00:01:44.000 Hey, everybody.
00:01:45.000 Welcome to this episode of the Charlie Kirk Show.
00:01:47.000 Super thrilled to be with us today.
00:01:49.000 Jimmy Page, who is the author of a pretty awesome book, One Word That Will Change Your Life.
00:01:55.000 Yes.
00:01:55.000 Yes.
00:01:56.000 That's a pretty big statement.
00:01:57.000 It's a big promise, isn't it?
00:01:59.000 Yeah.
00:01:59.000 You know, it's a big promise.
00:02:00.000 So the premise of the book is that instead of all these broken New Year's resolutions where you can just kind of get lost in the details, you find one word.
00:02:09.000 Yes.
00:02:10.000 And you pick a word and that should really be your focal point for the whole year.
00:02:14.000 Yeah.
00:02:15.000 And we've seen, you know, it's been 22 years of this now for me, my co-authors, Dan Britton and John Gordon, another tremendous author who's written prolifically.
00:02:25.000 22 years ago, we started this process because a friend of ours challenged us to, you know, throw out the New Year's resolutions.
00:02:31.000 And he said, hey, what's your word for the year?
00:02:33.000 And we were like, I don't even know what you mean by that.
00:02:37.000 But at the time, we were doing the New Year's resolution thing.
00:02:40.000 You know, we would come up with our list and we would literally have 40 or 50 things.
00:02:44.000 Dan and I are competitive athletes, former athletes, still competing.
00:02:49.000 And we would create a game plan for the year.
00:02:51.000 And what we discovered was we had a lot of frustration, a lot of failure like everybody else.
00:02:55.000 Within 30 days, we forgot most of our goals.
00:02:58.000 Within 90, the whole concept of resolutions was gone.
00:03:01.000 And he said, hey, let's narrow this to one word and see if the life change that we experience is better than New Year's Resolutions.
00:03:09.000 And we had tremendous results now for 22 years.
00:03:13.000 So if I'm not mistaken, your thesis is it's more about being than doing.
00:03:17.000 Is that right?
00:03:18.000 Yes.
00:03:18.000 And so maybe the word I would choose is perseverance for a year like this, right?
00:03:23.000 What does that mean?
00:03:24.000 Is it just, does it apply to all facets of life?
00:03:27.000 Or is it that you pick that word?
00:03:30.000 How does one even find one word?
00:03:32.000 Oh, yeah.
00:03:33.000 Well, I mean, I think your first comment about, you know, focusing on being, you know, a lot of times the New Year's resolutions is really a list of to-dos, you know, and one word is more about who we're going to become rather than what we're going to get done.
00:03:45.000 And so if you focus on internal change, it always results in external activity and success in many ways.
00:03:53.000 We just figured, hey, let's look at the six dimensions of life: mental, physical, emotional, relational, spiritual, and even financial.
00:04:00.000 And let's see if by focusing on one single word for the year, that we can have tremendous life change.
00:04:05.000 It's all about life change, becoming the person that you're made to be.
00:04:09.000 And that's what we've experienced.
00:04:11.000 So, tell me some of the stories that you've seen throughout the years.
00:04:14.000 You work with Christian athletes, and you yourself were an athlete.
00:04:18.000 So, you do a lot of people that are goal-oriented.
00:04:20.000 I want to win conference, I want to win state, I want to get a scholarship.
00:04:25.000 And that's just in the athletic realm, there's a million different words you could put: disciplined, agile.
00:04:31.000 You know, perseverance might be one.
00:04:32.000 Perseverance is a good word.
00:04:33.000 It's probably one that comes up a lot.
00:04:34.000 It's there a lot, yes.
00:04:35.000 And so, but just taking a step back, how do you even find the right word?
00:04:41.000 Yeah.
00:04:42.000 Because people might be worried, I don't even know what I want to do, let alone how to describe it.
00:04:46.000 Right.
00:04:46.000 Well, we created a simple process.
