The Ben Shapiro Show - Trump Returns To The White House | Ep. 1109

00:00:00.000 Trump returns to the White House and causes new controversy with his masking habits.

00:00:04.000 Trump tweets optimistically about COVID and the media lose their minds.

00:00:07.000 And Joe Biden continues to skate toward the presidency.

00:00:09.000 I'm Ben Shapiro.

00:00:09.000 This is the Ben Shapiro Show.

00:00:19.000 It's how my listeners secure their internet.

00:00:21.000 Join them at expressvpn.com slash Ben.

00:00:24.000 Well, we will get to all the news in just one moment.

00:00:26.000 First, wouldn't it be nice if you could just save money on all of your phone needs?

00:00:32.000 So here is the reality.

00:00:33.000 You are paying far too much.

00:00:34.000 Far too much on your cell phone bill.

00:00:36.000 If your cellular plan is with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, you're paying way too much for the exact same coverage you could be getting right now with Pure Talk USA.

00:00:44.000 Take a look at your cell phone bill where it shows data usage.

00:00:46.000 The average person who switches to Pure Talk is using less than 4 gigs of data a month.

00:00:50.000 The big carriers are charging you for unlimited data, which is like paying for an entire row on an airplane but only needing one seat.

00:00:56.000 Well, PeerTalk will save the average person over $400 a year on their wireless service, with unlimited talk and text, and 2 gigs of data all for just $20 a month.

00:01:03.000 And if you go over on data usage, they're not going to charge you for it.

00:01:05.000 So exactly what do you have to lose?

00:01:07.000 Folks, switching to PeerTalk gets very, very easy, and it's going to save you a bundle.

00:01:11.000 Grab your mobile phone, dial pound 250, and say my name, Ben Shapiro.

00:01:15.000 When you do, you save 50% off.

00:01:17.000 Your very first month.

00:01:18.000 Dial pound 250.

00:01:18.000 Say keyword Ben Shapiro.

00:01:20.000 Pure Talk is simply smarter wireless.

00:01:22.000 You're going to save money on your cell phone bill.

00:01:24.000 And frankly, you can use the money.

00:01:25.000 So why exactly would you not go and do that?

00:01:28.000 Dial pound 250.

00:01:29.000 Say Ben Shapiro once more.

00:01:30.000 Dial pound 250 and say Ben Shapiro to get started with Pure Talk USA.

00:01:35.000 You could be saving up to half of your money on your cell phone bill.

00:01:38.000 Okay, so big news of the day yesterday is that President Trump made his grand return to the White House, and it was a return with style.

00:01:45.000 See, this is the thing that Trump is best at.

00:01:46.000 He is best at the imagery.

00:01:48.000 He is best at the sort of reality TV of the presidency.

00:01:52.000 Now, is it always appropriate?

00:01:53.000 No.

00:01:54.000 Is sometimes it very, very weird?

00:01:56.000 Sure, but the guy definitely knows how to do imagery.

00:01:59.000 We're going to get to the imagery, the pure imagistic magnificence of the president disembarking From the helicopter and going into the White House yesterday.

00:02:10.000 We'll get to that in a second.

00:02:12.000 But that was actually not the first controversy of the day yesterday, if we were gonna recount controversies.

00:02:15.000 The first controversy of the day is that Trump tweeted optimistically, and you are apparently no longer allowed to do this.

00:02:20.000 So Trump tweeted out yesterday, I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6.30 p.m., feeling really good.

00:02:26.000 Don't be afraid of COVID.

00:02:27.000 Don't let it dominate your life.

00:02:28.000 We have developed under the Trump administration some really great drugs and knowledge.

00:02:31.000 I feel better than I did 20 years ago.

00:02:34.000 Well, probably that has less to do with the COVID than it has to do with, you know, going like three full days without the Diet Coke and the Hot Wings.

00:02:40.000 But with that said, when Trump says, don't be afraid of COVID, this is what set people off.

00:02:45.000 So he is correct that you shouldn't be afraid to live your life.

00:02:48.000 The problem is that there are a lot of people who kind of should be afraid of COVID.

00:02:51.000 I mean, if you are above the age of 70, then this thing is pretty deadly.

00:02:54.000 If you're above the age of 70, About 5% of people who acquire the disease above the age of 70 could die from it, which is a very high number.

00:03:01.000 If you are 20, then you should not be afraid of COVID, and he is right about this.

00:03:04.000 So the fear level that you have with COVID has to be tranched by population, as we have been saying from the very outset.

00:03:10.000 This is why when you hear Scientists say things like, we can't pursue herd immunity.

00:03:13.000 We have to stop pursuing herd immunity.

00:03:16.000 If what you mean is we shouldn't let the virus simply run roughshod through the population and hit everybody equally, that of course is true.

00:03:22.000 Nobody wants to see this wipe through nursing homes the same way that it did the first time around. 0.68

00:03:25.000 If, however, you mean that we have to stop everybody who is 20 from getting COVID, that's incredibly silly.

00:03:30.000 Because if you're 20 and you get COVID, You're gonna be fine.

00:03:33.000 I mean, by and large, you're going to be fine.

00:03:34.000 That doesn't mean that a few people who are under the age of 20 aren't going to die.

00:03:37.000 Some people will, but the rate of death from COVID, you obtain COVID and you're 20 years old, your rate of death is something like one in 10,000, maybe two in 10,000.

00:03:47.000 In other words, not the kind of risk that you take into account when you go about your daily life.

00:03:53.000 And that's if you obtain the thing, not even if you're just walking around as a 20-year-old, because your chances of obtaining the thing as a 20-year-old are not 100% anyway.

00:04:00.000 So should you be walking around afraid?

00:04:03.000 Probably not.

00:04:04.000 But everybody gets very angry at Trump for saying, don't be afraid of the virus.

00:04:08.000 Apparently you're supposed to be afraid.

00:04:09.000 You're not supposed to be careful and cautious, which of course is perfectly appropriate.

00:04:14.000 You're not supposed to take things seriously, which again is perfectly appropriate.

00:04:17.000 You're supposed to live in deep and abiding fear of the virus.

00:04:21.000 You're supposed to walk around each day with just an inane sense of dread that this virus is going to get you and it is going to come out of the woodwork and it is going to kill you.

00:04:30.000 And again, the stats do not back this up, generally speaking.

00:04:33.000 Just like any other disease, it will kill some people.

00:04:35.000 This is not the bubonic plague, however, and the death rates on this thing are not the rates of Ebola.

00:04:40.000 So the question as to how much fear you should have on a daily basis should be connected to the data in some way, shape, or form.

00:04:46.000 For the media, however, they have been deliberately, for months, hiding the data so that you don't actually know your relative risk factor.

00:04:52.000 This is why polls have shown that Americans think that this thing is, like, Somewhere between 50 and 100 times more deadly than it actually is.

00:04:59.000 Meaning if you ask the average American, out of 1,000 people who get COVID, how many are going to die?

00:05:04.000 A lot of people are going to tell you, you know, maybe 100.

00:05:06.000 Okay, it's not even close.

00:05:08.000 Even for the most vulnerable subgroups of the population, it's not close to that particular number.

00:05:12.000 So how much fear should you have?

00:05:14.000 Depends on your risk factors.

00:05:15.000 Depends on your age.

00:05:16.000 But should you be walking around in deep fear every day as opposed to, you know, with a certain amount of caution?

00:05:21.000 Of course not.

00:05:22.000 Now, that doesn't mean that Trump himself exemplifies that caution, and herein lies the problem.

00:05:27.000 Let's say that all the way back in March or April, Trump had done something very, very simple with the virus.

00:05:33.000 Just to look in on sort of his messaging strategy. 0.60

00:05:36.000 Let's say that President Trump had taken a look at the virus and he said, listen, these lockdowns suck. 0.97

00:05:40.000 They are bad. 0.99

00:05:40.000 They are counterproductive. 0.99

00:05:41.000 They do not do what they are supposed to do.

00:05:44.000 They suppress the virus for the moment, which is what they are supposed to do, but they do not crush the virus, which is what people are now saying, right?

00:05:49.000 We gotta crush the virus with lockdowns.

00:05:51.000 You can't crush the virus with lockdowns, which is why when the lockdowns are alleviated, literally everywhere this is tried, There is some level of community spread.

00:06:00.000 So how exactly do you, quote-unquote, stop the virus?

00:06:03.000 Well, either the virus is at such low levels that you can actually test and trace it and then you mandatorily quarantine people the way that they were doing in China or the way that they were doing in South Korea.

00:06:11.000 That is one strategy, presumably.

00:06:13.000 The other strategy is that you're going to have to let it run through particularly healthy segments of the population at a low level with social distancing, with masking, taking precautions so you don't overrun the hospital system.

00:06:24.000 And then you move on with your life.

00:06:25.000 And that's sort of what Sweden has done, right?

00:06:26.000 There was some masking, a little bit, not too much.

00:06:29.000 There's a lot of social distancing in Sweden.

00:06:31.000 And they never shut down the schools and they never shut down the businesses.

