00:03:15.000 Thank you for having me, Charlie.
00:03:17.000 You are in the middle of an NBA season right now.
00:03:19.000 This is not an off-season.
00:03:20.000 You're like in season right now.
00:03:23.000 And you made time to be here with us.
00:03:24.000 First of all, thank you.
00:03:26.000 Yeah.
00:03:26.000 And how did that work logistically?
00:03:29.000 I'm just kind of curious.
00:03:30.000 Well, it worked out perfectly because today's an off day for our team, but it definitely was tough getting in here.
00:03:36.000 We flew out really early this morning and we'll fly out really late tonight.
00:03:40.000 Yeah.
00:03:41.000 So you have an off day.
00:03:43.000 You play for the Orlando Magic.
00:03:44.000 You're flying all the way back to Florida.
00:03:46.000 Yes.
00:03:46.000 Wow.
00:03:47.000 Well, this is obviously a priority for you.
00:03:47.000 Okay.
00:03:49.000 So thank you.
00:03:51.000 And I think one of the reasons we're so thrilled to have you is, and we talked about this on the show previously.
00:03:58.000 And I want to kind of just remind our audience, and you wrote a great book about it.
00:04:01.000 During all the BLM stuff in the bubble, you were the only person not to kneel during the national anthem.
00:04:13.000 That's really powerful, man.
00:04:14.000 Just walk us through that story again.
00:04:16.000 Yeah, so it started obviously with the George Floyd situation and everything that happened.
00:04:16.000 It's great.
00:04:21.000 And then you had this, you know, just meteoric rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and organization.
00:04:27.000 And at the time, when it first happened, I saw the video and my first reaction was anger.
00:04:34.000 And I thought to myself, what was the way to think about this or to see this in the right light?
00:04:39.000 And I started to think about it.
00:04:41.000 And then, you know, riots started to cap off.
00:04:43.000 Everything started to happen.
00:04:44.000 And I remember I was in church.
00:04:46.000 This is my pastor here, my wife here.
00:04:49.000 And my pastor was preaching a sermon.
00:04:51.000 And it was about Jesus being captured by the Roman Guard at the height of the height of the BLM riots.
00:04:56.000 And Peter lunges forward and cuts off the guy's ear.
00:04:59.000 And Jesus says, if you live by the sword, you'll die by the sword.
00:05:01.000 And one of the things that my pastor said was, if we continue to act in the same way that we've acted in the past in terms of white and black relations, then we'll get the same result.
00:05:11.000 And so if we could step into this moment with love, there could be a real change.
00:05:16.000 And we could lead that change.
00:05:18.000 And so, you know, I had it in my head, okay, if there was an opportunity to speak, that's what I would lead with.
00:05:23.000 And so we get to the bubble and our team is playing.
00:05:26.000 And we're set to play the next day.
00:05:30.000 And the team, a team before us knelt the day before.
00:05:32.000 They knelt for the national anthem.
00:05:33.000 And so it created this big craze and buzz in the bubble.
00:05:37.000 And my team put on this team meeting and we had the team officials and everybody there.
00:05:42.000 And it turned into a players-only meeting.
00:05:44.000 And they just said, hey, you guys decide what you want to do.
00:05:47.000 And it turned into a players-only meeting.
00:05:49.000 And the team was just like, hey, we don't have a choice.
00:05:51.000 You know, this is what we're going to do.
00:05:52.000 Everybody's going to kneel and we'll just get this over with.
00:05:55.000 And one of my teammates turned towards me and said, well, what are you going to do, Jonathan?
00:05:59.000 And I said, fellas, I'm not going to kneel and I'm not going to wear the t-shirt.
00:06:02.000 Wow.
00:06:02.000 And that broke out chaos.
00:06:05.000 And, you know, we had some exchange of words and a rowdy conversation.
00:06:10.000 And it led to the next day.
00:06:12.000 I was on the phone with my pastor that night and I was telling him, like, you know, I don't think you understand what this is going to be.
00:06:17.000 You know, I'm going to be a, I'm going to be a sellout.
00:06:19.000 I'm going to be a, you know, all the names in the book, who and all that stuff.
00:06:23.000 And he said to me, you cannot stand for God and God not stand for you.
00:06:27.000 That is really great.
00:06:30.000 And that was, that, that was the moment that the next, the next morning I stood.
00:06:35.000 And you wrote all about it, why I stand.
00:06:37.000 And did you ever, was there, walk us through 10 minutes before?
00:06:42.000 Because I would imagine the way that basketball warm-ups work.
00:06:46.000 I played high school basketball, not quite national basketball associate.
00:06:49.000 But, you know, it's like 10 minutes on the clock.
00:06:51.000 Maybe I'm wrong, but you're kind of like, boy, I'm 10 minutes out from the national anthem.
00:06:55.000 It's probably the most thought about national anthem in the history of your career, right?
00:07:00.000 I was terrified.
00:07:01.000 I was legitimately terrified.
00:07:03.000 I'm going through the warm-ups.
00:07:05.000 I'm the only player without a t-shirt on.
00:07:07.000 And so I just have my jersey on.
00:07:08.000 The other team is looking at me.
00:07:09.000 The refs are looking at me like, what's going on?
00:07:11.000 Like something's done, something's happening here.
00:07:13.000 And I just remember just thinking in my mind and even leading up to standing in the line, just praying under my breath, just saying, like, God, you know, let this truly be about you.
00:07:22.000 And I know I'm afraid.
00:07:24.000 I know I'm terrified, but you got me.
00:07:26.000 And I kept reciting also what my pastor said that, you know, I can't stand for God and God not stand for me.
00:07:30.000 And it just, it just happened.
00:07:32.000 It felt like it took forever.
00:07:33.000 But then once it was over, it was just like, okay, like, you know, we're playing basketball now.
00:07:36.000 And we played a great game and won.
00:07:37.000 And then as soon as the game was over with, you know, I got the meeting and everything.