00:04:48.000 You know, a book that's focused on one word and the power of one word had to create a simple process, of course, to get it.
00:04:54.000 And it's three easy steps: it's look in, look up, and look out.
00:04:59.000 Explain them all.
00:05:00.000 Brilliant, right?
00:05:01.000 Looking in is where we unplug from the chaos of life, you know, the distractions and the disruption.
00:05:07.000 I mean, I think of this last year being mostly a year of disruption.
00:05:12.000 We always have distractions, but disruption is different.
00:05:15.000 Stuff that happens to us oftentimes is beyond our control.
00:05:18.000 So when we look within, we shut off the noise of life, shut off the busyness, and we ask simple questions like, what do I need most?
00:05:26.000 You know, what's in the way of me becoming the person that God made me to be?
00:05:31.000 What has to go?
00:05:32.000 What are some of those things that are preventing me from being my very best?
00:05:35.000 And we'll ask that question: if there was one word that we could focus on this year that would bring the greatest positive life change internally, inside out, what would it be?
00:05:44.000 So, you know, you look at a year like this and you're reflecting back on some challenges that we probably faced.
00:05:49.000 You know, I also think that 2020 was a year of tremendous opportunity.
00:05:53.000 So it wasn't all bad, right?
00:05:54.000 You know, there's a lot of good, but we would focus in on what are the things that are going to, if they changed, would bring the greatest positive change to our lives.
00:06:03.000 And so looking inward and then looking up.
00:06:06.000 So obviously a spiritual component.
00:06:07.000 I'm guessing that's what it means.
00:06:09.000 Yeah.
00:06:09.000 When we wrote the book, we really wanted it to be a big net, wide audience.
00:06:13.000 We didn't want to just write for people who were necessarily strong or deep in their faith, but we wanted to create a guideline that said, hey, we're men of faith.
00:06:22.000 Dan, John, and I are men of faith.
00:06:24.000 We're all believers.
00:06:25.000 And we do believe that the Creator has made us with great purpose.
00:06:28.000 He's created us to do good work, so to speak.
00:06:32.000 And so when we look up, it's really that step of saying, God, if you were to do one thing in me this year, that would have the greatest positive impact on others and on the world around us.
00:06:43.000 The greatest positive influence.
00:06:45.000 What would that word be?
00:06:46.000 And that's a time when we pray.
00:06:48.000 We all discover our word in different ways.
00:06:50.000 Sometimes, most of the time, I discover my word when I'm on a bike or I'm on a treadmill or I'm exercising.
00:06:56.000 I don't know if it's the higher oxygen content that I have in my brain, but others will do their quiet time in the morning.
00:07:03.000 They'll be in the word of God and they'll discover their word in a different way.
00:07:06.000 So you've been doing this for 21 years.
00:07:09.000 Can you talk about some of the stories of how one word has been able to help you?
00:07:14.000 And do you state, do you keep it throughout the year?
00:07:16.000 Do you almost think about it daily?
00:07:18.000 Oh, yeah.
00:07:19.000 It is.
00:07:19.000 In fact, step three is to look out.
00:07:21.000 So it's look in, look up, and look out.
00:07:23.000 And look out is where you tell your inner circle of friends the word that you've selected.
00:07:28.000 You tell them why that became the word for the year.
00:07:31.000 And then they hold you accountable and they ask you questions throughout the year.
00:07:34.000 But, you know, some of the greatest stories are when we're working with teams or we're working with businesses and they'll create their own word for the year.
00:07:43.000 And then at their staff meetings, you know, once a month, they'll come in and say, hey, how's it going?
00:07:47.000 And everyone at that table will share their word and share stories about how it's bringing life change.
00:07:52.000 And so it's obviously more than just a word.
00:07:54.000 It's a course correction or a true north.
00:07:57.000 So what's the process that you should go to find that word, though, in November or December?
00:08:02.000 Let's pretend it's today because we're in February.
00:08:04.000 And right now, New Year's resolutions have already been shattered.
