00:01:32.680 All right, so let's start off with this story.
00:01:34.320 Over at Black Locks, parliamentarians slammed the CBC for blacking out local evening newscasts.
00:01:40.980 So the CBC showed some poor judgment.
00:01:43.560 That's what the headline reads over at Black Locks.
00:01:45.660 So we learned that network managers on March 18th, 2020, one week into the pandemic,
00:01:51.500 decided to black out the 6 p.m. newscasts in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg,
00:01:58.560 Windsor, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Fredericton, Halifax, Charlottetown, and St. John.
00:02:03.760 So basically every city in the country.
00:02:06.280 All regular programming was restored by June 15th.
00:02:10.000 This is the first time the CBC has done this since 1952.
00:02:14.580 So the CBC at the time called it a COVID precaution, but did not explain why cutbacks did not affect
00:02:21.160 the French language services.
00:02:22.940 Okay, so this was only English CBC.
00:02:25.820 I cannot stress how short-sighted this would be in our province, given our reliance on local news,
00:02:30.880 said then MP, Liberal MP, Scott Simmons of Newfoundland and Labrador,
00:02:35.440 who was the chair of the Commons Heritage Committee.
00:02:38.420 He wrote this in a letter.
00:02:40.260 The lack of understanding and focus as to the proper role of a public broadcaster is deeply concerning,
00:02:46.420 and it brings into serious questioning the judgment of the executives in times of crisis,
00:02:52.100 wrote MP Wayne Easter, then the Liberal MP in Prince Edward Island and chair of the Commons Finance Committee.
00:02:58.680 Easter said the cuts left Prince Edward Island without a local newscast.
00:03:03.140 The CBC, as a condition of their license, promised at least seven hours of local programming per week.
00:03:10.160 Senator Percy Down of PEI told the chamber another condition was they could not change without approval from the CRTC
00:03:17.740 following a public process of consultation.
00:03:21.100 None of this was done.
00:03:22.620 The CRTC failed in their responsibility, said Downey, who called the news blackout, idiotic.
00:03:27.940 From the beginning of the pandemic, when we need it the most for information, they abandoned the field.
00:03:34.300 CBC executives also received formal protests from the leader of the opposition in Newfoundland and Labrador,
00:03:39.400 the leader of the Newfoundland NDP, and a local First Nations group, and the Federation of PEI municipalities.
00:03:46.380 So even if you defend the CBC, even if you're one of those people who loves the CBC
00:03:49.860 and really believes in the idea of having a public broadcaster or government-run broadcaster,
00:03:55.960 that the sort of basic role that CBC fails is providing local newscasts in markets that don't have the private sector alternatives,
00:04:04.680 so places where there isn't a CTV or a global newscast.
00:04:08.520 The fact that CBC, right in the middle of a pandemic, said, yeah, you know what, we're just going to stop.
00:04:13.220 We're just going to stop doing the news for a couple months here because of COVID.
00:04:16.140 So sorry, you don't get any news at a time where we're having a global pandemic,
00:04:20.880 where people really need the news, where CBC is relied upon in those communities.
00:04:25.560 The fact that CBC, we just back out again, what a total, total joke of a network.
00:04:30.340 What a disgrace.
00:04:31.280 It is so unbelievable that these people get 1.2 billion taxpayer dollars,
00:04:36.200 and they don't even know how to run the most basic elements of a newscaster.
00:04:40.520 If there's any reason to defund this network, there it is right there.
00:04:44.540 The fact that they can't even fulfill the most basic aspects of their mandate, it is idiotic.
00:04:49.700 Absolutely, it is idiotic.
00:04:51.500 They didn't follow through with the basic thing that they were supposed to.
00:04:55.140 But of course, it's the CBC, it's the Canadian government.
00:04:57.320 There's no accountability.
00:04:58.220 There'll be no punishment.
00:04:59.280 They get a stern talking to from these parliamentarians.
00:05:01.940 They don't care.
00:05:02.720 They shrug their shoulders, cash your check, move on, do whatever the heck they want.
00:05:06.720 That's the CBC in a nutshell.
00:05:09.460 Okay, moving on.
00:05:10.320 This is a funny story.
00:05:11.480 This was brought to my attention the other day on the program by my colleague, Anthony
00:05:15.380 Fury, who reminded me of this editorial piece that the CBC put out.
