00:00:00.000 Hi, it's James with The Critical Compass. I just wanted to share my thoughts on the
00:00:06.840 referendum and what's next for the Alberta independence movement. I'm not
00:00:13.140 here to rant and I'm not here to match other people's level of emotion. I just
00:00:18.500 want to share my thoughts and if that resonates, great. And if not, then let me
00:00:25.120 know exactly what you disagree with. First of all, I think the 25% is a remarkable amount. I know 0.71
00:00:35.060 people were hoping for higher, but we have to look at the reality of where we're at in Alberta.
00:00:42.820 25% for a grassroots movement against the full force of the establishment, media,
00:00:49.500 and all major political parties advocating for a federalist position,
00:00:56.660 a 25% result is actually quite impressive.
00:01:01.740 And I think that's a good foundation.
00:01:04.440 Now, I don't think that means we will be changing any hearts instantly.
00:01:11.780 I don't think anything will shift in the next year or two.
00:01:15.040 To go from 25% to 50% in 12 or 24 months is not realistic.
00:01:24.040 So what I think we need to do is take the momentum that we have through all these different organizations.
00:01:35.020 We need to keep on volunteering and we need to grow the movement across multiple domains.
00:01:43.740 Let it be parallel institutions
00:01:47.500 Let it be the educational side
00:01:50.380 Let it be within some of the current institutions
00:01:53.780 That's all work we can be doing moving forward
00:01:59.960 And I know it can kind of be destabilizing right now
00:02:06.660 After a referendum like this
00:02:08.240 It's a huge lead up
00:02:11.240 Many people were campaigning for months and over a year for some as well, volunteering, many events, town halls, live streams, the petition, like we've been going full tilt.
00:02:27.280 I know I've been filming a lot, I've been behind the camera, I've been editing
00:02:31.800 I've been putting in a lot of late nights
00:02:34.160 just to share the message with people outside the movement
00:02:39.880 trying to convince people
00:02:43.060 Now, I'm exhausted
00:02:48.580 a lot of people are exhausted
00:02:50.240 and I think it's worth taking a small break
00:02:54.940 and then putting in these next steps.
00:02:59.100 What that will look like will be different
00:03:01.340 depending on who you are.
00:03:04.180 But I think we need to take this momentum
00:03:06.280 and keep it going in a productive way.
00:03:10.580 That's building a foundation for a sovereign Alberta
00:03:13.680 rather than going on a war path.
00:03:18.640 So it's destabilizing to go from that amount of advocacy
00:03:23.620 to a point where right now, well, there's no clear goal.
00:03:29.020 It's uncertain what the next month or six months or year will look like.
00:03:35.920 And I think that's why a lot of people are directing this towards the UCP
00:03:41.080 and they're looking for a leadership change.
00:03:45.360 Now, I don't think Daniel Smith is the reason we only have 25% support.
00:03:52.180 i don't think we can also pin the success or failure on any individual or even just a couple
00:04:03.460 people it's a collective effort so i don't think even with a different leader that we would have
00:04:11.740 had more than 25 or 30 support in 2026 i don't think the the people are ready so if the people
00:04:21.680 aren't ready then we need to build the foundation we need to be rock solid and level-headed and
00:04:30.100 provide an alternative solution for when all these federalist policies continue to fail
00:04:38.340 and what that means is i i think we need to be very mindful on how we're communicating
00:04:47.760 the messages, how we're reaching out the tone, and how we're dealing with disagreements
00:04:56.640 internally from within the movement.
00:05:00.400 So what we can't have is we can't have purity tests, and we can't be shunning other
00:05:09.680 independence advocates because they don't match the same level of outrage that you have.