00:08:07.000 It's actually a perfect month to be doing this podcast.
00:08:09.000 I was going to go to the gym.
00:08:11.000 I was going to lose 10 pounds.
00:08:12.000 I was going to stop drinking.
00:08:14.000 I was going to... stop doing video games or whatever it might be.
00:08:17.000 And people are saying, that's it.
00:08:19.000 This year is just as bad as the other one.
00:08:21.000 What's the process?
00:08:22.000 I mean, you say that it comes to you maybe when you're working out.
00:08:25.000 Maybe other people are just struggling.
00:08:27.000 They say, look, I got a list of problems.
00:08:29.000 I mean, I got a lot of different words that come to mind, and none of them are exactly aspirational.
00:08:29.000 Yeah.
00:08:34.000 You know, they might be four-letter words.
00:08:36.000 Right?
00:08:36.000 We have seen those.
00:08:37.000 Yeah, I'm sure you have, right?
00:08:39.000 So what would your advice be?
00:08:41.000 People are listening right now.
00:08:42.000 We have a lot of younger listeners.
00:08:43.000 We see their emails, and there's a lot of pain right now.
00:08:46.000 Shut down school, suicide, alcoholism, depression, job displacement, relationships being shattered.
00:08:51.000 And there's always pain.
00:08:52.000 It just seems as if it's been an extra insult to injury the last year.
00:08:56.000 And there's a young person listening to this right now.
00:08:57.000 They're like, okay, I'm taking notes, but I can't, what would you say to that person?
00:09:03.000 Where do they start?
00:09:04.000 Yeah, I would say a lot of times we get stuck with our head down.
00:09:06.000 You know, we get our focus on all the things that are wrong or the things that we're struggling with or the problems that we have.
00:09:13.000 I mean, for example, my daughter is a senior in high school.
00:09:16.000 She has lost two full seasons of lacrosse, plus school.
00:09:19.000 I don't think she's as worried about the school, but she cares about the lacrosse.
00:09:23.000 And there's a lot of disappointment.
00:09:24.000 And I think once your focus narrows to the challenges that you're facing, one word gives you an opportunity to lift your head up, lift your eyes up, and create a positive, optimistic picture for the future.
00:09:36.000 So if there is a word that could get you out of some of the anxiety and stress and depression in many ways, if there was a word that could lift you out of that, that by focusing on that and then creating a positive expectation, what's going to happen in my life?
00:09:51.000 For example, a couple years ago, my word was unstoppable.
00:09:55.000 Actually, heading into 2020.
00:09:57.000 So 2019, I journeyed with the word.
00:09:58.000 Do you remember all your words?
00:09:59.000 I do.
00:10:00.000 Oh, we got to go.
00:10:01.000 Don't piss me.
00:10:01.000 No, we got to go through that in a second.
00:10:03.000 I got to have a question.
00:10:03.000 Oh, we will.
00:10:04.000 Yeah.
00:10:05.000 And in 2019, my word was unstoppable.
00:10:09.000 And what I discovered was, you know, I had limiting beliefs.
00:10:12.000 I had things that I would think on that were sabotaging me from having the success that I wanted.
00:10:17.000 I had relationships that were challenging, that I really wanted to have breakthrough.
00:10:23.000 And unstoppable was a constant reminder that to turn the hardest relationships into the healthiest relationships, to take the negative doom loop that I might have in my head of doubts or discouragement and turn it around into something that overcomes challenges.
00:10:39.000 Physically, what are the roadblocks in my life?
00:10:41.000 So if there's young people out there or old people out there that are struggling, that feel stuck, this is the perfect process to discover that word, lift your head out of your problems, consider the capability of what God might do in your life this year and might do through you, and then create a positive expectation for that life change.
00:11:01.000 You know, hey, what could happen this year that really turns things around, helps me overcome my circumstances, overcome the challenges that I'm facing?
00:11:10.000 Unstoppable was that word in 2019.
