00:00:06.000 I'm Ben Shapiro.
00:00:06.000 Spiro, this is The Ben Shapiro Show.

00:00:20.000 Alrighty, so last night, President Trump basically said to coronavirus, I'm in control here.
00:00:25.000 And coronavirus said, do you feel in control?
00:00:29.000 So, things are not going great out there with the coronavirus.
00:00:31.000 The big problem, of course, continued lack of information.
00:00:34.000 The testing kits are not widely available.
00:00:35.000 We just don't know how many people in the United States actually have coronavirus.
00:00:39.000 We don't even know how many people abroad have coronavirus.
00:00:41.000 What we do know is that there are certain measures that have been taken.
00:00:44.000 The harsher the measures, it seems, the faster the coronavirus is brought under control.
00:00:48.000 This is true.
00:00:49.000 In Wuhan, it was true.
00:00:50.000 In South Korea, where you've seen a significant bending of the curve, that is what people are calling it, the curve being the number of people who are infected and then the number of people who are dying.
00:00:58.000 This obviously means that people are now getting increasingly serious and cautious about going to wide-scale public events.
00:01:05.000 Not that if you're young and you go to a big public event, you're gonna die, but that if you go to a public event, you may become a carrier or transmitter to somebody who is more vulnerable, somebody with a preexisting condition, somebody who doesn't have a strong immune system, cancer patients, leukemia patients.
00:01:17.000 People who are older, right?
00:01:18.000 All of this is deeply frightening.
00:01:21.000 I mean, there's no other way to put it.
00:01:22.000 You look at the news, it's hard not to be scared.
00:01:24.000 And the reason it's hard not to be scared is when you see Italy shutting down every public space, like all public spaces, except for grocery stores and pharmacies.
00:01:31.000 No church services going on in Italy.
00:01:33.000 No stores open in Italy.
00:01:35.000 When you see Israel shutting down not only all travel, but all public events, over 100 people.
00:01:39.000 When you see people trying to shut down public events in Washington State.
00:01:43.000 Obviously, all of this is predicated on the notion that coronavirus is easily transmitted, which, as far as we know, is true, and also that coronavirus is a lot more deadly than the flu, which, as far as we know, is also true, but it does differ based on age bracket.
00:01:59.000 It is irresponsible reporting to suggest that every person who gets coronavirus is equally likely to die of it or experience significant ramifications from coronavirus.
00:02:09.000 The younger you are, the better chance you have of recovering from this.
00:02:11.000 And even if you're older, the majority of the people who are getting it are indeed recovering.
00:02:15.000 The death rates, even for people above 80, yes, it's like 15%, which is unbelievably high, really frightening.
00:02:21.000 But that means that 85% of the people getting it above the age of 80 are recovering from coronavirus.
00:02:26.000 But it is lack of information that, of course, is scaring the living hell out of everyone.
00:02:30.000 And this means that President Trump stepping into the fray and presenting some sort of plan here was absolutely necessary.
00:02:37.000 President Trump did that last night.
00:02:38.000 He got some mixed reviews.
00:02:41.000 Let's put it that way.
00:02:42.000 But first, let's get to the actual news.
00:02:44.000 So yesterday, the World Health Organization declared a pandemic of coronavirus disease, COVID-19.
00:02:50.000 According to the Washington Post, the WHO declared coronavirus a pandemic, reflecting alarm that countries aren't working quickly and aggressively enough to fight the disease it causes, COVID-19.
00:02:58.000 We are deeply concerned by both the alarming levels of spread and severity, and at the alarming levels of inaction, said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
00:03:07.000 For weeks now, the WHO has hesitated to make a pandemic declaration for fear of inciting panic or prompting some countries to flag in their efforts, even though many epidemiologists believe the coronavirus had already spread to pandemic levels.
00:03:18.000 On Wednesday, Tedros noted the widespread scale of the outbreak.
00:03:21.000 He said there are now more than 118,000 cases in 114 countries.
00:03:25.000 Over 4,000 people, 4,291 at that count, have lost their lives.
00:03:29.000 In the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of coronavirus cases, the number of deaths, and the number of affected countries climb even higher.
00:03:36.000 Tedros said that the word pandemic is not a word to be used lightly or carelessly.
00:03:41.000 It's a word that, if misused, can cause unreasonable fear or unjustified acceptance that the fight is over, leading to unnecessary suffering and death.
00:03:48.000 The WHO's announcement does not trigger any new funding protocols or regulations.
00:03:51.000 It basically just scares the living hell out of everyone, is what you get from that.
00:03:55.000 It's not that anybody then gets a release of funding thanks to, like, if you declare a national emergency in the United States, that gives additional powers to the government.
00:04:02.000 That's not the same thing for the WHO.
00:04:04.000 When they declare a pandemic, it basically has the same effect as Michael Scott going to the center of the office and shouting, I declare bankruptcy.
00:04:11.000 Like, okay, thanks.
00:04:14.000 Super helpful.
00:04:15.000 Okay, with that said, the NBA has now put its season on hold after one player tested positive for coronavirus.
00:04:21.000 We're now finding out That a second player has tested positive for coronavirus.
00:04:24.000 According to the LA Times, the NBA on Wednesday indefinitely suspended the 2019-2020 season after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19.
00:04:33.000 Just a couple of days ago, Gobert, who apparently was coughing in the locker room, he jokingly went around the press room and started touching everything.
00:04:41.000 Like, it's a joke.
00:04:42.000 He started touching all the microphones.
00:04:43.000 He started touching all the reporters' stuff.
00:04:45.000 Well, turns out, dude had coronavirus.
00:04:47.000 And now it turns out that another player has come down with coronavirus as well.
00:04:52.000 According to The League, the test result was reported shortly prior to the tip-off of tonight's game between the Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
00:04:59.000 At that time, tonight's game was canceled.
00:05:01.000 The affected player was not in the arena.
00:05:03.000 The NBA is suspending gameplay following the conclusion of tonight's schedule of games until further notice.
00:05:07.000 So we're now living inside Space Jam.
00:05:09.000 If you remember the plot of Space Jam, all the players refuse to play because they are afraid that they're going to be infected with the alien virus inside the locker room.
00:05:16.000 The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic.
00:05:22.000 Mark Cuban, who's the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, he came out yesterday.
00:05:25.000 He said that he's going to try and find a way to continue paying his hourly employees, which is a really cool thing to do, obviously.
00:05:32.000 The Lakers and Clippers were considered favorites for the championship.
00:05:35.000 The Lakers landed in China for exhibition games after an international incident.
00:05:38.000 This was just the end of last year.
00:05:40.000 Lakers employees are being advised to work from home for the foreseeable future.
00:05:43.000 The Clippers will not practice on Thursday.
00:05:46.000 Meanwhile, we are now finding out that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have tested positive for coronavirus, which is always good news.
00:05:52.000 And by good news, I mean just ridiculous and horrifying.
00:05:55.000 So even celebrities.
00:05:57.000 Coronavirus falls on the blessed and the unblessed alike.
00:06:01.000 As first reported by Deadline, the Academy Award winner and his wife were on location in Australia for pre-production of a film on Elvis Presley when they began experiencing symptoms.
00:06:09.000 Hanks wrote in a statement first published by Deadline and later shared to Twitter, we felt a bit tired like we had colds, we had some body aches, Rita had some chills that came and went, slight fevers too.
00:06:17.000 To plate things right as is needed in the world right now, we are tested for coronavirus and were found to be positive.
00:06:21.000 Hanks went on to say that he and Wilson will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety require.
00:06:28.000 And meanwhile, as I mentioned, we now have a breaking piece of news that jazz star Donovan Mitchell has tested positive for coronavirus as well.
00:06:38.000 Jazz players privately say that Rudy Gobert had been careless in the locker room, touching other players and their belongings as well.
00:06:45.000 So, that's scary stuff.
00:06:46.000 Reuters is reporting that President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil is being tested for coronavirus.
00:06:51.000 We know the health minister of Great Britain has coronavirus.
00:06:53.000 So, this thing is widespread.
00:06:56.000 It is hitting a lot of people.
00:06:58.000 It would not be surprising to me that if universal testing were available in the United States, hundreds of thousands of people would have coronavirus already.
00:07:03.000 That would not be shocking at all.
00:07:05.000 The Brazilian government spokesman, who met with President Trump last weekend and was pictured standing next to him, has now tested positive for coronavirus as well.
00:07:13.000 So you would hope that the President of the United States has been tested for coronavirus.
00:07:16.000 The Brazilian President, as I mentioned, is now being monitored for coronavirus.