00:07:40.000 I was like, oh, snap, that actually happened.
00:07:41.000 It's real now.
00:07:43.000 So I kind of forgot about it.
00:07:44.000 So it was a lagging effect, right?
00:07:46.000 Because there were no fans.
00:07:47.000 The media is all up, whatever.
00:07:47.000 Right, exactly.
00:07:49.000 You know, everyone's distanced, right?
00:07:50.000 Because during COVID.
00:07:52.000 So you play the game and then no one wants to talk about the game.
00:07:54.000 Exactly.
00:07:55.000 Right?
00:07:55.000 They want to talk about why on earth were you not doing the thing.
00:07:58.000 Right.
00:07:59.000 And so five minutes left on the clock before the national anthem, three minutes.
00:08:03.000 Was there a time where you, second guessed, were you almost double-clutched?
00:08:07.000 No.
00:08:08.000 From the night before, I knew what I was going to do.
00:08:10.000 But definitely the angst and the nerves were there all the way throughout.
00:08:13.000 You were more nervous about the national anthem than the game.
00:08:15.000 Fair?
00:08:16.000 Yes.
00:08:18.000 But that's, you think about it, right?
00:08:20.000 I mean, instead of playing with millions of people, what you were going to do was going to send a culture.
00:08:25.000 How did your teammates then react to you in the days and weeks that followed?
00:08:29.000 So I wrote about this in the book.
00:08:32.000 We had an impromptu players-only meeting.
00:08:34.000 I got called.
00:08:35.000 And so, and for me, I understood how sensitive the time was.
00:08:42.000 Like, you know, I wasn't trying, I was trying my best to go about it humbly and to just speak what I feel and not, you know, not trying to force anything on anybody.
00:08:51.000 So I understood my teammates' frustration.
00:08:54.000 One, because there were a couple guys that were very involved in the movement, like going to the protests, going to the marches, everything like that.
00:09:00.000 And so we had practice the next day after the game and we're headed back to the hotel.
00:09:04.000 And I get a text to my phone, players-only meeting when we get back.
00:09:08.000 And I'm getting off the bus, and one of my teammates, you know, nudges me, hey, just a heads up, this meeting is about you.
00:09:13.000 And so you didn't know before.
00:09:14.000 I didn't know before.
00:09:15.000 So we get into the meeting, and it's what you would expect.
00:09:18.000 You know, guys are, you know, livid.
00:09:21.000 You know, one of, you know, one of my teammates are like, yo, like, I'm not, I'm going to stay in the locker room.
00:09:25.000 Like, I'm not kneeling next to you standing.
00:09:27.000 And it turned into, like, I'm not protesting you guys.
00:09:31.000 Like, I'm not like my decision and standing has nothing to do with going against what you guys are doing.
00:09:37.000 And, you know, I had some teammates that were like, yo, we know Jonathan.
00:09:41.000 Like, we know this is who he is.
00:09:42.000 We know this is what he believes.
00:09:43.000 Like, just let it ride.
00:09:44.000 And so, you know, after a lot of time, they were asking, look, are you going to stand again?
00:09:50.000 That was the ending question of the meeting.
00:09:53.000 And I said, yes.
00:09:55.000 And they were just like, okay, well, everybody, just do what you want to do.
00:09:58.000 It is what it is.
00:10:00.000 And I remember talking to my pastor again after that meeting, and he said to me, this is a rolling theme.
00:10:06.000 But he said to me, you respected their decision to kneel and they should respect your decision to stand and return.
00:10:12.000 And we were able to leave.
00:10:13.000 Amen.
00:10:15.000 So in that struggle session, were there any teammates that stood up for you or that you, or was it just kind of one on 15?
00:10:25.000 Yeah, no, there were a few in terms of, you know, they knew my character, you know, throughout the year in terms of, you know, they had enough respect to be like, okay, we know that Jonathan isn't in this to be malicious.
00:10:38.000 He's just trying to be who he is.
00:10:39.000 And they knew me to be, you know, Christian on the team.
00:10:42.000 And so there were a few guys that were like, you know, this is a little overboard and we should just let him be who he is and we'll be who we are.
00:10:49.000 And so, you know.
00:10:51.000 So let's talk about your faith.
00:10:53.000 You have a beautiful shirt on.
00:10:54.000 It says Judah.
00:10:56.000 And the faith, your faith is obviously super important to you and instructs every decision that you make.
00:11:01.000 And, you know, being in the National Basketball Association, I can imagine it is, I don't want to say difficult, but it's unusual to be a dedicated Christian.
00:11:12.000 Difficult.
00:11:13.000 Okay, tell me why it's difficult.
00:11:14.000 Well, it's just, it's just the world we live in at the end of the day.
00:11:18.000 You know, at all, at all points being, you know, having access to excess is the way I like to, is the way I like to describe it.
00:11:26.000 It is difficult.
00:11:27.000 And for me, I know that I wouldn't be one sitting next to you or, you know, in the position that I am today if it wasn't for the people around me and not just me.
00:11:36.000 If it was just me on my own, you know, who are those people?
00:11:39.000 Your pastor, your wife.
00:11:41.000 My wife, my personal family, my mom, my brothers and sisters, but also my church family as well that continue to pray for me and cover me and work my tables when I come to these different places.
00:11:52.000 They're doing a great job, by the way.
00:11:54.000 They do.
00:11:55.000 So, I got a lot of great people around me that keep me encouraged and keep me on the right path.
00:12:02.000 Are you tired of progressive companies and exhausted trying to keep up with all the virtue signaling when you're simply just trying to buy products?
00:12:10.000 Progressive Corporate America continues to push messaging that further alienates conservative Americans, all while eroding the future of the American dream.
00:12:19.000 It's prominent all over the country.
00:12:21.000 Retailers like Target are selling chest binders and tuck-friendly bathing suits.
00:12:26.000 It's disgusting.
00:12:27.000 Starbucks is strong-arming their customers to support abortion.
