00:00:00.000 hello and welcome once again to the blueprints this is canada's conservative podcast i'm your
00:00:10.360 host jamie schmail member of parliament for halliburton quarter likes brock fresh off the
00:00:14.620 leadership vote just a few days ago we're going to talk about that next week in a future episode
00:00:19.360 i know you're kind of looking for it this week but we do have an amazing topic an amazing guest
00:00:24.380 on and we ask that you like comment share subscribe to this program together we can push back against
00:00:29.220 the ever-moving liberal agenda if you can't listen or watch to the program in its entirety right this
00:00:34.260 second download it listen to it on platforms like cast box itunes google play spotify you name it
00:00:38.940 it is out there all right let's bring on our guests we're going to talk about energy we're going to
00:00:42.780 talk about the east coast how the east can help the west how the west can help the east and how
00:00:47.060 everybody can come together as a country in this amazing confederation and help each other we're
00:00:52.200 talking to rick perkins a member of parliament for south shore st margaret's in the beautiful
00:00:56.220 province of nova scotia is also the critic for fisheries and oceans thank you very much for
00:01:00.880 coming on rick my pleasure thanks for having me been a while since we had an east coaster on i do
00:01:05.540 apologize for that well well there's a few more of us now so yes you got a few more to choose from
00:01:11.660 jamie than we had before the last election and hopefully the next election we'll have a lot double
00:01:15.560 it again absolutely i love hearing that especially out east all right the the the european union is
00:01:22.700 hurting right now we have energy prices skyrocketing they're out of control right now you have germany
00:01:28.080 the german chancellor in canada a few weeks ago begging for canadian energy and the prime minister
00:01:33.600 says ah there's not a business case for him well okay tips the the market's ready to put money into
00:01:39.840 this the investors are ready to put money in this we we need to get our energy to market we need to get
00:01:45.780 it to the east coast justin trudeau again it's not market forces it's government putting down the
00:01:51.900 industry i don't know uh that justin trudeau would know what a business case was if it bit him in the
00:02:00.020 you know what because there's a massive business case for it the very day that russia invaded ukraine
00:02:06.580 they said no to the lng plant in quebec the very day the lng plant in quebec we've got two proposals
00:02:13.080 for lng plants that have been on the books one in nova scotia one in new brunswick for years that
00:02:18.680 they have been stonewalling against if they hadn't been stonewalling for seven years as government
00:02:23.680 we'd have the pipelines built to the east coast and be able to supply and solve europe's issues
00:02:29.500 they're talking about uh people having to see in britain there are heating bills going up 300 pounds
00:02:37.280 a month people don't know what they're going to do they can't they don't have the money
00:02:41.140 and it's thanks to these policies we have excess oil we can't and gas and we can't get it to market
00:02:47.500 and even in atlantic canada i have to burn saudi arabian oil in my house to heat my house in the
00:02:54.300 in atlantic canada that's just that's a crime that we have to do that absolutely we have tons of energy
00:03:00.300 we have ways to create income opportunities for people create wealth jobs in our own country build
00:03:06.760 it here create it here and export we shouldn't be doing that if the pandemic taught us anything that
00:03:11.400 should be it yeah that's you know the the whole idea that we aren't self uh reliant on our own energy
00:03:19.780 within our own country what's more fundamental than energy security for both your economy and for
00:03:25.800 our just our everyday lives and certainly the war in ukraine has shown how important uh having that
00:03:32.260 sufficiency is self-sufficiency is so the idea that we can't build pipelines because we've got
00:03:39.220 still in place this no tanker bill no pipeline bill that prevented anything from coming to the east coast
00:03:45.140 make no mistake that's why it's there wasn't meant to provide better environmental input it was meant to
00:03:51.740 stop capital from coming to canada and from us in the east coast having again like i say we don't have
00:03:58.220 any pipeline we don't have oil and gas in atlantic canada so our oil comes from saudi arabian tankers
00:04:05.400 to saint john new brunswick to get refined our electricity in nova scotia 58 of our electricity
00:04:12.100 is generated from coal and you might say hey that's great nova scotia has lots of coal not anymore we