00:11:12.000 So do you find that the word you choose is somewhat circumstantial, meaning it's about what's going on around you?
00:11:17.000 And you take a kind of an analysis, you kind of take a review and you say, boy, I have limiting beliefs.
00:11:25.000 Therefore, my word should be unstoppable.
00:11:27.000 So the word should be self-improvement or goal-oriented towards living a better life.
00:11:32.000 And so the word can be motivational.
00:11:34.000 The word can be also a word of accountability, right?
00:11:37.000 So, can you use an example of maybe a word that you used in the last 21 years where the word was able to keep you within the boundaries of either good behavior or doing the right thing?
00:11:48.000 Oh, yeah, absolutely.
00:11:49.000 So, in 2010, so now you're really testing.
00:11:51.000 Now, we're really testing.
00:11:53.000 I love the thesis of the word.
00:11:55.000 And I'll get to a different point of view.
00:11:56.000 And it forms chapters.
00:11:57.000 That's what I want to get to.
00:11:58.000 That's kind of the cool thing.
00:11:59.000 You don't forget the word either five years ago.
00:12:01.000 No, I guess you don't.
00:12:01.000 I'm not sure.
00:12:02.000 So, in 2010, my word was detox.
00:12:05.000 Wow, that's a lot different than unstoppable.
00:12:07.000 Yeah, it is.
00:12:08.000 And those are the precursor.
00:12:09.000 You go from like Superman Übermensch to like...
00:12:12.000 Yeah, to, oh, my gosh, I'm addicted.
00:12:14.000 Yeah, I got to bring addiction.
00:12:15.000 Without getting too personal, why did you choose detox?
00:12:17.000 You know, I discovered at that time that I was making decisions that were, or I was influenced by voices, influenced by other relationships that were toxic, that were not life-giving, that were not helpful to the conversation.
00:12:35.000 And that year became a year where I really distanced myself from some friends that were unproductive, made some different decisions physically regarding my physical health and even spiritually, you know, just making sure to connect to truth, to connect to the things of like whatever's good and right and pure and hopeful and optimistic and full of life.
00:12:58.000 I had to detox from some of that negative spiritual talk and really fill myself with that supernatural power.
00:13:06.000 So it was a year of, you know, I had to explain it a lot.
00:13:08.000 Charlie, I had to explain that.
00:13:10.000 Yeah, like, do you need to go into rehab?
00:13:10.000 Like, are you okay?
00:13:13.000 I mean, what do we need?
00:13:14.000 Now, I didn't have any substance abuse problems, but at the same time, I had thought problems and I had some toxic material that needed to go.
00:13:22.000 And so you found throughout the years that the words almost are able to roll one into the other.
00:13:28.000 But the word actually tells you more about the previous year than the future year.
00:13:28.000 Yeah.
00:13:33.000 It may.
00:13:33.000 And because it might be more of like what I need to do to be able to then perform it.
00:13:38.000 Can you give me an example of some of the words that really stuck out to you?
00:13:43.000 Maybe the first word you ever chose and then how it was able to make a difference in your life?
00:13:47.000 Yeah, that's a great question.
00:13:48.000 And the first year, my word was simplify.
00:13:51.000 And so that was coming on the heels of these huge lists of resolutions, which we were completely unsuccessful with.
00:13:51.000 Okay.
00:13:59.000 So my first word was simplify.
00:14:01.000 And what I learned was I had to be able to say no so that the quality of my yes improved, so that the things that I actually committed to meant something.
00:14:10.000 And so that I could focus on those things and, you know, be better in those areas.
00:14:14.000 So by simplifying, I eliminated a lot of garbage that was probably good, but it was, you know, you've heard this statement, good is the enemy of great.
00:14:22.000 It's true.
00:14:23.000 You know, there's a lot of things that you can be doing and be relatively successful.
00:14:27.000 But when you pair away some of the good things to get to the really good things, the great things, and you simplify, you've got space in order to really stay on mission, I think, more than ever.
