00:00:00.000 Hello and welcome once again to The Blueprint.
00:00:27.780 It is Canada's Conservative Podcast.
00:00:30.620 I'm your host, Jamie Schmael, member of Parliament for Halliburton,
00:00:33.420 with new content for you every single Tuesday at 1.30 p.m. Eastern Time.
00:00:38.900 And with that content, we ask that you like, subscribe, share, comment this program
00:00:43.860 because we need you to help push back against the ever-moving liberal agenda.
00:00:48.380 And by doing that, you might hit someone in your social media network
00:00:51.280 that might be open to hearing the Conservative message,
00:00:53.740 something they might not be getting in traditional media.
00:00:56.920 So we do appreciate you doing that.
00:00:58.640 And you're going to want to do it because the guest on today's show
00:01:01.900 is none other than the Member of Parliament for Durham.
00:01:04.660 You know him, Aaron O'Toole, the Leader of Canada's Conservatives.
00:01:07.480 Thank you so much for joining us here today.
00:01:10.100 Great to be back, Jamie.
00:01:11.480 All right, we're coming fresh off the convention.
00:01:13.580 Let's address the elephant in the room, first of all.
00:01:16.420 What is going on with that motion?
00:01:18.400 Something about the membership?
00:01:20.600 And why don't you just explain it for us?
00:01:24.860 Yes.
00:01:25.420 You know, if you read the media reports on this,
00:01:27.920 they would say there was a motion that had one line in it saying,
00:01:31.360 is climate change real?
00:01:32.760 And it was defeated on the floor of the convention.
00:01:36.120 Well, none of that is true in the way that it's being presented.
00:01:39.380 Let me tell you what happened.
00:01:41.040 Our party already has several references to climate change and the environment
00:01:44.380 in our statement of policy principles as a party.
00:01:47.200 In fact, the targets Canada's chasing to reduce emissions are targets set by Stephen Harper.
00:01:53.860 We've run two elections with climate change as part of our policy.
00:01:57.600 It's an important issue.
00:01:58.920 And this was important to our members.
00:02:00.680 So out of several hundred resolutions, this made it down to the final 34.
00:02:05.680 And it fell short, but it didn't fall short because of that one line.
00:02:09.300 It was paragraphs long talking about provincial plans, large emitter plans.
00:02:14.040 So for some of our members, I think they thought it was too prescriptive.
00:02:17.220 They want climate change policy, but they don't want a top-down Ottawa knows best approach
00:02:21.580 like Justin Trudeau and his tax approach.
00:02:24.040 So it failed narrowly.
00:02:26.960 But I'll tell you, we're going to have a serious and clear climate change plan in the next election.
00:02:32.820 It's important to our caucus, as you know, Jamie.
00:02:35.100 It's important to parents and families.
00:02:38.740 And we're going to do it without burdening people on the margins and small businesses,
00:02:44.080 without the excessive tax approach of Mr. Trudeau.
00:02:47.360 And we're going to try and partner with the provinces as opposed to imposing on the provinces.
00:02:50.760 So it dominated the headlines, but we set records with the convention, 5,700 people or so registered.
00:02:58.380 I gave a speech that's been well-received, Q&A.
00:03:01.840 We had great panels with some of our outreach, some of our amazing female MPs.
00:03:06.620 You know, our hosts, Archie and Leslie Lewis, did an amazing job.
00:03:10.960 So I'm really proud of the convention.
00:03:14.720 Well, I'm going to get to the recovery plan in just a second.
00:03:18.500 But something that was always talked about on our end is the need for technology and innovation.
00:03:25.440 And something I was reading just a little while ago, if we as Canadians were able to export some of the technology we are using already in a lot of our industries,
00:03:34.240 we could significantly and drastically reduce the amount of emissions by the bad actors right across the globe.
00:03:40.180 Absolutely. In fact, Canada is a leader in nuclear, in carbon capture, sequestration, as you know.
00:03:49.860 Some of our energy producers in Alberta have been getting their carbon intensity down in double-digit orders of magnitude over the last decade, decade and a half.
00:04:00.640 This is how we can confront any issue.
00:04:03.260 It's how Brian Mulroney and the Conservatives confronted Acid Rain.
00:04:06.020 By partnering with the Americans and using technology to get emissions down that were causing acid rain and destroying some of the lakes in the Muskokas and the beautiful Kawarthas,
00:04:16.120 which is well represented by a good blue politician that hosts this podcast.
00:04:22.060 So tackling these problems, we have to do it on a combined way with the Americans.
00:04:26.560 And we have to use technology.
00:04:28.060 And then we can take that around the world.
00:04:29.740 Canadian innovation, that's got to be part of our solution.