00:12:30.000 The Starbucks Workers Union is on the side of Hamas.
00:12:35.000 Financial services like PayPal are canceling customers for their political views.
00:12:39.000 Thankfully, we don't have to fund these companies any longer with Public Square.
00:12:42.000 We have a solution.
00:12:43.000 Founded by Michael Seifert, an amazing company.
00:12:46.000 I think so highly of them.
00:12:47.000 We do a lot of work together.

00:13:20.000 That's publicsq.m-O-B-I forward slash Charlie Kirk.
00:13:24.000 Check it out today.
00:13:28.000 So, yeah, I mean, I love that you have excess in the NBA, right?
00:13:31.000 Everywhere you turn, it's there's a lot of attention, right?
00:13:35.000 There's a lot of temptation.
00:13:37.000 How, how do you navigate?
00:13:39.000 What do you have to share to the audience of how you navigate that?
00:13:42.000 Because it's almost every single day the flesh or the institution of the NBA is almost at odds with how you know you're supposed to live as a Christian.
00:13:53.000 Yeah, I say, I just, you know, trying your best to keep your head down as much as you can.
00:13:59.000 You know, I don't necessarily participate in a lot of extracurricular activities in terms of, you know, if we're going to a city or anything like that.
00:14:05.000 So I just, I just, you know, try my best to lay low.
00:14:08.000 And again, you know, keeping the well, this is important, though, because some people say, but let's just say, take one of our college kids, but I can't coexist on a team if I don't do the extracurricular.
00:14:20.000 I know you're being nice, extracurricular activities.
00:14:23.000 How do you do that?
00:14:24.000 How do you be a great teammate, excel at an elite level?
00:14:28.000 You're averaging like almost 10 points a game right now.
00:14:30.000 And then also stay true to yourself.
00:14:33.000 I would imagine is you have to win the respect of the people around you.
00:14:37.000 Is that right?
00:14:38.000 And they see it.
00:14:38.000 Right.
00:14:40.000 And so I think respect is a lot of times, especially with my teammates and stuff, they know me for some of the stuff that I won't do.
00:14:48.000 And they have respect for me in that regard.
00:14:51.000 Or I'll tell you a quick story.
00:14:53.000 I like to tell this story because I think it just exemplifies what we're talking about.
00:14:56.000 But I was at a teammate's house and we were playing a game.
00:15:00.000 And the game was, you know, you pick a card and the card may say, who this, who, that.
00:15:06.000 And you had to pick each person in the room.
00:15:08.000 And the card rose, who has the best life?
00:15:13.000 Who has the best life?
00:15:14.000 And, you know, everybody went quiet.
00:15:16.000 And one of my teammates goes, you know what?
00:15:19.000 I think Jonathan has the best life.
00:15:21.000 And there wasn't, you know, a contest.
00:15:23.000 And so like things like that, like they know me by who I am.
00:15:27.000 I'm the guy that'll check on you when you're injured.
00:15:29.000 I'm the guy that'll try to come over to your place, even though you probably don't want me to when you're injured or something like that.
00:15:34.000 And so I try my best to be there for them and to just be who I am, you know, in ups and downs and try to be consistent.
00:15:41.000 And I think it does.
00:15:43.000 It has grown a respect level.
00:15:45.000 One of my favorite verses is Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the way of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
00:15:51.000 You're definitely not conforming despite being in the institution.
00:15:56.000 Talk about how Christ has been working on you since you got into the NBA.
00:16:00.000 Oh, man.
00:16:03.000 Every day in more ways than one.
00:16:06.000 I'm so far from perfect.
00:16:08.000 And again, I've been hit with so many things from injuries, setbacks, things that you're believing God for, and you have these setbacks.
00:16:16.000 And it's difficult times when I want to run away and just... continue not to stay on the right path even.
00:16:24.000 And again, I got to give all credit to the people around me that hit you over the head and help you to stay right and are strong for you when you're not strong.
00:16:32.000 And so it has been a continued battle.
00:16:35.000 We're just walking in God's purpose.
00:16:37.000 And as I've continued to, I've been able to see that it gets bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and on a bigger stage than the next time I turn around.
00:16:45.000 And so just trying my best to stay faithful.
00:16:49.000 What story or verse in the last year, year and a half has really moved you or popped out to you?
00:16:56.000 I think it's Job.
00:16:58.000 I think it's Job.
00:16:59.000 Are you living a Job life right now?
00:17:00.000 I think, well, I think I'm on the, in Jesus' name, I'm on the ladder side.
00:17:04.000 Okay, so you're on the back end of Job.
00:17:06.000 The back end of Job.
00:17:07.000 Well, that's good.
00:17:08.000 The beginning is kind of brutal.
00:17:09.000 But yeah, like, you know, like I said, I've been through my fair share of injuries and setbacks and things like that.
00:17:14.000 And just that verse from Job saying, shall we accept, you know, good from God and not bad?
00:17:20.000 And just a reflection of who God is.
00:17:23.000 Like, you know, I've learned so much about, you know, God, not just being a God of the hills, but a God of the valleys as well, and getting to know him in that space.
00:17:30.000 And so, yeah, I say Job.
00:17:33.000 Yeah, Job is the oldest book in the Bible.
00:17:37.000 It was written even before the Torah.
00:17:38.000 Really?
00:17:39.000 I didn't know.
00:17:39.000 Yeah.
00:17:40.000 It was the first book ever written.
00:17:42.000 And it's probably one of the most difficult.
00:17:44.000 I think it would be if some people wish it wasn't there because it basically says that your suffering has meaning.
00:17:50.000 And it's a very, very, very, very, it's infinitely challenging.
00:17:54.000 So you, you know, we as Christians are always trying to grow and trying to develop in the faith, including bringing other people to the Lord.
00:18:03.000 How do you mix evangelism in you and what you do?
00:18:08.000 Yeah, in terms of being a basketball player, both your teammates, but also, obviously, you do a beautiful job to the millions of people that follow you.
