The Ben Shapiro Show

Ep. 272 - Can Trump Actually Fulfill His Promises?

Summary

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) tweeted that Americans are evil and terrible, and that he wishes he ran the world's wealth because he thinks he could allocate it better than billions of people in free exchange goods and services all around the planet. This is not the first time Sanders has expressed this idea. In January, he said America was "not a compassionate society," and stated, "Our record is worse than virtually any other country on Earth." The problem is, the American people actually don't worship wealth in the way Sanders does. They give of themselves far more than residents of any other countries, and the wealthiest 1.4% of Americans are responsible for 86% of all charitable donations made at death. And as for his philanthropy, he donated about $8,300 to charity in 2014 on earnings of $205,000, that is half the percentage of income given to charity that the Clintons handed over in 2014. Today's show also features breaking news from the Hill, including President Trump's latest on the Trump-Russia scandal, the Comey hearing on the Hill and Trump's accusations of Obama wiretapping him, and much, much more! Transcript

00:00:00.000 On Saturday, socialist, septuagenarian loonbag Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Crazyland, took to Twitter to fire off a missive about how evil and terrible Americans are.
00:00:08.000 Here's what he tweeted, quote, We are living in a nation which worships wealth rather than caring for the poor.
00:00:13.000 I don't think that is the nation we should be living in.
00:00:15.000 Oh, he can move.
00:00:17.000 This isn't the first time Sanders has expressed this idea.
00:00:19.000 In January, Sanders said America was, quote, not a compassionate society, and stated, quote, Our record is worse than virtually any other country on Earth.
00:00:27.000 This is stupid.
00:00:28.000 First off, Sanders obviously worships government power rather than caring for the poor.
00:00:32.000 The notion that the socialist nations with which he sympathized throughout his youth cared more for the poor than the greatest prosperity-generating nation in the history of mankind is absurd on its face.
00:00:41.000 Sanders merely wishes he ran the world's wealth because he thinks he could allocate it better than billions of people in free exchange goods and services all around the planet.
00:00:50.000 In fact, he routinely stands against such free exchange.
00:00:53.000 Second, the American people actually don't worship wealth in the way Sanders does.
00:00:56.000 Marxists are materialists.
00:00:58.000 They think that all of human happiness amounts to material well-being.
00:01:01.000 The American people willingly give of themselves far more than residents of any other country.
00:01:05.000 The American almanac of philanthropy
00:01:09.000 Found that Americans quote, out donate Britain and Canada 2 to 1 and nations like Italy and Germany 20 to 1.
00:01:14.000 What's more, more than half of every single income class except those earning less than 25 grand donate to charity.
00:01:20.000 Greedy evil 1 percenters, we give one third of all that charity and the wealthiest 1.4% of Americans are responsible for 86% of the charitable donations made at death.
00:01:30.000 America is by far the most religious country in the industrialized world.
00:01:33.000 The notion we sit around worshiping money is a leftist conceit that identifies good middle-class living built around church and family as babbitry.
00:01:40.000 But Sanders engages in just that sort of babbitry while ignoring community on his own.
00:01:44.000 He owns three homes.
00:01:46.000 And as for his claims that Americans are selfish, he donated about $8,300 to charity in 2014 on earnings of $205,000.
00:01:51.000 That is half the percentage of income given to charity that the Clintons handed over.
00:01:56.000 Not exactly the record of a man who proclaims that wealth means nothing and that the trappings of materialism must be shed in favor of redistribution.
00:02:04.000 The media constantly pay attention to President Trump's Twitter feed.
00:02:06.000 They should.
00:02:07.000 But Sanders' Twitter feed is far more idiotical, and ideologically, it's actually more dangerous.
00:02:12.000 I'm Ben Shapiro.
00:02:12.000 This is The Ben Shapiro Show.
00:02:18.000 So, tons to get to today.
00:02:20.000 Obviously, lots of breaking news from the Hill.
