00:00:13.000The show is called Nobody Wants This, which ironically enough describes my own reaction to this show.
00:00:18.000The show is based on a book written by one Aaron Foster, who is a woman who converted via Reform Judaism to Judaism, which is to say, yeah, well, let's put it this way the Orthodox do not approve of Reform conversions.
00:00:30.000They do not believe that Reform conversions are real, namely because.
00:00:33.000Reform Judaism is not a particularly demanding form of Judaism.
00:00:37.000It doesn't require any sort of ritual adherence.
00:00:38.000It doesn't require a belief in most of the actual tenets of Judaism or Jewishness.
00:00:44.000So they decided to make an entire series about it on Netflix because this is the way it works at Netflix.
00:00:47.000If you're going to make a series about Jews, they are either secular or basically they're like slightly more than secular, kind of like my big fat Greek wedding type Jewish, or they're repressive Haridim.
00:00:59.000Those are the kinds of Jews that you see on Netflix.
00:01:02.000Occasionally you'll see Fauda, and that's really more just about Israeliness than it is about Jewishness per se.
00:01:07.000But controversy broke out because believe it or not, you'll be shocked to know that one of the actors in Nobody Wants This, which is again starring Adam Brody and Kristen Bell.
00:01:17.000Adam Brody plays a reform rabbi who is dating a non Jewish woman, played by Kristen Bell.
00:01:30.000He has no relationship with Judaism, he's completely secular.
00:01:34.000But he did an interview with GQ in which he said, Put me down as thinking it's a genocide about Israel, put me down as wanting a free Palestine.
00:01:41.000It's awful that it's taken so much death and misery, but it does feel like it's reaching a breaking point that it should have a while ago.
00:01:48.000So he is using his platform as a fake reform rabbi on a show about intermarriage, essentially, or quasi intermarriage, to mouth off about Israel and free Palestine and all the rest.
00:02:24.000I think, you know, our work environment, our set is very similar to dinner tables around the world where people are having debate and discussion and disagreeing.
00:02:35.000And, you know, while I love Adam, I also disagree with him, and that's okay.
00:02:41.000I think that as the creator of the show, all I can say is that.
00:02:46.000I want our Jewish fans to know that I see you and I hear you and I understand how you feel.
00:02:52.000And the show has always been and always will be a love letter to Judaism.
00:03:00.000It's because of how beautiful of an experience I've had becoming Jewish and being a Jewish person.
00:03:06.000And sitting here right now at this time in the world where there is almost zero positive representation of Jewish people, I think it's so important to have that.
00:03:17.000And that is what this show is intended to be.
00:03:49.000She says it makes a difference to the Jewish community.
00:03:53.000She says, I believe the perseverance of the existence of the state of Israel is crucial to the well being of the democratic world and of the free world.
00:04:01.000The fact that in Hollywood, if you're Tova Felcha and you say something perfectly obvious, there's much more of a career risk than if you're Adam Brody and you say something totally false.
00:04:10.000It just shows you where Hollywood is politically.
00:04:12.000And the way that you make bank in Hollywood is to be Mark Ruffalo.
00:04:14.000The way that you make bank in Hollywood is not to be Tova Felcha.
00:04:19.000And I wish the creators of the show would stand up a little stronger.
00:04:22.000If indeed what they're attempting to do is portray Jewishness in a positive light.
00:04:27.000Well, the Red Green Alliance is dominant in certain parts of the world.
00:04:30.000That is particularly true in Ireland, where it turns out the leadership in Ireland is now calling on the Irish government to approve student visas for Gazans.
00:04:39.000This is a band called Hosier that I may be mispronouncing, but don't really care.
00:04:44.00055 students in Gaza who are waiting for their visas to be approved for scholarship places that they. have earned and scholarship places that are waiting for them here in Ireland and the government has not approved their visa applications.
00:05:06.000This QR code, if you just want to take a photo of it, if you just want to save the link, if you want to follow it, that is for a petition that is to pressure the government to expedite these visa applications.
00:05:16.000This has happened before, it happened last year and this can be solved with ministerial discretion.
00:05:23.000It's an absolute wonder, it's baffling why it hasn't been solved yet.
00:05:46.000I think it'll work out beautifully for them.
00:05:48.000Macklemore, who, again, is the Colin Kaepernick of music, nobody actually wants to listen to him sing his songs, but he has been able to create a cottage industry, basically just ripping on Israel when he's not wearing anti Semitic hook noses and such.
00:06:02.000There is some irony to the fact that he says that music has given people a place to resist throughout history.
00:06:07.000There's some irony to this given the fact that Hamas literally slaughtered everyone at a music festival, which is what kicked off the October 7th war, but you know.
00:06:17.000Because throughout history, throughout history, music has given people the place to resist, to come together as a collective, to share our grief, to share our stories, to move from the heart, to mobilize.
00:06:34.000People with the frequency of love, the heartbeat in our drum that makes us feel alive, that makes us feel connected.
00:06:45.000Yeah, nothing says love and liberation quite like Hamas.
