In this episode, Jamie Schmael and her co-host, Raquel D'Angelo, discuss the impact of the Trudeau government's daycare and child care plan, and how it impacts families across the country.
00:25:29.980It's just going to be a world of pain and to think for them to arrogantly say, oh, we'll spend whatever it takes for as long as it takes.
00:25:37.460Well, maybe you maybe you shouldn't. Maybe you should be looking at ways that you can conserve money.
00:25:41.360I mean, has Chrystia Freeland had one conversation with a bureaucrat about, hmm, how could we trim this a little bit?
00:25:47.360I doubt it. And we're going to be the ones to pay for it.
00:25:49.900Our constituents are going to be the ones that are have less money at the end of the month to give to their families because of it.
00:25:55.420And she's just kind of getting off scot free so far, so far. But we'll see.
00:25:59.600So far. Well, we'll see if we can rein that in. But but again, it is just more time, more patience and more money.
00:26:05.660And eventually they will will figure it out. And that is the whole problem with this.
00:26:10.700Their daycare program, along with many of the other pet projects that they are funding in this COVID relief package.
00:26:17.620Some of it is locked in and permanent, meaning you can't really get rid of it without some significant waves.
00:26:23.540And that is the big problem going forward.
00:26:25.480Yeah, I know Chrystia Freeland in her mandate letter when she became Canada's first female finance minister, a big moment for a lot of women.
00:26:33.140And I completely understand that. But in that in that mandate letter, she was said to not create any any permanent spending programs.
00:26:39.860And it's as if that even that never happened. I suppose that was just put in something to satisfy maybe conservative leaning news that they're you know, I don't know why Trudeau would have put that in if he had no intention of ensuring that she abided by that commitment.
00:26:54.000And if Trudeau himself is the one saying, hey, in this mandate letter, hey, maybe maybe we shouldn't do long term spending commitments.
00:27:01.340And yet they're not even meeting that low bar. I just I just, you know, as a woman, I'm happy to see a finance minister in there.
00:27:07.980But really, I mean, she brought forward the largest spending budget in Canadian history and a pie in the sky, 30 billion dollar child care utopian dream.
00:27:16.600Those are the signatures from our first female finance minister. I mean, I'm kind of disappointed to say the least, Jamie.
00:27:23.260I mean, come on, you're making the ladies look bad.
00:27:26.280Well, we we we do have to run. I do want to continue the conversation, but I do give our guests the final word.