00:05:21.640 It's an editor's note.
00:05:22.940 It says, the planet is changing, so will our journalism.
00:05:26.320 CBC News commits to doing even more climate change journalism.
00:05:30.300 So CBC, what, they're finally going to talk about climate change?
00:05:34.980 CBC is one of the worst offenders when it comes to ratcheting up fear, fear-mongering, promoting
00:05:40.520 this sort of climate anxiety, climate alarmism, doomsday scenarios.
00:05:44.740 Most of the time, they don't pan out to anything.
00:05:46.840 But this idea that the planet is going to end, if we don't send Justin Trudeau and 300
00:05:51.640 other delegates to Scotland as part of this climate change conference, the whole world's
00:05:55.860 going to end, basically, in a nutshell.
00:05:57.320 So CBC is already one of the worst offenders.
00:05:59.120 And here they are pledging that their journalism is going to change because, what, they weren't
00:06:04.740 covering climate change enough, and now they want to cover it even more, and somehow that's
00:06:08.740 going to be a substantive change.
00:06:10.420 So I'll read from the piece.
00:06:11.300 It says, the impact of climate on our changing planet may be the most pressing story of our
00:06:16.160 time.
00:06:16.860 Is it an environmental story?
00:06:18.060 Yes, but it's also a story about health, the economy, jobs, energy, food, water, security,
00:06:22.220 geopolitics, justice, and equity.
00:06:24.660 Okay, so it's not just, so we're learning here, we're not just going to hear more about the
00:06:28.660 environment, but we're going to hear it in the lens of radical left-wing rhetoric here,
00:06:34.380 like justice and equity.
00:06:36.500 Equity is the idea that we should have equality of outcome, not just equality of opportunity,
00:06:41.700 not just equal treatment under the law, equal recognition.
00:06:44.780 No, when you're talking about equity, you're talking about equal outcomes, equal outcomes,
00:06:49.280 and that basically is communism.
00:06:50.880 Everyone has to have the exact same outcome, not about where we start, but it's about where
00:06:55.600 we finish.
00:06:56.020 And so you see it right there in the language that they're really talking about something
00:07:00.700 quite radical here.
00:07:01.660 It says, no sector will be spared its impact.
00:07:04.100 Climate change will define every aspect of our lives and those of generations to come.
00:07:08.720 Every aspect of our life will be defined by climate change.
00:07:12.360 So that, what, includes your marriage, your kids, your house.
00:07:16.360 Like, we're supposed to believe that every single element of our lives is somehow going to
00:07:20.760 be affected by this.
00:07:22.440 So here they say, moving forward, we commit to doing even more.
00:07:27.000 Our pledge is simply that climate change and the endeavors to mitigate its effect will
00:07:31.220 get the sustained journalistic focus and attention they deserve at a time most experts
00:07:37.660 describe as an inflection point for the planet.
00:07:40.640 So again, if we don't send Justin Trudeau to Scotland and 300 other delegates and 400 private
00:07:46.080 planes, if we don't send 30,000 world officials to Scotland, the planet is going to end.
00:07:50.760 But don't worry, these liberals are here to save the planet and the CBC wants to tell
00:07:55.900 us that that's what they're going to do.
00:07:56.880 I really don't understand the point of this editorial note here, editor's blog.
00:08:01.420 Yes, we know you're obsessed with climate change.
00:08:03.240 Yes, we know you promote climate alarmism.
00:08:05.560 No, that's not a change in your journalism.
00:08:07.360 That's just what you've been doing for a very, very long time.
00:08:10.360 And you're going to continue to do it even more so.
00:08:13.220 So expect more propaganda from the CBC on climate.
00:08:16.280 But again, I don't understand the purpose of this other than what maybe it was a slow
00:08:20.020 news day over at the CBC and they wanted content or they just wanted to pat themselves
00:08:23.720 on the back or they wanted to share pictures like this of little kids being used as props.
00:08:29.920 These poor kids, I can't imagine how much anxiety they have from people around them telling
00:08:35.760 them that the world is going to end.
00:08:37.680 And if we don't all just, what, completely abandon our modern way of life, give up on
00:08:41.820 cars, airplanes, heating our homes in the winter, all these things that fossil fuels enable,
00:08:48.660 if we don't just kind of give that all up, the planet is going to end.