00:14:37.000 And so the word doesn't have to be just a noun.
00:14:43.000 It could be a verb, like detox is, you know, to detox.
00:14:46.000 Yes.
00:14:47.000 And so, which obviously didn't, as you mentioned, do a substance, but just something in particular.
00:14:53.000 And with young people in general, have you found that when they find this one word, it keeps them focused?
00:14:58.000 Because these longer meandering journals and resolutions, you can kind of get just lost in the middle of it.
00:15:03.000 Nevertheless, you know, we did a, we rolled this out in school districts all around the country.
00:15:07.000 And one of my favorite stories is of a Midlothian elementary school in Texas, great state of Texas.
00:15:14.000 And we rolled it out and they allowed all of the kids to, when they selected their words, they took the ceiling tiles out of the ceiling.
00:15:20.000 They let the kids paint their word on the ceiling tile and then put them back in the ceiling.
00:15:24.000 So all year long, literally, these kids would have a reminder, a visual reminder of their word for the year.
00:15:31.000 And then the teachers would bring it into the classroom.
00:15:34.000 So, you know, and that's a story of fourth graders, you know, and then we've got high school students who are dealing with some real issues who want to step into a future that's purposeful and meaningful.
00:15:46.000 They know it's in them.
00:15:47.000 It just needs to be called out of them.
00:15:49.000 So by focusing on this word, and it really does, you know, if you put it on your screensaver, you put it on your phone.
00:15:56.000 I make bands.
00:15:57.000 I mean, I've got an unstoppable band on here.
00:16:00.000 Wow.
00:16:00.000 So what's your word this year?
00:16:01.000 This year, my word is freedom.
00:16:03.000 Okay.
00:16:04.000 So that could be a very interesting conversation.
00:16:06.000 Sure.
00:16:07.000 Tell me why you chose freedom.
00:16:09.000 I feel, and you know this more than anybody, given what you do, I feel like our freedom is under attack now more than ever before.
00:16:16.000 No surprise to hear me.
00:16:17.000 Yeah, you're right.
00:16:18.000 Exactly.
00:16:19.000 I thought I'd get an amen on that one.
00:16:21.000 You know, and I feel like, too, not only do am I in the fight politically.
00:16:26.000 I mean, I definitely, I love America.
00:16:29.000 You know, I had an opportunity in the last couple of years to trace our lineage back to the American Revolutionary War, which has been cool.
00:16:36.000 And I know you have an interesting history as well.
00:16:38.000 Yeah, I'm the son of the American Revolution.
00:16:40.000 Yeah, son of, that's what it was.
00:16:42.000 In fact, Jake and I and our other boys just joined that.
00:16:45.000 So that's pretty exciting.
00:16:47.000 And, you know, so I have this built-in patriotism and love for the American idea.
00:16:52.000 I have a love for the American ideals and our principles that we're founded on.
00:16:56.000 And I've never seen them under quite this level of assault.
00:16:59.000 So I think that that was part of the motivation.
00:17:02.000 But I think beyond that, you know, freedom physically, for example, I had back surgery last year.
00:17:07.000 Just add one more thing to 2020, right?
00:17:10.000 And I want to have the freedom, like I used to, to not worry about getting injured physically because I love to be active.
00:17:17.000 I love to compete still.
00:17:19.000 And I think that's been something that is part of my focus is how do I get to the place where I don't worry about being injured, you know, along the way?
00:17:27.000 I have the freedom physically to do the things I love to do.
00:17:30.000 And freedom from sin, it's a great word.
00:17:34.000 You can keep going.
00:17:35.000 Oh, from a spiritual perspective, it's incredible because you think about all the ways that we've been rescued from the bondage.
00:17:42.000 Bondage to sin, bondage.
00:17:43.000 John 8 talks a lot.
00:17:44.000 Oh, yeah.
00:17:45.000 And that's actually my favorite verse.
