00:01:27.980 North Media, Alberta NDP wants tiki torches condemned as symbols of white supremacy. This

00:01:36.380 came from yesterday on the True North Wire from True North Media. An Alberta NDP MLA will be putting

00:01:43.400 forward a motion on Monday, as of yesterday, asking the Alberta government to denounce tiki

00:01:48.360 torches as symbols of white supremacy. In a statement, NDP MLA Thomas Dang said that the use of tiki

00:01:55.840 torches in multiple protests held in Alberta recently is an example of blatant racism. These groups with tiki 1.00

00:02:02.700 torches, these individuals brandishing Confederate flags, are deliberately attempting to spread hate

00:02:07.340 and racism in our communities, Dang said. This is wrong. We have heard overwhelmingly from

00:02:12.880 Albertans that there is no place for hate in our community. According to the NDP, tiki torches have

00:02:17.720 become a symbol of far-right extremism since they were used in 2017's white supremacist rally in

00:02:24.120 Charlottesville, Virginia. Tiki torches, an expensive and accessible light source, have been seen at multiple

00:02:30.020 anti-lockdown protests in Alberta in recent weeks. The demonstrations in question have been focused on

00:02:36.400 opposing public health restrictions. While the motion asked to condemn all symbols and insignia

00:02:41.360 associated with racism and hate speech, only tiki torches are named as an example of an offensive

00:02:46.640 symbol. Those bloody garden lights! The NDP want tiki torches to be banned from public spaces. While the NDP

00:02:53.880 wants the protesters and their tiki torches condemned as white supremacists, law enforcement does

00:02:58.840 not think white supremacy has been a factor. You think? Earlier in March, Edmonton Police Service's

00:03:05.580 Chief Dale McPhee said they do not have evidence that tiki torches were being used as a symbol of

00:03:11.780 hate in Alberta. We don't have the evidence, McPhee said. That simple. Just because somebody says it's

00:03:17.280 racist rally or they're using something, you still have to have intent under the criminal code. McPhee noted

00:03:23.340 to that members of the hate crimes unit were at the protests and did not see any criminal hate

00:03:29.320 happening. When asked, protesters holding tiki torches did not have a particular reason for choosing

00:03:34.560 that item. Well, that's self-explanatory and you can tell that's speculation. Now, I mentioned this

00:03:40.180 before. The NDP was calling tiki torches racist, but that's my point here, ladies and gentlemen. 0.88

00:04:31.840 against the norm of that time, okay? And now, just because someone owns a rebel flag doesn't

00:04:37.580 necessarily mean they're a bigot or they're a racist. I've had history teachers that owned Nazi flags