00:06:34.000 And now community spread in Sweden is very, very low.

00:06:36.000 Well, with its neighbors, it is significantly higher.

00:06:39.000 So what if Trump back in April said, listen, lockdowns, they're not a good idea.

00:06:44.000 We shouldn't do them.

00:06:45.000 But in order for you to get back to work, what you should do is you should socially distance and you should mask up when you're in a crowded area.

00:06:49.000 And then we can all get back to work and we can learn to live with the virus.

00:06:52.000 What if he had said that as opposed to this sort of back and forth on whether masks are good or not, the sort of dismissive language with regards to masks, the sort of unwillingness to abide by basic social distancing protocols?

00:07:03.000 If Trump had done all of those things, it wouldn't have left an opening for Joe Biden, which Joe Biden is running a truck through right now.

00:07:10.000 With that said, the media took the other side from Trump because no matter what Trump does, the media will do the opposite.

00:07:15.000 One of the amazing things that is happening right now in the United States is that you see how the left has gone full pro-lockdown?

00:07:21.000 Well, if you take a look at Israel, by way of contrast, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, is a right-wing Prime Minister, right?

00:07:26.000 He's a Likud Prime Minister.

00:07:28.000 He has pursued full-scale lockdown.

00:07:30.000 The people who are out in the streets protesting right now are the far leftists.

00:07:34.000 Which shows you just how reactionary politics is all the way around the world.

00:07:37.000 In America, anti-lockdown is right-wing.

00:07:40.000 In Israel, anti-lockdown is left-wing.

00:07:43.000 There are some religious parties who are also anti-lockdown in Israel.

00:07:46.000 But it does show you that the sort of reactionary sides of the political debate, they tend to react to whomever is in power as opposed to reacting to the policy itself.

00:07:56.000 Anyway, Trump tweets, don't be afraid.

00:07:58.000 And the media immediately go, no, no, no, we have to be super duper afraid.

00:08:01.000 How could he say don't be afraid?

00:08:02.000 We should all live in fear.

00:08:03.000 We should live in abject fear of this virus.

00:08:05.000 No, you should not live in abject fear of the virus.

00:08:07.000 Again, you should look at your risk factors and then you should take responsible action to protect yourselves and members of your family.

00:08:13.000 My risk factors, I'm 36.

00:08:14.000 I have very, very minimal risk factors.

00:08:17.000 Thank God.

00:08:17.000 I am healthy.

00:08:18.000 I am young.

00:08:19.000 My parents' risk factors are more substantial.

00:08:21.000 They're in their mid-60s.

00:08:24.000 And my dad takes statins.

00:08:26.000 So, for that, that means that I take precautions when I'm around my parents.

00:08:29.000 Again, everyone can do this.

00:08:30.000 This is not all that difficult.

00:08:31.000 But nobody is willing to go to the halfway point.

00:08:34.000 So, Trump says, don't be afraid.

00:08:36.000 Which, if he were also saying, act responsibly on a regular basis, would be no problem.

00:08:39.000 He'd be exactly right.

00:08:41.000 Instead, he's sort of promoting this, it's not a big deal.

00:08:44.000 Meanwhile, the left goes, not only should you be afraid, you should be super afraid.

00:08:48.000 You should spend your life cowering in fear.

00:08:50.000 In fact, you should be living in your basement right now, peeing into jars like Howard Hughes.

00:08:55.000 So here's the media's reaction to Trump simply saying, don't be afraid of the virus.

00:09:00.000 Almost 210,000 Americans are dead.

00:09:04.000 Speaking of outrageous, this outrageous tweet.

00:09:07.000 Oh my goodness, Nicole, when I saw that Trump, I mean, I literally was overwhelmed.

00:09:13.000 And now we see this tweet, which is heartless, it is Cruel.

00:09:21.000 Jake, this is so disrespectful.

00:09:23.000 I'm not even sure I can speak about this.

00:09:25.000 It's incredibly disrespectful.

00:09:27.000 What does that mean, don't be afraid of it?

00:09:29.000 I mean, first of all, it's a contagious disease that kills people.

00:09:32.000 There's nowhere to even begin.

00:09:34.000 It's gross.

00:09:35.000 Okay, that is such a wild overreaction.

00:09:37.000 That is a wild and insane overreaction to don't be afraid of COVID, don't let it dominate your life.

00:09:42.000 What he is not saying there is run willy-nilly out into the streets and start licking telephone poles. 0.94

00:09:47.000 Go kiss somebody with COVID.

00:09:48.000 That's not what he is saying.

00:09:50.000 That's what half the Democratic Party was saying in late February.

00:09:53.000 But, you know, none of that matters at this point.

00:09:56.000 Nonetheless, the media wish to promote a sense of panic about the virus, and that is irresponsible.

00:10:01.000 But that is the theme.

00:10:03.000 The theme is that Trump's messaging on this virus has not been good.

00:10:06.000 It continued to not be particularly good yesterday.

00:10:08.000 And the media's overreaction to the virus is not only not good, it promotes really bad public policy.

00:10:15.000 So, it's just a mess all the way around.

00:10:17.000 Nobody is responsible in their rhetoric, and it's really, really irritating.

00:10:20.000 We'll get to more of this in just one second.

00:10:22.000 First, I gotta tell you about this new service that I've been trying.

00:12:14.000 Okay, so that wasn't the only media insanity of the day.

00:12:18.000 Trump's doctors announced that he would be heading back to the White House and the media lost their mind yesterday.

00:12:22.000 Now, be it noted that normally when you quarantine, you quarantine at home.

00:12:25.000 Okay, so Trump going back to the White House and not being stuck at the hospital, it is not the end of the world.

00:12:30.000 He doesn't have to stay at the hospital taking up hospital resources unless he requires hospital resources.

00:12:35.000 Shipping him back home, Is pretty much what you would be instructed to do.

00:12:40.000 If you went in and you tested positive for COVID at the hospital right now and you were not experiencing life-threatening symptoms, they would send you home and then you would isolate in your home, right?

00:12:49.000 That is what you are supposed to be doing.

00:12:51.000 So here are Trump's doctors announcing that yesterday and the media losing their minds over the prospect.

00:12:55.000 I mean, I don't know what they want here.

00:12:57.000 They just want Trump to be in the hospital forever, I suppose.

00:12:59.000 They would like Trump to stay in the hospital until the end of this election cycle as opposed to going back to the White House.

00:13:04.000 They're insulted by the fact that Trump is even going back to the White House.

00:13:07.000 Here are the doctors announcing that Trump was headed back to the White House yesterday.

00:13:12.000 So long as everything continues on the track that we're experiencing right now, this time, as the president already tweeted out.

00:13:19.000 Is to get him home later today.

00:13:21.000 And if he's still on that medication, how is it safe for him to return to the White House?

00:13:25.000 We send patients home with medications all the time.

00:13:28.000 How is it safe for him to drive around in a cloth mask yesterday?

00:13:32.000 And how is it safe for him now to return to the White House where there have been so many cases?

00:13:36.000 How's any of this safe?

00:13:38.000 Okay, so the media were very, very upset that it's deeply unsafe.

00:13:42.000 Okay, first of all, I promise you, the Secret Service, they're wearing PPE, they're wearing N95s, they're wearing goggles, apparently, in order to transport the president.

00:13:50.000 This was true when he went on his little car ride, his slightly ill-advised car ride, over the weekend.

00:13:56.000 The doctor said also that he may not be out of the woods yet because you never know what trajectory the disease is going to take.

00:14:00.000 And this was taken as evidence by the media that it was medically irresponsible to send him back to the White House for him to shelter in place.

00:14:07.000 Again, that is true of everybody who's not currently experiencing life-threatening symptoms.

00:14:10.000 If you don't need any sort of...

00:14:13.000 It's been more than 72 hours since his last fever.

00:14:14.000 The White House also happens to have some medical facilities in the White House.

00:14:17.000 So unless you need really sophisticated medical equipment, it is Trump is like the safest person in the world sheltering in the house in which he lives.

00:14:24.000 Here's the doctor announcing yesterday that he may not be entirely out of the woods, but we're at least comfortable sending him home.

00:14:30.000 It's been more than 72 hours since his last fever.

00:14:34.000 Oxygen levels, including ambulatory saturations and his work of breathing, are all normal.

00:14:42.000 Though he may not entirely be out of the woods yet, the team and I agree that all our evaluations, and most importantly, his clinical status, support the president's safe return home, where he'll be surrounded by world-class medical care 24-7.

00:14:56.000 Okay, so that is correct.

00:14:57.000 That did not stop the media from losing their minds.

00:14:59.000 Because again, no matter what Trump does, it is wrong for the media.

00:15:02.000 If he goes to the hospital, that's wrong.

00:15:04.000 If he comes home from the hospital, that is wrong.

00:15:06.000 If he shelters in place, well then where is he?

00:15:08.000 Is he safe?

00:15:09.000 And then, if he doesn't shelter in place, then he's endangering everybody.

