00:06:01.740The Gavin Newsom probe is serious and he knows it.
00:06:04.580From the California Post editorial board, they write.
00:06:08.100Gavin Newsom and his press office aides gone wild have been trying to mock Trump on social media for more than a year,
00:06:13.420regardless of the consequences of state for state federal relations.
00:06:16.540But he can't laugh it off. He can't laugh off the DOJ probe into his family finances.
00:06:22.200And while Newsom claims the investigation is politically motivated, he knows it's serious.
00:06:26.160That's why he and his inner circle are reportedly starting to worry. Really. Newsom knows the
00:06:32.720investigations go back to the Biden administration. His former chief of staff, Dana Williamson,
00:06:37.440pleaded guilty last month in federal court in Sacramento to conspiracy to commit bank fraud
00:06:43.100and wire fraud. Among other misdeeds, she and her co-conspirators stole money from the dormant
00:06:49.020state campaign account of Javier Becerra, a left-wing Democrat who is now the favorite
00:06:53.560to succeed Newsom. Becerra had denied any knowledge of the crime. Indeed, he claims he is a victim.
00:06:59.440A part of the alleged scheme involved using Becerra's campaign money to supplement the salary
00:07:04.020of his own chief of staff when he was Biden's secretary of health and human services. How could
00:07:08.380these shenanigans go on under Newsom's nose? Part of the answer is that Sacramento has a long
00:07:13.700history of tolerating corruption, thanks to one party rule, the passive media and a culture of
00:07:19.400mutual backscratching. For example, Democrat Daryl Steinberg presided over the state Senate at a time
00:07:25.980when several members were indicted and convicted for various crimes. After failing to clean up
00:07:31.540that legislative body, he became a lobbyist, then ran for mayor of Sacramento and won serving until
00:07:36.3002024. Newsom likewise escaped political consequences when he won a recall election in
00:07:42.0802021 that was held after he hobnobbed mask lists with lobbyists in the elite French laundry
00:07:48.680restaurant in Napa during the coronavirus pandemic after telling restaurants in the rest of the state
00:07:53.720to close down. His now infamous dinner speaks to poor ethical and political judgment, but also to
00:07:59.460the fact that Democrats in Sacramento fear no consequences for their actions. Newsom also
00:08:04.320raised hundreds of millions of dollars for charity through behested payments in which he
00:08:09.320asked donors to contribute to nonprofit organizations of his choice. Though legal in
00:08:14.340California, these payments often suggest glaring conflicts of interest. Some of the recipients
00:08:18.300have businesses before the state. One recipient organization was founded by his wife, Jennifer
00:08:24.320Seibel Newsom. It looks bad, yet it continues because Newsom and his party don't believe anyone
00:08:29.720will hold them accountable. And they were right until now. Newsom has coasted for most of his
00:08:35.000career. Aside from personal scandals as mayor of San Francisco, his path to lieutenant governor
00:08:39.860was an easy one. And for eight years, he was Jerry Brown's heir apparent. That is that is a
00:08:44.900long time to be in office. And it's a lot of power. Newsom was happy to see federal prosecutors
00:08:49.220chase Trump and his associates for Russia collusion that never happened. Now he faces
00:08:53.320real consequences. And you know who else thinks so? Shockingly, Adam Schiff. Adam Schiff uses
00:08:59.900this opportunity to attack Donald Trump, but also says, you know, this might be real.
00:09:07.260So I've been on the president's enemies list since he was president the first time because I led his
00:09:12.100impeachment and I served on the January 6th committee. So for me, this is nothing new.
00:09:16.900But I served for almost six years as a federal prosecutor.
00:09:22.300And to see the Justice Department so badly abused, to see the mass defections of prosecutors, ethical prosecutors, leaving the office in Los Angeles where I serve, leaving offices all over the country, it is really horrifying.
00:09:38.040There used to be a presumption when I was a prosecutor, it was certainly the case,
00:09:42.180that prosecutors were acting in good faith and judges gave them that presumption.
00:09:48.440That presumption now has been flipped on its head.
00:09:51.280And in any case where the president announces that he wants his opponents investigated,
00:09:56.580the presumption should be flipped on its head.
00:09:58.820That is, there should be a presumption of irregularity.
00:10:02.000It should be a presumption against an investigation when it's one the president is calling for of his political enemies.
00:10:09.000No, even Donald Trump and Biden, it should not be immediately presumed that this is illegitimate.
00:10:16.180Even Donald Trump. The question with Donald Trump and my issue with it was that Biden himself had had classified documents they did not prosecute him for and then went after Trump for which shows irregularity.
00:10:28.620But if you come out and say you believe a president has done wrong, we say, OK, preponderance of evidence.
00:10:33.600What do you got? Then you can go for a grand jury or do whatever you got to do.
00:10:36.680You got to go through impeachment. That's fine.
00:10:38.600But right now, to claim that because there's an investigation into Newsom, it wreaks a big irregularity.
00:10:44.180This is equivocating Newsom's the investigation into his illicit dealings started under Biden.
00:10:49.840So, no, not irregularity. But shift continues.
00:10:53.720So I think we have to assume that these are political, that these are not based on fact until proven otherwise.
00:11:03.780But to see the department used this way is doing lasting damage to the rule of law in America.
00:11:11.760And it's not just the president using the Justice Department to go after his enemies.
00:11:15.920He's also using it to protect his friends.
00:11:18.680So he's pardoning criminals that do business with his family.
00:11:23.280He is making investigations go away involving corrupt allies.
00:11:28.840The mayor of New York, the former mayor of New York, had been indicted on corruption charges.
00:11:33.320Donald Trump made those charges go away because the mayor was useful to him on other things.
00:11:38.760So we're seeing more corruption, not less, as a result of this Justice Department and its use against the president's enemies.
00:11:47.180But, I mean, the difference between you and other politicians who have been the target of some of these investigations,
00:11:52.640their ex-chiefs of staff were not indicted. And that's the case for the governor, where
00:12:00.340one of his advisors and chiefs of staff were, I mean, caught up in this corruption case that
00:12:06.640began with the Biden administration. I mean, is it out of the realm of possibility that there
00:12:11.700could be a legitimate investigation here, stemming from that at least?
00:12:16.620Well, my understanding is that the governor's former chief of staff said the governor had no
00:12:20.300involvement in what she ended up pleading guilty to. So that's as much as I know of the facts of
00:12:26.200that. Look, I'm not saying that there can never be merit to an investigation, even when it involves
00:12:31.800someone that is not a fan of the president. But what we are seeing, what we have seen,
00:12:37.720is such dramatic proof of the abuse of the department. The indictment of James Comey over
00:12:44.800seashells, for example, is inexplicable.
00:13:41.120He then says, my understanding is that the governor's former chief of staff said the governor had no involvement in what she ended up pleading guilty to.
00:13:48.680So that's as much as I know of the facts.
00:20:17.060Tensions between the Trump admin and the California Democratic leaders escalated as primary ballot counting continued Friday after a federal prosecutor said without evidence that he's investigating unspecified allegations of fraud.