00:05:14.980 for example if somebody doesn't say the magic words about daniel smith that they
00:05:22.620 hate daniel smith they have to be replaced
00:05:24.800 like what is that they're no longer an ally like are you going to disregard all the work they put
00:05:32.840 in is that going to be the instant point that you reject them if so this movement is going to get
00:05:40.420 smaller and smaller and more and more fractionated very very quickly nothing destroys movements more 0.66
00:05:46.660 than bullshit ideological tests these purity tests are not helpful
00:05:56.500 with that being said we should be free to criticize and debate ideas without getting
00:06:03.060 into personal attacks so disagree with me all you want but let me know which ideas you disagree with
00:06:14.500 and why my personality or somebody else's personality shouldn't matter so with that
00:06:24.020 i think there's a lot of work to for us just to get more effective at communicating these ideas
00:06:31.460 to others and this is not a short game this is a long game i think it'll take months and months
00:06:39.680 and months for this culture shift to happen and while this happens we're going to see
00:06:46.960 all the other dynamics in canada we're going to see all the failures of carny people are going
00:06:53.720 to be hungry, like money's going to be tight. And while that happens, we have to explain why
00:07:02.020 that's happening and what a solution in an independent Alberta could look like. So
00:07:10.000 for the next month, I know a lot of people are focused on the Alberta AGM. A lot of people are
00:07:20.520 unhappy with Daniel Smith and I have a lot of criticisms too but there's a few different paths
00:07:29.240 we could explore and one path is just let's build a dedicated independence party and what that might
00:07:40.780 look like is split support between the UCP and an independence party and that is likely to get the
00:07:48.060 NDP in. So the second solution is to replace the leader of the UCP, replace Daniel Smith,
00:07:57.840 hold a leadership review, and put in somebody who will be more independence-focused.
00:08:04.900 Now, if half the UCP is not on board with independence right now,
00:08:11.080 a more independence-focused leader may not secure a win in 2027.
00:08:18.060 Like that's only a year to prepare. And right now, strong independence, like advocacy is somewhat politically toxic from within this part, from within the UCP and or with moderates.
00:08:34.000 so I don't know if that's a viable strategy right now if there's somebody really good and articulate
00:08:43.380 then maybe but I'm skeptical of that being it's not going to be a stabilizing force it's going
00:08:52.780 to be destabilizing now the third option is to get behind the UCP for 2027 and secure that win
00:09:03.500 That doesn't mean agreeing with every single policy.
00:09:06.600 And that doesn't mean lying down and doing nothing.
00:09:10.780 That just means securing the win and pushing hard for certain policies,
00:09:18.520 holding leadership to account.
00:09:22.340 But it doesn't mean flipping the table over during the process.
00:09:28.000 perhaps a leadership review would be better in 2028 that gives two years of foundation building
00:09:37.580 that gives two years of advocacy from just from the background and it gives time that
00:09:49.360 maybe daniel smith maybe she has some wins along the way any wins for sovereignty are good
00:09:56.180 And if she continues to fail to implement any of the changes that push us towards sovereignty, then we have examples to help convince those who are hopeful right now.
00:10:09.520 We push back on those.
00:10:12.640 So that's just my honest thoughts.
00:10:18.100 And I know it can feel like we are owed revenge against Daniel Smith.
00:10:25.700 I think that's the perspective of some people. They're on a warpath, and they want revenge. They want something cathartic. They were hoping for something more, and she was the one that prevented it.
00:10:40.900 but I think Alberta's not quite ready
00:10:47.700 and if Alberta's not quite ready
00:10:50.040 then we have work to do across all domains
00:10:53.920 to make that change
00:10:56.120 so the work doesn't stop
00:10:58.660 it's actually just beginning
00:11:00.420 and that means staying engaged with CA boards
00:11:05.160 that means being very informed
00:11:09.780 about every issue and pushing back where you can that means supporting any parallel
00:11:15.700 organizations that pop up i know there's some good work with fergus hodgson he's working on
00:11:23.100 the free nations project or free nations alberta and he's looking to help develop some of these
00:11:31.680 parallel organizations you can still help independent creators uh still go to these
00:11:38.540 town halls. There's going to be town halls. You can still help support and donate to these
00:11:46.060 organizations, and you can just help elevate the messages that will convince more and more people.
00:11:54.000 So what are your thoughts? Do you think we should go down the warpath? Should we flip the table?
00:12:01.520 Or are we going to play the long game? Are cooler heads going to prevail, or are we going to let
00:12:07.500 our emotions get the best of us. So let me know your thoughts, and I'll see you in the next one.
