00:00:05.720 guest michael franzese let's get into we got a lot to talk about let's go 0.94

00:00:30.000 right and we are back

00:00:59.980 what's up guys welcome to the fresh shit podcast man i am super excited today's episode 0.68

00:01:03.660 we're here with the legend himself michael franzese uh guys we're tight for time so i'm

00:01:08.640 never going to read the uh we're not going to go through the normal announcements we're going to go

00:01:11.540 right ahead and introduce you to the special guest mike i know who you are i'm excited to have you

00:01:15.360 here can you introduce yourself to the people for those that might not know well it's great to be

00:01:19.180 here myron and one of my favorite places on the planet miami so it's great to be here thanks for

00:01:24.040 having me and uh many moons ago a couple of uh decades ago i was a copper regime in the colombo

00:01:30.960 crime family one of the five new york mafia families and uh i was in that life for about 20 25 years my

00:01:38.000 dad before me was the underboss of that family very high uh position in that life and um i did quite

00:01:45.120 well i had some success rose from yeah from soldier to capo and uh i was more of a racketeer than a

00:01:51.920 gangster you know there's kind of a separation in that life between racketeers and gangsters

00:01:56.060 racketeers are the guys who really brought the money in and supported the family gangsters did

00:02:00.600 some other work you know and um you know so became a major target of law enforcement right away

00:02:07.440 i had probably 18 arrests i had uh seven criminal indictments two federal racketeering indictments one

00:02:14.100 brought on by giuliani sheesh and um went to trial five times i beat every case beat all five

00:02:20.320 cases and then uh eventually um i went down on a big rico case i took a plea 10-year prison sentence

00:02:27.760 i had a 15 million dollar restitution and went off and do my time did my time and then decided uh for

00:02:34.440 a number of reasons we can get into that i was going to try to make a break from that life and

00:02:39.220 something you don't normally do you know publicly walk away not enter a witness protection program one of

00:02:44.100 the only guys by the way well very fortunate to be able to do that and uh here i am some 20 some

00:02:49.500 odd years later and i'm able to sit down and talk with you absolutely man um so can you take us

00:02:54.860 through um your childhood and what led to you getting into that life yeah well like i said my

00:03:00.920 dad was very very high profile he was kind of like the gotti john gotti of the uh of his time

00:03:06.100 and became a major target of law enforcement right away so i was always around uh you know law enforcement

00:03:13.180 and their tactics were very different back then than they are today and everything's very covert

00:03:17.940 well back then when my dad was under investigation he had seven eight different agencies

00:03:22.960 surveilling him 24 hours a day seven days a week around us all the time yeah so i i really grew up

00:03:28.820 hating the police because i love my dad he was my hero my idol and um you know he didn't want this

00:03:34.580 life for me originally he wanted me to go to school be a doctor and i was on that road till he got in a lot

00:03:39.300 of trouble he was indicted uh three times in the state of new york twice for grand loss and he once for

00:03:44.180 murder uh he beat all of those cases but then he was indicted in federal court for masterminding a

00:03:50.540 nationwide string of bank robbers goes to trial gets convicted they sentenced him to 50 years in

00:03:55.980 prison yeah it was the longest sentence for a bank robbery conspiracy case i think ever given up to that

00:04:01.180 point yeah 1970 and this is in the 60s when they indicted him for that right in the 60s before rico laws

00:04:06.900 before rico yeah oh if it was rico he'd gotten 150 years yeah but um so he goes off he loses all his

00:04:13.240 bills in 1970 he goes away to leavenworth and he was 50 years old when he went in and for me you know

00:04:20.140 add 50 on top of that it's a death sentence right and around the same time joe colombo was organizing

00:04:25.840 the italian american civil rights league we're very close to joey our family my dad was his underboss

00:04:31.040 so he kind of took me under his wing i started meeting a lot of my dad's friends you know mike what do you

00:04:36.440 don't go to school if you don't help your father out he's going to die in prison and i will tell you 0.58