00:18:15.000 I would say on the outside of what's not basketball, it's just, you know, trying my best to use my platform.
00:18:20.000 And so the book for me is such an amazing tool.
00:18:25.000 One, because, you know, most people see it as this, you know, this courageous moment of standing, but it really is so much more than that.
00:18:31.000 It really is a story of God ordering the footsteps of this young man who struggled in so many different ways from anxiety, self-insecurity, and using the people in his life to mold him into a man and a better version.
00:18:46.000 And so it speaks to the transformation power of a relationship with Christ.
00:18:50.000 And so I, you know, use my platform, use the book, use, you know, speaking engagements and stuff to evangelize.
00:18:55.000 And I think when it comes to basketball, it's just trying my best to be a light and loving guys where they're at and letting them know that you're there for them no matter what.
00:19:04.000 And when that moment does come of, you know, life getting the better of them, which gets the better of all of us, they'll know who and when to turn.
00:19:14.000 Hey, everybody, Charlie Kirk here.
00:19:15.000 Brand new year and a new year's resolution are here.
00:19:18.000 And I have one you should make.

00:19:22.000 Save babies by providing ultrasounds and be a hero for life this year starting today.
00:19:28.000 Together during the Sanctity of Human Life Month, we're going to save 35,000 babies to show the world that even if our government and our laws don't respect the unborn, we do.
00:19:39.000 Your gift of pre-born will give a girl the truth about what's happening in her body so that she can make the right choice.
00:19:44.000 What better way to start this new year than to join us saving babies?
00:19:48.000 And $28 a month will save a baby a month all year long.
00:19:51.000 A $15,000 gift, some of you out there might be able to do this, will provide a complete ultrasound machine that will save thousands of babies for years and years to come.
00:20:02.000 It will also save moms from a lifetime of pain and regret.

00:20:36.000 You mentioned this on our conversation last time, but I think it bears repeating.
00:20:40.000 You were privately on anxiety medication when you were at Florida State University.
00:20:45.000 Is that right?
00:20:46.000 Yeah, I was the number one player in the state of Florida.
00:20:50.000 I was struggling from the time I was a kid.
00:20:53.000 My parents split up when I was 10.
00:20:54.000 I went from a predominantly black community to a white community from Bronx, New York to Naples, Florida.
00:20:58.000 Oh, yeah.
00:20:59.000 Collier County.
00:21:00.000 Collier County.
00:21:01.000 And I struggled.
00:21:02.000 I struggled with making friends and fitting in.
00:21:04.000 And basketball was the thing that kind of opened those doors.
00:21:06.000 Did you go to IMG?
00:21:08.000 I did.
00:21:08.000 I went to IMG for my fifth year of high school.
00:21:11.000 And so, so yeah, so basketball started to get me everything that I thought I wanted, but it came with this anxiety of if I played really well, everybody loved me.
00:21:19.000 And if I didn't, I would lose everything that I thought.
00:21:21.000 So your purpose was anchored into basketball.
00:21:23.000 My identity was.
00:21:24.000 Your identity.
00:21:26.000 And so getting to Florida State, it just heightened the odds, right?
00:21:30.000 So now I'm big man on campus.
00:21:32.000 Everybody's like, yo, you're going to be the guy that's going to lead us to the national championship and tournament and all that stuff.
00:21:37.000 And I was so up and down all the time of, oh, really good game.
00:21:41.000 Next game's going to be bad.
00:21:42.000 I'm going to mess up.
00:21:44.000 And so it got to a point where I was having like anxiety attacks and like pass out episodes to where I had to go on some anxiety medication just to practice and play.
00:21:54.000 But again, it was unbeknownst to my family, unbeknownst to myself.
00:21:57.000 How did you overcome that?
00:22:00.000 Towards the end of the season, it got pretty apparent that I was going to be an NBA player.
00:22:05.000 And so some of that anxiety started to tail off.
00:22:08.000 I played one year in college.
00:22:08.000 Did you play one year in college?
00:22:10.000 Then I got drafted.
00:22:11.000 But in terms of it being the large-scale movement of overcoming it, and it's still a process even today.
00:22:19.000 I think it's a process for all of us.
00:22:21.000 But I talk about my pastor again, like having somebody to speak into my life to teach me about, one, speaking back to the lies of the enemy and the unconditional true love of God.
00:22:31.000 So when I talk about playing for the love of people, you know, learning about the love of God that loves us in spite of making a shot, in spite of missing a shot, something that I'm still continuing to learn today.
00:22:43.000 But yeah, the learning about the true love of God for, you know, that is for us.
00:22:48.000 He knows that the hairs on our head, all the things like that.
00:22:50.000 And then transferring my identity from basketball to my identity in Christ has been the agent that has gotten me to where I am.
00:22:59.000 It was the agent that allowed me to be bold enough to stand.
00:23:02.000 Talk about what you mentioned there, rejecting the lies of the enemy, because I'm sure the enemy comes after you, comes after all of us.
00:23:09.000 Yeah, absolutely.
00:23:10.000 Like take the, you know, take, you know, standing in the standing in the boat or take COVID even for that matter, just the lies of, you know, you're going to lose your career, or if you do this, you know, this thing is going to happen.
00:23:21.000 You're going to get hurt again, all these different things, or you're no good, you're worthless.
00:23:26.000 All these different things are things that I had to continue to every day, like speak against, use the word of God to speak against.
00:23:32.000 The Bible says that we're more than conquerors, that the righteous are as bold as lions, using things like that to say, you know what, I'm not going to, even though I do have something in front of me that is terrifying, I'm not going to succumb to it.
00:23:44.000 And I'm going to choose courage and boldness to stand because my stance is needed.
00:23:49.000 And I can't remember.
00:23:51.000 You said you were raised Christian.
00:23:52.000 Is that right?
00:23:53.000 But your faith became more and more important to you as you grew older.
00:23:57.000 I wouldn't even say more and more important to me.