00:04:17.800 that coal comes from columbia so they ship coal from columbia to nova scotia to generate electricity
00:04:24.780 but we can't get natural gas and good clean canadian oil to atlantic canada to use to heat
00:04:33.720 our homes and fuel our vehicles and look at all the lost opportunity right you have a lot of expertise
00:04:39.560 in this like as we said before on the show capital takes the path of least resistance just like
00:04:44.440 anything right if there are bottlenecks and this bottleneck in this country seems to be the federal
00:04:50.540 government and its marxist green audiology they're shutting this down the government is doing this 0.67
00:04:56.380 to you they're not doing this for you they're doing this to you that could create jobs opportunity and
00:05:00.960 wealth not only in the west but also in the east we could have self-sufficient energy independence we
00:05:06.540 could actually provide and be a beacon to the world on this but yet our government says no jamie what's
00:05:13.100 our greatest competitive advantage as a country it's always been our natural resources i spent a lot of years
00:05:19.040 in business and in business you're always trying you're only successful if you have a competitive
00:05:23.640 advantage and you spend all your time in business trying to keep that competitive advantage what's
00:05:29.100 our competitive advantage oil and gas fisheries mining forestry agriculture our resources we're blessed
00:05:36.740 with these amazing resources you know you don't hear saudi arabia saying i'm glad i don't have all those
00:05:42.520 trees to manage like canada does it must be a terrible burden like come on guys this is what our
00:05:48.560 competitive advantage is our resources all of them and we have a government whose intent on frankly
00:05:54.460 shutting down all the resource sector not just oil and gas and our wealth has stalled our competitiveness
00:06:01.500 has stalled our economy is falling behind our american and european counterparts because we're not
00:06:10.300 developing our greatest natural resource so it's not too long ago that the united states was an
00:06:15.460 importer of energy now it's an exporter why because they invested in shell gas and natural gas and
00:06:24.680 now they're exporting to the world including to canada we have a pipeline that runs from the u.s
00:06:30.300 to nova scotia bringing natural gas up to nova scotia from the u.s from shell gas but we won't build it
00:06:38.280 from alberta and saskatchewan to the east coast how does that make any sense it is absolutely mind
00:06:43.920 boggling but and energy as we mentioned is climbing in canada has been for a while some provinces have
00:06:50.120 reduced their provincial sales tax on ontario on alberta another we have the european economy
00:06:55.980 basically grinding to a halt you saw stories about germany shutting down steel plants like steel plants
00:07:02.620 because they can't find the energy this is absolutely incredible and we have it here so we have all of this
00:07:09.060 happening cost of living as you mentioned energy crisis people trying to pay their energy bills as
00:07:13.900 families struggling to get by and then you have the atlantic provinces here standing up to the federal
00:07:19.020 government and saying hang on with the carbon tax we don't want the carbon tax to go up to 14 cents a
00:07:24.520 liter on a tank a liter on a fuel for your car yeah well back in the day when trudeau brought in his
00:07:30.680 ineffective carbon tax he we had four provincial liberal governments in atlantic canada and they all
00:07:37.520 cut a deal with trudeau to do their own their own system so in nova scotia for example we have a what's
00:07:44.520 called a cap and trade system all of those systems uh that deal was essentially expiring this year and
00:07:52.100 there was a deadline of september 2nd for the atlantic provinces to say to the federal government
00:07:56.760 are they going to increase the tax on their system for their citizens in order to be compliant with the
00:08:05.680 trudeau uh scheme and all four atlantic premiers three conservative one liberal the liberal in
00:08:13.400 newfoundland said no now is not the time for us to be increasing 14 cents a liter gas when people
00:08:21.400 can't afford to heat their houses when people can't afford food you know i live in a rural riding we
00:08:28.060 don't have public transit in my riding if you need to take your kids to hockey and to school and you need
00:08:33.620 to go get groceries guess what you got to get in your car or your truck to do that you have no choice
00:08:38.600 so putting that additional cost on gas which will put the price of everything up yet again we've
00:08:45.140 already seen more seen more than 10 food inflation everybody knows how crazy it is to try and buy meat
