donald Trump is the only Bulgarian, when literally right behind him is a portrait of Vincente Fox and his wife.
00:13:32.000 I've never actually been in a place where I wanted someone to paint my portrait, but if I did, I probably wouldn't hang it behind me during interviews.
00:13:39.000 It seems kind of weird.
00:13:41.000 Meanwhile, the Democrats continue to demonstrate their hypocrisy on every level.
00:13:45.000 Josh Earnest over at the White House, he's already ripping into Trump.
00:13:48.000 He's saying that Trump is undermining our NATO alliances.
00:13:51.000 Now, there's truth to this.
00:13:51.000 I mean, Donald Trump spends a lot of the primaries talking about how NATO, the members of NATO weren't paying up and that we would abandon them if they didn't pay their fair share.
00:13:59.000 What people are forgetting, by the way, is that when you say to countries, not just in NATO, but across the world, that if you guys don't pay us more money, then we're going to abandon you, China is willing to pay them that money in Southeast Asia in order to make them allies.
00:14:12.000 Russia is willing to bribe countries in order to exert influence.
00:14:15.000 We're not the only players in this game.
00:14:17.000 It's not just a matter of you pay us money or we'll abandon you.
00:14:20.000 There are other players who are going to seek to fill that vacuum.
00:14:22.000 But Josh Earnest says that supporting our NATO allies is a longstanding tradition.
00:14:26.000 He just can't believe that Trump wouldn't do it.
00:14:28.000 President Obama has made the case for is the long-standing, strong, bipartisan tradition of strong relations between the United States and our NATO allies.
00:14:38.000 And President Obama certainly dedicated a significant portion of his presidency to making sure that that relationship was deepened, that that relationship was strengthened in a way that had enormous and significant
00:14:49.000 Thank you.
00:15:02.000 Okay, and of course that's not even true.
00:15:03.000 I mean, Obama has undermined NATO routinely.
00:15:05.000 He didn't do anything when Ukraine was invaded by Russia.
00:15:07.000 He didn't do anything to defend the Baltic states when Putin is threatening them.
00:15:11.000 He removed the missile defense system from Poland, even though they were asking for it.
00:15:15.000 He removed it from the Czech Republic, even though they were asking for it.
00:15:18.000 The idea that Putin, that Obama has stood up for NATO, that he's some sort of hawk on foreign policy, is just laughable.
00:15:24.000 Today, Obama was overseas meeting with Angela Merkel, and he was spending time talking about how Trump needs to stand up to Russia.
00:15:31.000 From the guy who's been bending over backwards for Russia.
00:15:33.000 From the guy who drew a red line with the Syrians and then backed off of it and let Russia take over the place.
00:15:38.000 From the guy who's let Russia, again, take over Crimea.
00:15:41.000 From the guy who's allowed Vladimir Putin to become a world figure again.
00:15:45.000 That guy is lecturing Trump.
00:15:46.000 And so normal people look at this and they say, you don't get to lecture anybody.
00:15:49.000 Go screw yourselves.
00:15:51.000 I really think that
00:15:52.000 Trump is, and we'll see what he becomes, but for now, what Trump is, is a giant pulsating middle finger right at the left, right at the heart of the left.
00:16:01.000 And they deserve it.
00:16:02.000 They do deserve it.
00:16:02.000 There is justice for the left in the fact that Donald Trump is president.
00:16:05.000 Does that mean that he's going to be wonderful?
00:16:07.000 I don't know yet.
00:16:07.000 I don't think so.
00:16:08.000 That's why I didn't vote for him.
00:16:09.000 But we will find out, and we'll find out in January.
00:16:11.000 We'll get to some of his cabinet picks and what he's doing right now, some of which is very clever.
00:16:15.000 We'll talk about that in just a few minutes.
00:16:17.000 But the left continues to just make mockeries of themselves.
00:16:19.000 Here's the ACLU director.
00:16:20.000 And he says that opposing Donald Trump is going to be what the ACLU is all about.
00:16:25.000 Well, he's going to try.
00:16:26.000 And he might get part of the way through, and then we'll definitely claw him back.
00:16:30.000 Let's take the ban on immigrants, or the deportation of immigrants.
00:16:32.000 11 million people he wants to deport.
00:16:34.000 On Sunday's 60 Minutes, he said he wants to focus on 2 to 3 million of the immigrants who broke the law.
00:16:39.000 Immediately.
00:16:40.000 Yeah.
00:16:40.000 How's he going to find them?
00:16:42.000 The criminals are not just lined up in some database who happen to be immigrants.
00:16:46.000 He's going to have to comb through immigrant communities.
00:16:48.000 How is he going to have to do that?
00:16:49.000 Through dragnet searches.
00:16:51.000 Through unlawful searches and seizures.
00:16:53.000 Do you think the Department of Homeland Security is going to say, oh, you undocumented immigrant, let me see if you're a criminal.
00:16:59.000 Oh, no criminal?
00:17:00.000 Walk free.
00:17:01.000 You think they're going to let the undocumented immigrants who don't have a criminal records just slip away?
00:17:07.000 We're in for the fight of our lives.
00:17:10.000 And when the President-elect said on Sunday that he's still going to try to deport two to three million people, he's talking dragnet, unconstitutional searches and seizures that will violate the Fourth Amendment, the Fifth Amendment, the Fourteenth Amendment.
00:17:23.000 And what's going to be so intense for us is that we have to document those cases.
00:17:26.000 This is not something you can bring a class-action lawsuit on behalf of all the undocumented immigrants.
00:17:31.000 You have to go and show the cases and the fact patterns.
00:17:34.000 Talk to the clients.
00:17:35.000 I don't even listen to Anthony Romero lecture us about legality.
00:17:41.000 The ACLU is a hypocritical organization.
00:17:43.000 They spent the entire Obama administration doing nothing about Obama's violation of civil liberties.
00:17:48.000 Everything from the IRS targeting conservatives to the DOJ targeting the Associated Press.
00:17:52.000 And the ACLU had virtually nothing to say about any of this.
00:17:55.000 Trump has not talked about dragnets, at least not in a while.
00:17:58.000 When Trump says he wants to deport criminal illegal immigrants, he's talking about the same people Obama says he wants to deport.
00:18:03.000 I didn't see the ACLU talking about how Obama couldn't deport criminals because he'd have to impose a dragnet.
00:18:09.000 They're reading into Trump something that he never said.
00:18:11.000 But again, it's all hypocrisy.
00:18:13.000 It's all over the top.
00:18:14.000 The left cannot just deal with the fact.
00:18:17.000 I don't know.
00:18:32.000 I don't think so.
00:18:54.000 They spoke with some of the founders of this company.