00:23:59.000 It was, you know, when I was a kid, it was something that was just traditional.
00:24:02.000 You know, my parents were great.
00:24:04.000 You know, we were in church all the time.
00:24:05.000 My dad was having us memorize psalms and recite them in church, all that stuff.
00:24:09.000 But it was always something that was just kind of in my back pocket.
00:24:11.000 And it ebbed and flowed of, oh, you know what?
00:24:13.000 I'm going to take this really, really seriously.
00:24:15.000 And then once things started to get good, it's like, okay, I'm good now.
00:24:19.000 And so, but it wasn't until I actually got to the NBA to where I had a real encounter and moment of saying, you know what, I want Jesus to be Lord and Savior of my life.
00:24:28.000 And I understood what that meant again to the leading and the teaching of my pastor.
00:24:32.000 And so it's all in the book as well.
00:24:35.000 So I'm just curious, kind of, as growing up, when did you consciously realize that you were better at basketball than just like a normal person?
00:24:48.000 I would say probably middle school.
00:24:50.000 Like when I made that switch from Bronx, New York to Naples, Florida.
00:24:55.000 Yeah, Naples doesn't have the same basketball team.
00:24:58.000 I really didn't play that much.
00:24:59.000 I got on my first basketball team.
00:25:00.000 I wrote about this in the book as well.
00:25:01.000 I went on my first basketball team and I was so bad.
00:25:05.000 Were you tall?
00:25:06.000 I was tall.
00:25:06.000 So they just threw me at center.
00:25:08.000 You were probably like 6'6 in fourth grade or something?
00:25:10.000 Something like that.
00:25:11.000 And I remember we were playing a game and I messed up the game and I lost it for us and they just stopped picking me up for practice.
00:25:19.000 But then I got on another team.
00:25:21.000 This is in Naples.
00:25:21.000 This is in Naples.
00:25:22.000 I got on another team and the coach really started to work with me.
00:25:25.000 And then I started to be like, oh my gosh, I can actually be good.
00:25:28.000 And, you know, it was probably more so my peers that were the ones that were realizing it before me.
00:25:35.000 And you had a passion and a skill both together.
00:25:40.000 And as you've grown in it, so I'm just, I'm kind of just like a geek with some of this stuff.
00:25:47.000 What does how much training do you have to get to stay at an elite level?
00:25:52.000 What does your training regimen look like, both in season and off-season?
00:25:56.000 For the both, it's every day.
00:25:58.000 Something every day that gears towards you being better.
00:26:02.000 So it may not be a rigorous workout each day, but your treatment is something that goes into you becoming a better player.
00:26:10.000 And so there's something every day that rolls into performing at your best.
00:26:16.000 How many years have you been in the national basketball system?
00:26:18.000 Seven.
00:26:18.000 You've been for seven years.
00:26:21.000 And walk us through from a training perspective.
00:26:26.000 Have you changed positions?
00:26:28.000 Have you stayed the same type of player?
00:26:29.000 Have you tried to extend the range of your game?
00:26:31.000 Yeah, I've stayed pretty much the same player.
00:26:33.000 Most people know me for my defense.
00:26:36.000 Is that what you want to be known for?
00:26:38.000 No, I mean, I want to be known for both sides of the floor.
00:26:40.000 And that's continuing to grow.
00:26:42.000 But most people, you know, I think I have the highest defensive percentage in the NBA right now.
00:26:46.000 Really?
00:26:47.000 Yeah.
00:26:47.000 Well, blocks, rebounds, steals.
00:26:50.000 And, well, congratulations.
00:26:52.000 And so, and the no, I'm just asking because to perform at an elite and excellent level, there's constant competition, right?
00:26:52.000 Appreciate it.
00:27:02.000 And so you've been in for seven years.
00:27:03.000 They're constantly drafting new players.
00:27:05.000 They're constantly new blood.
00:27:07.000 And so you're doing something.
00:27:08.000 Talk about the injuries, though.
00:27:09.000 You've been through a fair amount of injuries, right?
00:27:11.000 Yeah, it's been real.
00:27:12.000 Like, I've had like, I've had major injuries.
00:27:14.000 No, one from, you know, it actually happened in the bubble.
00:27:17.000 And that was a whole thing.
00:27:18.000 What was it?
00:27:19.000 It tore my ACL.
00:27:20.000 And so that was a whole thing in and of itself.
00:27:22.000 That's 18 months, right?
00:27:23.000 Yeah, it was, it was, well, it took more than that.
00:27:25.000 It took a, it took really two years for me to get back because I tore my ACL and during my recovery, I tore my hamstring on my right side.
00:27:33.000 And so I've had my fair share.
00:27:34.000 Like I talk about a fair share of setbacks that really tried my faith.
00:27:38.000 And I'm glad that I'm still standing.
00:27:43.000 Are you ready to lose weight but not sure where to start?
00:27:45.000 Look, I understand.
00:27:46.000 And I was right where you are two years ago.
00:27:49.000 Let me tell you why I chose PhD weight loss and nutrition.
00:27:53.000 I highly recommend this program.
00:27:55.000 It started with a Zoom call with Dr. Ashley Lucas, and we had an amazing call, and I asked her all the tough questions.
00:28:00.000 She has a PhD in chronic disease and sports nutrition.
00:28:04.000 Her program is based on years of research and is science-based.
00:28:08.000 And secondly, the PhD program starts with nutrition, but it's so much more.
00:28:12.000 They know that 90% of permanent change comes from the mind, and they work on eliminating the reason you gained this weight in the first place.
00:28:19.000 This works.
00:28:20.000 And if you want to make a New Year's resolution to lose weight, this is the solution for you.
00:28:26.000 You get your own coach, they send you a lot of the food.
00:28:29.000 And look, there are no shortcuts.
00:28:31.000 There's no pills.
00:28:31.000 There's no injections.
00:28:33.000 There's no Ozembic or any of that nonsense.