00:07:19.000 His schedule for the week was cancelled.
00:07:21.000 Both were with Donald Trump and Mike Pence last Saturday at Mar-a-Lago as well.
00:07:26.000 So, all of this is, um, all of this is deeply disturbing.
00:07:30.000 We're going to get to more of this in just one second, and President Trump's response, which, as I say, is receiving, at best, mixed reviews, and frankly, those mixed reviews are well-deserved.

00:09:03.000 The View taped yesterday without an audience, which basically mirrors reality.
00:09:06.000 But in any case, the Hollywood Reporter is now saying that the Late Show with Colbert, Tonight Show with Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, all will be proceeding without audiences.
00:09:18.000 Also, Fox News has confirmed that the Greg Gutfeld Show is dropping into audience as well, so everybody is cutting down on the audiences.
00:09:24.000 The NCAA Tournament is now going to be played without fans.
00:09:27.000 In a statement posted on Wednesday afternoon, the NCAA President Mark Emmert announced that upcoming championship events, including the men's and women's basketball tournaments, will be played in front of only essential staff and limited family as well.
00:09:39.000 Emmert wrote, while I understand how disappointing this is for all the fans of our sports, my decision is based on the current understanding of how COVID-19 is progressing in the United States.
00:09:48.000 This decision is in the best interest of public health, including that of coaches, administrators, fans, and most importantly, our student-athletes.
00:09:54.000 The men's final floor was slated to take place before a sellout crowd of probably 70,000 people at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta as well.
00:10:01.000 Meanwhile, New York City has canceled the St.
00:10:03.000 Patrick's Day parade.
00:10:04.000 That is no shock at all.
00:10:05.000 I predicted that a little bit earlier this week.
00:10:07.000 Although Bill de Blasio said on Monday there were no plans to cancel the parade, the parade has now been canceled.
00:10:12.000 There are now 53 known cases of COVID-19 in New York City.
00:10:15.000 The answer is probably a lot, lot higher.
00:10:17.000 Parent-teacher conferences at public schools have been canceled.
00:10:20.000 And Andrew Cuomo announced on Wednesday that all of the SUNY and CUNY schools will switch to remote learning.
00:10:25.000 Now, one of the big controversies right now is whether there should be widespread school shutdowns.
00:10:30.000 The case in favor of widespread school shutdowns is that the kids are basically germ factories.
00:10:37.000 They're going to be passing this stuff to each other, then they go home and they bring it to mom and dad who bring it to grandparents.
00:10:41.000 That is the case for shutting down the schools.
00:10:42.000 Schools are germ factories.
00:10:44.000 The case for not shutting down the schools is kids are germ factories.
00:10:47.000 You bring them home from school, what exactly do you do with them all day?
00:10:50.000 And a lot of people don't have childcare.
00:10:51.000 If you send them to a daycare, it's the same thing as sending them to a school.
00:10:54.000 If they're home, they're more likely in touch with other members of their family.
00:10:57.000 So it's not really a cure-all.
00:10:59.000 It is unclear whether school shutdowns are the best idea at this point for schools that do not actually have any incidence of coronavirus.
00:11:06.000 But again, because testing of coronavirus is so scanty.
00:11:09.000 It's difficult to tell who the hell even has coronavirus at this point.
00:11:13.000 Okay, so with all of this said, Angela Merkel in Germany is telling the German people that 70% of the population could come in contact with coronavirus.
00:11:24.000 She said the consensus among experts is that 60 to 70% of the population will be infected as long as this remains the situation.
00:11:31.000 She says that we have to basically shut down all social meetings.
00:11:37.000 No more handshakes.
00:11:38.000 We really have to change our lives in significant ways in order to prevent this sort of widespread spread of coronavirus.
00:11:45.000 And that makes perfect sense.
00:11:47.000 I mean, remember, right now we're just buying time.
00:11:49.000 That's what this is about.
00:11:49.000 This is not that coronavirus will disappear if we all take two weeks off.
00:11:52.000 The idea here is that you're buying time, you're slowing the spread, that every day that you add to that curve means a day that researchers are able to develop a vaccine.
00:12:00.000 It's a day that brings us closer to summer.
00:12:02.000 There's a lot of speculation that during warm weather seasons, the flu tends to die out.
00:12:06.000 And so if we can get into summer and warm weather in the northern hemisphere, that that will help curb the spread of coronavirus in general.
00:12:13.000 We can all pray and hope for that.
00:12:16.000 Bottom line is that everybody is rightly at this point worried about coronavirus because we do not have enough information.
00:12:23.000 And a lot of that has to do with lack of testing.
00:12:25.000 That is the fault of the federal government.
00:12:27.000 It is the fault of state governments.
00:12:28.000 We talked yesterday about the fact that even local testing in Seattle was shut down by the FDA and the CDC.
00:12:34.000 All of this has resulted in the Dow Jones Industrial Average absolutely collapsing.
00:12:37.000 Yesterday, the Dow ended its 11-year bull market as coronavirus defied economic remedies.
00:12:43.000 All this talk about how we're going to solve this thing by pumping the economy full of money?
00:12:47.000 That's not right.
00:12:47.000 People are not spending.
00:12:48.000 People are not going out in public places.
00:12:50.000 They shouldn't be spending.
00:12:50.000 They shouldn't be going out and hanging out in public places.
00:12:53.000 So, of course, you're going to see an economic contraction.
00:12:55.000 When everybody stays home, there's an economic contraction.
00:12:57.000 That is not a great shock.
00:12:59.000 What you would expect is that once coronavirus is under control, no matter what, you would see a V-shaped recovery because the underlying economic fundamentals are not really the problem.
00:13:07.000 The problem right now is that...
00:13:10.000 Is that nobody knows what is coming and that uncertainty is being priced into the market.
00:13:14.000 Suffice it to say that Dow Jones Industrial Average is taking an absolute beating.
00:13:18.000 It took a beating yesterday.
00:13:19.000 It was down 1400 points yesterday.
00:13:21.000 It opened this morning down 2000 points.
00:13:24.000 So it has dropped down well below 22,000.
00:13:26.000 It is headed toward 21,000 right now.
00:13:31.000 And just remember, folks, that when Barack Obama left office, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was in the neighborhood of About $20,000.
00:13:39.000 It was about $19,800.
00:13:40.000 We are now at $21,000.
00:13:42.000 $21,500.
00:13:43.000 So we are approaching the point where all stock market gains under President Trump have been lost thanks to coronavirus alone, which is an amazing, amazing statement about globalization and the costs of globalization.
00:13:55.000 The benefits of globalization are there for everybody to see.
00:13:57.000 The costs of globalization are, if you have a black swan event like this one, it can completely shut down supply lines all over the globe.
00:14:03.000 And Dow Jones' collapse today does demonstrate that President Trump's attempts last night to tamp this thing down were a failure, at least in the public mind.
00:14:12.000 There is no sense of confidence that is emanating from the federal government.
00:14:15.000 This does not mean that the federal government could, at this point, do anything that would tamp down the markets.
00:14:21.000 Bottom line is that even if Trump had done a stellar job last night, which he did not, Even if Trump had done a stellar job last night, it is unlikely that the markets wouldn't have dropped this morning because, again, he can't provide assurances that everything is under control because everything isn't under control.
00:14:32.000 We don't know exactly what the hell is happening right now.
00:14:35.000 I mean, the fact is that Italy has shut down all life there and the deaths continue to rise in Italy.
00:14:41.000 So we're going to bring you more of this in just one second.
00:14:43.000 We'll get to President Trump's response yesterday.
00:14:46.000 Which was marred by a bunch of screw-ups, unfortunately.
00:14:48.000 We'll get to that momentarily.
00:14:49.000 First, let us talk about protecting your online activity.
00:14:52.000 So here's the reality.
00:14:53.000 If you're spending the next two weeks self-quarantining, well, you're probably gonna be online a lot.
00:14:56.000 And you know what that is a boon for?
00:14:58.000 Hackers.
00:14:58.000 People who are looking for your data.
00:15:00.000 You should be using a VPN.
00:15:01.000 I use a VPN.
00:15:02.000 Even if you're using incognito mode, that doesn't really protect you.
00:15:04.000 ISPs can still see your entire browsing history.
00:15:07.000 And of course, They can also sell this information to tech giants as well.
00:15:11.000 ExpressVPN also encrypts 100% of your data with the best-in-class encryption so your information is always protected.
00:15:17.000 Even when you're using public Wi-Fi like at a cafe or a hotel, ExpressVPN works on everything.
00:15:21.000 Phones, laptops, routers.