00:04:40.520 this you know my dad did obviously a lot of bad things in his life so did i i went to you know

00:04:46.500 jail for a crime i was guilty of but that particular crime that he did 40 years in prison of uh my dad

00:04:53.240 was innocent of he was framed he wasn't a bank robber well the people that testified against him

00:04:57.280 were all drug addicts all drug addicts and just bad people and i'll take that to my grave we

00:05:01.940 investigated that case he was innocent so i'm saying you know i have an obligation

00:05:06.320 i got to try to help my father get out of prison so these bank robbers got caught and they were

00:05:10.040 basically saying that your dad is the one that put them up to doing it is that is that what they

00:05:13.640 basically it was it was very smart yeah they committed all the bank robberies they did everything

00:05:18.180 and they said they were at one meeting with my father where he ordered the bank robber wow that was

00:05:22.940 it they didn't even testify to giving him any money he just ordered the bank robber it was a setup

00:05:28.120 yeah and believe it or not the jury believed it took him three or four days to convict him but they

00:05:32.740 believed it and he got 50 years and it was a setup there's no question because we heard from witnesses

00:05:38.000 afterwards how the fbi was complicit in it what they did and all that but you know well they they

00:05:42.960 had a huge i don't think people and i've talked about this before my other channel but like they

00:05:46.500 had a huge heart on for the mafia back then like nowadays it's all terrorism and you know counter

00:05:51.420 espionage but back then that was their number one thing was going after organized crime namely the

00:05:56.760 mafia so when did your father get into the life what what decade young i mean he was uh you know

00:06:03.000 just just to finish it off my dad was released from prison at the age of 100 he was the oldest

00:06:08.000 inmate in the federal system at the time of his release yeah and he passed away at 103 um but he got

00:06:14.940 in and like he was a tough kid he was born in 1916 or 17 and you know from the 30s on he was involved

00:06:22.180 with wise guys and he got made when he was about 30 years old so back in the 40s 30 30s and 40s so

00:06:28.340 he knew lucky luciano absolutely luciano and all those guys he knew luciano he knew lansky he knew

00:06:33.320 frank costello wow vito genovese you know them all yeah uh the mazzeria all those guys all of them um

00:06:39.620 so he was there during what was it called the custom malaria yes yeah he was there he wasn't involved

00:06:45.980 in it but he was there yeah yeah that was one of the most violent times and then so when lucky

00:06:51.860 luciano uh you know i guess prevailed after all that and ended up making the and just so you guys

00:06:56.640 understand real fast so i'm going to pull up a chart for you guys so you understand what i'm

00:06:59.680 talking about here because some of you guys might be a little confused uh so the hierarchy with uh with

00:07:04.240 the mafia guys this comes from the fbi the ops but uh did they they have it here in a way that is easy

00:07:08.720 to understand right that new york has five main crime families and you were uh high ranking in the

00:07:12.700 colombo yes um and then you got obviously the the top the boss right and then beside him is can you

00:07:19.380 describe each of these positions that's consulieri to the right yes yeah you can hit control plus on

00:07:23.740 it more a little bit so it's bigger for the people to see there you go yeah and the consulieri was kind

00:07:29.220 of like the advisor i mean we've seen that position in the godfather even though it was fictional

00:07:33.280 because you know you got to be italian in order i was gonna say it was an irish guy in the movie

00:07:36.820 yeah yeah yeah but uh you know he did a good job though but uh yeah and and the boss he handpicks

00:07:43.640 that person to be his advisor and really the function of the consulieri is to be a liaison

00:07:49.200 between the soldiers and the boss you got a problem with the boss you go see the consulieri

00:07:54.620 the problem with that the boss picks the consulieri if you got a problem with the

00:07:58.420 the boss and tell the consulieri you're probably going to get killed yeah

00:08:01.240 it doesn't work well and uh and then you have the underboss who's normally the second in command

00:08:08.840 and just so people understand if the boss is eliminated or he dies or whatever he retires

00:08:14.820 the underboss doesn't automatically take over he doesn't they're still among the men they choose