00:15:12.000 That doesn't mean that Trump has been responsible throughout this.

00:15:14.000 As we'll see, I don't think he has been.

00:15:17.000 I mean, I've been pretty clear about that.

00:15:18.000 But the media have been Two things can be true at once. 0.97

00:15:22.000 Trump can be acting irresponsibly in many cases, and the media can absolutely suck at their jobs.

00:15:26.000 So here's Brian Stelter going absolutely wild yesterday over Trump even leaving the hospital.

00:15:31.000 Again, it is perfectly appropriate for him to leave the hospital when he is not in life-threatening condition, so long as the people around him are protected when he is in their presence.

00:15:40.000 And then he goes back home and he shelters.

00:15:41.000 Melania, right now, has COVID.

00:15:42.000 She's in the White House.

00:15:44.000 And she's sheltering in place in the White House.

00:15:45.000 Here's Brian Stelter on CNN being a reliable source.

00:15:49.000 It's not a real show of strength, but it's a performative show of strength.

00:15:53.000 This is what strongmen do in autocratic regimes.

00:15:56.000 Of course, thankfully, we are in a democracy.

00:15:59.000 But this is the kind of thing you see from strongmen who want to appear to be leading.

00:16:04.000 It's a dear leader sort of approach.

00:16:06.000 And I think that is what we are seeing on our television screens.

00:16:09.000 Meanwhile, there are big questions about the cover-up.

00:16:11.000 You know, why won't they tell us about his testing history, when he was tested?

00:16:15.000 We've moved from this possibly being a cover-up to actually being a cover-up.

00:16:19.000 It's a strongman routine.

00:16:20.000 You see him going back home.

00:16:22.000 That is the strongman routine.

00:16:24.000 Now, as we'll see, there is this habit that Trump has, which is the media make a criticism of him, and the criticism is utterly illegitimate.

00:16:30.000 And then within about 35 seconds, Trump does something, you go, well, maybe it's not totally illegitimate.

00:16:35.000 It's really irritating, right?

00:16:37.000 The media will say, Trump is not taking masking seriously.

00:16:40.000 And then Trump will actually take masking seriously.

00:16:41.000 You'll be like, oh, that's unfair. 1.00

00:16:43.000 And then five seconds later, Trump will be like, oh, a mask, they're stupid. 1.00

00:16:46.000 God, why are you doing that? 1.00

00:16:47.000 Why?

00:16:49.000 Like Trump, he specializes in throwing gasoline on fires.

00:16:52.000 He's just the gasoline on fire guy.

00:16:53.000 Okay, so again, the media went nuts yesterday.

00:16:56.000 CNN's Sanjay Gupta, he said he should stay in the hospital.

00:16:58.000 Apparently forever.

00:16:59.000 Sanjay Gupta is now his personal physician, knowing all of the intricacies of his medical condition.

00:17:05.000 These are all the things that sort of make it pretty obvious he should stay in the hospital, and not the least of which, you know, this is a sort of illness that we know people can sort of be doing okay for a period of time.

00:17:16.000 I don't think this is a medical decision.

00:17:17.000 We'll see what the doctors say, as Caitlin pointed out, but I think this is his decision, and this is, you know, basically him saying, I'm going to do this.

00:17:25.000 So I don't think the doctors, if you're just looking at the data, You're paying attention to his risk factors.

00:17:31.000 You're paying attention to how sick he has been.

00:17:33.000 You would advocate for this at all.

00:17:37.000 Again, he has doctors who are treating him.

00:17:39.000 He doesn't need Sanjay Gupta who misdiagnosed Chris Cuomo on air using a fuzzy cell phone video of a lung scan in order to tell Trump whether he can or cannot go to the hospital.

00:17:49.000 All of this is illegitimate at this point, right?

00:17:51.000 At this point in the narrative yesterday, this is all illegitimate.

00:17:54.000 Trump is allowed to go back to the White House as long as people around him are shielded.

00:17:57.000 He is allowed to go back and he is allowed to shelter in the White House until he is done with his 10-day course, right?

00:18:02.000 That is the way that this is supposed to work.

00:18:05.000 And then Trump actually went back to the White House.

00:18:07.000 And again, the media doubled down on how terrible it was that he had headed back to the White House.

00:18:12.000 So it was like, okay, Trump is not wrong.

00:18:14.000 The media is wrong.

00:18:15.000 Trump is not wrong.

00:18:16.000 The media is not wrong.

00:18:16.000 Then Trump is like, well, it's not so right what Trump is doing.

00:18:19.000 We'll get to that in just one second. 1.00

00:18:21.000 Everything is so stupid. 1.00

00:18:22.000 We'll get to more of this in a second. 0.99

00:19:44.000 Okay, so Trump finally returns to the White House.

00:19:45.000 There's all this lead up.

00:19:47.000 He gets on the helicopter.

00:19:48.000 The media are complaining.

00:19:49.000 How dare he leave the hospital?

00:19:51.000 How dare he?

00:19:53.000 And he has medical doctors who say he can leave the hospital.

00:19:55.000 But you know who knows better?

00:19:57.000 Brian Stelter and the anchors at CNN.

00:19:58.000 And finally, Trump returns to the White House.

00:20:01.000 And CNN promptly goes nuts over him removing his mask.

00:20:05.000 So there were two videos originally that came out from CNN.

00:20:09.000 First video was the one that people started to go nuts over.

00:20:11.000 And again, this seemed to be unfair.

00:20:13.000 Trump gets off the helicopter, he proceeds to walk up to the balcony of the White House, and then he takes off his mask for the photo op.

00:20:21.000 And the media lose their minds over this.

00:20:23.000 So here was Trump yesterday doing this.

00:20:25.000 Again, in this particular video, he happens to be dozens of feet away from any other living human being and he is outside.

00:20:31.000 Even if you have COVID, you do not need to wear a mask under those conditions.

00:20:34.000 Okay, where you wear a mask is where you're afraid of transmitting it to somebody else.

00:20:37.000 If I were alone on a beach in the middle of the wilderness and I had COVID, I mean, hell, if I had bubonic plague and I were alone on the beach in the middle of the wilderness, I would not need to wear a mask. 1.00

00:20:45.000 That's stupid. 0.99

00:20:47.000 That was the first video people were going nuts over. 1.00

00:20:48.000 Here was Trump yesterday doing this.

00:20:51.000 This is obviously sending a very different and incorrect message.

00:20:57.000 And you see him here, he takes it off and he's getting ready for his pictures.

00:21:01.000 The flags flank him.

00:21:03.000 Right, Caitlin, this is what he did.

00:21:05.000 This is the moment.

00:21:06.000 This is what he produced it for.

00:21:07.000 He wants the image to be.

00:21:09.000 What the president is portraying by taking his mask off when he gets back to the Truman balcony to give this grand return to the White House is that everything is fine, and as he said, don't let coronavirus control your life.

00:21:23.000 But that is very much still a president who has coronavirus.

00:21:26.000 Okay, fine. 0.66

00:21:27.000 So Chris Cuomo, of course, went completely nuts on this.

00:21:30.000 He started ranting and raving about how this is BS and how the virus is reality.

00:21:34.000 None of this is reality.

00:21:35.000 The virus is reality.

00:21:37.000 How dare Trump do a photo op?

00:21:39.000 How dare he do a photo op over COVID?

00:21:42.000 And Chris Cuomo, I just have a question.

00:21:45.000 Here's Chris Cuomo, first of all. 0.99

00:21:48.000 Tonight he had his video crew capture that stupid scene again so he could put out propaganda, fronting a lie to his people. 0.99

00:21:56.000 Once again, just like, don't worry about the mask. 1.00

00:21:58.000 Now he says, don't worry about COVID.

00:22:00.000 Don't let it control your life.

00:22:04.000 Just propaganda.

00:22:06.000 That's all it is.

00:22:08.000 I just have a question for Chris Cuomo.

00:22:09.000 If you're going to say that it's BS to do a photo op after emerging from COVID, I'm just gonna note that you famously emerged from your basement like a groundhog in order to proclaim that you are now COVID-free after infecting your entire family and, of course, traveling outside your home.

00:22:24.000 There are plenty of media members who have the credibility, I guess, to say something about this.

00:22:28.000 Chris Cuomo is not one of them.

00:22:30.000 The media went nuts over those particular images.

00:22:33.000 Those particular images drove them absolutely batty.

00:22:36.000 So for example, CNN's Erin Burnett, she suggested this was like North Korea.

00:22:40.000 No, North Korea is where you take a brother-in-law and you strap him to an anti-aircraft gun and then you blow him away. 0.79

00:22:44.000 North Korea is where you take your distant relatives who may or may not be a threat to your rule, and then you poison them in an airport. 0.96

00:22:51.000 I'm sorry, the president going up onto a balcony and taking a picture, that is not like North Korea. 0.53

00:22:58.000 If we're just talking about, you know, staged photo ops, Barack Obama did a fair number of them.

00:23:02.000 That is not like North Korea either.

00:23:03.000 It can be self-aggrandizing.