00:15:23.000 Everyone who shares your Wi-Fi can still be protected even if they don't have ExpressVPN.

00:15:51.000 So President Trump.
00:15:52.000 Spoke last night on coronavirus.
00:15:55.000 Whoever greenlit this bleep show should be fired.
00:15:59.000 I mean, seriously.
00:16:01.000 It's not entirely Trump's fault because, again, he has speechwriters who did this thing for him.
00:16:06.000 Let's put it this way.
00:16:07.000 This thing started with Donald Trump on C-SPAN saying the F-word because he had an ink stain on his shirt.
00:16:15.000 That is never a good way to start this thing.
00:16:17.000 Hey, do not make the cameras live, you morons, until the president is ready to speak.
00:16:22.000 Then President Trump got on air and he spoke about coronavirus.
00:16:26.000 It did not steady the markets.
00:16:27.000 It didn't make people feel a lot more secure.
00:16:29.000 He was getting serious about it.
00:16:31.000 It was a lot better than President Trump going out in public and suggesting there were 15 cases and it was moving down to zero, as he did a couple of weeks ago, which was obviously untrue.
00:16:38.000 But with that said, here was the president of the United States last night announcing, we are marshalling the full force of the American government.
00:16:43.000 Today the World Health Organization officially announced that this is a global pandemic.
00:16:50.000 We have been in frequent contact with our allies and we are marshalling the full power of the federal government and the private sector to protect the American people.
00:17:01.000 This is the most aggressive and comprehensive effort to confront a foreign virus in modern history.
00:17:07.000 Okay, well, there's only one problem, which is that he didn't actually get to the key points of the speech.
00:17:14.000 So here's what he announced.
00:17:15.000 He announced that we're suspending all travel from Europe to the United States.
00:17:18.000 There's one problem with that.
00:17:19.000 We are not, in fact, suspending all travel from Europe to the United States.
00:17:22.000 You can still get in if you are coming in from the UK.
00:17:25.000 Also, it turns out that if you're an American citizen overseas, if you're a soldier overseas, you can come home.
00:17:29.000 He didn't make that clear.
00:17:30.000 So a lot of people overseas were rushing to buy plane tickets, hoping to sneak in under the deadline.
00:17:35.000 Sort of shades of the original travel ban that President Trump issued when he first came into office that was a debacle in the way that it was originally instituted.
00:17:42.000 If you're going to give a speech like this, you have to have everything locked down.
00:17:45.000 You're trying to provide a sense of solidity.
00:17:47.000 You're trying to provide a sense that you know what you're doing, that the federal government has thought these policies out.
00:17:52.000 Fully.
00:17:52.000 And that they are providing detailed guidance to people.
00:17:55.000 Look, President Trump was serious about coronavirus, which again is a good thing.
00:17:59.000 But, when you give a speech like this, you gotta make sure that everything is locked down.
00:18:03.000 It was not locked down.
00:18:04.000 Here's President Trump suggesting that all travel from Europe is going to be suspended.
00:18:08.000 To keep new cases from entering our shores, we will be suspending all travel from Europe to the United States for the next 30 days.
00:18:18.000 The new rules will go into effect Friday at midnight.
00:18:21.000 These restrictions will be adjusted subject to conditions on the ground.
00:18:26.000 There will be exemptions for Americans who have undergone appropriate screenings, and these prohibitions will not only apply to the tremendous amount of trade and cargo, But various other things as we get approval.
00:18:41.000 Anything coming from Europe to the United States is what we are discussing.
00:18:46.000 Okay, so that is not true.
00:18:47.000 Okay, so that is mistake number two.
00:18:49.000 Okay, mistake number two is that he announced that there would be basically bans on the importation of European goods, which would shut down the entire global economy.
00:18:56.000 And the stock market was like, what the F is this?
00:18:59.000 And it turns out, of course, that his executive order does no such thing.
00:19:01.000 It doesn't apply to trade and goods.
00:19:03.000 It applies to humans.
00:19:05.000 Because if you buy something from Europe, it is not as though the virus is coming over on your food thing from Europe.
00:19:11.000 So, announcing apparently accident- I mean, it's in the teleprompter, so I'm not sure how that's an accident.
00:19:16.000 Whoever put that in the teleprompter needs to be fired forthwith.
00:19:19.000 That the prohibitions will not only apply to the tremendous amount of trading cargo, but various other things as we get approval.
00:19:24.000 The White House then had to clarify, saying that the ban only applies to human beings, not goods or cargo.
00:19:29.000 The people transporting goods will not be admitted into the country, but the goods will.
00:19:33.000 And then President Trump had to go on Twitter and correct himself.
00:19:35.000 He said, please remember, very important for all countries and businesses to know, trade will in no way be affected by the 30-day restriction on travel from Europe.
00:19:41.000 The restriction stops people, not goods.
00:19:43.000 Also important to note, when he says 30-day restriction, the executive order does not have a 30-day timeline, so it could be extended beyond 30 days.
00:19:50.000 Also, Trump didn't mention that the ban would not apply to American residents, citizens, or generally citizens, immediate family members, and the DHS, the Department of Homeland Security, had to issue a statement making that clear.
00:20:02.000 Okay, then President Trump announced that health insurance providers had agreed to waive customer payments for coronavirus treatment.
00:20:09.000 He said earlier this week, I met with the leaders of health insurance industry who have agreed to waive all copayments for coronavirus treatments, extend insurance coverage to these treatments, and to prevent surprise at medical billing.
00:20:19.000 But that's not true.
00:20:20.000 They met with Trump and they said, we'll make the coronavirus testing free.
00:20:23.000 That is a very different thing from coronavirus treatment.
00:20:25.000 If you get double pneumonia as a result of coronavirus, insurance companies can't make that free.
00:20:29.000 Exactly how are they going to survive that without some sort of federal government bailout?
00:20:33.000 A White House official confirmed to CNN that insurers had only agreed to waive co-payments on testing, not the actual cost of the treatment itself.
00:20:42.000 Then President Trump attacked the European Union, saying that large numbers of clusters in the U.S.
00:20:46.000 had been seeded by European travelers.
00:20:48.000 I mean, some of that is true, but the fact is that we are not even sure whether banning travel from Europe at this point is going to be incredibly effective, considering that we now have community infection in the United States.
00:20:58.000 So, while it may be a good idea to prevent further travel generally, because travel is basically people in small, enclosed spaces with lots of other people, with that said, the idea that a travel shutdown at this point is gonna be completely effective, It was effective originally.
00:21:11.000 Now that the virus is widespread, it's difficult to imagine how that's going to be completely effective in the United States.
00:21:15.000 We can't even trace where the cases are coming from right now.
00:21:18.000 We have community infections.
00:21:20.000 President Trump did announce that the Small Business Administration will be providing $50 billion in small business loans.
00:21:26.000 One of the problems with this particular policy Is that how do you determine which small businesses ought to get the loans in the first place?
00:21:33.000 Once the government becomes the lender of last resort to businesses, you're picking and choosing winners in a way that other policies would not.
00:21:39.000 A payroll tax holiday would not pick and choose winners.
00:21:42.000 If the federal government were frankly to just give everybody $1,000, Andrew Yang style, that would not be picking and choosing winners, but instead to use the SBA to sort of prop up particular businesses, but not other businesses.
00:21:53.000 Unless it's universal, it's very difficult to see how this is going to work.
00:21:55.000 Here's President Trump talking about the Small Business Administration.
00:21:59.000 I am instructing the Small Business Administration to exercise available authority to provide capital and liquidity to firms affected by the coronavirus.
00:22:10.000 Effective immediately, the SBA will begin providing economic loans in affected states and territories.
00:22:18.000 These low-interest loans will help small businesses overcome temporary economic disruptions caused by the virus.
00:22:26.000 To this end, I am asking Congress to increase funding for this program by an additional $50 billion.
00:22:33.000 Okay, so we'll see whether that is effective or not.
00:22:36.000 Bottom line is that there's gonna have to be some government response to the fact that there are gonna be a lot of short-term layoffs, people being furloughed from work thanks to all of this.
00:22:45.000 It would not be surprising for the federal government to step in.
00:22:47.000 Okay, we're gonna get to the media's response to Trump because Trump's speech had serious problems.
00:22:51.000 He did not look good doing it.
00:22:52.000 He made some real mistakes in the middle of the speech, but the media's response is overwhelmingly stupid, like incredibly and overwhelmingly stupid, and we're gonna get to that in just one moment.
00:23:00.000 First, let's talk about how you can make your business More efficient.
00:23:04.000 Obviously, you've got to be on top of your data.