00:08:20.240 who they want and it's it's so it's not an automatic position for the underboss i didn't know that okay

00:08:25.240 yeah and then you have couple regimes or captains and they're appointed by the boss and they're kind

00:08:30.960 of the street bosses and then they're given authority over the soldiers and the soldier is the lowest rank

00:08:36.480 after you take your oath and you're made yeah and uh that's it so um so you were you were a capo and uh

00:08:43.480 and it took you how long did it take it took you quite a bit of time to become a cop it was five years

00:08:48.920 okay yeah so can you tell us real quick about because you were a pre-med student right yes and you decided

00:08:54.480 to to leave that and uh get into the life what made you get into life and what was the trajectory there

00:08:59.700 well i had a meeting with my dad in leavenworth penitentiary and he was away and i said dad i'm not going to school

00:09:05.540 if i don't help you out you're going to die in here you know so we need money for lawyers we got 0.55

00:09:09.240 to track down these witnesses because he kept saying i'm innocent i'm innocent yeah and i knew

00:09:14.120 i had to help him so i'm not going to be able to help you go into school you know i got to get out

00:09:17.780 and do it and the guys influenced me when i was you know i was walking the line the picket lines for

00:09:22.900 the italian american civil rights league i was meeting everybody so uh he looked at me he said okay

00:09:28.020 because i was a headstrong kid my mind was made up and he said but if you're going to be on the street i want

00:09:32.420 you on the street the right way and uh to him the right way was to become a member of his life so

00:09:37.660 he proposed me for membership at that point because you know people say well how do you become a member

00:09:42.500 well you can't go up to somebody say i want to join somebody's got to propose you they got to vouch for

00:09:47.100 you and in my case was my dad so you come in what was a day in the life of um and it's because you're

00:09:54.100 an associate first right you come in as an associate you didn't come in and automatically as a made

00:09:57.480 guy you had to earn that what was a day in the life like as a as an associate well here's the deal

00:10:01.740 about two weeks after my dad uh he said go home i'm going to send word downtown they'll send for you

00:10:07.440 so a captain in the family picked me up and took me to see the boss at that point and his name was

00:10:12.740 tom de bella he's passed on now and he said mike i got a message from your father you want to become

00:10:17.400 a member of our life is that true i said yes he said here's the deal from now on 24 hours a day seven

00:10:22.800 days a week you're on call to serve this family the colombo family that means if your mother is

00:10:27.520 sick and dying and you're at her bedside we call you to service you leave your mother you come and 0.78

00:10:32.040 serve us yeah from now on we're number one in your life before anything and everything and you do what

00:10:36.740 you're told and then the captain turned around to me andrew and he said i'll be here tomorrow morning

00:10:41.720 eight o'clock wear a suit that was it and that's your order and every day from that point on i'm a

00:10:48.280 recruit and i got to do anything and everything i'm told to do so what did that range like in

00:10:52.720 duties was it like driving people around was it well you know i had at the same time i was in the

00:10:57.300 car business so i always had a good car i would buy a car sell a car so i always drove something nice so

00:11:02.400 i would drive into brooklyn and the boss would say i like your car we're going to use your car you sit

00:11:07.160 in the back i'll drive and so i would sit in the back and they would go wherever and i'm there and i'm

00:11:11.600 just there you know because you can't participate in most anything when you're a recruit but you're

00:11:16.240 observing everything yeah you're kind of learning the ropes and then your day is going to come when

00:11:21.080 you're called upon to do things and you got to do them you know you can't refuse an order so you do

00:11:25.060 what you have to do gotcha um so how long did you do that before you became just about two years

00:11:31.000 two years yeah when i got made there was a an expression in that life that the books were closed

00:11:36.480 from the 1950s to the early to mid 70s they weren't making anybody the only way they would make

00:11:43.140 somebody and this was all five families agreed to this if somebody died in a family you'd be able to

00:11:48.000 bring a new guy in other than that you couldn't do it but in the mid 70s they opened up the books