00:08:51.940 now in in canada the cost of meat has gone up the cost of milk the cost of everything's gone up
00:08:57.060 and trudeau wants to increase the carbon tax in atlantic canada what a shock and we know jamie
00:09:03.020 right that it doesn't work his carbon tax has not reduced the uh amount of carbon emissions and
00:09:10.560 nova scotia our premier proposed a net zero plan we have we have eight we have better than eight other
00:09:19.200 provinces in canada we generate more wind electricity obviously we're on the ocean than eight other
00:09:25.900 provinces of canada they put forward a plan to get off our coal plants and said here's what we need
00:09:31.060 we need this hydro it's called the atlantic loop coming down from quebec and newfoundland put all
00:09:37.720 this forward and said we don't need a tax to get the net zero here's the plan and they've proven we've
00:09:43.520 reduced carbon emissions enormously in nova scotia over the last four or five years and the federal
00:09:49.300 government says and trudeau says no we're not going to do that if you don't have a tax on people
00:09:54.480 you don't have a plan well our goal and everyone's goal is to reduce the carbon output and we can do
00:10:01.540 that without doing inefficient taxes that put the price of everything up but actually achieve zero
00:10:08.020 carbon reduction emissions you you boggled my mind there i can't believe it let me i even wrote it down
00:10:14.580 we don't need a tax to get to net zero right that's amazing we've been saying that forever that you can do
00:10:21.340 with technology innovation new ways to do things the energy sector should be a plus b not b minus a
00:10:27.500 and creating shortages and strife but you know this this is this goes to the government trying to
00:10:33.740 control everything and create dependence almost because you're you're talking about the now
00:10:38.320 voluntary 30 reduction of fertilizer used for farmers controlling what we can use in energy this
00:10:43.940 just goes on and on and on and you're not going to get the major emitters of carbon china india europe
00:10:51.320 uh the united states you're not going to get them off coal unless we can get them our liquefied natural
00:10:56.840 gas right they need an alternative to tell them that they should put up solar panels and windmills
00:11:02.000 but the great country that has invested the most in that in the world is germany and with the cutoff of
00:11:08.540 the pipeline from russia germany is now having to restart some of their coal fire plants and their
00:11:14.300 nuclear facilities that they were going to shut down i don't know why they were going to shut down
00:11:18.360 nuclear facilities they don't generate carbon but the dependence and ability of us to generate
00:11:24.640 other types of energy that do not put out the emissions of coal is there and for us not to be doing
00:11:32.580 our part on the climate to help get those countries off coal is really counterintuitive to what justin
00:11:39.960 trudeau says is his goal which is to reduce carbon emissions around the world well we can help but he
00:11:46.420 won't well let's face it the tax has always just been a revenue stream a new revenue stream for
00:11:52.420 government look at british columbia right they've had carbon tax long before anyone else in canada did
00:11:57.060 and it's been shown time and time again you can look on the sierra club website if you need to
00:12:02.000 right there that's not a friend of conservatives but every year that the carbon tax has been in
00:12:06.460 effect in british columbia emissions have gone up but so has revenue to government at one time it
00:12:12.500 was revenue neutral now it's just become blatantly obvious that it's a new stream of revenue for
00:12:17.060 government to spend on whatever they the politicians of the day think is best the parliamentary budget
00:12:22.240 officer you know a neutral officer of parliament did an analysis of this this supposed claim that
00:12:28.040 everyone gets their money back and that the government doesn't keep any is bunk the parliamentary
00:12:32.800 budget office said under trudeau's carbon tax in ontario and alberta by 2030 the average household
00:12:40.800 will be paying twenty nine hundred dollars more a year in carbon tax than they get back they're out of
00:12:47.500 pocket twenty nine hundred bucks more so where's that money going jamie well we know where it's going it's
00:12:53.460 going into the coffers of the federal government to spend on trudeau's useless programs like he's
00:12:59.040 doing now isn't and is out of control spending which is contributing to our inflation and he doesn't
00:13:04.260 seem to get that the spending and odd well actually does contribute to inflation but that tax is a fallacy
00:13:11.380 that they say it's revenue neutral and everyone gets it back they don't get it back parliamentary budget