00:02:21.000 We'll talk about what's happening at the Comey hearing on the Hill with the House Intelligence Committee and Trump-Russia ties and Trump's accusations of Obama wiretapping.
00:02:30.000 We'll also talk briefly about the Gorsuch hearings.
00:02:32.000 We'll save some of that for tomorrow because they're happening contemporaneously with the show today.
00:02:36.000 We have lots to get to, even beyond that.
00:02:38.000 But first, we have to say thank you to our sponsors over at Blue Apron.
00:02:41.000 So, if you want a good, solid home-cooked meal, healthy, top-notch, but you actually don't know how to cook, you don't know anything about cooking, you don't know how to shop for the best ingredients, that's what Blue Apron is for.
00:02:52.000 So Blue Apron has
00:02:54.000 Let's do it!
00:03:14.000 I think so.
00:03:34.000 Blue Apron breaks that up for you.
00:03:36.000 Here are some of their upcoming meals.
00:03:37.000 Salmon piccata with orzo and broccoli, vegetable chili, and baked sweet potatoes with crispy tortilla strips.

00:03:56.000 I say there's variety and it's guaranteed.
00:03:58.000 If something comes and it's not ready to cook, they will make it right for you.
00:04:01.000 Right now, if you go to blueapron.com slash Shapiro, blueapron.com
00:04:06.000 Okay, so lots happening on the Hill today, so we will start with that.
00:04:09.000 Not a good hearing for President Trump on the Hill today.
00:04:11.000 So, James Comey, the Director of the FBI,
00:04:35.000 And the National Security Administration head, who is Admiral Mike Rogers, they both basically came out and they said that Trump is full of crap when it comes to Obama wiretapping him.
00:04:49.000 Now, that doesn't mean that there were not Trump associates caught up in wiretaps of Russians.
00:04:54.000 It doesn't mean that Trump associates were not wiretapped themselves, although we have no evidence of that.
00:04:59.000 It does mean that Trump's accusation that President Obama wiretapped him, or that he wiretapped Trump Tower,
00:05:05.000 Again, there is no evidence at all that this is true.
00:05:08.000 So, you know, the idea that Trump keeps promoting it and keeps doubling down on it, he's destroying his own public trust with this thing at this point.
00:05:14.000 So Comey came out and first Comey said there was no evidence at all.
00:05:18.000 He said, I have no information that supports these tweets.
00:05:21.000 We have looked fully within the FBI.
00:05:22.000 He said the DOJ had no information supporting President Trump's tweets either.
00:05:27.000 He said no president could order a wiretap anyway because all electronic surveillance works through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act courts.
00:05:34.000 Which is not a surprise, because top Democrats and Republicans in the House and the Senate have already said they have no evidence to substantiate Trump's tweet.
00:05:41.000 There were the accusations last week by Judge Napolitano on Fox News that British intelligence had been working with Obama to wiretap Trump.
00:05:47.000 The National Security Administration head, Mike Rogers, he said in open testimony that any allegations that the British did this were, quote, utterly ridiculous.
00:05:55.000 So there are all these reports from InfoWars that there were documents that were going to come out showing that Obama had wiretapped Trump.
00:06:00.000 That appears to be, at least according to this testimony, a bunch of crap, which is not surprising.
00:06:04.000 InfoWars tends to report things that are not true more often than other news sources.
00:06:10.000 And people buy into stuff because they feel like it confirms their pre-existing notions.
00:06:15.000 There is a significant amount of confirmation bias in how people view the news.
00:06:18.000 And so this is not good for Trump.
00:06:20.000 Does this mean that the intelligence community leaking about Trump is anything decent?
00:06:23.000 No, it doesn't.
00:06:24.000 And so you have dueling narratives now.
00:06:25.000 The narrative that you get from the left...