00:23:04.000 It can be egotistical. 1.00

00:23:05.000 It can be stupid. 1.00

00:23:06.000 It can be arrogant. 1.00

00:23:08.000 It is not like North Korea. 0.56

00:23:08.000 Here's Erin Burnett comparing things that are not like North Korea to things that are like North Korea. 0.56

00:23:14.000 What we're seeing here really looks like it's like something out of North Korea. 0.72

00:23:20.000 The dear leader comes out right with the magnificent helicopter entrance and up the stairs and off goes the mask as he pauses, you know, and preens for the shots.

00:23:35.000 Yeah, I was half expecting him to hold up a Bible at the end of that shot.

00:23:40.000 Oh my god, this is your objective media.

00:23:42.000 Journalism is getting everywhere, guys, and it's hot and sticky.

00:23:46.000 It's just everywhere.

00:23:47.000 Really, really gross. 0.51

00:23:48.000 Really gross journalism.

00:23:49.000 Joy Reid, who's a wonderful journalist in her own right, she said she was absolutely disgusted by this display.

00:23:54.000 I'm just gonna note that this entire media was totally fine with people burning cities five seconds ago.

00:23:58.000 Like, burning them down.

00:24:00.000 People murdering people in the streets. 0.92

00:24:02.000 That was totally cool because that was all for racial justice.

00:24:04.000 But Trump got off a helicopter and stood on a balcony and took off a mask when he was dozens of feet from other people.

00:24:10.000 Here is Joy Reid being very, very disgusted with all of this.

00:24:14.000 I am speechless.

00:24:15.000 I am stunned.

00:24:16.000 I have to be honest with you, I'm disgusted by what I just saw.

00:24:20.000 This man is contagious.

00:24:22.000 He just exposed his Secret Service agents, who, as Nicole Wallace pointed out, are some of the finest, most professional people anyone who's ever experienced the Secret Service knows they are true professionals.

00:24:32.000 In every moment of their job, would take a bullet for this president, not take one from the president.

00:24:38.000 Okay, so, you know, it was terrible.

00:24:40.000 How could he go back?

00:24:41.000 Jim Acosta was saying as well, he said this could be patient zero returning to the White House.

00:24:46.000 Because of course, Trump is suspected of perhaps infecting people who are around him.

00:24:49.000 So this is patient zero returning.

00:24:51.000 That's where he lives, guys.

00:24:52.000 I mean, he's the President of the United States.

00:24:53.000 I know you can't deal with that fact, but that is where he lives.

00:24:57.000 So here is Jim Acosta being Jim Acosta.

00:25:00.000 Keep in mind, this is not just the president returning to the White House.

00:25:03.000 This may be patient zero.

00:25:05.000 This is the virus coming back to the White House.

00:25:08.000 And I will tell you, Wolf, having been here all day, it is eerily quiet and empty inside the corridors of the West Wing, with Kayleigh McEnany, the White House press secretary, testing positive for the virus, two press assistants testing positive for the virus.

00:25:23.000 They evacuated much of the West Wing.

00:25:25.000 Okay.

00:25:25.000 God, Jim Acosta.

00:25:26.000 He's just the worst.

00:25:26.000 I'm sorry.

00:25:27.000 Of course Kayleigh McEnany went home. 0.90

00:25:28.000 She tested positive.

00:25:28.000 all of those staffers have gone home.

00:25:30.000 So forget about the emperor has no clothes.

00:25:33.000 The emperor has no staff tonight.

00:25:35.000 Okay.

00:25:36.000 God, Jim Acosta, he's just the worst.

00:25:38.000 I'm sorry.

00:25:39.000 Of course Kayleigh McEnany went home. 0.90

00:25:39.000 She tested positive. 0.90

00:25:40.000 What do you think?

00:25:41.000 She's just gonna hang around in the hallways? 1.00

00:25:42.000 I know White House employees who are on the job and staying away from Trump because Trump is still contagious.

00:25:47.000 Okay, so all this seems really unfair.

00:25:49.000 You're like, why is the media doing this routine?

00:25:51.000 He's just literally going back to the White House.

00:25:53.000 And then the initial photos were of him getting off the helicopter and then walking up the stairs and then taking off the mask when no one else was around.

00:25:59.000 Okay, that was the initial tape.

00:26:02.000 And then Trump does what Trump does, which is he proceeds to go too far.

00:26:07.000 And then it just all...

00:26:11.000 We'll get to that in just one second.

00:26:12.000 First, let us talk about the fact that as we grow closer to this contentious election end, we are now only three weeks away from the end of this election cycle, you need a great pair of premium wireless earbuds.

00:26:23.000 You're into the news.

00:26:24.000 You are consuming it with daily fervid fervor.

00:26:29.000 This is why you need a great pair of wireless earbuds, but not the super expensive ones that are like one size fits all.

00:26:33.000 They don't fit your ear all that great.

00:26:34.000 You instead need wireless earbuds from Raycon.

00:26:37.000 Raycon's newest model, the Everyday E25 earbuds, those are the best ones yet.

00:26:40.000 Six hours of playtime seamless Bluetooth, pairing more bass, a more compact design, a noise-isolating fit.

00:27:17.000 Okay, so the media, they're overreacting to all of this.

00:27:21.000 Trump said, don't be afraid.

00:27:23.000 And they took it as he's saying you should willy nilly just go out there and obtain COVID yourself.

00:27:27.000 Trump decides to go back to the White House.

00:27:29.000 That is the end of the world.

00:27:30.000 When he left the White House in the first place, that was the end.

00:27:32.000 Everything is the end of the world.

00:27:33.000 Then Trump proceeds to do something that apparently is incredibly unwise.

00:27:37.000 He goes up onto the balcony and he takes off the mask.

00:27:40.000 And then what the video shows is that he is in close Consultation with other people apparently not wearing the mask.

00:27:47.000 And he does this in full public view.

00:27:49.000 So it becomes pretty clear later that what he was doing was he was shooting a video in which he is backshadowed by the Washington Monument.

00:27:57.000 We'll see that video in just one second.

00:27:58.000 But you can see in this video that he is in very close consultation with other people.

00:28:03.000 Again, he is contagious.

00:28:04.000 He does have COVID.

00:28:05.000 He's around a bunch of other people, including apparently cameramen.

00:28:08.000 That's not responsible.

00:28:10.000 That is not responsible.

00:28:11.000 Okay, if you know that you have COVID, it is morally wrong to be inside a particular radius with other people without wearing a mask so that you are less likely to transmit COVID to them.

00:28:21.000 By the way, it is no less wrong to go and do that with the flu.

00:28:24.000 If you have a transmissible disease, and you get within a certain distance of people, and you can transmit it to them, you need to be, at the very least, wearing a mask.

00:28:32.000 You should be protecting them.

00:28:34.000 So Trump does that.

00:28:36.000 And now, you've entered the territory where the media's criticisms start to look a little bit less crazy.

00:28:41.000 It looked like they were going absolutely nuts over nothing yesterday.

00:28:44.000 And then, Trump does that, and you see the video of it, and you're like, okay, well, Why would you do that?

00:28:48.000 Why?

00:28:49.000 And I understand from a lot of Trump fans, like, well, he's trolling them.

00:28:51.000 He's trolling them.

00:28:52.000 Well, guess what?

00:28:53.000 The trolling is not particularly useful all the time.

00:28:55.000 It turns out that when you keep trolling and you keep trolling and you keep trolling, sometimes people get annoyed.

00:28:59.000 And I'm not talking about members of the media.

00:29:01.000 I'm talking about, like, the general American public.

00:29:03.000 I think that right now what you're watching in the poll is in the polls right now.

00:29:07.000 And it's still early.

00:29:08.000 Maybe there's time to make it up.

00:29:10.000 But right now you're watching an enormous break for Joe Biden in the polls.

00:29:13.000 There's a poll out today.

00:29:14.000 Biden plus 16.

00:29:16.000 There's a poll out yesterday.

00:29:17.000 Biden plus 14.

00:29:18.000 I know there are people who are now in the business of un-skewing the polls.

00:29:20.000 I'm not in the business of un-skewing the polls.

00:29:22.000 I'll tell you why.

00:29:22.000 In 2012, many of us on the right Spent days and days going through the interior poll statistics to try and quote-unquote unskew the polls.

00:29:29.000 What we came up with was that Romney was going to win.

00:29:32.000 It was a much closer election than this one.

00:29:33.000 Right now, the polls are not close.

00:29:35.000 In the RealClearPolitics National Polling Average, Donald Trump is down nearly 10 points.

00:29:39.000 In various states, it is significantly closer, but in Arizona, the latest poll has him down 8.

00:29:44.000 In Florida, the latest polls have him down somewhere between 3 and 5.

00:29:47.000 He's now trailing by a slight margin in places like North Carolina.

00:29:51.000 Those are not the kind of numbers he needs in order to win re-election.

00:29:54.000 So put aside the immorality of standing close to people when you know you have COVID, wearing no mask, Put that aside.