00:08:51.460 So here we're kind of left with this position, which again, is really hard for little kids
00:08:55.400 to understand.
00:08:56.240 It really does promote a lot of anxiety.
00:08:58.280 But the idea is we either abandon our modern way of life or our planet implodes in a fiery
00:09:04.380 ball of flames, which is a pretty scary proposition, especially for a little kid.
00:09:09.960 So again, just total ridiculousness from the CBC.
00:09:14.240 So if you tuned into last week's show, you know that we covered this really, really silly
00:09:18.640 opinion piece that was published by the CBC.
00:09:21.940 CBC only recently started doing opinion pieces.
00:09:23.960 This is something from the last couple of years.
00:09:26.200 But it's really strange because the state broadcaster is there to provide news and news is different
00:09:32.580 than opinion, right?
00:09:33.220 There's sort of different areas of journalism.
00:09:36.020 You can be an opinion columnist.
00:09:37.640 That's what I do.
00:09:38.320 I write an opinion column for the Toronto Sun.
00:09:40.560 Or you can be a straight news reporter, someone who just provides the news.
00:09:43.840 Of course, the whole trouble with journalism in a nutshell is that the lines between these
00:09:49.020 two types of journalism is really, really blurred.
00:09:51.060 So when you're watching the Candace Malcolm show, when you're watching True North, when you're
00:09:53.980 reading my columns in the Toronto Sun or on TNC.news, you know my worldview, you know
00:09:58.980 my position, you know the way that I'm going to view a story and the lens that I'm
00:10:03.160 going to use to present the news.
00:10:04.940 The problem is that so many other journalists, every other journalist and every other outlet
00:10:09.480 also has their own worldview.
00:10:11.020 They have their own political opinions, but they lie and they pretend that they're completely
00:10:14.880 neutral.
00:10:15.580 They pretend that they're completely apolitical.
00:10:17.360 But then by the positions that they put out and the way that they talk about different
00:10:20.940 political parties, it's very obvious that they're biased and that it's full of spin
00:10:25.420 and that they're not straight journalists.
00:10:27.240 They're not straight news reporters, but they're dishonest with the public about where
00:10:31.280 they stand.
00:10:32.140 And that's why trust in journalism really is at an all-time low.
00:10:35.560 But again, this idea that the CBC is going to put out opinion, it's really strange because
00:10:40.220 it's the state broadcaster.
00:10:41.480 It's not supposed to be pushing out opinions.
00:10:44.400 It's kind of the purpose of an opinion journalist is to put out strong opinions that some people
00:10:49.200 are going to really disagree with, other people are going to really like.
00:10:51.860 And by virtue of that, you're kind of polarizing or divisive in some ways.
00:10:55.980 And so again, when it's the CBC doing that, it's like, is this the official endorsed position
00:11:01.380 of the CBC?
00:11:02.240 Because if it's controversial, it reflects really badly on the CBC.
00:11:05.540 That's what we had last week with that really strange tirade from the elections Canada official
00:11:10.420 who believed that all white people and all conservatives were evil racist bigots, basically
00:11:16.000 like a paranoid screed about how much she distrusts her fellow Canadians.
00:11:21.540 And it was so bad that the CBC had to actually go out and rewrite it because it was so awful.
00:11:25.980 Well, the CBC didn't learn its lesson.
00:11:27.760 They're continuing to pump out these bizarre opinion pieces.
00:11:30.400 So a couple of note from this week.
00:11:33.680 Here is a piece that says, if you really want to affect climate change, talk to women.
00:11:39.080 And then the sub headline here, it says, it's not that men are useless.
00:11:43.000 It's that women are useful and are more likely to take action.
00:11:46.900 OK, it's not that men are useless.
00:11:48.500 It's just that women are more useful.
00:11:50.200 OK, the CBC.
00:11:51.620 So let's delve into this piece a little bit.
00:11:53.700 So the basic premise of this piece is that women are more susceptible to climate marketing.
00:11:58.560 And so coming from a marketing perspective, it's better to target women because they're more
00:12:03.440 more susceptible to the messages.
00:12:05.640 They're more likely to not know a lot about the issue.
