The Ben Shapiro Show

Ep. 261 - Is Destroying Trump A Winning Strategy?

Summary

Kellyanne Conway accused of lacking respect after putting her feet on Oval Office couch. Twitter freaks out. Even the Washington Post calls it a tempest in a teapot and equates it to Bill Clinton s sexual activity in the Oval Office. But that s not quite the same thing as... Monica Lewinsky kneeling under the desk or having sex on top of President Clinton s desk, as Secret Service members reported. In other words, if the biggest problem the media have with Kellyanne Conner is where she puts her feet, they re just awful at their jobs. 00:00:54.000 Show some class.
00:00:55.000 Kellyanne Conway accused of lacking respect after putting feet up on Oval Office couch.
00:00:59.000 Oh no!
00:01:01.000 The horror!
00:01:02.000 Kellyanne Conway put her feet...
00:01:03.000 On the couch!
00:01:04.000 Like a human!
00:01:05.000 Even the Washington Post's Chris Chilesa got this one right.
00:01:08.000 He said, quote, This tempest in a teapot is, in a word, dumb.
00:01:11.000 In two words, incredibly dumb.
00:01:13.000 Of course, Chilesa then goes on to get one thing wrong.
00:01:15.000 He equates Conway's conduct with that of President Clinton in the Oval Office, which neglects a few facts.
00:01:19.000 First, Kellyanne Conway is not the president.
00:01:22.000 Second, Bill Clinton's intern performed oral sex on him in the Oval Office.
00:01:26.000 Kellyanne Conway kneeling on a couch isn't quite the same thing as Monica Lewinsky kneeling under the desk.
00:01:30.000 Or having sex on top of the Oval Office desk with Clinton, as Secret Service members reported.
00:01:35.000 As for the generalized outrage over feet on the furniture in the Oval Office, President Obama routinely put his feet on the resolute desk, a gift from Queen Victoria to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1890, but so did George W. Bush and Gerald Ford.
00:01:47.000 In other words, everybody needs to calm down.
00:01:49.000 If the biggest problem the media have with Kellyanne Conway is where she puts her feet in the Oval Office, they are just awful at their jobs.
00:01:55.000 I'm Ben Shapiro.
00:01:56.000 This is The Ben Shapiro Show.

00:02:06.000 We'll go through that and talk about what's good and what's bad.
00:02:09.000 And it will also talk about whether the Democrats are smart to hitch their entire political future to bashing Donald Trump.
00:02:16.000 Whether that's a winning strategy or a losing strategy.
00:02:18.000 There are arguments both ways.

00:03:40.000 Okay, so we begin today with the media.
00:03:43.000 The media...
00:03:44.000 Obviously are overreaching right now and the biggest advantage that Donald Trump has in the political debate is clearly the insanity of the media because he goes out there and he bashes the media and everybody who is on the right side of the aisle implicitly loves this.
00:03:58.000 We all love this because the media have it coming for 20 years, 20 long years, 30 years.
00:04:02.000 I mean going all the way back to Ronald Reagan.
00:04:05.000 Going back to Nixon, the media have been far to the left and they have unfairly targeted Republicans.
00:04:10.000 Some targeting is fair, some is not, but the fact that Trump is striking back at the media, it works well for him.
00:04:16.000 It works particularly well for him when the media continue to overreach and make themselves look insane.
00:04:20.000 The left and the media have decided the only way the left is going to regain power is simply by attacking Trump, attacking Trump, attacking Trump.
00:04:26.000 Now I think what's in their mind
00:04:28.000 Because they think that they're going to do to Trump what they did to George W. Bush.
00:04:31.000 They think that if they can just polarize Bush enough to get Nancy Pelosi and Obama in, they can polarize Trump enough to get Cory Booker or Elizabeth Warren in in four years.
00:04:40.000 But this neglects a couple of facts.
00:04:41.000 First, George W. Bush actually had to do some pretty bad things as president in order to lose his approval rating and watch it plummet.