00:06:28.000 Is that Trump was full of crap about the Obama wiretaps, and the narrative that you have from the right, from people like, you know, people like me and people like the folks on Fox News, is that these leaks regarding, you know, the information about the Trump team and Russia and all of that, there's no reason that should be out in front.
00:06:46.000 And that's true.
00:06:47.000 There is something deeply awkward and wrong about having the FBI director going out there and discussing active investigations.
00:06:52.000 I think?
00:07:11.000 I'm just gonna put that out front.
00:07:14.000 James Comey, the FBI director, is awful at his job.
00:07:16.000 He can't shut his face.
00:07:17.000 He obviously wants to stick his foot into every public pie that is available.
00:07:22.000 So there are really two pieces of breaking news from the Comey hearings.
00:07:25.000 One, Trump's allegations about the wiretapping at Trump Tower.
00:07:28.000 No evidence of those whatsoever.
00:07:30.000 Is that going to stop people from believing it?
00:07:32.000 No.
00:07:32.000 And we'll get to that in a second.
00:07:34.000 Because that is a major problem, is the idea that if you're rooting for someone, the truth is secondary.
00:07:38.000 We've now been discussing this for well over a year.
00:07:41.000 It's true among conservatives.
00:07:42.000 It's true among leftists.
00:07:43.000 The idea that truth is secondary to victory...
00:07:46.000 I don't
00:08:05.000 Equating success with truth.
00:08:06.000 In other words, if they get away with saying that Trump is an illegitimate president, even if it's not true, then that makes it okay.
00:08:12.000 Right?
00:08:12.000 The ends justify the means has become not just an ancillary part of politics, but the core of politics on both sides, and it's a really, really nasty negative thing.
00:08:21.000 So that's piece of news number one.
00:08:22.000 Piece of news number two is that Comey confirmed that the FBI has been, since July, investigating the Trump-Russia connections.
00:08:31.000 Which is not great.
00:08:33.000 Not a great thing.
00:08:34.000 That means that both presidential candidates in the last election cycle, you want to ride in vote for either of them?
00:08:38.000 Both presidential candidates in the last election cycle were under active investigation by the FBI.
00:08:45.000 Both of them.
00:08:46.000 Or at least their people were, okay?
00:08:48.000 Hillary Clinton was under investigation because of her emails, and Donald Trump's team was under investigation apparently.
00:08:53.000 Here is what Comey said, quote,
00:09:14.000 Now, we have to stop there for a second.
00:09:16.000 Comey at no point said that he had uncovered evidence of actual collusion between the Trump team and the Russians as far as affecting the election.
00:09:24.000 Now, Democrats have been out front saying that there is this deep collusion, it's obvious, it's open to anybody, and they're pointing at people like Paul Manafort and saying, look, Paul Manafort was Trump's campaign manager.
00:09:35.000 Paul Manafort actually worked for Vladimir Putin.
00:09:37.000 What more do you need than that?
00:09:39.000 Well, you do need more than that if you actually want to have criminal charges or if you want to claim that the election was actually impacted in a deep way by Manafort, who was out pretty early on in the election cycle and replaced by Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway.
00:09:51.000 So the idea that Manafort was the guy who was behind everything, that this was all some sort of big Russian plant, are there suspicious ties between Trump campaign officials and Russia?
00:09:59.000 Yes.
00:09:59.000 Does that mean that the ties extend to Trump?
00:10:01.000 No, it doesn't.
00:10:01.000 It's quite possible that Trump, who is admittedly an ignoramus about the political system, that he just hired somebody who is seen as sort of a black ops artist, which is what Manafort was seen as, he hired him, and then he found out that Manafort had ties to the Russians, and then he had to fire him.
00:10:14.000 That's actually quite plausible.
00:10:16.000 So the idea that this extends all the way up to Trump, and that there was active collusion between Trump's people and the Russians in order to affect the election on Trump's behalf.