00:28:35.000 Just solid science-based nutrition and behavior change, and it works.
00:28:40.000 And finally, and probably most importantly, I lost well over 30 pounds.
00:28:44.000 You can go look at old videos of me.
00:28:45.000 I was much heavier than I am now.
00:28:47.000 And I feel better.
00:28:48.000 I wake up with more spirit, more energy, more mental clarity, and I haven't gained a pound back.
00:28:52.000 In fact, I've been able to maintain it.
00:28:54.000 It's a complete and total lifestyle change.
00:28:58.000 It's because my PhD weight loss and nutrition has a lifelong maintenance plan.
00:29:04.000 If you are ready to lose weight for the last time, call 864-644-1900 to get started.
00:29:11.000 Or you can go online at myphdweightloss.com.
00:29:13.000 Dr. Ashley Lucas, she has something really special going on here.
00:29:17.000 I can personally endorse it.
00:29:19.000 I could tell you, and by the way, it's not just the weight loss.
00:29:21.000 My blood work, and if you guys haven't done your blood work, you should.
00:29:25.000 All the markers improved, everything.
00:29:27.000 Hormones, energy.
00:29:29.000 It's amazing across the board.
00:29:31.000 And so it's a shot of vitality.
00:29:33.000 And if you're overweight, you're like most Americans.
00:29:36.000 Well, decide to do something about it.
00:29:38.000 Not trying to shame you or make you feel bad, but if you want to improve your life, a good way to start is to lose some weight.
00:29:45.000 So go to myphdweightloss.com and do what hundreds of my listeners have done and call them today.
00:29:53.000 It's 864-644-1900.
00:29:57.000 I have benefited from this.
00:29:58.000 No BS, no spin.
00:30:00.000 I vetted them.
00:30:01.000 I did the program.
00:30:02.000 I lost 30 pounds and it has benefited my life.
00:30:05.000 In fact, this last year, the numbers are just amazing.
00:30:07.000 If you look at what we've been able to do, it's largely because I lost weight.
00:30:10.000 295 days of radio, 1,200 plus hours of radio, 550 plus speeches and interviews, 230 days on the road, and well over 400 people on staff at Turning Point USA and Turning Point Action.
00:30:22.000 And I wouldn't have been able to do it if I did not have the energy, the spirit, the mental clarity that I got from my PhD weight loss.
00:30:28.000 So check it out right now, myphdweightloss.com.
00:30:32.000 You say, boy, I want to lose weight.
00:30:33.000 Well, turn your wants into musts and go to myphdweightloss.com, myphdweightloss.com.
00:30:43.000 So we're kind of working through that and now being where you are, are you thankful to God for the injuries?
00:30:51.000 Yes.
00:30:52.000 I say, yeah.
00:30:54.000 I'd say, again, like one of the things that I hold on to is like, you don't know God to be faithful until you need him to be.
00:31:02.000 You don't know that God is a truly loving father until you need a loving father.
00:31:07.000 And so, like, you learn more about God the more trials and tribulations you go through.
00:31:10.000 You learn that he really is there.
00:31:12.000 He really is a faithful God.
00:31:14.000 And so if somebody has never needed God to be faithful in their lives, when they do go through something, they won't know him to be faithful.
00:31:25.000 And so, so, yeah.
00:31:27.000 So, and just to see all the blessings that have come out of, you know, it hasn't been all humdrum.
00:31:31.000 It's been amazing, like, to be able to write a book that became a national best.
00:31:35.000 You know, after I stood, my jersey sold second highest in the NBA underneath LeBron.
00:31:41.000 Really, right?
00:31:43.000 So, um, there's, I got married.
00:31:45.000 I have a daughter now.
00:31:46.000 Like, it's, it's been an amazing God, God has been more than talk about that.
00:31:51.000 Just be getting married, having a kid.
00:31:53.000 I think our daughters are almost the same age.
00:31:55.000 But you said it was a year or two?
00:31:56.000 Seven months.
00:31:57.000 Yeah, a year and three months.
00:31:58.000 So, she's walking.
00:32:00.000 Like, my baby girl is like walking around, like, taking her little steps.
00:32:02.000 She's going to be tall, I bet.
00:32:03.000 She is, yeah, for sure.
00:32:05.000 But it's been a blessing.
00:32:07.000 It's just been awesome to watch her grow.
00:32:08.000 How has that changed you?
00:32:11.000 I think it's added a layer of really just, I'm like, God, like, how the heck am I going to do this?
00:32:18.000 And so, but at the same time, added a layer of just like trust.
00:32:20.000 Like, you know, I don't know all the right things to do, but like, again, God is faithful and it's all going to work out.
00:32:25.000 And I'm just, I just want to relish in the love that's there.
00:32:30.000 Tell us about Unitas.
00:32:32.000 Thank you, man.
00:32:32.000 Oh, yeah.
00:32:34.000 Unitas is a values-based sports and apparel company that I started.
00:32:39.000 And for me, the idea behind it is creating a community and ecosystem for people who don't look like each other but share the same values to be able to come together around, you know, stylist, really cool merch, but again, standing for the values that we all hold to.
00:32:55.000 And so, you know, it's not easy to be here.
00:32:59.000 And you talked about at the beginning about one, it being an NBA season, but the fact of the matter of who I am, right?
00:33:04.000 I'm an NBA basketball player.
00:33:06.000 I'm an African-American.
00:33:08.000 It's not easy to stand in this way to, you know, come here.
00:33:12.000 I'm going to catch my fair share of flak and attack and whatnot.
00:33:16.000 I hope you enjoyed it.
00:33:16.000 We have your back.
00:33:17.000 I appreciate you.
00:33:18.000 But I say that because I still feel like it's, I feel like it's necessary for one, for me to be seen.
00:33:24.000 One, because I share in the same values as understanding the necessity and value of Christ and traditional values and principles that have made this country what it is and continue to want to see it prosper.
00:33:40.000 But I also understand that there are tons of people that look like me who may share the same values, but don't have either someone to look to or feel as comfortable entering the movement.