00:04:48.000 Presidents who have over a 40% approval rating have a legit shot at reelection.
00:04:52.000 If you're below 40 percent, basically you're toast.
00:04:55.000 Trump right now is anywhere from 44 to 50 percent.
00:04:58.000 According to Rasmussen, a little bit above 50 percent in terms of approval rating.
00:05:02.000 If he sticks in that range, he'll have a legit shot at re-election.
00:05:05.000 And in order for a president to really drop below that range, he has to do something really bad.
00:05:08.000 And usually that means some sort of economic recession or a war that is prosecuted poorly.
00:05:13.000 George H.W.
00:05:14.000 Bush.
00:05:14.000 George H.W.
00:05:15.000 Bush was riding really high.
00:05:16.000 He was in like the 80s after the Gulf War.
00:05:19.000 And then there was an economic recession.
00:05:20.000 He plummeted down into the 30s.
00:05:21.000 George W. was in the 50s for the vast majority of his first term.
00:05:25.000 After 9-11, he was in the 90s.
00:05:27.000 After the Iraq War, he was in the 60s.
00:05:29.000 He basically spent most of his first term hovering around 55-56% and then it was only after his re-election when the Iraq war really started to go south before the surge that his approval ratings dumped and tanked for the last time and then there was a recession so he had the double whammy and he ended up in the 20s.
00:05:45.000 Right now, Trump isn't involved in any long-standing war.
00:05:49.000 You know, Afghanistan is still going on, but that's really not considered his war.
00:05:52.000 He hasn't started a war that's going badly and the economy is doing pretty well.
00:05:55.000 So long as those two things hold true, attacking Trump isn't going to do a lot for the media, but that's not stopping them.
00:06:00.000 They think that if they just attack Trump, attack Trump, that will alleviate their responsibility to not suck at their jobs.
00:06:06.000 And if the left keeps attacking Trump, they won't have to run Democrats who aren't insane.
00:06:10.000 So, this is what you see from the media.
00:06:11.000 So, Mika Brzezinski over at MSNBC, she says that Trump is clearly trying to create a dictatorship.
00:06:16.000 Again, over the top.
00:06:18.000 Spicer defended the decision to limit the press.
00:06:21.000 I think that we have shown an abundance of accessibility.
00:06:24.000 We've brought more reporters into this process, and the idea that every time that every single person can't get their question answered or fit in a room, they're excluding people.
00:06:32.000 We've actually gone above and beyond with making ourselves, our team, and our briefing room more accessible than probably any prior administration.
00:06:39.000 So I think you can take that to the bank.
00:06:43.000 So there's a different Spicer that we have for you.
00:06:47.000 Back in December, here he is.
00:06:51.000 We have a respect for the press when it comes to the government, that that is something that you can't ban an entity from.
00:07:02.000 Conservative, liberal or otherwise, I think that's what makes a democracy a democracy versus a dictatorship.
00:07:13.000 Just let that marinate.
00:07:19.000 I mean, so is that where we're at?
00:07:24.000 Anybody want to participate?
00:07:26.000 I mean, he's just described himself.
00:07:30.000 70 days may be a long time in his mind.
00:07:31.000 That was 70 days ago.
00:07:34.000 Are they trying to create a dictatorship?
00:07:36.000 I mean, I'm not joking and I'm not angry.
00:07:39.000 Okay, I'm not joking.
00:07:40.000 I'm not angry.
00:07:41.000 Are they trying to create a dictatorship?
00:07:42.000 If they are, this is the worst dictatorship ever.
00:07:44.000 Okay, honestly, like, I think people are right to be afraid of authoritarian presidents, but so far, everybody seems pretty able to criticize him.
00:07:52.000 And dictatorships usually don't have Mika Brzezinski on there talking about how dictatorship is being created as a typical matter, and Brzezinski hasn't been banned from the air.