00:10:23.000 Comey actually said in this hearing, there's no evidence that these shifts in the Republican National Committee platform, the shifts with regard to Ukraine and Russia, he said there's no evidence that that is tied in any way to Russian influence.
00:10:37.000 So, you know, a lot of this is speculation on the part of Democrats.
00:10:41.000 So what we've got on both sides now is speculation on behalf of scandals that really are not materializing.
00:10:47.000 We have speculation on behalf of scandals that are really not materializing on both sides.
00:10:51.000 On the one side, you have people on the right speculating that Trump was a victim of Obama-esque wiretapping and that this is the end of the world.
00:10:59.000 And they're just basically at this point speculating.
00:11:02.000 They're basically just throwing stuff out there without a lot of evidence to back it up.
00:11:05.000 And on the other side, you have the Democrats speculating that Trump is some sort of Russian plant without any evidence to back it up.
00:11:11.000 And so what you end up with is a bunch of innuendo.
00:11:13.000 And nobody trusts each other.
00:11:14.000 And nobody knows what the hell is going on.
00:11:16.000 And that is not a good state for government to be in at this point in time.
00:11:19.000 It's not that you should trust the government.
00:11:21.000 I don't think you should trust the government.
00:11:22.000 I'm in favor of limited government, and I wish that all of this massive distrust in government actually led to people saying, okay, well let's make the government that I don't trust less involved in my life.
00:11:32.000 Unfortunately, what it seems to be doing is the opposite in a lot of ways, which is, I don't trust the government.
00:11:37.000 Therefore, if we put in charge someone that I do trust, then everything will work out just fine.
00:11:43.000 And that's not right.
00:11:44.000 Okay?
00:11:44.000 That's not right.
00:11:45.000 Because just because you trust Trump doesn't mean he's telling you the truth.
00:11:47.000 Just because you trusted Obama didn't mean that he was telling you the truth.
00:11:50.000 They all have their own agenda, and the agenda at no point seems to cross paths even remotely with the truth.
00:11:57.000 So, you know, that's disastrous.
00:11:59.000 Just to give you some evidence that this is how people are thinking now, Adam Schiff, who is one of the people who is doing the questioning during this latest Comey hearing, here's Adam Schiff talking about the level of circumstantial evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
00:12:12.000 Look, collusion is sort of what hasn't been proven here between whatever the Russians did and the Trump campaign.
00:12:18.000 In fact, the former acting director of the CIA, who was Mike Morrell, who was a supporter of Hillary Clinton,
00:12:24.000 He essentially reminded people, took Director Clapper at his word on this show, who said there has been no evidence that has been found of collusion.
00:12:33.000 Are we at the point of, at what point do you start to wonder if there is a fire to all the smoke?
00:12:39.000 Well, first of all, I was surprised to see Director Clapper say that because I don't think you can make that claim categorically as he did.
00:12:47.000 I would characterize it this way at the outset of the investigation.
00:12:50.000 There is circumstantial evidence of collusion.
00:12:52.000 There is direct evidence, I think, of deception.
00:12:56.000 And that's where we begin the investigation.
00:13:00.000 I don't want to prejudge where we ultimately end up, and of course there's one thing to say there's evidence, there's another thing to say we can prove this, or prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, or there's enough evidence to bring to a grand jury for purposes of a criminal indictment.
00:13:13.000 But there is certainly enough for us to conduct an investigation.
00:13:17.000 The American people have a right to know, and in order to defend ourselves, we need to know whether the circumstantial evidence of collusion and direct evidence
00:13:28.000 I assume that the direct evidence of deception he's talking about is Mike Flynn admitting that he talked to the Russians when he said he hadn't talked to the Russians.
00:13:36.000 But again, this is just paper thin.
00:13:39.000 It's just a tissue.
00:13:40.000 It's just a tissue.
00:13:41.000 And then you have Comey out there substantiating the tissue with nothing to back it.
00:13:45.000 And so this is just going to lead to more speculation.