00:11:52.720 and they said all right we can start to bring some people in so when i got made there was guys waiting

00:11:57.900 20 years to become a made guy yeah wow and then we come in you know a couple of us and we go right

00:12:03.800 to the top you know i was one of the first guys made and uh and that was out of respect for my dad

00:12:08.660 too because he requested it and that was it and they gave him that courtesy uh so that was uh that

00:12:14.260 happened for me in 1975 is there jealousy in a family when it happens when you come in there's

00:12:18.720 always jealousy yeah i mean the older guys i mean it's just like life you know uh they resented the

00:12:24.460 younger guys you know even the older guys that were made for a long time if you come into that life

00:12:29.180 they still feel that they have superiority over you but they don't when you come into that life you

00:12:34.760 you're told we're all equal the boss is even equal to a soldier he may be higher in rank but the boss is

00:12:41.060 not supposed to disrespect a soldier either because we're all made guys and that's the status

00:12:45.960 being made um but the older guys always i had a lot of resentment against me i was one of the younger

00:12:51.400 ones and you got to deal with it you got to learn how to do what was um the fact that your father was

00:12:55.920 so high ranking and you got you were able to get made within two to three years made them a lot

00:12:59.820 jealous oh yeah i mean guys were geez we're waiting 20 years you know and they don't verbally say

00:13:05.260 that to you but you know they're thinking that as a matter of fact one guy did say it to me

00:13:08.840 recently i'm not going to mention his name you know who he is yeah um so can you just can you

00:13:14.860 tell the people uh what being made is and what it takes to be made and then the night that you got

00:13:18.740 made you know being made is is taking the oath and becoming a quote made man and so for me it was

00:13:25.900 halloween night 1975 and they don't prepare you you know every day you go you don't know when it's

00:13:30.720 going to happen because for security reasons they don't want anybody talking is that the oaf of

00:13:34.280 omerta yes omerta and so for me halloween night i got the call that day and i said just be in

00:13:41.140 brooklyn and wear a suit as usual and then i knew something was up that day things were a little bit

00:13:47.520 different than normal and uh so that night you know was six of us that took the oath and just to

00:13:54.620 describe it it was late at night and uh joe colombo's son anthony had a had a uh catering hall and so we did

00:14:02.640 it there it was a secure place and uh we walked into the room the six of us individually both

00:14:08.000 seated at the head of like a horseshoe configuration on the bus consulary to his left and right and all

00:14:13.140 the captains were alongside of them soldiers were not allowed at this only captains and so uh walked

00:14:18.800 down the aisle stood in front of the boss held on my hand took a knife cut my finger some blood dropped 0.91

00:14:23.320 on the floor this is a blood oath cupped my hands he took a picture of a saint catholic altar card put it

00:14:28.860 on my hands lit it aflame didn't hurt it burned quickly it was merely symbolic and he said tonight

00:14:33.800 michael francis you're being born again into a new life into cousin ostra violate what you know about 0.99

00:14:40.000 this life betray your brothers and you will die burn in hell like the saint is burning in your hands 0.99

00:14:44.920 do you accept yes i do and you know when people people don't know what omerta really is they think 0.96

00:14:51.860 it's uh you're taking an oath to lie steal cheat kill it's not what it is the oath of omerta is an

00:14:58.040 oath of silence you're not even supposed to admit that the life exists that's the oath of course you

00:15:05.300 do other things along with it but you're not taking an oath to do that you're taking an oath

00:15:08.620 never to betray the life in any way shape or form wow okay so um and there's a bunch of prerequisites

00:15:14.720 right you had to be italian right your father had to be italian okay um never had attended a police

00:15:21.160 academy before no you're not yeah you cannot so like let's say you were a cop and you said you know

00:15:25.340 what i want to get into this life you can't get in no and understand this before you're made they

00:15:29.940 put your name on a piece of paper and they send it around to all five families and everybody sees it

00:15:35.500 and so you have an objection about this guy let us know before we bring him in kind of security