00:07:59.000 But again, the media have to overreach because they think that if they destroy Trump,
00:08:03.000 Then they are going to destroy the Republican Party.
00:08:04.000 What they figure is that the Republican Party has seen a major upswing since 2010, thanks in large part to Barack Obama.
00:08:10.000 They're dominant across the country, in localities, in states.
00:08:13.000 They're dominant in the federal government.
00:08:15.000 But now they've tethered their wagon to Donald Trump.
00:08:17.000 So if they burn Donald Trump down, the wagon will burn too.
00:08:19.000 So they're going to focus all their fire on Donald Trump.
00:08:21.000 Chris Matthews is doing the same thing.
00:08:23.000 He says, I don't understand, why would anybody believe Trump after years of... Chris Matthews, he's a saint!
00:08:27.000 Get up, come out of the shoe, come in here, I'll wrinkle, don't even know what I'm doing, and then I just talk, I say things, and people watch it sometimes, but it's MSNBC, so not too many people.
00:08:36.000 Kathleen, what do you think?
00:08:37.000 Go!
00:08:38.000 News, early evening news analysis and opinion.
00:08:41.000 He doesn't go after lefties.
00:08:42.000 He doesn't go after center lefties.
00:08:44.000 He goes after people producing news on the front page.
00:08:47.000 Hard-working enterprise reporting.
00:08:49.000 That's who he's going after.
00:08:50.000 Have you noticed?
00:08:52.000 That's certainly the case here, but you know,
00:08:54.000 To your point, it's sort of an element here of, you know, he's looking for an enemy.
00:08:58.000 This is somebody who spent his entire career in negotiations.
00:09:00.000 You can't have a negotiation with one party.
00:09:02.000 I mean, you can't have a superhero without a villain.
00:09:04.000 There's an element of like... Why would anybody believe Trump when Trump spent years saying that Barack Obama was an illegal alien?
00:09:10.000 His supporters believe him.
00:09:10.000 Why would they believe when they know he was wrong about the big thing he ran on for five years?
00:09:14.000 Why would they believe he's got some new truth coming out of him?
00:09:17.000 Well, the irony is that he has said- Except they hate Obama so much, they love to have him, you know, trashed by saying he's a snook in the country.
00:09:23.000 That's right, it's confirmation bias that people believe what they want to believe.
00:09:26.000 Okay, confirmation bias.
00:09:28.000 Are you listening lefties who are watching Chris Matthews over on MSNBC?
00:09:31.000 It's confirmation bias, do you understand?
00:09:33.000 That's right, you have a bias and everybody confirms the bias.
00:09:34.000 Like if I sit here and I say that Donald Trump is the worst thing that ever was and people think it's news, maybe that's because they already thought he was the worst thing that ever was.
00:09:41.000 That's confirmation bias, but it doesn't apply to me because I'm on the left.
00:09:44.000 Also, I come out of the show.
00:09:45.000 And I'd like to eat soup with a strainer.
00:09:48.000 I don't know why.
00:09:49.000 In any case, the media have decided they don't understand why it is that Trump has any credibility after all of this has happened.
00:09:57.000 Here's the funny thing.
00:09:58.000 There was a poll yesterday from Wall Street Journal NBC News and what it found is that 52% of Americans think the media have gone overboard on Trump.
00:10:06.000 Because they have.
00:10:07.000 Again, that Kellyanne Conway photo is a great example of this.
00:10:10.000 The fact that the media have lost their mind over this photo of Kellyanne Conway with her feet on the couch.
00:10:16.000 It's just absurd.
00:10:17.000 It's just absurd.
00:10:19.000 And it demonstrates how far they're willing to go.
00:10:21.000 There is a strategy to it.
00:10:22.000 Again, the strategy is, if you can polarize about Trump, maybe you take down the entire Republican Party because you figure that Trump is the figurehead for the Republican Party.
00:10:30.000 He's a really volatile figurehead.