00:23:06.000 Very important for you to be on top of your data.
00:23:08.000 That is the only way to ensure that you know where your efficiencies and inefficiencies lie.

00:24:04.000 That's NetSuite.com slash Shapiro.
00:24:07.000 Okay, so President Trump's speech, as I mentioned, has some serious problems with the, you know, in general.
00:24:14.000 With that said, it's good that the president is now taking this seriously because his prior response has been insufficient.
00:24:18.000 And I've pointed this out.
00:24:19.000 The president has been giving very mixed messages on Twitter in public about the nature of coronavirus, about how much of a threat it is.
00:24:26.000 OK, so he is getting more serious about all of this without question.
00:24:30.000 And it is true that the administration's response, put Trump aside, the administration's response has been quite serious.
00:24:37.000 The fact is that Stephen Redd, who is one of the Trump key officials on all of this, Stephen Redd suggested yesterday that the coronavirus response is significantly larger than the American response to H1N1, which was a major epidemic that happened in 2009.
00:24:54.000 It's a much larger response than we had for H1N1.
00:24:57.000 I think there are more sectors of government involved.
00:25:01.000 We didn't do a lot of the things that we're doing now because they weren't appropriate.
00:25:04.000 The border issues, we had cases here.
00:25:07.000 The pandemic was first recognized in the United States, so that's a totally different situation.
00:25:13.000 Okay, so that obviously is true.
00:25:16.000 Red is, by the way, the Assistant Surgeon General.
00:25:18.000 He also mentioned that President Trump's original Chinese travel restrictions were very useful, and this happens to be true.
00:25:24.000 Here is Stephen Red explaining that China's travel restrictions were correct.
00:25:28.000 I think that that was a period of time when we were, there's not really anything we would have done differently.
00:25:33.000 We were working on a diagnostic test.
00:25:35.000 We were sending materials that started the ball rolling on vaccine production.
00:25:39.000 We, you know, as you know, within weeks of identifying the outbreak, Really, the restriction of travel from China, reduced travel by 90%.
00:25:51.000 I think that was a very helpful move to prevent more cases from China coming into the United States.
00:25:58.000 Okay, with all of that said, Dr. Anthony Fauci is the head of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases.
00:26:04.000 He says we have to crack down on large crowds.
00:26:07.000 This is the next chief measure.
00:26:08.000 Again, the administration is on top of this to the extent that any federal administration is on top of it.
00:26:13.000 The problem has been the disconnect for Trump.
00:26:14.000 So Trump getting serious last night was a good thing, even if the speech was a bit of a screw-up.
00:26:17.000 Here's Anthony Fauci yesterday saying, no large crowds would be a good start.
00:26:22.000 We would recommend that there not be large crowds.
00:26:26.000 If that means not having any people in the audience when the NBA plays, so be it.
00:26:32.000 But as a public health official, anything that has large crowds is something that would give a risk to spread.
00:26:41.000 Now, there is some good news.
00:26:41.000 Fauci said we are reaching a stage one vaccine faster than anyone has ever reached a stage one vaccine.
00:26:47.000 So there's a bit of good news for you.
00:26:49.000 With regard to vaccines, as I've mentioned publicly many times, we were able to very quickly go from an understanding of what this virus was to what the genetic sequence was to actually developing a vaccine.
00:27:04.000 But there's a lot of confusion about developing a vaccine.
00:27:08.000 In the next, I would say, four weeks or so, we will go into what is called a Phase I clinical trial.
00:27:15.000 Getting it into Phase I in a matter of months is the quickest that anyone has ever done literally in the history of axonology.
00:27:23.000 Members of the government are also pointing out that while we are ramping up for widespread testing, it's gonna take another two weeks for widespread testing, which that, of course, is bad news.
00:27:31.000 That means more informational deficits at this point, all of which is bad news.
00:27:36.000 Now, as I say, the media's response to all of this has been absolutely egregious.
00:27:39.000 I don't just mean criticism of Trump.
00:27:41.000 All of that is fair.
00:27:42.000 If President Trump has to handle this better, his speech was not good.
00:27:46.000 He said in his Oval Office speech, the vast majority of Americans, the risk is very, very low.
00:27:53.000 Not the risk of actually getting it, the risk of dying.
00:27:55.000 I mean, that particularly is true.
00:27:57.000 With all of that said, the president also is getting criticized.
00:28:01.000 And here's where the media have really gone off the rails.
00:28:03.000 President Trump last night said that this is a major government response to a foreign virus.
00:28:09.000 It's the largest foreign, major response to a foreign virus.
00:28:11.000 And this immediately led people in the media to whine about the fact that Trump had said that the Wuhan virus is in fact a foreign virus.
00:28:18.000 Okay, I have a question.
00:28:20.000 Why is that a big deal?
00:28:21.000 It is a foreign virus.
00:28:22.000 Why is that a problem?
00:28:24.000 Is that an element of xenophobia?
00:28:26.000 Like seriously?
00:28:26.000 This is what you're focused on?
00:28:28.000 You're focused on the fact that Trump points out that another major virus comes from China?
00:28:33.000 And that maybe this might have some implications for American policy?
00:28:36.000 And your initial takeaway is that that's Trump being a racist against Chinese people?
00:28:40.000 That's really where you're going with this?
00:28:42.000 I'm sorry, I'm not going to consider you a serious person if you think it's a major problem for the President of the United States to point out that a foreign virus is indeed a foreign virus.
00:28:49.000 Literally the entire media two months ago was calling us the Wuhan virus.
00:28:52.000 Anyway, here is the brothers Cuomo, Chris and Andrew.
00:28:55.000 Chris interviewing Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York, about all of this, and Governor Cuomo very angry that Trump called the virus foreign.
00:29:02.000 This is not about a foreign virus, whatever that means.
00:29:05.000 It's here.
00:29:06.000 It's community spread.
00:29:08.000 It's much more prevalent than we know.
00:29:10.000 The testing does not reflect what it is.
00:29:14.000 These are not random sample tests.
00:29:18.000 It's because we have no testing capacity.
00:29:20.000 That's why the numbers are low.
00:29:22.000 If you actually had testing capacity, you would see how high the numbers are already.
00:29:28.000 Okay, so it is true that we need better testing capacity, but if you're really bitching at this point about calling it a foreign virus, your priorities are completely and utterly misplaced.
00:29:37.000 I mean, that is a disaster.
00:29:38.000 And you've seen additional media stupidity.
00:29:41.000 Don Lemon on CNN today, or last night, is on John Kasich.
00:29:44.000 Kasich is no friend of President Trump.
00:29:46.000 I mean, John Kasich hates President Trump.
00:29:49.000 And John Kasich was on, and he said, like, I thought that the president did okay.
00:29:52.000 Like, it was fine.
00:29:53.000 His speech was fine.
00:29:54.000 And Don Lemon lost his mind.
00:29:56.000 Lost his mind.
00:29:57.000 This is your media.
00:29:58.000 This is your very objective media.
00:29:59.000 Here's Don Lemon going after John Kasich.
00:30:04.000 The governors can't make choices.
00:30:05.000 There are no test kits.
00:30:07.000 If the test kits that the federal government has promised aren't out there, then those governors can't make choices.
00:30:13.000 And you said the president should stick to the script.
00:30:16.000 I don't know if he stuck to the script or not.
00:30:20.000 that whatever script he read was wrong because they've had to clarify it several times.
00:30:25.000 And I just got to say, if the president came out to calm people's fears, he didn't do a good job of it because they've had to come back and clarify it several times.
00:30:33.000 And this has been going on long enough for them to get it straight.
00:30:37.000 We need straight, accurate information from this president and this administration, and And I don't understand why you are tiptoeing around it.
00:30:46.000 He came out, gave an address that usually happens very rarely, and he doesn't get it right?
00:30:54.000 I'm going to tell you.
00:30:54.000 First of all, he read it, and somebody that wrote this.
00:30:57.000 Look, I don't want to get into that.
00:30:59.000 Why not?
00:30:59.000 That's why you're here, to talk about the president's address.
00:31:03.000 He says, can I finish?
00:31:04.000 And Don Lemon says, no, you can't finish.
00:31:06.000 Because Don Lemon has an agenda here, and the agenda is to paint Trump as obviously incompetent and terrible at everything.
00:31:11.000 Again, there are real problems with the speech, but let's be real about this.
00:31:15.000 The speech is not the problem.
00:31:17.000 The problem is lack of information.
00:31:19.000 What the president says makes a difference but the markets were not going to respond well anyway to the fact that we have a tremendous lack of information.
00:31:26.000 The president is obviously on a personal level taking everything a lot more seriously.