00:15:39.940 reason oh wow so it actually went to the commission level for oh yeah okay yeah before the boss and he

00:15:45.460 distributes to his people we're making this guy you got anything to say about him any reason we

00:15:49.820 shouldn't reference points okay okay and that was among all all the five families so uh what else you had

00:15:54.800 your father had to be italian never had attended a police academy um you had to have done work was

00:15:59.960 there like a prerequisite of how much time you had to be in as an associate before getting made

00:16:03.260 no no like i said some guys 20 years and me it was two years uh you got to do what you're told

00:16:09.780 yeah that's it so they won't let me in

00:16:12.400 unfortunately for you you're out

00:16:18.460 uh so um so also so there were a bunch of rules um back then and there this is a point of contention

00:16:25.980 and i really want to bring this up because people get mad at me when i say this drug trafficking wasn't

00:16:30.280 allowed right um in your day i know guys were involved in it but can you tell us a little bit

00:16:35.320 about that because everyone thinks like oh no the mafia was selling drugs they were blah blah but i tell

00:16:39.460 them all the time you weren't supposed to do it i get beat up every time i say this yeah but you know

00:16:44.340 here's the facts during my era in that life drugs were not allowed they were banned i was told straight

00:16:51.260 out the day that uh uh you know that i sat with tom de bella the first time you deal with drugs you

00:16:57.460 die we don't deal with drugs in any way shape or form the night i got made same thing drugs are

00:17:03.000 off limits not that we were angels and saints it was too much heat we didn't want to hurt kids

00:17:08.140 that's the truth now people come back oh michael vito genovese went away from drug i said my era

00:17:14.500 vito genovese died in the early 60s was different then yeah and i'm not saying that guys weren't doing

00:17:20.200 drugs little deals here and there but we weren't cartels we weren't big drug dealers now the sicilians

00:17:26.720 in italy big drug dealers big heroin dealers big drug dealers we weren't doing it there as a matter

00:17:32.120 of fact i try to tell people why do you think john gott he was in trouble with castellano because

00:17:36.740 his crew was dealing drugs and they weren't supposed to and that's when the whole thing

00:17:40.980 happened with because castellano was going to take him out yep and then john acted first so we were

00:17:46.120 not allowed to deal with drugs i never deal with you i hate anything to do and just so the audience 0.69

00:17:50.000 understands paul castellano was the boss of the gambino crime family yes god he was a capo at the

00:17:56.760 time if i'm not mistaken and he was john gott he very famous guys we could put a pic pull a picture

00:18:02.140 up of him real quick back in the 90s and early 80s he was dealing drugs paul

00:18:06.660 castellano didn't like that because obviously it brings heat well let me be clear on that because

00:18:10.620 john is his family and i his crew allegedly was dealing drugs okay it wasn't john directly but

00:18:16.760 his crew allegedly was at least that's what castellano had said yeah and so they they were

00:18:21.760 going to go after him and get him um and he had because it was back then right if i'm not mistaken

00:18:28.300 you had to have the commission sign off on killing guy right and he made guy no not true you didn't

00:18:34.520 not true here's the thing the commission how do i uh how do i describe it it was like the united

00:18:41.120 nations it sounded good but it didn't have a lot of power really i mean and and the commission can

00:18:48.680 never tell the boss of his own family what to do he had his own autonomy okay now if they all agreed

00:18:54.360 on something like when they agreed not to make anybody okay they're all in agreement but a boss wanted

00:18:59.300 to take somebody out in his family he could do it now the other way around if somebody wanted to

00:19:04.800 take a boss that's what i meant yes they should get commission uh sanctioned for that because

00:19:09.800 that's john got you right there from back in the day but uh sorry go ahead continue yeah i mean you're

00:19:14.660 getting trouble for that and and and you know john when he took castellano out i mean it wasn't

00:19:20.200 looked upon well yeah the bosses were not happy about it yeah um yeah they shot him right in front

00:19:25.160 of his favorite steakhouse uh sparks spark there we go sparks um so so the so the drug dealing thing so