00:30:01.000 Is it smart politics to do any of this?

00:30:04.000 It is not, in fact, smart politics to do any of this.

00:30:07.000 And in fact, you know, I gotta say, you know, as somebody who, maybe I take COVID a little more seriously than other people my age, maybe I take COVID a little bit more seriously than other people with my job, but the reality is, That I take COVID a little bit more seriously because I think that it's actually fairly serious.

00:30:22.000 I don't think that it's, again, bubonic plague.

00:30:24.000 I don't think that the vast majority of people are going to die from it.

00:30:26.000 I'm the only person in the media, I believe, who's been spending a lot of time on a day-by-day basis talking to actual doctors, literally on a day-by-day basis on my show, trying to cite you actual statistical data from various countries and from around the world.

00:30:39.000 I've tried to be as accurate as possible in conveying that information. 0.98

00:30:42.000 Trump's rhetoric on this stuff has not been good, and it is coming back to bite him directly in the butt. 0.92

00:30:48.000 Okay, so Trump cuts this video yesterday. 0.86

00:30:50.000 And frankly, he looks pretty good in the video, right?

00:30:54.000 He says he's standing outside the... Actually, there were three videos that came forth from the Trump campaign.

00:31:01.000 Video number one, he talked about perhaps he was immune.

00:31:04.000 Okay, so he's talking about how he's had COVID.

00:31:07.000 He reiterates you shouldn't be afraid of it.

00:31:09.000 Again, I think that the answer is you shouldn't live your life in complete fear.

00:31:12.000 Again, I generally agree with this message, right?

00:31:16.000 That you shouldn't live in fear of it.

00:31:18.000 And he does look pretty good, right?

00:31:19.000 I mean, he's standing flanked by two American flags.

00:31:22.000 You can see behind him the Washington Monument.

00:31:23.000 This apparently is the little video that he was taking when he was in fairly close contact with other people.

00:31:28.000 Here was Trump talking about his experiences with COVID.

00:31:33.000 Don't let it dominate.

00:31:34.000 Don't let it take over your lives.

00:31:36.000 Don't let that happen.

00:31:37.000 We have the greatest country in the world.

00:31:39.000 We're going back.

00:31:40.000 We're going back to work.

00:31:41.000 We're going to be out front.

00:31:43.000 As your leader, I had to do that.

00:31:44.000 I knew there's danger to it, but I had to do it.

00:31:47.000 I stood out front.

00:31:49.000 I led.

00:31:50.000 Nobody that's a leader would not do what I did.

00:31:54.000 And I know there's a risk, there's a danger, but that's okay.

00:31:58.000 And now I'm better, and maybe I'm immune.

00:32:00.000 I don't know.

00:32:01.000 Okay, so number one, he is not yet immune.

00:32:04.000 He is still in the throes of the virus.

00:32:06.000 One of the things that's happened, I know people who have literally died of the virus, who started off, it looked okay, it looked a little worse, it looked a little better, and then it got a lot worse.

00:32:14.000 So we're not quite out of the woods yet.

00:32:16.000 I mean, his own doctors say we're not out of the woods.

00:32:18.000 Trump's original message there, which is, You know, don't live in complete abject fear of the virus is the correct message.

00:32:24.000 We don't need to lock down again.

00:32:27.000 This is where the president's rhetoric connects to public policy.

00:32:29.000 We don't need to lock down again.

00:32:31.000 We shouldn't live in abject fear of the virus, right?

00:32:33.000 Again, that original tweet, don't be afraid, was not the end of the world.

00:32:36.000 In fact, I think that the tweet was actually not bad.

00:32:39.000 It is the last part of what he says where you start to go, come on, right?

00:32:42.000 When Trump says things like, as your leader, I had to go, I had to, I had to lead.

00:32:47.000 What?

00:32:47.000 Are you not suggesting that as the leader of the free world, as the president of the United States, you had to get COVID?

00:32:52.000 Is that the suggestion here?

00:32:53.000 Is that in order to show people that COVID is livable, that you had to get COVID, that you knew you were going to survive?

00:32:58.000 So I have general moral objections to treating, quote-unquote, defeating a disease as some sort of act of willpower.

00:33:03.000 I don't think that's actually how disease works.

00:33:05.000 I hate it when people discuss cancer in these terms.

00:33:07.000 You'll see people, and they get cancer, and then, if they, God forbid, die of cancer, you'll see people say, well, they lost their battle with cancer.

00:33:13.000 They didn't lose their battle with cancer.

00:33:16.000 Okay?

00:33:16.000 It's not like if they'd had a better strategy, they'd win.

00:33:18.000 Or if they'd only had more willpower to push over that final hill, then they would've defeated cancer.

00:33:22.000 Everybody enjoys living to the extent that they've not committed suicide.

00:33:26.000 What that means is that you are not quote-unquote defeated by the disease.

00:33:31.000 The disease may defeat your health system, but it has not defeated you because I do not identify you with your immune system.

00:33:37.000 Nor is it an act of willpower to defeat COVID.

00:33:39.000 It's not as though you are morally superior should you beat COVID and you are morally inferior if you die of COVID.

00:33:44.000 I hate this sort of language.

00:33:45.000 This idea that Trump went out there and he was like, you know, I had to be brave so I wore no mask and I went in front of other people and we hung out together because I'm a leader.

00:33:53.000 Like, it is not non-leadership to be cautious.

00:33:56.000 Megan, I agree that there is a moderate halfway point between willy-nilly doing whatever the hell you want and being Joe Biden and hiding in your basement the rest of your life.

00:34:04.000 And, you know, I get it.

00:34:06.000 Joe Biden's 78 years old.

00:34:07.000 He doesn't want to get COVID because, again, he is in the high-risk category.

00:34:10.000 But there is a halfway point.

00:34:12.000 And the halfway point is the social distancing.

00:34:14.000 It is the mask wearing.

00:34:16.000 And Biden, more and more, has been getting out and actually doing some of that mask wearing.

00:34:19.000 And you're seeing him start to message this.

00:34:22.000 This is why when Trump does the sort of triumphal procession back to the White House, here's what his attitude should have been after he got healthy from COVID.

00:34:30.000 Thank God for my doctors.

00:34:31.000 My doctors were excellent.

00:34:32.000 Thank God for the medication that we have developed, the therapeutics we have developed.

00:34:35.000 It shows that many of the policies we have been pursuing are the correct and right policies.

00:34:40.000 Now that I have COVID, I can tell you it's a serious thing.

00:34:42.000 I mean, he was on oxygen twice, right?

00:34:43.000 I can tell you that it was very unpleasant.

00:34:47.000 It was serious.

00:34:48.000 We have a great medical system in this country.

00:34:51.000 It is important to socially distance and mask up if we don't want to see that medical system overwhelmed.

00:34:55.000 If you are in a vulnerable population, you should do all of those things.

00:34:59.000 And we can get back to work.

00:35:01.000 Instead, because Trump is Trump, he decided to treat his emergence from COVID as some sort of great moral victory for himself.

00:35:08.000 So he put out this video yesterday.

00:35:10.000 And I mean, frankly, like the video itself, if you saw this context-free, you'd have literally no idea what the video is celebrating.

00:35:17.000 So the video shows Marine One landing on the lawn over at the White House.

00:35:22.000 And I know, listen, I know this is an unpopular view on my side of the political aisle.

00:35:25.000 I get it, but tough.

00:35:27.000 Okay, so here's Marine One landing on the lawn.

00:35:30.000 So Marine One comes and it lands on the lawn of the White House to the triumphal music, right?

00:35:33.000 To the triumphal movie music.

00:35:35.000 And then you're gonna see the president of the United States get out of Marine One and he gets that glory shot where he stands up on the balcony and he salutes.

00:35:43.000 Again, none of this is like morally wrong in the way that the media are suggesting, oh, it's terrible and awful and no good and very bad.

00:35:49.000 But it is strategically obtuse.

00:35:52.000 Here's a bit of the video.

00:35:53.000 Here's Marine One landing on the lawn at the White House in slow motion.

00:36:05.000 you The wheels come down.

00:36:09.000 The door opens.

00:36:12.000 His Secret Service agents come off wearing masks.

00:36:13.000 He comes off wearing a mask.

00:36:15.000 And there he is walking on the lawn like a hero.

00:36:19.000 Okay, and then he goes up to the balcony, and off comes the mask, and he salutes Marine One as Marine One flies away.

00:36:29.000 Okay, so I'm just gonna note right here.

00:36:33.000 First of all, I want this sort of treatment every time I successfully complete a grocery list that my wife has assigned to me at the grocery store.

00:36:38.000 I have yet to successfully complete one of these grocery lists.

00:36:40.000 I always forget one thing.

00:36:42.000 In fact, before I go to the grocery store, I ask my wife, which thing would you prefer I forget? 1.00

00:36:45.000 Because I will forget at least one thing.

00:36:47.000 So you need to tell me which one you want me to forget.

00:36:50.000 You don't get, I'm sorry, you do not get a triumphant return video with, like, dramatic movie music for not dying.