00:33:52.000 And so Unitas for me is a way to say, hey, there's an opportunity for us to all come together no matter what you look like, no matter what your background is.
00:33:59.000 Neither slave nor Greek nor Drew, we're all one in Christ Jesus.
00:34:02.000 We're all one.
00:34:03.000 And we can all come together around this brand.
00:34:05.000 And even, again, being here today is that same thing of saying, hey, there are people that look like me that if they have the opportunity to see something like this, then they want to be a part as well.
00:34:15.000 And kind of bring some people along with me.
00:34:17.000 And so, yeah, so Unitas is that.
00:34:20.000 And I'm so happy about it.
00:34:22.000 We released the Judah One, which is my signature personal shoe as a basketball player.
00:34:27.000 And it's the first signature NBA sneaker with a visible Bible.
00:34:30.000 Let's make it better selling than Air Jordan, guys.
00:34:34.000 Now, that's a tall order, but we're not impossible.
00:34:38.000 So why did you pick Judah?
00:34:39.000 Judah's my middle name.
00:34:40.000 Oh, no way.
00:34:41.000 Judah's my middle name.
00:34:42.000 And so Jonathan, Judah, Isaac.
00:34:44.000 And what's so funny is I never really understood it.
00:34:46.000 You have a very, very biblical name.
00:34:48.000 Yeah.
00:34:48.000 You know, his last name means laughter.
00:34:51.000 So Isaac means laughter.
00:34:53.000 So yeah, I never really understood that.
00:34:55.000 You embodied that very well in a good way.
00:34:56.000 Yeah.
00:34:57.000 My dad is Jacob.
00:34:57.000 Never understood.
00:34:58.000 I'm his fourth son.
00:34:59.000 Oh, which means usurper or heel, right?
00:35:01.000 Redeemer is what Jacob means.
00:35:03.000 So I'm his four sons.
00:35:04.000 So Judah is Jacob's fourth son in the Bible.
00:35:06.000 And he gave me the middle name.
00:35:08.000 And now that I've understood it, I've gravitated towards it more and held on to it.
00:35:13.000 So using the Judah for the Judah One, I think it just fit perfectly.
00:35:17.000 And so you have a Unitas booth here?
00:35:19.000 Right?
00:35:19.000 Yes.
00:35:20.000 And people can go and buy the merch.
00:35:21.000 Is that right?
00:35:22.000 By the merch.
00:35:23.000 They get a discount if they use the code out there.
00:35:26.000 You can buy the Judah One and also have some YI standbooks out there as well.
00:35:30.000 So I want to ask you about how Unitas can be part of the solution.
00:35:35.000 There is a fair amount at times of obsession about sneakerhead culture.
00:35:42.000 Is that fair to say?
00:35:44.000 How do you think Unitis can go about solving some of the, I mean, I see videos at times people go into fights over getting shoes.
00:35:53.000 Is that fair to say?
00:35:55.000 There's an obsession, we would say.
00:35:57.000 Yeah, I don't know if we're going to be able to solve that because that's just the world at the end of the day.
00:36:05.000 But I think we can have a godly obsession for that.
00:36:09.000 So, yeah, I'm excited to see where it goes.
00:36:12.000 We're working on really like expanding it and growing and working on new stuff now that I'm really excited about.
00:36:18.000 But again, just the mindset for me is I want to look back in 10 years and see different people from different backgrounds rallying around values and principles that we all hold to.
00:36:29.000 I want to isolate something else you said, which I really love, which you keep on giving generous praise to the people around you.
00:36:36.000 Your pastor, a coach who finally started to work with you.
00:36:40.000 Politics aside, because I think that's kind of honestly a silly thing to talk about in this regard, which is, wouldn't it be better if we focused more national attention on giving young men mentors?
00:36:52.000 Giving, I mean, a coach for you might have changed your life, right?
00:36:57.000 Yeah, absolutely.
00:36:58.000 Absolutely.
00:36:58.000 They're needed.
00:37:00.000 And it's just like me having a team on a basketball court.
00:37:03.000 Nobody can do it alone.
00:37:04.000 And so I have my personal team that helps me be the best that I can be.
00:37:12.000 Have you ever had to change who's on your team?
00:37:17.000 Not from necessarily like a personal level, but from like a business level or something like that.
00:37:22.000 Yeah.
00:37:24.000 That needs to happen a lot.
00:37:25.000 What is your final advice here for there's a crisis of masculinity in the country?
00:37:29.000 A lot of young men feel without direction, without purpose.
00:37:33.000 Just the facts.
00:37:34.000 You know, it's the most suicidal generation in history, the most alcohol-addicted generation in history.
00:37:41.000 What's your take?
00:37:42.000 What's your advice?
00:37:42.000 I mean, you are an incredibly successful man and husband and father.
00:37:47.000 Just you look at this and it's a sad state of affairs of young men.
00:37:51.000 What's missing?
00:37:53.000 I think the answer is for us to be the change we want to see.
00:37:58.000 I think more, I think part of the issue is a lot of men see the issue and just sit on it and think that I can't make a difference in this.
00:38:09.000 But it is going to take each of us making a decision to say, I'm going to be the difference.
00:38:14.000 And one person, one young man seeing you or you becoming a mentor to one person can ultimately change the direction of everything that's happening.
00:38:23.000 Are you now enjoying becoming a mentor to rookies in the league?
00:38:26.000 Because as much as you are receiving mentorship, are you starting to now be able to become a mentor yourself?
00:38:32.000 You know, I love our rookies.
00:38:33.000 And, you know, they make jokes about me being an older guy on the team now.
00:38:39.000 But yeah, our rookies are great.
00:38:40.000 And yeah, it's gotten, you know, it's been fun getting to know them and grow.
00:38:45.000 So now I have to ask just some kind of like wonky NBA questions, okay?
00:38:50.000 Diet, sleep, like walk us through all the insight.