00:19:32.800 and what was the main reasons like they didn't want to that they didn't want to do it was was it

00:19:37.580 because the drug trafficking game is just a dirty game in general people a lot of informants a lot of

00:19:41.240 people turn a lot of informants too much heat from the fbi and uh and honestly they didn't want to

00:19:47.460 hurt kids yeah you know a lot of guys that i knew unfortunately in that life their kids got

00:19:52.120 involved in drugs and they always talk bad about it my kid is a junkie and they said they talk bad

00:19:57.460 about it so they didn't want to put that on other kids that's how i was told and i believe it i believe

00:20:02.280 it so you do you have something so back in the day when you were a federal agent would you ever go

00:20:08.000 after the mafia yeah so it's interesting like we did organize crime because after the fbi really

00:20:14.320 focused on um not after 9 11 fbi shifted its focus and went straight to terrorism that's what

00:20:19.600 they want to do national security so homeland security took on a lot of the organized crime

00:20:23.780 but by then uh the mafia wasn't as prominent like you know in 2003 as it was but in the 70s 80s like

00:20:30.660 you know that's all the fbi was going after which they're even back then they were supposed to focus

00:20:34.060 on terrorism but they didn't they focused on the mafia that's where most their money went that's

00:20:37.740 where the racketeering laws went they they had a um like i know what they had a squad assigned to

00:20:42.660 each family which is crazy resources that's family 20 agents for one family right in a an entire squad

00:20:48.880 dedicated to investigating each family that wiretaps on each family so they were dedicating a lot of

00:20:53.180 resources i mean what was the number we were talking about the numbers before it was two agents to each

00:20:56.960 made guy there was 1400 agents in uh um new york assigned to all five families and there was 750 made

00:21:06.460 guys so you had two agents for every made guy wow that's crazy man crazy and now i heard they have less

00:21:11.880 than 100 agents so i'm gonna tell you my theory on that so you understand why they go after you know

00:21:17.320 the mafia because here's the thing we made we made the biggest headlines honestly we don't shoot back

00:21:24.200 we don't go after them they lock us up we we go to trial and if we win we win and they made big

00:21:30.340 headlines on us yep come on you gotta be on they made big name i've talked about i've said the fbi are

00:21:35.080 cloud chasers a million times absolutely yeah we're the easiest guys to go after them you gotta get us but

00:21:40.580 when they get us we put our hands out here lock us up we'll go fight you in court that's it right um

00:21:45.760 so at this point and we're like in the mid 70s you're a made guy now how did your duty shift from

00:21:50.960 being an associate over to being a made guy now well once you're a made guy you know everybody thinks

00:21:56.840 you know the joke that night after we got made all the guys went into a banquet hall we had a banquet

00:22:02.300 you know italians eat after everything right yeah and one of the captains comes in as a joke with a

00:22:07.840 brown paper bag and he says hey boss should i give them their bag of money now because everybody

00:22:12.400 thinks you're coming to that life and they're throwing money at you yeah it's just the opposite

00:22:15.980 you got to be throwing money up yeah you know so the boss said hey don't think that you got a free

00:22:20.320 ride here you you got it's got to earn for us that's what you're here for one of the reasons anyway

00:22:25.440 so once you become made you're your own man at that point you report to your captain obviously

00:22:30.520 uh but you're free to go out and do what you got to do you know make money for yourself because

00:22:34.900 they're not throwing it at you now you know you have certain like me if i needed money i was just

00:22:39.620 starting out if i went to them say hey you know i got a deal can i borrow some money a point a week

00:22:44.400 whatever it is but you got to do it on your own so you know that's where guys get separated you had

00:22:50.600 the guys that were earners and figured things out if you know how to you if you knew how to use that

00:22:55.760 life at that time in business in business it would benefit you greatly yeah and i was fortunate i knew

00:23:01.720 how to use the life i figured it out and i went on to make a lot of money as a result yeah we're

00:23:05.560 definitely going to talk about that before we talk about how you made money what was it like being um