00:31:30.000 The president is meeting with a prime minister today and they agreed not to shake hands and Trump said it's a strange feeling for politicians because handshaking is routine.
00:31:38.000 Again, the media have an agenda here.
00:31:40.000 Their agenda is to paint Trump as... Several things can be true at once.
00:31:43.000 One, Trump is not doing the world's best job of handling this thing on a personal level.
00:31:47.000 Two, the Trump administration is doing everything that it can, and they're doing just as much as any other administration would.
00:31:52.000 Anthony Fauci has served in several different administrations.
00:31:55.000 And governors like Gavin Newsom from California are saying they're getting what they need from the federal government.
00:31:59.000 Three, nobody has this thing under control.
00:32:01.000 And four, the media wants to see Trump fall flat on his face and they are eager to paint Trump as unable to handle this whole thing.
00:32:08.000 So all of those things can be true at once.
00:32:10.000 And in fact, all of those things are true at once.
00:32:12.000 In just a second, we're gonna get to more media malfeasance, the media really, really trying to play up the idea that the federal government's response is not only insufficient, but uniquely insufficient because Trump, because everything is Trump.
00:32:25.000 We'll get to that in just one second.
00:32:26.000 First, let's talk about making your house look more beautiful.
00:32:29.000 Okay, you're going to be in it for a little while longer, it seems.
00:32:31.000 Seems like you may be spending some more time at home.
00:32:33.000 Well, after you're at home, take a look at those window coverings.
00:32:35.000 Do those look good to you?
00:32:36.000 Yeah, they don't look good to me either.
00:32:37.000 Pretty ugly.
00:32:38.000 Instead, what you need, a really nice set of blinds.

00:34:35.000 You're listening to the largest, fastest growing conservative podcast in the nation.
00:34:39.000 All righty.
00:34:45.000 So President Trump obviously getting rigged over the coal.
00:34:50.000 Mike Pence did a segment with Alison Camerota in which she was going after him really hard.
00:34:57.000 The role of the media is to ask very difficult questions of the Trump administration in the most unfair possible ways, and also to play on the gap between Trump's personal thin-skinnedness and the members of his administration.
00:35:09.000 This is something that the media have learned to play and play this game really well.
00:35:12.000 And that is, if you're a member of the Trump administration and Trump says something dumb, You're not allowed to go on TV and just say, yeah, the president shouldn't have said that.
00:35:18.000 Or, yeah, the president didn't mean that.
00:35:20.000 You're not allowed to do that because then Trump gets mad at you.
00:35:22.000 And so what the media have decided to do is basically hold every member of the Trump administration to account for anything dumb the president says.
00:35:30.000 Well, this is what Allison Camerota was doing today with Mike Pence, and it got pretty ugly.
00:35:36.000 President Trump's speech last night, after he talked about the travel ban from Europe, or travel restrictions, I guess I should say, from Europe, and the handling of cargo shipments, two clarifications basically had to be issued within the space of an hour.
00:35:52.000 One from DHS saying the travel restrictions do not apply to all travel, and then the president himself tweeted he didn't mean cargo.
00:36:01.000 So why the confusion?
00:36:04.000 I don't think there was confusion.
00:36:06.000 The president took another historic step, just like he did in January with China, to suspend all travel from Europe, Alison, for the next 30 days because we've recognized, our health experts tracking global data, that the epicenter of the coronavirus has shifted from China and South Korea to Europe.
00:36:31.000 Okay, so again, this is being trotted around the media as evidence that Pence won't talk up to Trump.
00:36:36.000 Okay, look, we all know the situation here.
00:36:38.000 The situation here is that the president has personal character flaws when it comes to being thin-skinned.
00:36:42.000 He doesn't want anybody in his administration contradicting him.
00:36:44.000 And Trump isn't the guy who wrote the speech or loaded the teleprompter.
00:36:47.000 Listen, the buck stops with the president.
00:36:50.000 With that said...
00:36:52.000 Again, whoever put that crap in the teleprompter needs to be fired, like, forthwith, really.
00:36:57.000 You put an error-ridden speech in the middle of a global pandemic in the president's teleprompter, you ought to be fired.
00:37:02.000 Like, seriously, there's some heads that need to roll.
00:37:05.000 Now, we should be in the business not of looking for a head rolling at this point, but we should be in the business of seeing what the response ought to look like.
00:37:13.000 And right now, the answer is nobody knows what the hell the response ought to look like.
00:37:17.000 What we do know is that pumping is not going to be the solution.
00:37:20.000 President Trump has been fixated to this point on the stock market, and he continues to be fixated on the stock market.
00:37:25.000 Today he was talking about how the stock market is going to be just fine.
00:37:27.000 Maybe it will, but only in response to an underlying ease in terms of what we know about coronavirus.
00:37:33.000 Right now, people are blaming this on Trump, right?
00:37:35.000 Trump's response to coronavirus.
00:37:36.000 That's why the stock market is dropping.
00:37:38.000 No.
00:37:38.000 The reality is what people were looking for from the president last night was a reassurance everything was under control.
00:37:43.000 Trump can't give that reassurance because no one can.
00:37:45.000 The Prime Minister of Italy can't do it.
00:37:47.000 The Prime Minister of Israel can't do it.
00:37:48.000 The Prime Minister of Ireland can't do it.
00:37:51.000 The head of the WHO can't do it.
00:37:52.000 What would Trump have said last night that really would have calmed markets?
00:37:54.000 Seriously.
00:37:55.000 The answer is nothing.
00:37:56.000 If Trump had said, OK, you know what we're going to do tomorrow?
00:37:58.000 We're shutting down all public gatherings across the nation.
00:38:00.000 We're going to request nobody go to an event with more than 100 people.
00:38:04.000 What do you think the stock market would have done this morning?
00:38:05.000 It would have dumped.
00:38:06.000 It was gonna dump anyway.
00:38:07.000 There's not enough information out there.
00:38:09.000 So that's not Trump's fault.
00:38:10.000 With that said, President Trump's bizarre notion that if the Fed just eases money, that somehow the stock market's gonna be propped up, that if we go to negative interest rates, that we're somehow gonna prop up the market.
00:38:20.000 No one is spending.
00:38:21.000 No one is going out.
00:38:22.000 You have a serious underlying problem.
00:38:24.000 If no one is consuming, then there's nobody who's actually going to be hiring.
00:38:28.000 And if nobody is hiring, there's going to be a lack of people who are capable of buying things.
00:38:33.000 We're entering recession territory.
00:38:35.000 We are.
00:38:36.000 Now, there are certain things that can be done to stopgap this thing, right?
00:38:39.000 We can have, as we mentioned, a payroll tax holiday.
00:38:41.000 There have been conservatives urging the federal government to basically sign unemployment checks for people who are unemployed for the period that coronavirus requires you to stay home.
00:38:50.000 We've had talk about paid sick leave.
00:38:53.000 There's fairly wide bipartisan support for a lot of these proposals, at least in the short term, because an emergency is an emergency.
00:39:00.000 But with that said, all of the blame being cast on Trump, it's too much.
00:39:05.000 It's too much.
00:39:05.000 Trump certainly could have handled this better.
00:39:07.000 He continues to need to handle this better.
00:39:10.000 But the suggestion that Trump is not taking this seriously right now is ridiculous.
00:39:13.000 Jim Acosta tried this yesterday.
00:39:14.000 Jim Acosta from CNN asked Trump specifically if he was taking this seriously enough, and Trump ended him.
00:39:20.000 Mr. President, what do you say to Americans who are concerned that you're not taking this seriously enough and that some of your statements don't match what your health experts are saying?
00:39:29.000 That's CNN fake news.
00:39:30.000 Go ahead.
00:39:30.000 Thank you very much.
00:39:33.000 Okay, so there he is ending Jim Acosta.
00:39:35.000 Meanwhile, the media trying to prop up Joe Biden as the alternative.
00:39:38.000 Remember, there are always political ramifications for all of this.
00:39:42.000 A month ago, President Trump was on a solid path to re-election.
00:39:45.000 He was running against an old croned socialist by the name of Bernie Sanders.
00:39:50.000 The stock market was at 29,000.
00:39:52.000 And President Trump was leading in all the swing states.
00:39:54.000 Now the stock market is at 21,000.
00:39:55.000 Bernie Sanders is out of the race.
00:39:58.000 And President Trump is tweeting things.
00:40:00.000 Okay, so things change fast in politics.
00:40:03.000 According to the New York Times, Joe Biden, seeking a contrast with Trump, will speak today on coronavirus.