00:04:33.660 Absolutely.
00:04:34.100 So let's go into the recovery plan.
00:04:36.200 Canada's recovery plan.
00:04:37.240 You got five points.
00:04:38.700 Let's talk about them all.
00:04:39.800 Do you just want to list them and then we can dig deeper into them?
00:04:43.240 Or do you want me to go through one by one?
00:04:45.300 No, we'll list them.
00:04:46.340 You know, the recovery plan could have been called the blueprint for Canada's economic recovery,
00:04:50.300 but you already stole that title.
00:04:51.980 I would have shared.
00:04:53.080 This is Canada's recovery plan to make sure that we lead after the COVID-19 crisis, not lag.
00:05:00.340 We've lagged on rapid tests.
00:05:01.820 We lagged on vaccines.
00:05:03.100 Vaccines.
00:05:03.760 I think we're in, I don't know, 45th or 50th place today.
00:05:07.660 That's embarrassing for a G7 country.
00:05:10.820 So the Canada recovery plan, five pillars to make sure we lead coming out of COVID-19.
00:05:16.140 Number one, lead on jobs.
00:05:17.380 A million jobs in one year.
00:05:18.740 We're not going to stop there.
00:05:19.880 We're going to save Main Street, provide incentives to help businesses bounce back and focus on jobs.
00:05:25.940 Number two, accountability and transparency.
00:05:28.720 We're tired of the liberal scandals.
00:05:30.080 We're tired of the we covered up.
00:05:31.480 Two ministers embarrassed themselves this week, as you know, Jamie, covering up just some simple questions about the whole we scandal and the Trudeau family.
00:05:40.800 Third pillar will be a national mental health action plan.
00:05:43.740 We've got to secure mental health and wellness.
00:05:45.920 Every family's been touched by that throughout this pandemic.
00:05:49.840 Fourth, secure our country.
00:05:51.500 Make sure we're ready for any crisis in the future.
00:05:53.800 Domestic manufacturing of vaccines, PPE.
00:05:56.740 Make sure we're more self-reliant and less reliant on China and bad actors, as you said.
00:06:03.320 And fifth, a plan to get back to balance over the next decade.
00:06:05.940 We can't burden our children and future generations with the mistakes and overspending of today.
00:06:12.240 We needed to help businesses and families through this crisis do that a little bit more, but we have to get back to balance.
00:06:19.480 So a five-point recovery plan, I think it's exactly what the country needs.
00:06:23.460 Leadership, again, as opposed to lagging.
00:06:25.720 And that's some of the things we talked about with other guests on the show over the last year or so, is ensuring that the environment is right for private sector growth in this country.
00:06:36.620 And that is something that you and I have seen in Ontario, when the Ontario Liberals did the Green Energy Act and chased manufacturing jobs away.
00:06:44.360 We have the federal Liberals with almost the same staff that came from Queen's Park, putting their boot on the neck of the oil and gas industry, and in some cases, the mining industry, the anchors of our economy.
00:06:54.880 So there are things right away that we can tackle to start getting these jobs back in order and then providing the spinoff jobs as people, you know, buy things with their discretionary spending.
00:07:08.200 Absolutely.
00:07:09.140 You know, it's the job destruction team around Justin Trudeau, the Jerry Butts and crew that helped Dalton McGinty chase jobs and competitiveness out of Ontario, raise taxes, raise deficits.
00:07:20.100 They're doing the same thing nationally now.
00:07:22.160 Now, you know, the same staffer behind some of the stonewalling on the gas plant scandal in Ontario is the staffer we're trying to call in the cover-up related to Harjit Sajan and sitting on a complaint from a woman in the Canadian Armed Forces about misconduct, sexual misconduct allegations in the Canadian Armed Forces.
00:07:41.940 It's the same crew, and they just cover up, obscure, hide, and downright lie.
00:07:48.740 It's been shameful to see.
00:07:50.920 We need to make sure Ontario is not out of step with Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania.
00:07:56.280 The Great Lakes Basin, as you know, Jamie, we compete for jobs in manufacturing.
00:08:00.840 And since the 1960s, we've been integrated with the Auto Pact and then with free trade.
00:08:05.940 So we can't be excessively taxing, excessively regulating, or we're going to see jobs and investment leak to the U.S.
00:08:12.640 Just like the Supreme Court said there'd be carbon leakage amongst provinces, there's carbon, there's leakage amongst Canada and the U.S., jobs and investment, and we don't reduce emissions.
00:08:22.560 So we need smart policies for a change, and I'll tell you, it's been terrible to see Justin Trudeau's team doing to our national economy what that same group did under McGinty and Wynn.
00:08:34.960 And let's quickly talk about the mental health aspect.
