Transcript

00:00:00.000 he's not a conservative but glenn greenwald is often lumped in with conservatives uh another
00:00:10.240 person who spent most of his career apolitically not being not apolitical but not being associated
00:00:18.700 one way or another with any given wing uh just reporting on news whoever happens to do it being
00:00:25.160 known as a as an anti-war reporter more than anything else but if you criticize the wrong
00:00:31.240 side for the same things you get lumped in with the opposite side so i mean it's uh it's sort of a
00:00:38.840 we're going beyond our show notes here james but this is a this is an interesting um phenomenon
00:00:45.360 that we're seeing where you it sort of relates to for being a queer for palestine where it doesn't
00:00:50.320 particularly matter what the nuance of your views or the nuance of your uh demographic is
00:00:58.460 if you believe the wrong thing in the moment you're done yeah and what what ends up happening is you've
00:01:06.960 got certain shows that are a little bit left-leaning or media that is left-leaning and when you have an
00:01:13.920 opinion that does not fit with kind of their idea of acceptable discourse what they do is they stop
00:01:21.940 inviting certain commenters to things and these may be left-leaning commenters and then when you have
00:01:30.820 other media outlets on the right or you have podcasts or you have people wanting to have conversations
00:01:36.740 and we'll have conversations with anybody doesn't matter what side of this political discourse you're on
00:01:42.660 what ends up happening is these alt-right uh podcasts these alt-right media will invite these
00:01:49.840 people to have conversations and just because they're curious and now the left-wing media will
00:01:57.180 look at that and say well we can't invite this person back because they are now on these
00:02:03.880 right-wing shows and therefore they are a right-winger and that's how they do is they just push people out
00:02:12.160 like and just by not and you can see you'd be curious maybe we do an episode and we show the
00:02:19.200 cases of people who have been slowly excommunicated from who like appeared a lot on mainstream media
00:02:27.120 and were not allowed on after a certain point or not invited back well i can think of two examples
00:02:33.540 right now uh matt taibbi and michael schellenberger i mean two guys who both left to center oh for sure
00:02:43.080 i mean schellenberger made his entire career reporting on uh as a as an environmentalist reporting on and
00:02:49.880 writing about renewable energy and the homelessness crisis in california like a very self-described
00:02:57.200 progressive liberal man who now he made the mistake of being associated with elon musk another noted
00:03:06.340 former self-described democrat like he used to be a shining star of the left like musk was held up
00:03:17.160 and he was mentioned he was interviewed a lot and now he's described as white right wing regardless of
00:03:24.900 they actually this label gets thrown around regardless of any like due diligence of actually
00:03:31.380 checking if people if their views have shifted that's right it's just a slur that's used how big
00:03:38.340 of a shift sorry to interrupt how big of a shift speaking of podcasts did has joe rogan taken in the
00:03:43.940 last two three years joe rogan the has always been a self-described liberal person uh supportive of
00:03:52.800 the welfare state of uh a bernie bro he was one of the original bernie bros right uh this is a guy who
00:04:00.340 talks regularly about being uh growing up on food stamps and the importance of social programs and how
00:04:06.980 uh obama is his favorite president the most he views as the most presidential president we've ever had
00:04:13.580 like literally nothing about this guy is conservative in his in his life other than
00:04:20.560 i don't know people associate now i was i was watching a an x twitter x video the other day about
00:04:26.920 how people associate uh health and fitness with the right wing now so i don't know i guess
00:04:33.420 if you're really interested in working out and and weights then you're following some conspiracy
00:04:39.220 theories as well so conspiracy theories about uh about uh body mass index yeah so i don't know man
00:04:47.260 it's it's kind of sad to see the this the overton window the acceptable discourse be narrowed and
00:04:56.560 this is where like i i guess that's been the most interesting and also kind of frustrating and kind
00:05:04.840 of draining this last month is seeing we we've lost nuance along the way and the
00:05:13.700 palestine israel conflict has it has people divided again and what i'm worried every time people are
00:05:23.320 divided i'm worried about some of these bigger issues it's like people are so focused on these
00:05:28.000 things and we're not seeing kind of creeping authoritarian and policies we're not seeing
00:05:34.460 digital ids or these health passes or these things that erode away at the individual sovereignty of
00:05:41.920 countries and the sovereignty of citizens within those countries and people are so focused on these
00:05:48.400 other things and like well that's this is important but there's still some of these bigger
00:05:53.180 issues out on there and we're so distracted at the moment
00:05:56.560 so