00:10:32.000 And maybe he's the anchor that drags down the Republicans.
00:10:35.000 It's not just the media, obviously.
00:10:36.000 It's also the Democrats.
00:10:37.000 So Nancy Pelosi is out there to the Botox lady.
00:10:41.000 The Botox is now seeped into her neurological structures.
00:10:44.000 And she says that it's time to impeach Trump.
00:10:46.000 It's 40 days in.
00:10:47.000 It's time to impeach Trump.
00:10:49.000 But the administration was making this strong case with the American people.
00:10:54.000 And perhaps misrepresenting the American people could be cause for impeachment.
00:10:57.000 If so, there's plenty of grounds right now with the current president.
00:11:02.000 But it just, it just isn't the case.
00:11:04.000 That doesn't mean nobody's listening to cases that are being made in a very scientific, methodical way as to whether there are grounds for impeachment.
00:11:15.000 But the fact is, is that many of, we're trying to unite the country.
00:11:20.000 Many of the president's supporters are just not ready to accept the fact
00:11:24.000 Oh yes, clearly Democrats are ready to unite the country around impeaching Trump.
00:11:37.000 This is the same thing, look, Nancy Pelosi only has one speed, and that speed is impeach Bush, impeach Trump, wouldn't have mattered, could have been Rubio, could have been Romney, would have been exactly the same case made by the Democrats.
00:11:47.000 Maxine Waters, another one of these radical Democrats from California,
00:11:51.000 She says that Trump obviously colluded with Russia to steal the election.
00:11:54.000 By the way, this is the same lady who said the LA riots were an LA uprising.
00:11:57.000 So when people were burning down storefronts owned by Koreans in South Central Los Angeles, that was an uprising, according to Maxine Waters.
00:12:03.000 She also says that Trump colluded with Russia here.
00:12:06.000 Just say that my colleagues and the leadership would not like to hear me say the I word, but I say it over and over again, impeachment, impeachment, impeachment.
00:12:20.000 This president absolutely was in collusion with the Kremlin and Putin in Russia during the campaign.
00:12:30.000 I believe that.
00:12:31.000 And I believe that they undermined our democracy by interfering with our election.
00:12:37.000 And I think that meets the criteria for impeachment.
00:12:41.000 High crimes and miscommunity.
00:12:43.000 But in addition to that, the story that I'm trying to get out is the connection of all of those around him with Russia and with the Kremlin and the fact that they're going for the oil.
00:12:57.000 That's why you hear a lot about lifting the sanctions.
00:13:00.000 They're going for the oil?
00:13:01.000 What is she even talking about?
00:13:02.000 Is she an insane person?
00:13:03.000 Yeah, she's an insane person, actually.
00:13:05.000 The answer is yes, she is a crazy person.
00:13:07.000 Going for the oil.
00:13:08.000 Oil prices are at the lowest they've been in 20 years.
00:13:11.000 What is she saying?
00:13:12.000 Going for the oil.
00:13:14.000 Whenever Maxine Waters appears on a show like this, I'm just waiting for Jerry Springer to pop out and say, we're gonna take a paternity test here on this particular show, Maxine Waters.
00:13:22.000 In any case,
00:13:23.000 The Democrats have decided that Donald Trump is impeachable, and again, this is part of a broader strategy.
00:13:30.000 Now, Chuck Schumer has a bit of a different strategy, and I'll get to Chuck Schumer's strategy in a little bit, but first we have to say thank you to our advertisers over at Birch Gold.
00:13:37.000 So, if you are somebody who's looking at the economy and figuring to yourself, well, things are really good, but maybe they'll go south, maybe I ought to diversify.
00:13:43.000 If you're somebody who is looking at the global financial markets and saying there doesn't seem to be a tremendous amount of stability here,
00:13:50.000 Yeah, I have a little bit of your money in precious metals, and if you want to put some of your money in precious metals, you need to talk to my friends over at Birch Gold Group.