00:13:16.600 officer has been clear on that and and all these little things that keep adding up and they're
00:13:20.980 starting to become big things that keep adding up it it starts to affect people and their way of life
00:13:26.400 right you you work hard you play by the rules and then you have a bit of extra spending money to maybe
00:13:31.760 take a vacation finish a renovation you know do stuff in life that makes things happy they're not just for
00:13:37.160 the rich elites they're for everybody at least it's supposed to but every time government puts on new
00:13:41.620 regulations red tape they think their ideas are the best but they stifle innovation they start
00:13:46.260 stifle expansion capital you name it that this this has an effect and it slowly starts to eat away
00:13:52.020 at the discretionary spending on individuals and at that point you're just struggling to get by you're just
00:13:56.840 working just to keep your head above water and that's not the way this country was meant to be
00:14:01.840 and that's that's why you're seeing such high levels of frustration the liberals have to actually talk
00:14:06.820 to their constituents would know this the high level of frustration that's been demonstrated in a whole
00:14:12.760 bunch of things and our most recent leadership's a great example people have to pay 15 to be a member
00:14:18.920 of a party we don't give it away free like the liberals do because everything for the liberals i guess
00:14:22.840 they can give it away for free they give away their memberships for free you have to pay 15 to be a member
00:14:27.760 of our party and we have we now have a record amount of party members almost 700 000 canadians
00:14:37.040 paid to join our party to participate in our recent leadership race that's never been seen before in
00:14:44.240 canada and we've got and we had a great an incredible turnout in the leadership uh justin trudeau only a
00:14:51.680 hundred thousand people in his party even when they gave it away free voted for voted in their
00:14:57.540 leadership we had over 400 000 party members uh vote people paid the 15 and that's a sign of the
00:15:05.260 frustration that canadians have with this government and the fact that everything is costing them more
00:15:11.520 and they play by the rules as you said jamie they do everything whether it was through covid they pay
00:15:17.200 their taxes they work hard and at the end of the day they seem to have less money and they don't
00:15:22.960 understand why and it's pretty obvious why when you have a government that spends the way this government
00:15:29.940 does it taxes the way this government taxes and takes more and more out of your pocket every day
00:15:35.120 that's why you can't get ahead rick we're we're almost out of time i do want to ask you i could
00:15:40.540 keep going on this topic for a long time because there's so much to dig into uh why don't you tell
00:15:45.360 us what you've been doing this summer you've been kind of on a committee looking at canada's worst
00:15:50.460 mass shooting uh it happened in the province of nova scotia maybe you can tell us a bit about that
00:15:54.540 because there's something there as well probably you can have you back on the show to talk about this
00:15:58.360 specifically uh because there there there is a lot going on maybe you could just uh go into that for
00:16:03.080 us yeah well we we pushed as the parliament ended in june with uh on an issue that just came up in june
00:16:10.320 which was political interference into the police investigation into canada's largest mass shooting
00:16:17.240 mass murder the that happened in 2020 in nova scotia where 22 uh nova scotians and an unborn baby were
00:16:24.440 murdered in a 24-hour period and uh the liberals clearly used the murder of 22 of my fellow nova
00:16:33.920 scotians as a political football to bring in their order and council banning 1500 firearms and right from
00:16:43.680 the minister's and prime minister's office down and the commissioner of the rcmp appear to have been
00:16:49.780 doing their bidding and trying to push and make sure that the information about what firearms the
00:16:57.400 the killer had was made public in order to support that you know they made that order and council
00:17:03.760 public may 1st 2020 12 days after the mass murder of 22 nova scotians and bill blair at committee we've
00:17:13.600 been having parliamentary committee public safety committee meetings on this bill blair at committee this
00:17:18.160 summer said they decided to release it and do the order and council after the mass murder so in other
00:17:27.140 words they were going to use the mass murder of canadians as a political tool for their uh vain attempt
00:17:35.080 to try and curb crime through harming legal firearm owners while at the same time doing absolutely