00:17:46.000 John 8, 36.
00:17:47.000 There we go.
00:17:48.000 Which is whom the sun sets free is free indeed.
00:17:51.000 So there's so many illustrations in the Bible about God's intent for us to live with freedom, and that we've been set free.
00:18:00.000 Don't go back to the legalism of old.
00:18:02.000 Instead, walk in freedom and walk in the power that God has given you.
00:18:06.000 Can you talk about how the new secular orthodoxy defines freedom differently?
00:18:10.000 The way they define freedom is the freedom to put substances in your body without responsibility when in reality, a biblical freedom is a freedom where you have, you're set free of the sin when you're in, no person in sin can actually be free.
00:18:24.000 Can you talk about a biblical definition of freedom versus a secular definition of freedom?
00:18:29.000 Yeah, before placing faith in God or faith in Christ, you know, we really don't have the choice that we think we do.
00:18:35.000 We think we're operating in freedom, you know.
00:18:37.000 But once you place your faith in Christ and you realize that freedom then is freedom to make choices that honor God, you know, it's not freedom to do whatever you want anymore or to indulge your sinful nature, if you will.
00:18:49.000 But instead, you have the freedom and the power within you to overcome that and to make decisions that are good for you, that are a blessing to others and glorify God.
00:18:57.000 And I think that's the name of the game, right?
00:18:59.000 That's why we're set free, so that we can live a righteous life and so that we can make a difference for other people.
00:19:06.000 And many young people are told the opposite.
00:19:08.000 They say the more you will pursue whatever secular, quasi-hedonistic, nihilistic objective, the more you'll find content or satisfaction.
00:19:19.000 And you deal with young people.
00:19:20.000 You could say firsthand that is absolutely not the case.
00:19:23.000 It doesn't work, right?
00:19:24.000 It's empty.
00:19:27.000 And that false freedom, as we call it, false freedom, promises so much.
00:19:31.000 It promises so much satisfaction, and in the end, it's empty.
00:19:36.000 And so you can try and make decisions that you think are going to satisfy you.
00:19:42.000 And if they're not righteous decisions, if they're not decisions that honor God, they're going to be empty.
00:19:47.000 It's going to leave you in a darker place or depressed.
00:19:50.000 And we see that.
00:19:51.000 But then when God gets involved and you have a right perspective on freedom and you place your faith in Christ, all of a sudden you experience real freedom.
00:20:01.000 It's a lightness.
00:20:03.000 I remember when I placed my faith in Christ in college at Virginia Tech, and I remember the burden that I let go of.
00:20:09.000 Yes.
00:20:10.000 You know, that performance burden, trying to please God.
00:20:13.000 And once you realize you're not really living to please God, you're actually, he's done everything for you and you're reconciled to him.
00:20:20.000 You can let go of that performance mindset and really walk in freedom.
00:20:23.000 Yeah.
00:20:24.000 Amen.
00:20:24.000 So 21 words you've done.
00:20:27.000 Which one really sticks out to you as the one that was the most pivotal?
00:20:30.000 Where you were in a moment where you're like, this word really either saved me from something or got me to the next level or was a breakthrough.
00:20:38.000 Can I share my wife's word?
00:20:40.000 And she struggled with cancer, if I'm not mistaken.
00:20:40.000 Yes.
00:20:42.000 Is that right?
00:20:43.000 In 2008, she was diagnosed with four-stage colon cancer.
00:20:47.000 Wow.
00:20:47.000 The same colon cancer that her father had been diagnosed with at the same age years before and died two years later.
00:20:54.000 So we were facing that situation.
00:20:56.000 And I'll never forget.
00:20:57.000 We had great care with physicians at Johns Hopkins in Maryland, a world-class organization.
00:21:03.000 But every time we went in there for a new test or a new update or a report, we got a lot of bad news.
00:21:10.000 We got a lot of bad news for months.