00:08:37.680 We had Todd Doherty on last week to talk about some of the work he's been doing with you and the rest of our caucus.
00:08:43.960 That is something I think, no matter where you are in this country, the pandemic has certainly played on the mental health, regardless of age as well.
00:08:52.940 And that is something I think will resonate because we all, I'm sure, know somebody suffering from mental health because of the measures taken during this pandemic.
00:09:02.960 Absolutely, Jamie.
00:09:04.100 You know, I was just on the line with the Penticton Chamber of Commerce, Penticton and Wine Country Chamber of Commerce.
00:09:10.980 This is one I wish I wasn't on Zoom.
00:09:12.800 Whenever there's wine country in the name of the chamber, I'm assuming their lunch would serve some nice wine.
00:09:18.040 So Zoom is not the same thing.
00:09:20.180 But I talked about a UBC study showed that 65% of the people responding to their studies said someone in their family had suffered a mental health-related issue or incident throughout the COVID crisis.
00:09:33.880 This is an epidemic.
00:09:35.000 I call it the pandemic of tears within the pandemic.
00:09:38.180 And it touches on the opioid crisis.
00:09:39.940 It touches on rising domestic violence and violence towards women.
00:09:44.860 We've seen the horrific spate of violence against partners in Quebec.
00:09:50.320 So we need a national plan to target this.
00:09:52.820 And our action plan will partner with provinces, partner with nonprofits, set some federal leadership on a few levels.
00:10:00.180 And Todd Doherty's work on the three-digit national hotline for suicide prevention will be part of that as well.
00:10:07.420 To think the Liberals haven't even acted quickly on that.
00:10:11.420 There's just no leadership from the Trudeau Liberals.
00:10:14.440 No urgency.
00:10:15.860 We're always behind.
00:10:17.740 They're always putting their friends and insiders first and putting Canadians second.
00:10:23.180 I think Canadians are tired of it.
00:10:25.380 And we need a change.
00:10:27.060 All right.
00:10:27.760 We're almost out of time here.
00:10:29.280 It's unfortunate because I have so many other questions to ask you.
00:10:32.180 I always give the guests the final word.
00:10:34.460 So the floor is yours.
00:10:37.140 Well, I'm the leader of the opposition.
00:10:38.960 So I'm constantly critiquing the Liberals and holding them to account for ethical scandals, you know, bad performance.
00:10:46.080 That's quite easy to do, sadly.
00:10:47.680 But I'm also an optimist.
00:10:50.260 I believe Canada's best days are ahead of us.
00:10:53.500 I really think we're the greatest country in the world.
00:10:55.580 I'm proud of what we do, whether it's the resources in the ground or resources in our heads.
00:11:00.400 We need to restore that type of Canadian optimism, Canadian ingenuity, Canadian leadership that we've seen from Vimy Ridge to today.
00:11:10.260 We need to set our ambitions high and have the leadership to deliver it for our kids and our grandkids.
00:11:17.720 We don't need to settle for second or 45th in the world.
00:11:22.240 We need to fight for the best.
00:11:24.000 And that's the team we're building, Jamie.
00:11:25.980 I think you see that.
00:11:27.220 We've got an incredibly talented team.
00:11:29.440 We're recruiting incredibly talented men and women from coast to coast because Canadians deserve better than the Trudeau team that put their insiders and friends first and Canadians the back of the line.
00:11:40.880 So we're going to fight for all Canadians in our plan to recover post-COVID.
00:11:44.860 Aaron O'Toole, a member of Parliament for Durham, also leader of Canada's Conservatives, leader of the official opposition.
00:11:50.820 But we need your help to make him the Prime Minister of Canada.
00:11:54.000 So you need to like, comment, subscribe, share this program.
00:11:57.280 Help us push back against the ever-moving Liberal agenda.
00:12:00.500 And hopefully then you'll hit someone in your social media network that might be open to hearing that Conservative message, something, again, as I mentioned off the top, that they are not hearing from the mainstream media.
00:12:11.020 Of course, if you can't watch this program all right at once, you can download it later on.
00:12:16.000 And listen to it on platforms like CastBox, iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, you name it.
00:12:20.380 It is out there.
00:12:21.220 We thank Aaron O'Toole for being here today.
00:12:23.380 We'll have him back again.
00:12:24.380 So many questions, lots to talk about.
00:12:26.560 But also, when he is Prime Minister, we'll make sure we have him on this show.
00:12:30.000 Absolutely.
00:12:30.620 Remember, new content every single Tuesday afternoon, 1.30 p.m. Eastern Time.
00:12:34.880 Low taxes, less governments, more freedom.
00:12:36.900 That is the Blueprints.
00:12:38.300 We'll see you next time.