00:36:58.000 This is how low our bar is in American politics.

00:37:00.000 Trump doesn't die, so he gets a triumphant video.

00:37:04.000 And all Joe Biden has to do to be president, apparently, at this point, is not be a dead human.

00:37:07.000 Like, actually not be dead.

00:37:09.000 So both of our candidates right now, their campaign is, I'm not dead.

00:37:13.000 Which I gotta tell you, like, not the most inspiring campaign slogan. 1.00

00:37:17.000 I survived COVID and all I got was this stupid White House. 0.99

00:37:19.000 It's not like the most inspiring, it's not the most, or I hung out in the basement and what I got is this stupid, so now we've got, Captain, I hide in basements, and Captain, I survived COVID. 0.99

00:37:29.000 And like, I'm sorry, what does any of this have to do with bettering the lives of the American people? 0.89

00:37:34.000 Why exactly am I supposed to be, like, I'm super happy that Trump recovered.

00:37:38.000 Okay, and anybody of good heart should be very happy when the President of the United States recovers from a deadly disease, and God willing, he should be healthy going forward.

00:37:46.000 Obviously.

00:37:48.000 I don't understand, like, just in general treatment of disease, I don't understand why we as a society treat it as some sort of act of will to defeat a disease to the point where you deserve a sort of, like, Self-glorifying video about how you fought the disease and you defeat and it wasn't just that right the Trump campaign Released a video and I understand it's supposed to be funny.

00:38:08.000 I get it.

00:38:09.000 Okay, and it is I mean, it's like on a raw level It's funny.

00:38:11.000 I guess they released a triumphant video of Trump Literally tackling, like beating the hell out of, it's Trump as football player running roughshod over another football player with COVID as the head. 1.00

00:38:26.000 It's just me, Marie, on Twitter and it's unbelievably stupid. 0.98

00:38:30.000 But like, imagine that you are somebody who's had a family member or you know somebody who's actually suffered with COVID and didn't emerge. 0.99

00:38:37.000 Is it because they weren't as tough as Trump?

00:38:39.000 Is that the theme here?

00:38:40.000 Here is Trump as a 49ers football player.

00:38:43.000 It's Trump's head, and he's running down the sideline, and COVID tries to tackle him and he just brushes COVID off because he's just that tough.

00:38:53.000 Oh, he just leaps right over COVID.

00:38:54.000 Look at that.

00:38:55.000 And scores a touchdown.

00:38:56.000 There's President Trump.

00:38:57.000 And then doing a funny dance. 0.87

00:38:59.000 And then the inevitable cut of the crazy lady from 2016 screaming into the air. 1.00

00:39:05.000 And then Trump hence make America great again.

00:39:07.000 That came from the Trump campaign.

00:39:10.000 That came from the Trump campaign.

00:39:12.000 So let me just say a couple of things.

00:39:13.000 One, on a raw level again, hilarious.

00:39:17.000 Who is the crowd for this?

00:39:19.000 Like, I understand.

00:39:20.000 It's funny to me, too.

00:39:21.000 I get it.

00:39:21.000 It's funny.

00:39:22.000 But is the trollery worth it?

00:39:23.000 Because right now, that dude needs to make up 16 points in the polls.

00:39:28.000 Like, at this point, he's got a little bit of ground to make up, particularly among everyone.

00:39:33.000 Not particularly among, like, one group, but particularly among all the humans.

00:39:38.000 Like right now, by issue.

00:39:41.000 I understand I'm telling you things you don't want to hear.

00:39:44.000 But guess what?

00:39:46.000 Guess what?

00:39:46.000 If you want Trump to win, he's going to need to turn a corner.

00:39:48.000 We are running out of time here.

00:39:50.000 It is October 6th.

00:39:51.000 The election happens in less than one month.

00:39:53.000 We are 28 days to the election.

00:39:55.000 And in two national polls, he is losing by 14 to 16 points.

00:40:00.000 Those are not the numbers.

00:40:02.000 You show me a polling outfit that gets an election that wrong.

00:40:04.000 I don't mean 3 to 5 points wrong like they did in the States.

00:40:06.000 I mean nationally.

00:40:07.000 14 to 16 points wrong?

00:40:08.000 20 points wrong?

00:40:11.000 And I will show you a place that literally cannot be in business next time around.

00:40:15.000 We'll get to more of this in just one second.

00:42:51.000 you're listening to the largest, fastest growing conservative podcast and radio show in the nation.

00:42:55.000 So Joe Biden has been able to completely escape.

00:43:04.000 Because of Trump's behavior, because Trump is the center of attention, because everything that he does has to be big and glorious and macho because it's Hector Camacho.

00:43:12.000 Macho Camacho.

00:43:13.000 Because he basically went out to the balcony and decided to fire machine guns in the air over defeating COVID.

00:43:18.000 He's been able to completely monopolize the attention.

00:43:21.000 Now, I understand that normally in a presidential race, if you monopolize attention, then you win.

00:43:25.000 But that's because you're usually spending that time attacking your opponent and characterizing your opponent.

00:43:29.000 Well, Joe Biden has completely avoided any and all scrutiny.

00:43:32.000 In fact, he's made his entire campaign, at least I'm not that guy.

00:43:35.000 And he's especially doing that with regard to masks.

00:43:37.000 He put out literally a three second video on his Twitter feed, and it was just a graphic of Trump taking off his mask and Joe Biden keeping his mask on.

00:43:44.000 And that was the entire thing.

00:43:46.000 Now, again, I agree with Trump that very often what you see from Democrats and what you see from Joe Biden is mask signaling.

00:43:51.000 You see people who are in the middle of nowhere wearing masks, right?

00:43:54.000 They're out running.

00:43:55.000 They're out jogging.

00:43:55.000 They're not near anybody.

00:43:56.000 And they're wearing masks in the middle of the heat.

00:43:58.000 And you're like, what are you doing?

00:43:59.000 And then people yelling at you if you don't wear a mask, if you're out in the middle of the heat. 0.88

00:44:02.000 OK, like all of that is incredibly silly.

00:44:04.000 But the generalized message It would only work if people had the perception that Trump was not being responsible.

00:44:10.000 And right now, here is what the polls say.

00:44:12.000 Hey, you don't have to like the data, but the data are the data.

00:44:15.000 And I understand we can completely dismiss all of the data.

00:44:17.000 We can pretend that the data don't exist or that it doesn't matter.

00:44:21.000 We can hope against hope that the data is wrong this time.

00:44:25.000 But I just don't know why you would stake your hopes on this when you could theoretically do things to alleviate the polling gap that exists.

00:44:33.000 Right now, the RealClearPolitics national average has Joe Biden up 9.2 points.

00:44:39.000 9.2!

00:44:40.000 By way of contrast, Hillary Clinton was up 4 at this point in the national polling data. 0.62

00:44:44.000 In the battleground states, Biden is currently leading in Florida by 2.3, in Pennsylvania by 6.6, in Michigan by 5.8, in Wisconsin by 6.0.

00:44:55.000 All three of the battleground states in the Midwest, those are all outside the margin of error.

00:44:59.000 In North Carolina, Biden is now leading by 1.2.

00:45:01.000 In Arizona, he is now leading by 3.4, including a late-breaking poll in which he is leading by 8.

00:45:06.000 These are not the kinds of numbers that Donald Trump requires, obviously.

00:45:11.000 Quite obviously, in fact.

00:45:14.000 And so why exactly would we be sanguine about that?

00:45:16.000 If you want to see Biden defeated, as I do, why would you be sanguine about any of this?

00:45:21.000 Likely voters, according to a new CNN poll, broadly prefer Biden over Trump on a number of issues.

00:45:25.000 59% prefer Biden on COVID, over 38% for Trump.

00:45:27.000 59% for Biden on COVID, over 38% for Trump.

00:45:31.000 On healthcare, 59 to 39.

00:45:33.000 On racial inequality, 62 to 36.

00:45:37.000 On crime and safety, 55 to 43, which is insane.

00:45:40.000 How in the world is Trump losing to Joe Antifa Biden, 55 to 43?

00:45:45.000 I call him Antifa Biden because the guy literally refused to condemn Antifa from the stage.

00:45:49.000 He called it an ideology or a philosophy, not a not a movement or an organization.

00:45:55.000 52% of Americans now say they have a positive view of Biden.

00:45:58.000 That is not because they have a positive view of Biden.

00:45:59.000 That's because they have a negative view of Trump.

00:46:02.000 Opinions on Biden haven't shifted one iota.

00:46:04.000 It's just that people look at candidates in comparison to one another.

00:46:06.000 Only 39% of Americans have a positive view of Trump.

00:46:10.000 Likely voters consider Biden more unifying, 61 to 33.

00:46:14.000 More honest and trustworthy, 58 to 33.

00:46:17.000 They say that he cares more about people like you, 58 to 38.

00:46:19.000 They say he has a clear plan to solve the nation's problems, 55 to 39.

00:46:22.000 These stats are awful.