00:21:12.000 And I'll never forget, I remember telling them, hey, when we come in, if I pulled the doctors aside and said, hey, when we come in, could you spend the first two or three minutes giving us some hope?
00:21:20.000 Just breathe some life into this thing.
00:21:23.000 They thought it was crazy, but then they realized the power of belief.
00:21:26.000 And I remember heading into 2009, Eva Lise chose the word believe.
00:21:31.000 And because we were, you know, we were kind of in that place where we had to trust God no matter what.
00:21:37.000 We knew that nothing was impossible for God, that even these long odds that she was facing were not insurmountable.
00:21:44.000 So that word became a rallying cry for us.
00:21:46.000 And it was for nothing is impossible for those who believe.
00:21:50.000 And then out of that now, she's 12 years cancer free now.
00:21:53.000 It is just amazing miracle.
00:21:55.000 And at the same time, she created an organization, a cancer foundation called Believe Big.
00:22:00.000 So the word for the year, the focus for the year was believing that God could do the impossible, trusting him for her healing, which happened.
00:22:09.000 And then out of that, we wanted to turn that adversity into an advantage.
00:22:12.000 You know, that's kind of one of our core principles.
00:22:14.000 How do we take adversity and turn it into an advantage and a blessing for others?
00:22:18.000 So then the organization Believe Big was birthed.
00:22:21.000 And now we've had an opportunity to influence literally thousands of people around the world on their journey to beat cancer.
00:22:27.000 It's amazing.
00:22:28.000 Yeah, it's really cool.
00:22:29.000 So I could just hear right now, a lot of young people are writing down multiple words.
00:22:33.000 They should pray over it and then select one, right?
00:22:35.000 Don't select two.
00:22:36.000 Not two, not two.
00:22:37.000 Do you find this question some light?
00:22:38.000 Can I do three words?
00:22:40.000 Can I do a phrase?
00:22:40.000 Can I do a phrase?
00:22:41.000 Can I do a quote?
00:22:42.000 Tell me why the one word matters though.
00:22:44.000 One word, the more narrow your focus, the better.
00:22:46.000 Tell me why, though.
00:22:47.000 Well, the more likely that you're going to stay on track.
00:22:49.000 And so for me, if you, you know, it's like a laser.
00:22:53.000 You know, light is productive in this room, but if you narrow the focus of that light, we can cut through steel for that.
00:22:58.000 So a lot of times people will say, well, what if I don't like my word?
00:23:02.000 You know, what if what if I get three months?
00:23:04.000 By May, I'm like, discipline, not for me.
00:23:07.000 I've failed already.
00:23:08.000 And we say journey with it for a year.
00:23:10.000 Okay.
00:23:11.000 You know, and the reason is a lot of times we don't know what God is going to do with that word in our lives until late in the game.
00:23:18.000 You know, some things you would expect you would see from a word like discipline or like perseverance.
00:23:23.000 You're going to face opportunities to persevere.
00:23:26.000 But at the same time, you don't know what you might face in July, in October, or like my wife's situation in September of 2008.
00:23:34.000 We didn't know why her word was going to be important that year.
00:23:37.000 So you discover it late in the year, and it's something to be journeyed with.
00:23:40.000 Like, I like it.
00:23:42.000 I want that word to become part of my DNA.
00:23:46.000 So, you know, a word like connect or a word like love or believe or detox.
00:23:51.000 I want that to be something that becomes part of who I am as a person.
00:23:56.000 So by journeying with that for a year, you have memories and milestones.
00:24:00.000 You know, you've got a chapter of your life that you're going to be able to describe the life change that you've experienced.
00:24:06.000 So it's also important that the word is reflective of righteousness.
00:24:10.000 Yes.
00:24:11.000 Do you find sometimes you have to remind people not to have the word maybe point them in a direction that might be against God's will?
00:24:18.000 Sure.
00:24:18.000 For example, if the word you chose is success, well, success can be wonderful for the pursuit of what is righteous in the world.
00:24:25.000 But success for...
