Did Prime Minister Justin Trudeau break his government's own rules by visiting his family
00:00:09.960
over the Easter long weekend? He sure did. But remarkably, many Canadians don't seem to believe
00:00:16.360
it. When I posted this message on social media on Monday morning, it caused quite the stir,
00:00:22.160
to say the least. Mainstream media journalists and partisan liberals on Twitter were quick to
00:00:27.720
refute my claim. And many suggested that I was being unfair and that I was wrong. So let's set
00:00:33.760
the record straight, shall we? What rules did Trudeau break? Well, first off his background,
00:00:39.280
Justin Trudeau has been staying alone at Rideau Cottage, which is a home on the property of 24
00:00:44.140
Sussex in Ottawa since March 29th. That is when his wife, Sophie Trudeau, tested negative for
00:00:50.900
coronavirus after previously having the disease. And that's when she and her three kids packed up
00:00:56.660
and moved to Harrington Lake, Quebec, the official country residence of the Prime Minister.
00:01:03.200
So in order for Trudeau to travel to Quebec to his country residence to see his family and stay with
00:01:09.160
his family, Trudeau broke the following rules. Number one, he crossed a provincial boundary and
00:01:15.840
entered Quebec. So after telling Canadians not to travel, after telling Canadians to stay at home,
00:01:21.940
Trudeau himself packed up his bags and headed for his country residence in rural Quebec. He crossed a
00:01:28.500
provincial border into Quebec in order to do that, despite that border being closed. Gatineau police
00:01:35.600
set up checkpoints on interprovincial roadways last Wednesday in an unprecedented effort to enforce
00:01:41.780
the province's new ban on non-essential travel into western Quebec. Now, sure, it's only about 35
00:01:48.560
kilometers between the two residents, but Trudeau had to cross a boundary that was closed to other
00:01:54.600
Canadians. Gatineau police said checkpoints were set up at bridges, ferries, and major intersections,
00:02:00.900
and that drivers could be fined up to $6,000 for trying to make non-essential trips. Trudeau and his
00:02:09.700
motorcade were let right through, while other families trying to do the exact same thing were turned away.
00:02:16.460
Number two, Trudeau went to a cottage. Justin Trudeau's top public health official, Dr. Teresa Tam,
00:02:24.460
has stressed on multiple occasions for Canadians not to travel to their cottage, cabin, camp, or rural
00:02:30.220
home because of the potential strain on health care in smaller rural communities. This is a quote
00:02:36.440
from Twitter from Dr. Teresa Tam. COVID time is not cottage time. Stay home and resist the urge to head to
00:02:44.240
the cottage or rural setting. Don't add further strain on communities with less capacity to manage
00:02:50.340
COVID-19. Do your part, flatten the curve, plank the curve. So Canadians, you can't go to your cottage.
00:02:57.160
Justin Trudeau, go right ahead. Number three, Trudeau visited family who don't live with him.
00:03:04.920
Justin Trudeau has told us on many occasions that he lives in one household, Rideau Cottage,
00:03:09.800
and that his family lives in another, Harrington Lake. But according to his government's own rules,
00:03:15.640
they should have celebrated Easter digitally through social media or through Skype or Zoom.
00:03:22.140
Here are just a handful of the many examples of Trudeau government officials telling Canadians that
00:03:27.560
they cannot visit family members living in other households. The CBC report specifically says,
00:03:33.960
and I quote, physical distancing means not interacting with anyone outside of your household,
00:03:40.840
including immediate family members and significant others who don't live with you, unquote. Here are
00:03:47.760
just a handful more Trudeau officials telling Canadians not to do exactly what Justin Trudeau did.
00:03:54.180
Dr. Teresa Tam, the choice of where to be home in your bubble with existing household members only
00:04:01.080
has never been clearer. Again, Dr. Teresa Tam, now is the critical time to maintain our physical
00:04:08.760
distancing. This means having dinners and celebrating with household members only and connecting with
00:04:15.060
others virtually over phone, email, and video chat. Dr. Teresa Tam, physical distancing and not being
00:04:22.680
able to gather together is difficult. Thank you for celebrating virtually and at home with members of
00:04:28.680
your household to slow the spread of coronavirus. Deputy Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Howard New.
00:04:37.100
Unfortunately, any religious celebrations this year will have to be strictly limited to your existing
00:04:43.580
household members only. Dr. Teresa Tam, this means dinners and celebrations will need to be strictly
00:04:52.100
limited to your existing household members only. So you can't visit your family unless they live in the
00:04:59.840
same household, but those rules don't apply to Trudeau. Number four, Trudeau's wife Sophie posted photos
00:05:06.640
of Justin Trudeau and his family doing an outdoor Easter egg hunt together after Justin Trudeau had
00:05:14.040
specifically told Canadians not to go outside and specifically to do their Easter egg hunts indoors.
00:05:22.100
You'll have to stay home. You'll have to Skype that big family dinner. And the Easter egg hunt, well,
00:05:29.060
it'll have to happen around the house instead of around the neighborhood. And finally, number five,
00:05:35.360
Justin Trudeau left his house. He went outside and he enjoyed the great outdoors. Just days after
00:05:42.300
telling Canadians the exact opposite, to stay inside, to not leave their homes, and to not go out into public
00:05:49.860
parks this weekend. But you know what? Rules like these are for the little people. Trudeau likes to
00:05:56.180
say we're all in this together, but he doesn't seem willing to follow the same set of rules that he
00:06:00.760
demands that we follow. Perhaps the worst part of all of this is that everyday Canadians are getting
00:06:06.160
ridiculous and exorbitant fines, frankly, for doing far less than what Justin Trudeau himself did.
00:06:12.420
And equally as bad, rather than fielding tough questions from the media and having to answer
00:06:18.020
for his hypocrisy, so many journalists in the mainstream media were falling over themselves
00:06:24.020
to defend Justin Trudeau and to attack me, a journalist, simply for asking the wrong questions.
00:06:32.160
All of these people are doing a disservice to Canada. For True North, I'm Candace Malcolm.