00:40:07.000 So he's going to take to the microphones to try and show why he would be a better president than the president.
00:40:12.000 And presumably he will get all sorts of rich, rewarding media coverage.
00:40:15.000 Even if he can't actually say the word coronavirus properly because he is malfunctioning.
00:40:19.000 A day after President Trump addressed the nation about coronavirus amid criticism, he has minimized the threat of the pandemic.
00:40:24.000 According to The New York Times, Joe Biden plans to give his own remarks on the virus, seeking to project steadiness and resolve from his purchase frontrunner for the Democratic nomination.
00:40:32.000 His campaign announced its plans for the speech on Tuesday before Trump's Oval Office address.
00:40:36.000 A Biden official described the upcoming remarks as offering a view into how Biden will lead in times of crisis as president.
00:40:42.000 This is why President Trump botching that speech last night was not only bad for the country, it was bad politically.
00:40:47.000 On Wednesday, his campaign announced the formation of a public health advisory committee.
00:40:50.000 So he's going to run a shadow government to prove that he will be more competent than the president of the United States.
00:40:55.000 Members include Vivek Murthy, a former Surgeon General, Ezekiel Emanuel, one of the architects of Obamacare, and Lisa Monaco, who served as Homeland Security and counterterrorism advisor That is the opening, right?
00:41:05.000 You know that if this thing deepens, then all of the old comments that President Trump made about the flu, those are just going to be campaign ads.
00:41:09.000 Those are just going to be campaign ads.
00:41:11.000 has said he would insist on transparency from China and has expressed shock and frustration with Trump's past skeptical remarks.
00:41:18.000 That is the opening, right?
00:41:19.000 You know that if this thing deepens, then all of the old comments that President Trump made about the flu, those are just going to be campaign ads.
00:41:25.000 Those are just going to be campaign ads.
00:41:27.000 So Trump getting serious about this is not only necessary, it is worthwhile.
00:41:31.000 Again, with all of that said, it is pretty clear that Joe Biden is seeking to make hay.
00:41:36.000 The media are seeking to make hay.
00:41:37.000 I've said for a long time, President Trump needs to run a discipline campaign if he wishes to win.
00:41:41.000 The discipline extends to his actual presidency.
00:41:44.000 And as worries grow, as celebrities get this thing, as politicians get this thing, as it seems as though we have no data, Then calming presidential leadership is necessary at a time like this.
00:41:55.000 Calming is not a thing that President Trump tends to do.
00:41:58.000 Now, meanwhile, there still is a threat from inside the Democratic House.
00:42:00.000 So the best case scenario for President Trump is there's a V-shaped recovery.
00:42:03.000 In a month, month and a half, this thing calms down a little bit.
00:42:06.000 The social distancing measures take effect.
00:42:07.000 We have vaccines well on their way.
00:42:09.000 Summer hits and coronavirus diagnoses go down.
00:42:12.000 The death rate is not as high as we thought it was.
00:42:14.000 And then people buy up the stock market.
00:42:17.000 I mean, the fact is that people like me, if you're young, You have any sort of cash flow?
00:42:22.000 Continuing to buy into the stock market is a smart move because eventually, whether it's now or six months from now or a year from now, the stock market is not only going to recover, it's going to start zooming again, okay?
00:42:30.000 And you're going to make a lot of money.
00:42:32.000 Buying low and selling high is the name of the game in the stock market.
00:42:35.000 We haven't hit bottom yet.
00:42:36.000 Goldman Sachs is suggesting that we may drop another 15% on the stock market, which would put President Trump's stock market below where it was when President Trump took office.
00:42:44.000 Again, if you look at the chart, it's frightening.
00:42:45.000 I mean, the chart basically looks like Continue to arithmetic growth in the stock market and then boom, right off a cliff, thanks to Wuhan virus.
00:42:52.000 But the good news is that that does not reveal systemic failures of the American government.
00:42:57.000 What that does, or great underlying weaknesses like in the crash of 2007-2008, it just reveals a major global pandemic disruption of the system.
00:43:06.000 So that means that when the pandemic is over, or at least when it wanes, or at least when we think it's waning, then you're going to see presumably A V-shaped or U-shaped recovery.
00:43:06.000 It's not the system itself.
00:43:15.000 The question is whether that comes in time to help President Trump.
00:43:18.000 If, if it does, then maybe this thing is over by the time of the election.
00:43:22.000 Remember, things change really quickly in politics.
00:43:25.000 If we get to June and things have waned on coronavirus, and President Trump takes significant action, which is what he should be doing right now, then he'll be in fairly good shape.
00:43:31.000 He'll be able to say, listen, we did everything we could, we stopped coronavirus in its tracks, and it won't be an issue by the time we hit October, November.
00:43:39.000 That's best case scenario for President Trump.
00:43:40.000 Okay, but that requires some pretty solid leadership.
00:43:43.000 Meanwhile, inside the Democratic Party, the conflict continues to play out between the Bernie Sanders wing and the Joe Biden wing.
00:43:48.000 Yesterday, Bernie Sanders got up and he said, I am not dropping out of this race.
00:43:52.000 No matter what, I'm going to stick around.
00:43:54.000 He suggested we are winning the debate, but we're not winning the electability debate, which is a very weird argument.
00:43:59.000 Here is Bernie Sanders yesterday announcing that he is going to stay in the race despite the fact that he has no shot at winning the nomination.
00:44:05.000 While our campaign has won the ideological debate, We are losing the debate over electability.
00:44:14.000 I cannot tell you how many people our campaign has spoken to who have said, and I quote, I like what your campaign stands for.
00:44:26.000 I agree with what your campaign stands for.
00:44:31.000 But I'm going to vote for Joe Biden because I think Joe is the best candidate to defeat Donald Trump.
00:44:38.000 End of quote.
00:44:39.000 We have heard that statement all over this country.
00:44:42.000 Needless to say, I strongly disagree with that assertion.
00:44:47.000 Okay, so Bernie Sanders is not dropping out.
00:44:50.000 He says he looks forward to debating Joe Biden on Sunday.
00:44:52.000 Like, what is his strategy?
00:44:53.000 He has no way of winning the nomination.
00:44:55.000 Maybe his strategy is to stand in the shadows, and then as Joe Biden walks past, he just jumps out of the shadows and goes, boom!
00:45:02.000 And then...
00:45:02.000 Something bad happens to Joe Biden, that incapacitate.
00:45:04.000 I don't know what Bernie Sanders' strategy is for winning the nomination.
00:45:07.000 It clearly is not winning votes because he ain't going to win any votes.
00:45:11.000 Nonetheless, Sanders says he's staying in.
00:45:13.000 He looks forward to debating Biden.
00:45:14.000 That's a divide in the Democratic Party if there is a recovery from coronavirus, which, of course, is top priority for everybody.
00:45:18.000 If the country, if the world economy recovers.
00:45:21.000 The divide between Sanders and Biden is going to take on a lot larger status as the election approaches.
00:45:25.000 Here's Sanders saying he looks forward to debating Joe Biden for no apparent reason.
00:45:28.000 On Sunday, I very much look forward to the debate in Arizona with my friend Joe Biden.
00:45:35.000 Donald Trump must be defeated, and I will do everything in my power to make that happen.
00:45:43.000 On Sunday night, in the first one-on-one debate of this campaign, the American people will have the opportunity to see which candidate is best positioned to accomplish that goal.
00:45:57.000 Okay, so that is where we currently stand.
00:45:59.000 Basically, everything is on hold in serious terms because of coronavirus.
00:46:03.000 But if we move past coronavirus, then all of the political stuff is back on the table.
00:46:07.000 And obviously, it is true that coronavirus is being politicized by people who are looking for a political advantage.
00:46:12.000 President Trump ought not hand people a club with which to hit him politically.
00:46:16.000 Plus, I mean, he is, putting aside politics for a second, he's the leader of the free world.
00:46:20.000 He's the leader of the most powerful country on the planet.
00:46:22.000 He's the leader of the country in which you live.
00:46:24.000 Competence is necessary.
00:46:26.000 Calming is necessary.
00:46:27.000 Exactitude is necessary.
00:46:29.000 Stop with the Twitter crap.
00:46:30.000 Stop with downplaying the virus.
00:46:32.000 Stop with suggesting that the market is going to be just fine.
00:46:36.000 Bottom line is, what we need right now is solid, concerted leadership from the President of the United States and his administration.
00:46:42.000 No slipshod crap.
00:46:43.000 Enough.
00:46:44.000 Okay?
00:46:44.000 You live in the country.
00:46:45.000 I live in the country.
