00:02:58.880 8th and Harrison must be removed and everyone living at the site must leave early Tuesday

00:03:04.120 morning police stepped in telling residents to remove their items which were scattered across

00:03:08.820 the street. The encampment has been at the center of a long legal battle. The city previously tried

00:03:14.500 to clean up the area, but the Berkeley Homeless Union filed a lawsuit last year that put those

00:03:19.060 plans on hold. A federal judge is now allowing the city to clear the encampment, though the

00:03:23.460 ruling requires the city to provide special accommodations to disabled residents living

00:03:28.800 at the site. These accommodations include helping disabled individuals move and providing storage

00:03:34.660 for their belongings. The fire marshal has declared the encampment a fire hazard and a

00:03:38.940 public nuisance. City officials say they need to demolish structures at the site and carry out

00:03:44.240 rodent abatement. The site was previously impacted by a leptospirosis outbreak that began last year,

00:03:51.440 circulating among dogs and rats. Bacterial infections spread to at least two humans,

00:03:56.380 resulting in one death and one hospitalization. These marked the first known human cases of

00:04:01.100 leptospirosis in the city in over a decade. Hundreds of rats remain visible at the site.

00:13:34.480 morning. And you go and you're clean. And you say, thank you. Then you can even get money from the

00:13:41.660 government. I want to get a place to live. They've got all of that stuff for you. You can get a job.

00:13:49.060 you can start from the bottom. It's possible. I know because I've met people who did.

00:13:53.700 I remember this one guy, middle-aged white dude, scruffy mustache and glasses. I don't know exactly

00:13:59.520 what his job was, but he got laid off. I think he was a divorcee and he couldn't afford his rent

00:14:04.840 and he ended up being homeless. Two weeks. Two weeks. No joke. He was homeless. He went to the

00:14:13.600 shelter and said, I don't know where else to go. I'm ashamed and embarrassed. And they said,

00:14:18.120 anything you need. He was clean. He was well shaven. He went to a thrift store, picked up

00:14:23.600 some clothes. I think they had clothes for him, actually, because they have closets. They were

00:14:27.040 like, we can get you some nice clothes. He's like, thank you so much. He got a job. Two weeks,

00:14:30.900 he was gone. I kid you not, because they'll give you. So not only do they have shelter houses with

00:14:36.120 dorms, they own houses like a four or five bedroom. And they'll say a bedroom is available.

00:14:42.440 I don't want to say halfway house, but they're basically like that. So dude takes it. He now

00:14:47.240 has a room in a house. He lives with a couple other middle-aged guys. They work, and they're

00:14:53.060 trying to get a saving so they can rent their own place. And then within two weeks, he's in one of

00:15:03.160 with some people he had met who were also trying to do the same thing. It's not comfortable. It's

00:16:53.600 machine, to work nine to five, to struggle to pay his rent? It's not a life he wants to live.