00:46:25.000 Biden has expanded his edge over Trump among women, 57 to 37. 0.99

00:46:29.000 Among people of color, Biden's advantage is now 59, I'm sorry, 69 to 27.

00:46:31.000 I'm sorry, 69 to 27.

00:46:35.000 So he has picked up 10 points since September.

00:46:37.000 Among white men without college degrees, Trump's support has actually increased from 61% to 67%.

00:46:45.000 But among all other groups, he is down and he is down heavily.

00:46:48.000 In fact, among white voters overall, he is now trailing.

00:46:50.000 He is now down 4% among all white voters.

00:46:55.000 So bottom line here is that if you take seriously any of the stats, then you would think that Trump has some ground to make up.

00:47:02.000 And here's the thing, he could make it up if he allowed Joe Biden to be the center of attention.

00:47:06.000 All Joe Biden has been doing, his entire campaign right now, again, because he's the anti-Trump, all he's doing is just pointing at Trump and saying he's botching COVID, and then as we go into the fall and the numbers start to uptick in certain areas, he has been downplaying any success that we're seeing from the virus.

00:47:20.000 Now, here's the thing.

00:47:21.000 There was such an open lane for Trump here on COVID, such an open lane, and I said it in real time, so this is not 20-20 hindsight.

00:47:27.000 I said it at the time.

00:47:28.000 All Trump had to do was say, no lockdowns, be responsible.

00:47:32.000 No lockdowns, be responsible.

00:47:34.000 That's it.

00:47:35.000 If he just said that over and over, no lockdowns and be responsible, it would have been totally okay.

00:47:41.000 And not only that, if he said no lockdowns and be responsible means no mass gatherings, no huge mass gatherings, then when Democrats decided randomly it was okay for millions of people to go in the streets and shout and spit on each other about George Floyd, all he would have had to do is say, listen, You guys now own this.

00:47:57.000 You proclaim that it's totally fine to do all of this in the name of racial justice. 0.81

00:48:00.000 Okay, well, whatever spike happens, that's now on you.

00:48:03.000 Because it is worthy of note that while people suggested that those rallies did not actually increase COVID rates, the data suggests that the rallies actually increased COVID rates.

00:48:10.000 Shockingly.

00:48:11.000 Shockingly.

00:48:12.000 Who could believe it?

00:48:13.000 Biden, however, is now going to basically stake his entire campaign on the pandemic not being over and also on how much he loves masks.

00:48:20.000 That's now the entire campaign.

00:48:21.000 And I understand that that creates a reactionary need on the right to say that masks are entirely bad.

00:48:25.000 They're not entirely bad.

00:48:26.000 The evidence on masks is mixed.

00:48:28.000 When you're in close contact with other people, you should be wearing a mask.

00:48:32.000 When you're on an airplane, as I recently was, you should be wearing a mask.

00:48:36.000 By the way, Biden is now proposing policies that are already in place. 1.00

00:48:39.000 That's how stupid we are. 0.99

00:48:41.000 We're like, Biden's going to fix all the problems. 1.00

00:48:43.000 Biden isn't fixing a damn thing.

00:48:44.000 The airlines have had policies in place right now that require you to wear a mask if you are above the age of two.

00:48:49.000 I was on a plane yesterday with my children.

00:48:52.000 My children were wearing masks except for the little tiny baby.

00:48:54.000 Anyway, here was Joe Biden saying the pandemic is far from over yesterday.

00:49:00.000 He did this event in Miami.

00:49:04.000 Since the president entered the hospital on Friday, More than 100,000, since Friday, more than 100,000 more people have been diagnosed with COVID.

00:49:15.000 And this week, at least 5,000 more will die.

00:49:21.000 Cases and deaths are climbing in many states.

00:49:24.000 I hope the president's recovery is swift and successful, but our nation's COVID crisis is far, far from over.

00:49:32.000 Okay, so again, this is going to be his campaign.

00:49:35.000 And then he suggests we should impose a mask mandate on interstate travel.

00:49:38.000 Okay, well, first of all, if you're talking about like airlines, they already do.

00:49:43.000 I was just on a plane yesterday.

00:49:44.000 They do.

00:49:45.000 They will throw you off the plane.

00:49:46.000 And by the way, for folks who try to resist the airlines, if you do that, they will put you on the federal watch list.

00:49:50.000 You won't be able to fly anymore.

00:49:51.000 So just know that going in.

00:49:53.000 But here was Joe Biden doing that routine yesterday.

00:49:56.000 I was glad to see the president speaking and recording videos over the weekend.

00:50:03.000 Now that he's busy tweeting campaign messages, I would ask him to do this.

00:50:07.000 Listen to the scientists.

00:50:10.000 Support masks.

00:50:12.000 Support a mask mandate nationwide.

00:50:16.000 Require masks in every federal building and facility and interstate travel.

00:50:22.000 Urge every governor and mayor to do the same.

00:50:24.000 We know it saves lives.

00:50:27.000 Okay, so again, this is what his campaign has been able to boil down to.

00:50:31.000 And part of that is that he's been very on message, and he's been able to hide in the basement.

00:50:36.000 And part of that's Trump's fault.

00:50:37.000 I'm sorry, it is.

00:50:39.000 He could have prosecuted a case against Biden.

00:50:39.000 Because guess what?

00:50:41.000 I've been saying since the riots, he needs to say that Joe Biden has been standing aside and letting it happen.

00:50:48.000 And Joe Biden, in that debate, I know that we're completely ignoring what Biden said during the debate.

00:50:52.000 In that debate, Joe Biden refused to get on Antifa, He refused to say anything whatsoever about serious racial violence in the cities, except for blaming white supremacists, oddly enough, for the violence that has been plaguing the United States.

00:51:05.000 I mean, Joe Biden is a disaster area on this.

00:51:07.000 And when he was asked, why don't you call up some of the heads of major cities and say crackdown on crime?

00:51:11.000 He said, well, I'm just a retiree.

00:51:13.000 I'm just an old retired gentleman.

00:51:15.000 Really, are you?

00:51:16.000 Or are you the head of the Democratic Party, as you said?

00:51:19.000 He's been able to get away with all of this.

00:51:20.000 He's been able to get away with gaffe after gaffe after gaffe because all the focus is on Trump.

00:51:25.000 Hey, over the last 24 hours, Bernie Sanders again underscored the fact that Bernie Sanders says he will be literally the most progressive president ever, ever.

00:51:34.000 Hey, nobody's looking at Joe Biden's agenda because nobody is looking at Joe Biden, period.

00:51:39.000 And that is because of Trump's pathological need to be the center of attention, which has been a mistake since the beginning.

00:51:43.000 I've said it one million times on this show.

00:51:46.000 If you wish to lose this election, make it a referendum on Trump.

00:51:48.000 If you wish to win this election, make it a referendum on Biden.

00:51:51.000 Trump has spent zero time making this election a referendum on Biden.

00:51:54.000 It's been all about Trump from beginning to end.

00:51:55.000 And gotta say, that's on Trump.

00:51:58.000 It really is.

00:51:59.000 Here's Bernie Sanders telling the sad truth about exactly who Joe Biden is.

00:52:06.000 It is no secret, no great secret at all, that Joe Biden and I have differences of opinion.

00:52:13.000 But I also want to tell you that in fairness to Joe, if his campaign proposals were to be implemented, they would significantly improve the lives of tens of millions of working families,

00:52:33.000 And would make Joe Biden the most progressive president of the United States since Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

00:52:44.000 Okay, how is that not the campaign?

00:52:46.000 How is that not the campaign?

00:52:47.000 But it's not the campaign.

00:52:48.000 It's not.

00:52:48.000 Right?

00:52:49.000 Joe Biden is able to get away with anything because, again, there's a bigger, shinier headline right here.

00:52:53.000 Joe Biden yesterday, in the middle of an event, suggested that he's been able to stay in his basement because black women keep the shelves stocked.

00:52:59.000 Imagine if Trump said this for half a second and recognized just how racist it sounds.

00:53:03.000 Here was Joe Biden saying something that certainly, if any Republican had said, it would be considered the end of the world.

00:53:09.000 Because the American public, the blinders have been taken off.

00:53:13.000 They've all of a sudden seen a hell of a lot clearer. 0.55

00:53:17.000 The reason I was able to stay sequestered in my home is because some black woman was able to stack the grocery shelf. 1.00

00:53:27.000 Why are the black women stacking the grocery shelves, Joe? 1.00

00:53:31.000 That old doddering fool is leading Donald Trump by double digits right now. 1.00

00:53:36.000 That guy, who's a horrible vice president, a horrible senator, a man who, in open debate, I mean, he did a town hall yesterday, and he proclaimed that he, as VP, had dealt with Cuba and Russia. 0.99

00:53:47.000 He as VP, as part of an administration, made nice, made lovey-dovey with Raul Castro, and gave Vladimir Putin complete control over Crimea, as well as Syria.

00:53:57.000 That guy is able to get away with it, because everybody's distracted by the shiny object, and the shiny object wants to be the distraction.