00:12:09.620 And therefore, when you tell them a little bit about the issue, they're more likely to
00:12:13.260 buy into whatever you're saying.
00:12:14.600 In a nutshell, that's what this piece is about.
00:12:16.920 So she says, according to research by Yale Climate Communications, we also know that women
00:12:21.520 are much more likely to be undecided or admit that they don't know about many of Canada's
00:12:26.940 key climate policies, as evidenced by recent polling.
00:12:30.940 For example, in April 2021, a poll by Campaign Research said that women were more than twice
00:12:37.340 as likely across all age groups to say they didn't know whether they supported carbon tax.
00:12:42.100 Men were almost twice as likely to say they strongly oppose the policy across all age groups.
00:12:47.440 She believes that household spending is based on climate change.
00:12:50.460 She says women are much likelier than men to control household spending, which is where
00:12:54.740 the big climate decisions are made.
00:12:56.980 Who should you talk to about getting that new heat pump or energy efficient appliance?
00:13:00.520 The person who is worried about climate and also happens to manage the household budget.
00:13:05.560 So she's saying to focus your energy in promoting climate alarmism at women so they have more
00:13:11.500 anxiety about the climate, so that they're more worried about the climate, so that they will
00:13:15.600 do what you say.
00:13:16.380 So again, taking a step back, she's basically saying that women are more ignorant on the topic
00:13:21.260 and therefore more persuadable, which doesn't really speak very highly about women or about the
00:13:27.560 tactics of the CBC or people who are pushing climate propaganda.
00:13:33.700 Now moving on to the next CBC op-ed here.
00:13:37.720 This is another one of those first person's essays, so similar to the one that we talked
00:13:41.540 about last week.
00:13:42.580 This one says,
00:13:43.340 My climate anxiety has turned me into a trash hoarder.
00:13:48.560 And then the person says,
00:13:50.020 In an effort not to be wasteful, I'm creating a bigger mess at home.
00:13:54.000 So again, really just strange things to be promoting over at the CBC.
00:13:59.600 Are we supposed to be like this guy?
00:14:01.320 Really, what he's saying is that all of this doomsday scenario, all this idea of climate
00:14:06.480 alarmism, the planet's going to end if we don't take action right away, is making people
00:14:11.380 go crazy, and this is a pretty good first person account of that.
00:14:16.340 Okay, I want to move on here.
00:14:17.580 So we have the COP26 conference going on over in Scotland.
00:14:21.460 We'll be covering that really closely here on the Candace Malcolm Show.
00:14:24.180 And it really got me thinking about all of the doomsday scenarios and projections that
00:14:29.740 we've been hearing about for so long that don't really make sense.
00:14:32.740 And I want to point out a couple instances of the media sort of jumping in and promoting,
00:14:38.620 doing the dirty work of all these politicians who want you to believe
00:14:41.100 that we have some kind of an existential threat when it comes to the climate, that the planet's
00:14:44.680 going to end if we don't take action, if all of these officials aren't immediately flown
00:14:48.960 to Scotland, so they can sit around and come up with schemes that will make us all poor
00:14:52.920 and make them feel better, so they can virtue signal, basically.
00:14:57.080 And so I went on to Twitter the other day, and this story was promoted all over Twitter.
00:15:01.360 It was from Time Out London.
00:15:03.280 It says, nine cities that could be underwater by 2030.
00:15:06.140 So this is a kind of alarmism that they love to promote.
00:15:08.320 This idea that our world will somehow substantially change, fundamentally change in our lifetime.
00:15:14.720 They love ground numbers, too, so it's always by a certain date.
00:15:17.620 It's always by, you know, 2000, 2020.
00:15:20.080 This one's by 2030.
00:15:21.380 So nine cities that could be underwater.
00:15:23.440 Here's what the headline says.
00:15:24.460 It says, global warming can be difficult to properly visualize.
00:15:27.620 If you're not directly threatened by rising sea levels, suffering water shortages, or ravaged
00:15:32.140 by wildfires, how do you know it's really happening?
00:15:34.200 That's why projects like Climate Central are essential.
00:15:37.920 The website creates maps that show which parts of the world could find themselves underwater
00:15:41.680 due to rising sea levels as early as 2030.