00:13:56.000 A plus rating from the Better Business Bureau, a lot of five-star ratings, and if you contact them now to request a free information kit on physical precious metals, you can do so at birchgold.com slash ben.

00:14:31.000 Now here's the thing.
00:14:32.000 The Democrats are turning Trump into the enemy.
00:14:34.000 And this has been their strategy, not just with Trump or with Bush, but it's been going back for really the entirety of the time, pretty much the entire 20th century, the Democrats have made this case.
00:14:44.000 The case they've made is that Democrats are fighting the enemy, and the enemy are these evil Republicans who want to stand in the way of progress, and they're racist, sexist, bigot, homophobes, and they're people who don't, they don't agree with the greatness of American government, and they're John Lithgow and Footloose, and they want to stop Kevin Bacon from dancing, and all the rest of it.
00:15:02.000 This has always been the pitch.
00:15:03.000 Republicans are the enemy.
00:15:04.000 And Republicans for most of the 20th century made the case that the real enemy were the Soviets.
00:15:09.000 Right?
00:15:09.000 The communists.
00:15:10.000 The international communists were the greatest threat to American security.
00:15:14.000 And most of the time, Americans looked at the Soviet Union, and they said, right, that's a bigger threat than the Republicans.
00:15:19.000 And that's why you end up with President Eisenhower, and President Nixon, and President Reagan, because Americans generally believed the Republicans when they said, your enemy is the Russians, your enemy is the Soviets.
00:15:30.000 They didn't believe Democrats as much when the Democrats said, your enemy is the Republicans.
00:15:33.000 Then the Soviet Union falls.
00:15:35.000 And basically, Republicans don't win presidential elections.
00:15:38.000 They won two popular presidential elections since the fall of the Soviet Union in the popular vote.
00:15:44.000 They won one popular presidential election in 2004, and that was a re-elect.
00:15:48.000 Because Bush lost the popular vote in 2000, and Trump lost the popular vote in 2016.
00:15:53.000 Basically, the case that Democrats have made is still the same case.
00:15:56.000 Republicans are the enemies of the American people, and Republicans have sort of picked a variety of enemies.
00:16:00.000 It's been the radical Muslims, or it's been the Chinese, or it's been the Russians in the case of Mitt Romney.
00:16:07.000 They pick enemies and the American people go, well, are they really so scary?
00:16:11.000 Are they really so scary?
00:16:12.000 So the only time that worked was in 2004 when the answer was yes, they really are that scary.
00:16:16.000 Radical Islamic terrorism could actually kill Americans.
00:16:19.000 That was the only time that worked.
00:16:21.000 A lot of elections take place under the rubric of whose enemies do you most want to fight?
00:16:28.000 Whose enemies do you most want to fight?
00:16:29.000 So, do you most want to fight Republicans or do you most want to fight the Russians or the Chinese?
00:16:34.000 Now the thing about Trump, right now, is that the Democrats are saying that the great enemy is Trump.
00:16:38.000 Trump is the enemy.
00:16:39.000 Same case they've always made.
00:16:40.000 It's the Republicans and Trump.
00:16:41.000 They're the enemy.
00:16:42.000 Donald Trump has another series of enemies.
00:16:44.000 And those enemies are pretty popular.
00:16:46.000 People don't like those enemies very much.
00:16:49.000 Donald Trump, for example, he really hates the press.
00:16:52.000 It turns out Americans really don't like the press.
00:16:54.000 Attacking the press is a good enemy for Donald Trump.
00:16:56.000 Donald Trump has his own set of enemies, and they're pretty good.
00:16:58.000 So here's Donald Trump saying yesterday he doesn't want to do the White House Correspondents' Dinner because, hey, the media's terrible.
00:17:05.000 A lot of the stories are made up.
00:17:06.000 I believe a lot of the stories are pure fiction.
00:17:08.000 They just pull it out of air.
00:17:10.000 Now, with all of that being said, I just thought it would be better if I didn't do the dinner.