00:54:03.000 That is unconscionable politically.

00:54:06.000 Okay, meanwhile, Meanwhile, we are prepping this week for a vice presidential debate.

00:54:12.000 Now, one of the strategies that I had recommended all along, it's very frustrating when you recommend a particular strategy and it is then ignored, and then the electoral gap begins to open wide.

00:54:24.000 I mean, really open wide.

00:54:26.000 I suggested, as soon as Kamala Harris was made the vice presidential candidate by Joe Biden, that she should be the issue. 0.78

00:54:32.000 Now imagine for just a second if Donald Trump had done that.

00:54:35.000 Imagine if he hadn't made the issue Donald Trump.

00:54:37.000 Imagine if not every news cycle were about Donald.

00:54:39.000 Imagine if he just receded to his basement and watched Shark Week and said to Joe Biden in that debate, not just talked over him for an hour and a half or had this sort of grumpy old man, Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon fish fight on the ice.

00:54:53.000 Imagine if instead Donald Trump had said, OK, you know what, Joe?

00:54:57.000 What you say here, your assurances... First of all, your assurances mean nothing, because you won't condemn Antifa, because you refuse to condemn Black Lives Matter violence, because you took sides.

00:55:06.000 You literally took sides with an alleged rapist in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as opposed to siding with the police.

00:55:10.000 You said the police should be arrested, and the alleged rapist required a phone call of sympathy from you.

00:55:15.000 That's the case of Jacob Blake.

00:55:17.000 Instead of doing that, instead of saying, you know, Joe, your opinion, frankly, I don't think it matters that much, because the American people know that you're probably not going to fill out two terms, and maybe not even one term.

00:55:28.000 Instead, we should be focused on Kamala Harris. 0.98

00:55:29.000 You know Kamala Harris has not done a single press conference?

00:55:32.000 She has not done one press conference this entire time.

00:55:35.000 She was nominated vice president by Joe Biden in July.

00:55:38.000 In July.

00:55:40.000 Right?

00:55:41.000 At the very end of July, it was clear what was going to happen.

00:55:43.000 Was it early August?

00:55:43.000 It may have been early August.

00:55:44.000 Late July, early August.

00:55:46.000 She was nominated.

00:55:47.000 It is now October.

00:55:49.000 She has not done a single press conference.

00:55:52.000 She's done a couple of interviews where she's avoided questions studiously, like the plague.

00:55:56.000 Like, she's been as good at avoiding questions as Joe Biden has been at avoiding COVID.

00:56:01.000 And she's been able to avoid all of that.

00:56:04.000 How has she not been the issue?

00:56:05.000 She is one of the most radical senators in the United States Senate.

00:56:08.000 She is his hand-chosen successor.

00:56:10.000 He picked her.

00:56:11.000 He may not like her, but he picked her.

00:56:13.000 He is not in great shape.

00:56:14.000 He is 78 years old.

00:56:16.000 He is doddering.

00:56:17.000 He is stumbling over himself.

00:56:19.000 So, theoretically, if Donald Trump had put the focus on Kamala Harris, the Pence-Harris debate might actually matter a little bit.

00:56:25.000 Because it should matter.

00:56:26.000 Because, by the way, Pence-Harris is significantly more representative of the ideological gap in this country than Trump-Biden.

00:56:33.000 Trump is a non-ideological figure, and people hate him for non-ideological reasons.

00:56:37.000 People don't hate Trump because he's a conservative.

00:56:39.000 I mean, they do, right?

00:56:40.000 If Trump weren't conservative, they wouldn't hate him the same way.

00:56:42.000 But the things about Trump that they hate are not the things about his conservatism.

00:56:46.000 What they hate about Trump is not even his policy.

00:56:48.000 Because he's a conservative, they hate him.

00:56:50.000 But the things that, if you ask anybody on the left why they hate Trump, they will never talk about his policies.

00:56:54.000 They'll talk about him personally.

00:56:57.000 The gap between Mike Pence, who's kind of traditional Republican, and Kamala Harris, who is the mainstream of the Democratic Party, is much, much more indicative of the political differences between right and left in this country than any of the kind of personality battles between slow old Joe and Donald Trump.

00:57:14.000 So this VP debate would matter an awful lot.

00:57:17.000 And right now, here's what's amazing.

00:57:18.000 Despite how unpopular Trump is, and the numbers show he's very unpopular with the American people, right now Mike Pence is running dead even with Kamala Harris in the polls.

00:57:29.000 If they were just talking about popularity, if it were just Harris versus Pence head-to-head, A little less than half of likely voters, 48%, said they would vote for Harris in a head-to-head with Pence.

00:57:41.000 45% said they would opt for Pence.

00:57:43.000 Okay, and that is Pence in the middle of an incredibly unpopular administration by polling data.

00:57:47.000 So imagine if Trump, if Pence were not part of a Trump administration.

00:57:51.000 Imagine if this election, for a second, just, you know, imagine for a second that this election were between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris.

00:57:58.000 I think Pence wins that election, by the way.

00:58:00.000 If this election were between Trump and Harris, and Trump had the... Here's the problem.

00:58:05.000 If Trump had the capacity to get out of his own way, he would even win this election against Biden.

00:58:08.000 But he can't get out of his own way.

00:58:10.000 And so normally, this would be an excellent time for people to focus in on the VP debate.

00:58:15.000 Because there's a high likelihood that Kamala Harris will be the 47th president of the United States if Joe Biden becomes the 46th.

00:58:22.000 High, high probability.

00:58:23.000 And I don't mean when she wins an election.

00:58:25.000 I mean when he...

00:58:27.000 God forbid something happens to him.

00:58:28.000 I mean, again, he's 78 years old.

00:58:30.000 So this would be a time when her campaign would be extremely, extremely relevant.

00:58:38.000 And here's the thing.

00:58:38.000 Pence knows that.

00:58:39.000 And by the way, Pence is going to skunk her in the debate. 0.99

00:58:41.000 Here's my prediction.

00:58:42.000 My prediction is that Wednesday night, Pence is absolutely going to wreck her.

00:58:46.000 She's going to try and separate him off from Trump.

00:58:48.000 She's going to go after Trump.

00:58:49.000 And Pence is going to be a good soldier, and he's going to defend a lot of the kind of indefensible things that Trump does on a personal level.

00:58:55.000 But when it comes to policy, she's got nothing.

00:58:58.000 Also, Kamala Harris happens to be a not very good debater. 0.99

00:59:00.000 I know that the media are building her up to be this excellent, wonderful debater.

00:59:03.000 She is not a good debater. 1.00

00:59:04.000 The reason I know she's not a good debater is because she had one good debate with Joe Biden in which she levied an accusation at Joe Biden.

00:59:11.000 And then she immediately provided zero evidence to back it up and then fell apart on the stage. 1.00

00:59:16.000 And then Tulsi Gabbard took her apart.

00:59:18.000 Tulsi Gabbard.

00:59:19.000 So I think that Mike Pence will do the same thing.

00:59:21.000 Kamala Harris is a lackluster performer. 1.00

00:59:24.000 She's a lackluster performer. 1.00

00:59:25.000 Here was Kamala Harris over the last 24 hours trying to imitate Joe Biden. 1.00

00:59:29.000 She's tried to remake herself from radical Democrat, Medicare for all, racial justice, to, I'm just like Joe, you know, I'm like a moderate, you know, we're fighting for the soul of our nation.

00:59:38.000 Broad, general nonsense that she's never asked a tough question.

00:59:43.000 This campaign, our campaign, as Joe says, is about fighting for the soul of our nation.

00:59:51.000 And when we talk about, when Joe talks about fighting for the soul of our nation, it's about fighting for working people.

00:59:59.000 It's about fighting for families.

01:00:01.000 It's about fighting for children.

01:00:03.000 It's about fighting for health care.

01:00:05.000 It's about fighting for good union jobs.

01:00:09.000 It's about fighting to preserve our climate and clean air and clean water.

01:00:16.000 She's so bad at this. 1.00

01:00:17.000 I mean, she's so bad at this. 0.98

01:00:18.000 And Mike Pence is going to actually push her on these issues.

01:00:21.000 Remember that Mike Pence really wrecked Tim McCain in the last vice presidential debate.

01:00:24.000 And it's fun to watch the media try to build her up as though she's really good at this.

01:00:27.000 She's so bad at this. 1.00

01:00:28.000 She dropped out of the primaries before they even voted in California.

01:00:31.000 So that Pence-Harris debate in a normal election year, especially one where you have a 74-year-old and a 78-year-old running against each other, That would be a very relevant debate.

01:00:40.000 Unfortunately, I wonder whether it'll be relevant at all to the polling data.

01:00:45.000 I wish it were because I think that Pence is absolutely going to damage her in that debate.

01:00:48.000 As well, he should.

01:00:50.000 Okay.

01:00:50.000 Well, we'll be back here later today with two additional hours of content.

01:00:53.000 Otherwise, we will see you here tomorrow in preparation for that vice presidential debate.