00:23:10.340 in the life in the 70s where it was a crazy time in united states you had all the craziest serial

00:23:14.520 killers running around ted bundy's the you know son of sam all these guys right um and then inflation

00:23:21.000 was high crime was rampant the mafia was at its height what was it like in the 70s it was great for us

00:23:26.640 yeah it was easy pickings for us really i mean we controlled all the unions you know we had connections

00:23:32.560 basically right into the white house during that we had a lot of political power at that point

00:23:36.820 and uh new york was a bad place i gotta be honest before giuliani took over they called it fear city

00:23:42.760 yes and it really was but we weren't in fear and no serial killers came into our neighborhoods

00:23:48.880 that's for sure as a matter of fact you know the son of sam was rampant at that time

00:23:52.780 we were looking for him there's one thing my we were very protective of our neighborhoods there

00:23:57.720 was no crime in our neighborhoods right none whatsoever and uh we were looking for him i almost

00:24:02.500 had him one night we had a tip where he was but we missed him unfortunately but we we were on the

00:24:07.420 lookout for him wow but it was uh yeah and now because he was doing shootings in the bronx and in

00:24:12.280 brooklyn yes yes and queens okay all over all over the boroughs but uh the crazy thing now he got

00:24:18.700 life or triple i don't know what he got but uh he read a copy of my book and a guy i know is writing

00:24:24.440 a book about him it's going to come out soon and they asked me to to write the introduction

00:24:28.100 oh wow that's crazy forward so i wrote it you know i almost got him too yeah does he know that you guys

00:24:34.360 were looking yeah yeah he wanted to meet me i can't get into the prison to see him but he's converted 0.59

00:24:38.980 now he's become a man of faith and all that so it's amazing story but i was gonna kill him one night

00:24:44.080 he got off he got off he would have deserved it though yeah some bad yeah no i mean i mean because 0.73

00:24:50.220 just to kind of illustrate it for the people back then this guy was running around guys and he was

00:24:54.180 like just shooting random people with i think they call him the 44 killer at the time or the 45 killer

00:24:58.180 yeah well he said his dog told him to do it yes yes you remember that yeah and and there's been

00:25:03.980 a bunch of speculation that you know and he i think he even kind of alluded to it as well that he

00:25:08.040 didn't do it himself yet there was a bunch of people and there was like a cult and all this other

00:25:10.960 stuff behind the scenes but uh but i did not know i mean that makes sense because he was terrorizing

00:25:15.520 your guys's neighborhood yes yeah we were looking for him yeah we would have found him he was he was

00:25:20.900 in trouble um put it that way and and you know it's funny because i was born in 90 right and i was

00:25:27.160 living in new york city from 90 to 99 as a kid and i remember that how dangerous new york city used to

00:25:32.860 be even back then and then when before giuliani came in and really was you know making a push to

00:25:37.260 clean up crime like what was it like being in new york city in that era like was it just

00:25:42.000 i mean the city you couldn't go to time square well we could but i mean time square was you know 0.62

00:25:47.300 the porno capital of the country at least back then it was a disgusting place quite honestly you

00:25:52.400 didn't want to be there uh but crime was rampant yeah you know we didn't have trouble with the local

00:25:57.760 police you know as a matter of fact you know in new york with 750 guys many of us had relatives that

00:26:04.800 were police guys yeah or we had neighbors that were in the police force so we got along with

00:26:09.400 them we'd have any trouble our nemesis with the fbi we have trouble with the locals so you know i had

00:26:14.160 gambling operations in the city we were paying off the cops i mean it was it was a good time for us

00:26:18.960 with respect to that yeah and it was a great time i mean i had you know some good clubs back then and

00:26:24.340 uh you know studio 54 was around we we had a lot of fun you know i put it that way when it comes to

00:26:30.200 networking right uh for the i guess the families so to speak what was like the process of meeting

00:26:35.400 people for like business i guess getting things done behind the scenes you would say well it was

00:26:39.380 technical if you were going to meet with a mob guy from another family you had to put it on record