00:17:14.000 That doesn't mean I'm not going to do it next year, but I just thought it would be better if I didn't do the dinner.
00:17:19.000 Okay, so the media are his enemies.
00:17:21.000 The media are, you know, in the public view, the media are not our friends, right?
00:17:25.000 They are also our enemies in many ways, and this is why the media publicity, their sort of approval ratings are very low, actually much lower than President Trump's.
00:17:34.000 Donald Trump says your enemies are the Democrats.
00:17:35.000 The Democrats' approval ratings right now are far below those of President Trump.
00:17:39.000 Trump says Barack Obama is the enemy.
00:17:41.000 Americans' approval rating for Obamacare is really not very good.
00:17:44.000 Here's Donald Trump saying that Obama is behind the recent protests against a lot of the things he's trying to do.
00:17:48.000 We talk about President Obama.
00:17:51.000 You said you personally get along with him.
00:17:53.000 You guys were going at each other for three or four, maybe eight years.
00:17:57.000 It turns out his organization seems to be doing a lot of the organizing to some of the protests that a lot of these Republicans are seeing around the country and against you.
00:18:06.000 Do you believe President Obama is behind it?
00:18:08.000 And if he is, is that a violation of the so-called unsaid president's code?
00:18:13.000 No, I think he is behind it.
00:18:15.000 I also think it's politics.
00:18:16.000 That's the way it is.
00:18:19.000 Bush wasn't going after Clinton.
00:18:20.000 Clinton was going after Bush.
00:18:22.000 Well, you never know what's exactly happening behind the scenes.
00:18:25.000 You know, you're probably right or possibly right, but you never know.
00:18:28.000 No, I think that President Obama is behind it because his people are certainly behind it.
00:18:32.000 And some of the leaks possibly come from that group.
00:18:36.000 You know, some of the leaks, which are really very serious leaks because they're very bad in terms of national security.
00:18:42.000 I think?
00:19:00.000 These are enemies that most Americans are pretty much okay with.
00:19:02.000 Americans are okay with Mexico, actually.
00:19:04.000 Americans, I think we have a 62% approval rating of Mexico, but on China, Americans aren't real fond of China.
00:19:10.000 In other words, Trump has his own series of enemies, and by attacking those enemies, he makes himself more popular.
00:19:14.000 If Democrats keep attacking Trump, there's no guarantee that makes them more popular, or that it makes Trump any less popular, because Trump is a known quantity.
00:19:21.000 The electorate is already so polarized.
00:19:23.000 In an area where the electorate's not polarized, attacking Bush
00:19:27.000 Works when Bush had a 40% approval rating from Democrats going in and that goes down to zero.
00:19:31.000 But what happens when Trump's at 45% and his approval rating among Democrats is 3?
00:19:36.000 There's no room to move.
00:19:38.000 There's no way to actually move that crowd.
00:19:40.000 So I'm not sure that the actual best strategy for Democrats is attacking Trump as easy a target as he seems to be, and that's one of the secret strengths of Donald Trump.
00:19:47.000 Meanwhile, the paranoid style of politics that Trump engages in, the sort of everybody is my enemy routine, there's something to that in that if everybody is your enemy, there's very likely to be crossover with the American public on their enemies.
00:19:59.000 If you have lots of enemies, good shot that you and Donald Trump have some enemies in common, whether you're on the right or the left.
00:20:03.000 If you're on the left, then you also believe that the globalists, right, the globalists are in charge of the world economy.
00:20:10.000 Some of your enemies are Donald Trump's enemies.
00:20:12.000 If you're on the right, Donald Trump attacking the bureaucracy.
00:20:14.000 The bureaucracy is your enemy.
00:20:15.000 So Donald Trump, by having tons of enemies, it looks like a paranoid style of politics, but it's actually kind of smart.
00:20:21.000 So we'll talk more about that.
00:20:22.000 I also want to talk about Donald Trump on policy.