00:38:54.000 Like to perform at a high level, I mean, you must burn like 5,000 calories a game or something crazy, right?
00:38:59.000 Something like that.
00:39:01.000 There was one point in my NBA career where I was eating like 5,000, 6,000 calories a day, trying to gain weight.
00:39:08.000 And did it work?
00:39:10.000 It worked, but it didn't at the same time.
00:39:11.000 There were trade-offs.
00:39:12.000 And so as I kind of just let it happen, I was able to put a little weight on it.
00:39:17.000 I'm just like, you know what?
00:39:18.000 I probably should have just let it happen to begin with instead of trying to force it.
00:39:21.000 But honestly, I wouldn't say I'm the most like stickler to like sleep.
00:39:24.000 Oh, yeah.
00:39:25.000 And I don't eat much fried food, but do some of your teammates eat fried food?
00:39:30.000 Oh, yeah.
00:39:31.000 Yeah, yeah, for sure.
00:39:32.000 Yeah.
00:39:32.000 No, no.
00:39:34.000 That's just genetics.
00:39:34.000 And if you're able to play in the NBA, you would be surprised.
00:39:38.000 You know, There are probably a few guys in the NBA that are on strict diets or things.
00:39:43.000 Is that right?
00:39:43.000 I think most guys just, you know, once you get older, for sure, you got to pay more attention to it.
00:39:47.000 But if you saw what the young guys in the league were eating, you'd be like, you'd be surprised.
00:39:52.000 They're eating Chick-fil-A and pizza.
00:39:54.000 And I'm a pizza, I like my pizza cuts.
00:39:56.000 So that's a gift from God, man.
00:39:58.000 If you're to just perform at the high level and to be able to do that.
00:40:01.000 But just talk about, you know, you're on the road, you know, how much sleep you're getting.
00:40:05.000 What does that regimen look like?
00:40:06.000 I mean, it's a grueling schedule.
00:40:08.000 I don't think people realize.
00:40:08.000 What is 72 games, right?
00:40:09.000 Is that 82?
00:40:10.000 82 games, right?
00:40:11.000 82 games plus playoffs, preseason practice.
00:40:14.000 I mean, you are on your feet, moving, burning thousands of calories, easily 1500 days a year in an official Orlando magic environment, and then probably another 75 informally.
00:40:26.000 And then you got to add working on building Unitas.
00:40:30.000 Writing a book that's a national bestseller coming to speak to all of us and being a husband, being a father.
00:40:35.000 So I'm all over the place.
00:40:37.000 I try my best to figure out how to balance it, but I just kind of take it one day at a time and try my best to attack what's in front of me.
00:40:42.000 Yeah, so you say you're not a big sleep guy?
00:40:44.000 No.
00:40:45.000 And you could just perform that way?
00:40:48.000 Yeah, I'm okay.
00:40:52.000 You don't get nervous before games anymore?
00:40:54.000 Oh, yeah, for sure.
00:40:55.000 Yeah, yeah.
00:40:55.000 You still do?
00:40:56.000 Absolutely.
00:40:56.000 Just how do you deal with that?
00:40:58.000 I mean, that's, you know, people ask Charlie, do you get nervous before you speak?
00:41:01.000 I think it depends, right, on the group and all that.
00:41:03.000 But so seven years, you still get.
00:41:06.000 Yeah, for sure.
00:41:06.000 Still, still get nervous before games.
00:41:08.000 And like you said, too, it really, at some point, it does depend on the game, too, if it's a big game, if it's playoffs, things like that.
00:41:13.000 But yeah, for the most part.
00:41:15.000 And then you talk about how do you deal with it again, just continuing to speak truth and speak the word of God.
00:41:20.000 I love, you know, the righteous Rose Bolden's lines.
00:41:23.000 I try my best to recite that to myself every game and just roll out there and go.
00:41:27.000 What's been your favorite moment in the NBA so far?
00:41:30.000 My favorite moment.
00:41:33.000 We made the playoffs two years ago.
00:41:37.000 That was a great experience.
00:41:38.000 And we'll make the playoffs this year.
00:41:40.000 Yeah, you guys are good this year.
00:41:42.000 Absolutely.
00:41:42.000 I don't watch the NBA, but I do.
00:41:44.000 I'm a Jonathan Isaac fan.
00:41:45.000 I don't know about you guys.
00:41:45.000 I'm going to be cheering for one player.
00:41:47.000 One player.
00:41:48.000 One player only.
00:41:50.000 Any closing thoughts, Jonathan, for our audience?
00:41:52.000 Advice for young people, stuff, just to kind of cap it all together.
00:41:57.000 I would say just never necessarily advice, but just for everybody.
00:42:02.000 It's like, you know, there is this craze about, you know, saving our country, protecting our country, and doing all these things.
00:42:09.000 But for me, it's like at the end of the day, it doesn't matter who you vote for, you know, if you're Republican or Democrat, at the end of the day, eternity matters.
00:42:17.000 And I think a part of where we can find peace in what's happening and all the craziness that's going on is in the fact that, you know, Christ did overcome the world at the end of the day.
00:42:28.000 So if our faith is there, then we're going to be okay regardless of what happens in the next year or the next election or anything that happens.
00:42:34.000 It's the most important message.
00:42:36.000 Well, Jonathan, I know I speak for so many.
00:42:38.000 Your courage these last couple years has been inspiring.
00:42:41.000 And you very well could have just done the new coolest thing, but you inspired a lot of people.
00:42:47.000 And God blessed you tremendously for that.
00:42:49.000 And it really means a lot to me because I do not know what an NBA schedule is like.
00:42:56.000 But when I heard you were coming, I was so unbelievably impressed.
00:42:58.000 And I said, whatever we have to do to repay you to help to do this because it shows that you really care about this message and you want to get it out.
00:43:08.000 We can't wait to see you speak on stage.
00:43:10.000 And we're honored that you're here, man.
00:43:11.000 Thank you.