00:46:46.000 We all want to see this thing end.
00:46:48.000 Also, we all want to look out for each other.
00:46:50.000 What we need right now is a level of seriousness that I think Trump started to evidence last night.
00:46:54.000 It needs to continue forward, and he needs to not get caught up in all the political back and forth with Democrats.
00:46:59.000 People are not up for this anyway.
00:47:00.000 If the Democrats decide to over-politicize this thing, it will backfire on them, and Trump should know that.
00:47:04.000 Trump's job right now is to lead.
00:47:06.000 He's the president of the United States, and he's been absolved from a lot of the responsibilities of leadership by the fact that we've already baked into the cake that the man's going to tweet a lot.
00:47:13.000 But when you're in the middle of a serious national or international crisis like this, there is no substitute for leadership.
00:47:19.000 It's time for the president to step up and get it done.
00:47:21.000 Okay, time for a couple of things I like and then a thing that I hate.
00:47:24.000 So, as long as you're gonna be self-quarantining, I just restarted Better Call Saul.
00:47:28.000 So, Better Call Saul is a spinoff from Breaking Bad.
00:47:30.000 If you've never seen Breaking Bad, go stream it.
00:47:31.000 That'll take you a couple of weeks.
00:47:32.000 And then, they made a spinoff called Better Call Saul, which is about...
00:47:36.000 which was about the lawyer character in Breaking Bad.
00:47:39.000 I watched the first season.
00:47:40.000 I thought it was fairly good.
00:47:41.000 I started the second season recently because I had heard that it got better.
00:47:44.000 And it is indeed a fantastically well-written show.
00:47:47.000 Vince Gilligan, who's behind the show, is a tremendously talented dude.
00:47:50.000 So check out Better Call Saul.
00:47:51.000 Here's the trailer for season one.
00:47:52.000 You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Hamlin, and I won't have it.
00:48:03.000 What can we do for you, Jimmy?
00:48:06.000 What Chuck did for this firm, one third of this place belongs to him.
00:48:10.000 If Chuck can call this an extended sabbatical, then so can we.
00:48:13.000 You know I'm going to beat this.
00:48:16.000 It's time to do right by him and cash him out.
00:48:18.000 Hamlin's making you a chump!
00:48:20.000 I'm going to get better!
00:48:22.000 Chuck, I'm going under.
00:48:23.000 Whose side are you on?
00:48:25.000 Okay, so as long as you're staying home, the streaming services are gonna do great.
00:48:29.000 By the way, go subscribe to Daily Wire.
00:48:30.000 We're gonna have lots of content during this self-quarantine period.
00:48:34.000 But Better Call Saul is definitely worth the watch.
00:48:36.000 You can go check that out today.
00:48:37.000 Okay, time for a couple of things that I hate.
00:48:43.000 Alrighty, so a couple of things.
00:48:44.000 First, Farhad Manjoo has a really dumb column today.
00:48:47.000 It's called the Republicans want Medicare for all, but just for this one disease.
00:48:50.000 Everyone's a socialist in a pandemic.
00:48:52.000 Okay, let's just be clear about something.
00:48:55.000 Even libertarians, when it comes to policing externalities, when it comes to collective action and the necessity of fighting a collective threat, are not libertarians.
00:49:05.000 Everyone knows this.
00:49:07.000 Libertarian principles do not apply in wartime.
00:49:10.000 There are not a lot of libertarians who think that we should disband the U.S.
00:49:12.000 Army.
00:49:13.000 There are not a lot of libertarians who believe that in a time of pandemic, we shouldn't collectively mobilize and use the resources at our disposal to prevent externalities.
00:49:21.000 Okay, two, the idiocy is trying to equate a pandemic situation with you have a non-communicable disease or you have a disease that's not going to kill anybody else.
00:49:31.000 And when you're talking about a pandemic, I've been saying this for years, okay?
00:49:33.000 I'm pretty libertarian when it comes to vaccinations.
00:49:37.000 I do believe in regulations at the school level that you shouldn't be able to come to school unless you are vaccinated.
00:49:42.000 Why?
00:49:42.000 Because those have externalities.
00:49:44.000 That is not anti-libertarian.
00:49:45.000 Only morons think that a pandemic situation is the same thing as you have cancer coverage through your health insurance.
00:49:52.000 It's not Medicare for all, it's called shutting down externalities.
00:49:56.000 The people at Reason Magazine wouldn't even argue with this.
00:49:58.000 Charles W. Cook, C.W.
00:50:00.000 Cook, over at National Review, a libertarian, is fully on board with the idea of government action in times of crisis like this, when there is a collective threat to the collective, because you can't avoid the threat.
00:50:12.000 Okay, the idiocy of people on the left suggesting that every situation is a crisis situation and therefore Medicare for All is the same thing as taking care of the population during a pandemic, that's nonsense.
00:50:21.000 Not only is it nonsense, it's idiotic nonsense.
00:50:24.000 So Farhad Manjoo, who is replete with idiotic nonsense, he has a piece today where he says, all it took was a pandemic of potentially unprecedented scale and severity and suddenly it's like we're turning into Denmark over here.
00:50:33.000 In the last few days, a parade of American companies that had long resisted providing humane and necessary benefits to their workers abruptly changed their minds, announcing plans to pay and protect even their lowest rung employees harmed by the ravages of coronavirus.
00:50:44.000 Okay, first of all, that would not be the government.
00:50:48.000 So where's the socialism?
00:50:49.000 If Mark Cuban, the head of the Dallas Mavericks, the owner, if he suggests that he's going to come out of pocket and make sure that furloughed workers get paid, What does that have to do with the government?
00:50:58.000 The answer is nothing.
00:50:59.000 So how is that Denmarkian?
00:51:00.000 Uber and Lyft, which are currently fighting state efforts to force them to pay benefits to drivers and other gig workers, announced that actually a form of paid sick leave wasn't such a bad idea overall.
00:51:08.000 Again, these are private companies.
00:51:11.000 Drivers who contract the new virus or who are placed in quarantine will get paid for up to two weeks, said Uber.
00:51:15.000 Why are they doing that?
00:51:16.000 Because they don't want the responsibility of a driver going out there and then getting the passenger sick and then Uber's on the hook.
00:51:21.000 Trader Joe's says it will cover for time off for the virus.
00:51:24.000 Again, all of these are private companies.
00:51:25.000 What the hell does that have to do with government intervention?
00:51:29.000 He's such an idiot, he's not even citing instances of government intervention, of which there are plenty.
00:51:35.000 It wasn't just sick leave.
00:51:36.000 Overnight, workplaces around the country were transformed into Scandinavian Edens of flexibility.
00:51:40.000 Can't make it to the office because your kid has to unexpectedly stay home from school?
00:51:43.000 Last week, it sucked to be you.
00:51:44.000 This week, what are you even doing asking?
00:51:46.000 Go home.
00:51:47.000 Be with your kid.
00:51:48.000 Again, voluntary action by private... He's proving the exact opposite of what he thinks he's proving.
00:51:52.000 Private industry is acting responsibly in many ways in order to minimize the risk of the spread of this virus.
00:51:57.000 More responsibly than the damned government, which has been lax in nearly every respect on this thing, lagged a month behind, and didn't get the testing kits out anywhere.
00:52:05.000 So, I mean, if anything, this column is proving that private industry is doing the crap that government has been unable to do thus far.
00:52:10.000 It doesn't mean that government is unnecessary.
00:52:12.000 Government is very necessary when it comes to providing the testing kits.
00:52:15.000 Although private labs, by the way, are the ones that are going to have to ramp up production in order to make sure that those testing kits are available.
00:52:22.000 But it's just amazing that you can conflate private voluntary action with government action and then call it Denmark.
00:52:27.000 Pretty amazing.
00:52:29.000 Then, here's where Farhad Manjoo finally gets to government programs.
00:52:32.000 The Trump administration, last seen proposing to slash a pay raise for federal workers and endorsing a family leave policy that doesn't actually pay for family leave, is now singing the praises of universal sick pay.
00:52:41.000 When we tell people if you're sick, stay home, the president has tasked the team with developing economic policies that will make it very, very clear we're going to stand by those hardworking Americans.
00:52:49.000 Vice President Pence said on Monday, offering the sort of rhetoric that wouldn't be out of places on the page of Jacobin.
00:52:54.000 Okay, the difference is you're talking about a widespread pandemic.
00:52:57.000 It is very difficult to determine whether people are truly sick or whether they are truly not if you're talking about government provide paid sick leave.
00:53:04.000 Okay, this has been a serious problem in terms of American disability.