00:15:44.840 So again, the whole concept is just a fearmonger here.
00:15:47.740 So I took a look at this map.
00:15:49.300 These cities that supposedly could be underwater, and it's just so silly.
00:15:53.080 It's so absurd.
00:15:53.900 Mostly because all of these cities are already underwater.
00:15:57.080 These cities are already underwater.
00:15:58.400 So we'll just keep going on this Twitter thread here.
00:16:01.000 So it says, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague sit low, flat, and close to the North Sea.
00:16:05.960 The Dutch are famed for their flood defenses, and it seems the country's dikes, dams, barriers,
00:16:10.420 levees, and floodgates could become even more essential in the years to come.
00:16:13.960 So they're trying to scare us and say that Amsterdam could be underwater.
00:16:17.940 But then it says right here that the Dutch are famed for their flood defenses.
00:16:21.220 And why is it?
00:16:21.940 Why are they famed for their flood defenses?
00:16:23.640 Why are they famed for the country's dikes, dams, barriers, levees, and floodgates?
00:16:27.440 It's because Amsterdam is already underwater.
00:16:30.520 It's underwater.
00:16:31.400 It's been underwater for a very, very long time.
00:16:33.640 And that is why they have all these systems.
00:16:35.560 That's why they've become world leaders and innovators in this idea that the city is built
00:16:40.200 below sea level.
00:16:41.460 And so they have to have all of these mechanisms to keep the city from flooding, even though
00:16:46.560 it floods from time to time.
00:16:48.480 And so fact check here, 26% of the Netherlands is already below sea level.
00:16:53.560 50% of the country is less than one meter above sea level.
00:16:57.580 And so because sea level varies by about 1.5 meters high and low tides and during storms,
00:17:03.280 it means that at some times, currently right now, up to 60% of the Netherlands is vulnerable
00:17:09.820 to flooding from the sea.
00:17:11.820 So that's why they have all of these systems and it's already underwater.
00:17:15.740 So the silly idea that global warming is going to cause the city to flood is absurd.
00:17:20.460 It goes on.
00:17:21.100 Most of the examples are just like this.
00:17:23.120 They found cities that are below sea level and they say that they're going to be flooded
00:17:26.820 by 2030.
00:17:27.860 Well, yeah, of course, because they're built below sea level.
00:17:30.600 Here's another one, New Orleans.
00:17:32.680 So it says, again, without the city's systems of levees, New Orleans would be severely threatened
00:17:37.280 by rising sea levels.
00:17:39.000 Even with them, the damage looks catastrophic.
00:17:41.740 Again, fact check.
00:17:43.020 Why is New Orleans vulnerable to flooding?
00:17:45.980 It's because it's sinking.
00:17:46.960 So this is according to CNN.
00:17:48.920 When it was built, New Orleans was barely above sea level.
00:17:51.440 But it was built on loose soil.
00:17:53.340 The drainage system has unintended consequences.
00:17:56.460 And so New Orleans is already underwater and it's sinking.
00:18:00.000 And that's been the case for a really, really long time.
00:18:01.960 So don't sit there and blame climate change.
00:18:05.380 So this is like one rare case where media might actually get it right.
00:18:08.640 They might, their predictions might actually come true that these 10 cities are underwater
00:18:12.440 in 2030 because most of them are already underwater in 2021.
00:18:16.200 So that one was fine.
00:18:18.240 But I do want to highlight some climate predictions that went horribly wrong.
00:18:22.080 I've covered this before on Twin North.
00:18:23.860 I've covered it before on the Candace Malcolm show.
00:18:25.580 But because everyone's out at COP26 pontificating and bloviating about all their climate importance,
00:18:31.420 it's worthwhile to say that human beings are often wrong.
00:18:34.900 Human beings are usually worried about our environment.
00:18:37.940 That's sort of like hardwired in.
00:18:39.640 And for at least the last 50 years, there have been scientists and public intellectuals
00:18:45.280 and world leaders who have claimed that some various threat is going to end humanity.
00:18:49.800 That something that we do, be it because of famines or because of an ice age coming or
00:18:54.320 because of a nuclear holocaust or because of now climate change and global warming, the
00:18:59.960 planet's going to end, species are all going to go extinct.
00:19:02.400 They've been making these predictions for a very long time.