00:17:42.040 nothing in fact making it easier for criminals to commit crimes with firearms which are committed
00:17:47.940 not with licensed firearms they're they're not going and getting a pal they're not going and
00:17:52.240 uh storing their firearms properly at home they're all illegal firearms that come across the border
00:17:59.100 that the crimes are committed with almost exclusively and they've lowered the penalties for committing
00:18:04.720 crimes with illegal firearms while at the same time use the murder of 22 nova scotians to uh to
00:18:12.920 put forward their their yet again useless government interference into our law and order system and
00:18:19.540 it's really disgusting you know people in nova scotia and atlantic can are upset that they would use 0.57
00:18:24.740 this tragedy to their families as a uh weapon against firearms and legitimate firearm owners on a separate
00:18:35.740 political agenda so there have been hearings all summer on the mass casualty commission we've been holding
00:18:40.820 parliamentary hearings into the government and the rcmp's political interference and that and that'll
00:18:46.420 continue in the fall uh as soon as the committee starts up again it's just amazing that scandals
00:18:53.240 like this and many others that we have have not even brought down the government but even brought down
00:18:59.040 a minister for crying out loud like the commissioner of the rcmp last week when she appeared or two weeks
00:19:05.340 ago when she appeared before the commission inquiring on this when she was being questioned about her
00:19:10.760 role in advising the government on firearms if you can believe it she actually said she doesn't know
00:19:16.020 the difference between a prohibited and restricted firearm the commissioner of the rcmp who has a
00:19:21.920 legal responsibility to be the senior person in government advising the government on firearms
00:19:27.900 that's absolutely unbelievable uh rick uh i would love to talk to you more about this we are way over
00:19:34.660 time way over time um as as uh you may know i give the guests the last word so uh open up the floor to
00:19:40.820 you your final thoughts and then we'll uh get out of here well i guess it is the travel that we've all
00:19:45.280 seen on those as we've been back in our writings over the summer now that the house is resumed uh is
00:19:50.540 resuming uh number one issue by far is the cost of everything and why is that happening and that's
00:19:56.120 happening because our energy costs are up and our energy costs are up because of the taxation
00:20:01.580 and other legislative issues of this government and and it's time that that we start expressing that
00:20:09.460 across this country including in atlanta canada more actively and aggressively and understanding why
00:20:15.620 it is that this government it feels the need to take more and more money out of your pocket
00:20:20.260 every day for whatever their their politically correct agenda is or woke agenda that they're doing
00:20:28.580 we're going to keep fighting for uh all canadians to try and bring down those costs that get some
00:20:35.260 relief at the pumps uh as the house is back we're going to fight to have a real canadian strategy to
00:20:42.120 deal with inflation we're not going to blame the dog ate my homework strategy which is what the
00:20:47.160 liberals use every time you know it's not my fault inflation it's somebody in europe it's somebody
00:20:52.460 somewhere else we're going to keep fighting in the house for canadians and what they need
00:20:56.120 i love that fire in your belly rick perkins member of parliament for south shore saint margaret's
00:21:01.240 the critic for fisheries and oceans appreciate your time thanks jamie and we appreciate your time as
00:21:06.320 well like i said off the beginning right off the leadership we will talk about that next week i
00:21:10.560 promise you that we did have that important topic i would need it to get it off our chests and be able
00:21:14.640 to vent a bit because it is frustration among millions across this world about why their energy
00:21:20.540 prices are going through the roof or they're being told we're getting brownouts and blackouts so
00:21:24.380 as i asked we ask that you like comment subscribe share this program we can get this word out tell
00:21:30.640 it to your two friends they have two friends and keep that chain going if you can't listen or watch
00:21:35.260 the program in its entirety right the second download and listen to it platforms like castbox
00:21:39.240 itunes google play spotify you name it it is out there new content for you every single tuesday
00:21:44.360 1 30 p.m eastern time until then remember low taxes less governments more freedom that's the blueprints
00:21:50.620 um
00:22:02.700 you
00:22:03.040 you
00:22:03.640 you