00:53:07.000 A huge number of Americans who are on disability are not actually disabled.
00:53:10.000 They are people who claim disability, and then they are on disability because they say they have back pain or something.
00:53:15.000 Disability fraud's a serious problem.
00:53:17.000 Now, in a pandemic, the answer is, okay, well, the risk of people coming into work is a lot higher than the risk of people defrauding the system.
00:53:25.000 You gotta keep people home, even if it means that you're paying some people to fraudulently stay home.
00:53:30.000 But that's because the risk factors changed, you idiot.
00:53:34.000 Representative Ted Yoho, Republican from Florida, said, you can look at it as socialized medicine, but in the face of an outbreak of pandemic, what's your options?
00:53:41.000 As I said, it's almost funny.
00:53:42.000 Everyone's a socialist to pandemic.
00:53:44.000 Yes, and everyone is more of a socialist in wartime.
00:53:46.000 Collective reactions are necessary for collective threats, but medicine is not a collective threat.
00:53:52.000 You having an individual case of a particular disease that is not communicable is not a matter of everybody's interest financially.
00:53:59.000 That doesn't mean there aren't All sorts of things that we can do as a society and as communities to make sure that people get health insurance, we can.
00:54:07.000 But to pretend that all situations are equal is the idiocy of the simple-minded.
00:54:11.000 To pretend that pandemic situations are equivalent to non-pandemic situations, it's ridiculous.
00:54:16.000 It's ridiculous on its face.
00:54:17.000 But that's what Farhad Manjoo does for a living.
00:54:20.000 Okay, one more thing that I hate.
00:54:21.000 So, Mara Gay, who is one of the leading forces behind the 1619 Project, and who was a leading factor in the myriad mistakes of the 1619 Project.
00:54:32.000 The other week, we were making fun of her, but really making fun of Brian Williams, because Brian Williams brought up a tweet on MSNBC.
00:54:39.000 And the tweet on MSNBC suggested that Michael Bloomberg could have paid everybody a million dollars.
00:54:45.000 And still had money left over.
00:54:46.000 He could have paid everybody in the United States a million dollars for as much money as he spent on the campaign.
00:54:52.000 That, of course, is not true.
00:54:53.000 Okay, Mara Gay was there.
00:54:54.000 She laughed along.
00:54:55.000 He sort of laughed at her a little bit, but I said on the show, that's not Mara Gay's fault.
00:54:58.000 Like, I feel kind of bad for her, honestly, because the fact is that she's just a guest.
00:55:01.000 What, you're going to fact check Brian Williams in real time?
00:55:03.000 Okay, but because people were making fun of her, now we get a full column from Mara Gay in the New York Times talking about how it's racist To make fun of her for screwing things up.
00:55:12.000 Okay, as somebody who has been made fun of for screwing things up before, let me just say that, um, that's just called life.
00:55:20.000 That's called life.
00:55:21.000 But Mara Gay literally wrote a piece for the New York Times called, When you're a black woman in America with a public voice, a trivial math error can lead to a deluge of hate.
00:55:31.000 Spare me.
00:55:32.000 Spare me the hysterics, Mara Gay.
00:55:34.000 You're a member of the editorial board of the New York Times.
00:55:36.000 You were on national TV.
00:55:38.000 You screwed up.
00:55:38.000 It wasn't a big deal.
00:55:40.000 People kind of made fun of it.
00:55:41.000 That was it.
00:55:42.000 And yes, there are always idiots who are going to send you nasty hate mail.
00:55:45.000 I've gotten more nasty hate mail, I would bet, by scores than anybody at the New York Times editorial board.
00:55:50.000 But The idea that my people have been through worse than a... Yes, I'm fairly well aware that black people in America have been through a lot worse, like slavery and Jim Crow, than you taking a little bit of heat for making a dumb mistake on MSNBC.
00:56:04.000 But to suggest that, like, this is anywhere on par, or that this is racist, it's such a New York Times... It's such a New York Times... Like, Brian Williams got hit for this, too.
00:56:12.000 He's white.
00:56:13.000 But Mara Gay says, On MSNBC's The 11th Hour with Brian Williams, the night before, we mentioned a tweet written by someone else about the enormous amount of money Michael Bloomberg had spent on his failed presidential run, about $500 million.
00:56:23.000 Here's what I said.
00:56:24.000 Somebody tweeted recently that actually with the money he spent, he could have given every American a million dollars.
00:56:28.000 The math, as a few people have pointed out, was wrong.
00:56:31.000 Overnight, I'd become an online sensation and not in a good way.
00:56:33.000 The video had gone viral, first shared by the right wing and then by seemingly everyone else too.
00:56:37.000 Some people seemed surprised I couldn't fact check arithmetic on live TV.
00:56:40.000 Let me assure you, my high school math teachers were not among those people.
00:56:43.000 Given my history with math, I thought the flub was pretty funny.
00:56:45.000 I tried to laugh it off.
00:56:45.000 Buying a calculator, I wrote on Twitter on Friday.
00:56:47.000 Be right back.
00:56:49.000 In a normal time, that would have been the end of it, but the country has lost its mind, so instead, it was only the beginning.
00:56:54.000 Okay, well, no, it kind of wasn't.
00:56:56.000 like she says across social media right-wing trolls celebrated the next time they make a mistake i hope people are nicer to them than they were to me how did this end up on tv one of them helpfully wrote sharing the video unfortunately quite a few americans can tell you what it's like to be the target of a twitter mob over a gaff migrates in was trivial harmless and silly what's it like when people are trying to cancel you for a math mistake weird and maddening and painful okay nobody nobody was there a single person who suggested margay should be fired over the math mistake Like anyone?
00:57:22.000 The answer is no.
00:57:23.000 But she says, of course.
00:57:24.000 In my case, it wasn't really about math, as anyone who read through my mentions on Twitter or saw my inbox would know.
00:57:28.000 You're a great example of why we need to end affirmative action.
00:57:31.000 Someone named Jim B. wrote me in an email this weekend, get a job scrubbing floors.
00:57:34.000 It's the only thing you're good for.
00:57:35.000 Okay, so now she's just gonna go through her mailbox and find all the racists in her mailbox.
00:57:38.000 This is the easiest game in the world.
00:57:40.000 If I found you all the anti-Semites in my mailbox, I could do full shows just reading the anti-Semitism in my mailbox.
00:57:46.000 Guess what?
00:57:47.000 Who cares?
00:57:47.000 But the sort of self-sacrificial, woe is me, I'm a heroine of the movement because I'm a black person on TV, and therefore any criticism of me is criticism of blackness as opposed to me making a dumb math mistake.
00:57:57.000 Again, I thought the reaction was overwhelmingly stupid to Maragay's dumb mistake, but to suggest that it's because of overwhelming American racism, it's ridiculous.
00:58:05.000 She says, many of those Americans She says, when I appeared on that TV program last week, I'd been working for many days interviewing black voters in the South who were determined to defeat Donald Trump, whom they see as the nightmare embodiment of the old hatreds many of them fought to overcome.
00:58:19.000 Many of those Americans had survived far worse under the racial terror of Jim Crow than anything I can imagine.
00:58:23.000 I thought about the black man I met at the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, who had been beaten bloody by the police there half a century ago.
00:58:29.000 I thought about the older black woman who approached me in a Selma coffee shop.
00:58:32.000 I thought about my father, who grew up enduring the daily indignities of segregated South Carolina and Detroit.
00:58:36.000 I'm here because of them, and there's nothing the haters can do about it.
00:58:39.000 Okay, was anybody arguing with that?
00:58:41.000 Like, seriously, who's arguing with that?
00:58:43.000 And why are you comparing yourself to that?
00:58:45.000 It's not the same thing at all.
00:58:47.000 The self-pitying of, oh, I made a mistake on TV, people made fun of me, it must be because of my race.
00:58:52.000 You can always find idiots to say things.
00:58:54.000 You can always find idiots to say things.
00:58:56.000 Seriously, not hard.
00:58:57.000 Alrighty, well, we'll be back later today with two additional hours, if my voice holds up.
00:59:01.000 If not, then we'll be back here tomorrow.
00:59:02.000 I'm Ben Shapiro, this is The Ben Shapiro Show.

00:59:34.000 President Trump addresses the coronavirus epidemic from the Oval Office.
00:59:38.000 We will examine how we're all gonna die.
00:59:40.000 Then, Bernie refuses to drop out of the race.
00:59:43.000 A mathematically-challenged New York Times editorial board member cries racism when people correct her.
00:59:48.000 And AOC says it's racist not to eat lo mein.
00:59:51.000 All that, plus the mailbag.