00:24:27.000 So can you add some clarity that the intention behind the word must be pursuing truth or pursuing what is right?
00:24:33.000 A lot of times, you know, people will say, well, it seems kind of selfish that I'm focusing on a word that's going to bring life change just for me.
00:24:39.000 And we always say that, you know, the life change that you experience always has to be a blessing to others.
00:24:45.000 So even if I think of the term success, which is a great word, and many people are not even going to be there because we want to be successful, right?
00:24:52.000 But, you know, there's a difference between success and fulfillment.
00:24:52.000 Of course.
00:24:56.000 You know, I can be wildly successful in the pursuit of something, but unless it has greater meaning, unless it has the ability to bless or bring other people up, it's really going to, relatively speaking, be a hollow word.
00:25:08.000 So we always want to begin with the end in mind that the change that comes to me is always meant for the blessing and benefit of others.
00:25:15.000 And I think that's one of the things and one of the reasons why it works so well.
00:25:19.000 And you pray over it and it's hopefully incorporated with biblical values.
00:25:24.000 Because as you say, if it becomes part of your DNA for that one year, then you never know where it might just all of a sudden a moment might come.
00:25:33.000 And that word is very real.
00:25:35.000 It's really important.
00:25:36.000 Yeah, that's right.
00:25:37.000 And so we'll add spiritual verses to it.
00:25:41.000 We'll add verses from the Bible to it.
00:25:43.000 And even now in my journal, so we recommend journaling, put the word in the front, put some verses to it, maybe put a statement to it that can help you remember it throughout the year.
00:25:52.000 But I have nine or 10 verses from the Bible about freedom.
00:25:55.000 And they're all relatively different aspects of freedom that I think can help me along the way.
00:26:02.000 So the book is one word that will change your life.
00:26:05.000 Yes.
00:26:06.000 And it's changed your life.
00:26:07.000 Big time.
00:26:08.000 And I know that Jake has done it and other people have as well.
00:26:12.000 And so your recommendation, everyone should get out, should go check the book.
00:26:14.000 Yes.
00:26:15.000 And they should start finding that word and focusing on that word.
00:26:19.000 Yeah.
00:26:19.000 And don't make it something that's a heavy process.
00:26:21.000 You know, a lot of times people feel like they have to get the perfect word and they'll get stuck because of that.
00:26:26.000 And we're always like, listen, make it a joyful process.
00:26:29.000 Make this a, you know, a process where you have a positive expectation for what's going to happen.
00:26:35.000 You can't go wrong picking any word.
00:26:37.000 If God leads you to a handful of words, you can't go wrong picking one of those words and journey with it for the year.
00:26:43.000 So we send people to our website at getoneword.com, and there's lots of resources there that can help people discover their word as well.
00:26:51.000 And to keep it very narrow and focused in this chaotic world.
00:26:55.000 Anything else about the book that you wanted to dive into that we maybe didn't get a chance to do that?
00:26:59.000 I think that the biggest thing, and I've said it a couple of times here today, is that this lifts your eyes off your circumstances, gets you focused in a positive direction, and you should believe that great things are going to happen.
00:27:12.000 Doesn't mean that adversity is not going to come.
00:27:15.000 We're likely to experience adversity.
00:27:17.000 We're likely to go through challenges.
00:27:19.000 But that word might be just the thing that you need to overcome those challenges.
00:27:23.000 It might be something like a word like peace.
00:27:26.000 It might be a different type of attribute, but expect great things to happen, expect positive life change to happen, and really make a difference for others.
00:27:35.000 And you focus on what is good, yes, that will follow.
00:27:39.000 So it is one word that will change your life.
00:27:42.000 Honor to have you on this program.
00:27:44.000 Thank you.
00:27:44.000 Thank you.
00:27:44.000 The honor is all mine.
00:27:45.000 Thank you.
00:27:46.000 Thanks so much.
00:27:46.000 You bet.
00:27:49.000 Thanks so much for listening, everybody.