00:19:04.500 So let's look at a couple examples of some climate predictions that have gone horribly wrong.
00:19:08.780 So back in 1978, the Vancouver Sun cited a paper in the Journal of Science, the University
00:19:14.160 of Washington.
00:19:15.280 Researchers predicted that the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere will have doubled
00:19:19.960 by 2020.
00:19:21.660 And yet the CO2 in the atmosphere hasn't come close to doubling since 1978.
00:19:26.020 So back in 1978, when the article was published, there were 335 parts per million of CO2 in the
00:19:32.600 atmosphere.
00:19:33.440 But in February 2020, the same organization reported that there were 413 parts per million
00:19:38.200 in the atmosphere that represents an increase of about 23%, a far cry from doubling.
00:19:44.660 Okay, moving on.
00:19:45.480 This is a claim that we have covered on the show before because Al Gore talked about it
00:19:49.040 in his 2006 documentary, An Inconvenient Truth.
00:19:52.040 He predicted that there would be no snow on Mount Kilimanjaro by 2020.
00:19:56.520 This is something that lots and lots of different geologists and environmentalists predicted.
00:20:02.280 According to a geologist at the Ohio State University, Blondie Thompson said, at this rate, all of
00:20:08.340 the ice will be gone between 2010 and 2020.
00:20:11.340 And that is probably a conservative estimate.
00:20:14.040 And yet in February 2020, the Times of London reported that the staying power of Mount Kilimanjaro
00:20:19.620 snow defines Al Gore's gloomy forecast.
00:20:22.460 So this prediction apparently helped tourism for Mount Kilimanjaro.
00:20:27.000 The owner of a trucking company called Just Kilimanjaro said that the snow has certainly
00:20:31.360 got my clients talking.
00:20:33.260 Many people have made Kilimanjaro a bucket list priority because of the Al Gore deadline.
00:20:38.720 When they get there, they're pleasantly surprised to see lots and lots of snow.
00:20:42.200 And finally, this one comes from True North over at tnc.news.
00:20:46.860 Glacier National Park removed a sign predicting that the glaciers would be gone by 2020.
00:20:51.820 So a national park in the United States, the northern part of the U.S., just south of the
00:20:55.840 Alberta border in Montana called Glacier National Park.
00:20:58.640 I've been there.
00:20:58.960 It is absolutely beautiful.
00:21:00.600 But there was a sign that said that the park's glaciers will be gone by 2020 due to global
00:21:06.220 warming.
00:21:07.100 They had to take that sign down, though, because the glaciers are still going strong.
00:21:10.520 There are still 26 glaciers at Glacier National Park, and the sign was quietly removed in
00:21:18.120 late 2019 because the prediction just simply didn't come true.
00:21:22.840 And this isn't a bad thing.
00:21:24.300 This is a great thing.
00:21:25.300 All of the fearmongering, all of the doomsday scenarios didn't turn out.
00:21:29.980 That's great news.
00:21:30.680 That's great news.
00:21:31.260 It means that our planet is persevering.
00:21:33.160 It means that there are innovations, that human ingenuity is making the world a better
00:21:37.920 place.
00:21:38.320 So don't listen to the people who want you to be crippled with fear, who want you to be
00:21:43.020 hoarding garbage because of your climate anxiety.
00:21:45.520 It's not a healthy way to live.
00:21:47.080 No, the CBC is wrong.
00:21:49.300 Climate change doesn't impact every aspect of our lives.
00:21:52.460 Sure, we should care for the environment.
00:21:54.020 We should do our best to make sure that future generations get to enjoy the natural environment
00:21:58.740 in the same way that we do.
00:21:59.880 We should be committed to preserving the national environment, to make it clean, to make sure
00:22:04.400 that, you know, that we're not doing something to catastrophically damage the planet.
00:22:10.040 But again, all of these doomsday scenarios that are promoted by a hysterical alarmist
00:22:14.780 media do not help.
00:22:16.280 They only make the situation worse.
00:22:18.380 Thanks so much for watching.
00:22:19.280 This is Fake News Friday.
00:22:20.100 I'm Candice Malcolm, and this is The Candice Malcolm Show.
00:22:22.020 I'm Candice Malcolm, and this is The Candice Malcolm Show.