00:13:47.000 This is why the intelligence community needs to stop talking.
00:13:51.000 The intelligence community should not be out front discussing active investigations.
00:13:54.000 This is Comey's fault.
00:13:56.000 It is also the fault of a very, very leaky intelligence community that hates Donald Trump.
00:14:00.000 So that is a third scandal and maybe the biggest one and maybe the biggest problem because the more information comes out that is unsubstantiated and there's no way to substantiate it.
00:14:09.000 The more people are not going to trust either side, and they're going to go back to their respective corners, and the Republicans will talk to Trump and trust him, and the Democrats will talk to Schumer and trust him, and nobody in the center will actually have any place to go, and nobody will know what the truth is.
00:14:21.000 Because the people who are supposed to be investigating the truth keep dripping out little pieces of information that are not helpful in any way, and that is James Comey's fault.
00:14:29.000 That is James Comey's problem.
00:14:31.000 And so I don't think the Republicans are wrong when they say that all of these leaks are a disaster.
00:14:35.000 Eric Trump, you know, he was saying that leaking Trump's taxes is a problem.
00:14:39.000 He's right.
00:14:39.000 Leaking Trump's taxes is a problem.
00:14:41.000 You know, it's really sad that we're in an environment where, you know, tax returns are leaked by
00:14:46.000 Yeah.
00:15:01.000 It's um, as a civilian, it's actually scary to me.
00:15:04.000 Okay, and it should be scary, and I think that Eric Trump is right here.
00:15:07.000 Rand Paul says the same thing.
00:15:08.000 He says that there should be some investigation into the leakers regarding Michael Flynn and his calls with Russia.
00:15:13.000 The intelligence community should not be leaking information on active investigations.
00:15:17.000 I think that we know one thing for sure that the Obama administration did spy on Flynn.
00:15:22.000 Now whether it was direct or indirect, somebody was reading and taking a transcript of his phone calls and then they released it.
00:15:31.000 It is very, very important that whoever released that go to jail because you cannot have members of the intelligence community listening to the most private and highly classified information and then releasing that to the New York Times.
00:15:44.000 There can only be one that is true as well.
00:15:45.000 So, again, just to recap, there are three scandals, okay?
00:15:49.000 There's one that's real, and two that really are not so real.
00:15:51.000 The one that's real is the leaking scandal, because it is obvious.
00:15:55.000 Members of the intelligence community should not be leaking information that is against the law.
00:15:58.000 It is against the law, and it is a problem.
00:16:00.000 It was a problem during the campaign.
00:16:02.000 It was a problem for Hillary Clinton.
00:16:03.000 It's a problem now, okay?
00:16:05.000 All of it is a problem, and James Comey does not make that any better.
00:16:08.000 I think Comey has to go.
00:16:10.000 Then, on the other hand, you have two other scandals, both of which seem to be paper-thin and falling apart.
00:16:14.000 One is Trump saying that Obama wiretapped him, paper-thin, but Republicans believe it anyway.
00:16:18.000 And the other is Trump and Russia were colluding, paper-thin, but Democrats believe it anyway.
00:16:22.000 None of this is good for our politics.
00:16:24.000 And then there's something else that's really bad for our politics that I'll discuss in just a second.
00:16:28.000 But first, I have to say thank you to our advertisers over at MyPatriotSupplies.
00:16:32.000 So right now, North Korea won't shut up, okay?
00:16:34.000 North Korea keeps saying over and over that they're gonna nuke us.
00:16:37.000 And you may not believe them until it's time for them to nuke us.
00:16:41.000 You don't worry about a natural disaster either until the natural disaster has already happened.
00:16:45.000 You don't worry too much about an earthquake or a flood or a hurricane until it's too late and it's hit you and all the grocery stores are cleaned out and you don't have anywhere to get the food and the government can't get to you.
00:16:55.000 And that's why you need to go to preparewithben.com right now.
00:16:58.000 Preparewithben.com or call 888-803-1413 and get your four week supply of emergency food.
00:17:06.000 I don't
00:17:22.000 Go do it.
00:17:23.000 Put it in your closet.
00:17:24.000 Forget about it until it's time for you to use the food supply that you were smart enough to buy in advance.
00:17:28.000 Preparewithben.com.
00:17:31.000 888-803-1413.
00:17:32.000 And apparently the food tastes really good, actually.
00:17:34.000 I was told that by people in the office who have tasted it.
00:17:36.000 Preparewithben.com.
00:17:37.000 888-803-1413.
00:17:37.000 You never worry about an emergency until it's too late.
00:17:45.000 Right now you can get this off your mind right now Just go to preparewithben.com right now order that and before week emergency food supply You never have to worry about it again, and that's the way it should work.
00:17:53.000 Okay, so
00:17:55.000 There is something else really nasty happening in politics and that is we're undermining trust from both sides because we've barricaded ourselves in our own narrative without actually looking at the evidence.
00:18:04.000 Is there evidence that Trump colluded with Russia?
00:18:06.000 Not so much.
00:18:06.000 Is there evidence that Obama wiretapped Trump?
00:18:09.000 Not so much.
00:18:10.000 And so we barricade ourselves in our sides and we just look for confirming information and that's exacerbated by all the social media which have algorithms that benefit
00:18:19.000 Sites that are like the ones you look at.
00:18:21.000 So if you tend to look at sites on the right, you're going to be promoted to more sites on the right, and that means that you are further ensconced in this bubble.
00:18:27.000 But the biggest problem, I think, is that our politicians just keep lying to us.
00:18:31.000 They just keep lying for their own political benefit, and then the promises they make never materialize, which undermines trust on a grand scale.
00:18:38.000 Roland Martin was talking about the fact that Trumpcare is now going to be up for a vote.
00:18:42.000 And Trumpcare should be up for a vote, I guess, this Thursday in the House.
00:18:45.000 Trump has been promising for a long time.
00:18:47.000 Nobody is going to lose their health insurance.
00:18:50.000 Health insurance is going to be available for everyone.
00:18:52.000 He's been using Democrat language to talk about Trumpcare for a very long time, about health insurance for a very long time.
00:18:57.000 And he made a bunch of promises that this bill is just not going to guarantee because Trump was talking in terms that the bill doesn't guarantee.
00:19:03.000 Roland Martin, who's a Democrat, says this, but he's not wrong.
00:19:05.000 Here he is.
00:19:06.000 You've been had, you've been took, you've been hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray, run amok.
00:19:11.000 To watch these white, working class voters, upset and mad, saying, I voted for you, and I'm going, we tried to tell you this is what the main city was going to do.
00:19:21.000 Now they're faced with the backlash of, now they love the Affordable Care Act, and now Republicans are in a box.
00:19:27.000 Okay, and he is not wrong that when you make promises to people and you can't fulfill those promises, that undermines trust.
00:19:34.000 So in 2010, Republicans said that they were going to repeal and replace Obamacare.
00:19:37.000 They didn't.
00:19:38.000 In 2012, they said they were going to do it.
00:19:40.000 In 2014, they said they were going to do it.
00:19:42.000 In 2016, they said they were going to do it.
00:19:43.000 And then the plan that they proposed doesn't actually do it.
00:19:45.000 So, I want to talk about the damage that it does.
00:19:48.000 When Republicans make promises to the white working class, and to the working class generally, it's not just white working class, that they cannot keep, and whether that makes a difference or not.
00:19:58.000 And we'll talk about, can Republicans win by telling the truth?
00:20:00.000 I think that is the big question in all of this, just generally, from the scandals to Trumpcare.
00:20:05.000 I think the biggest question right now, can Republicans win by telling the truth, or is truth an obstacle to victory?
00:20:11.000 And that means the truth has to go out
00:20:13.000 I think so.