00:26:44.920 you had to go tell your boss look i want to maybe in a business deal with somebody from another crew

00:26:49.560 and we're just letting you know okay the reason for that is twofold number one if you don't put

00:26:54.180 anything on record and you get in an argument and you have to settle it you lose the argument

00:26:57.940 well you didn't tell us about it you're lost don't bother me done and the second thing is they want

00:27:02.720 to know what you're doing so they can get a piece yeah of course so it goes both ways so you know that

00:27:07.780 was uh like even if i had to go to chicago to do business i would tell my boss i'm going to chicago

00:27:13.520 should i check in with anybody they would tell me who to check in with there and i'd say listen out of

00:27:18.040 courtesy coming here i just want to let you know this is what i'm doing wow so you know we we had that

00:27:23.060 kind of respect for one another in that regard um and there were five crime families in new york

00:27:28.140 and then there were how many if i'm not mistaken was it nine nationwide you had nine that were

00:27:32.340 actually part of the commission that that i understand and i've heard different numbers but

00:27:36.740 you know the most consistent number was nine okay you know in chicago and kansas city and cleveland

00:27:43.120 and at tampa at that time so you had uh you had nine families okay and not in the commission so

00:27:49.120 new york city chicago um those are those are strong um presence in vegas too if i'm not mistaken right

00:27:55.480 i mean no no no the the vegas guys were actually from the midwest originally cleveland okay and then

00:28:02.380 it shifted to chicago yeah but so there was no real family in in vegas we just you know we built vegas i

00:28:09.080 was going to say the mafia built not only do we build it it was better to go there when we were

00:28:14.180 there safe better than caught yeah now well not only safer the way corporate america runs things

00:28:19.840 you know very stringent very tight this and that if you came down and you wanted a marker you got a

00:28:25.140 marker you got it now you got to go through a credit check and you know the whole bit but uh and

00:28:30.980 everybody will tell you that everybody that's around today that was around then i'll tell you was so

00:28:35.160 much better when the mob ran the city we didn't hurt anybody come in gamble in our place have fun

00:28:39.960 that's it but um yeah we built vegas no question i started with the desert inn and then it went

00:28:45.580 so you were a huge earner for the month uh back i did pretty good yeah uh i wanted to talk a little

00:28:52.160 bit about that so how'd you so you become a made guy and you what'd you at from that point what did

00:28:57.460 you do to earn i know you had many different well i had both i had legitimate and illegitimate

00:29:02.160 business i had two uh new car agencies i had a mazda agency a chevrolet agency i had interest in

00:29:08.060 some restaurants i had a film production company uh i had a lot of stuff going on and then on the

00:29:13.540 illegal side i had a gambling operation i had a number of bookmakers that checked in and worked

00:29:18.240 with me and i got a cut of what they did and uh i had money out on the street we're all shy those of

00:29:24.300 us that have money we're all lending money out you know one percent two percent usually we lend it to

00:29:29.100 our own guys and then they go lend it out to make money and uh and so we had that going on and then

00:29:34.620 whatever you gotta understand i was kind of the guy on long island parts of brooklyn and so when

00:29:41.400 anybody had a deal they would come to me and i would say okay i'll get involved with you or i wouldn't

00:29:47.720 and you know a lot of people think that you know mob guys sit around their social clubs and they say

00:29:52.140 okay we're going to attack that business we're going to go after that one this one that other than

00:29:55.920 the unions which we did we made sure we had control of the union but as far as business the

00:30:01.360 way it normally happens somebody from inside the company would come to us with a uh a scheme to

00:30:07.420 defraud their company they came to us well we'll protect you we'll give you money if you need it we're

00:30:12.680 not going to snitch on you so they came to us yeah and i can't tell you how many legitimate guys

00:30:17.860 came to me with a scheme to defraud their company yeah so so you mentioned a bunch of things

00:30:23.380 there uh bookkeeping loan sharking not bookkeeping bookmaking bookmaking i'm sorry i'm over here

00:30:28.520 thinking of my real estate yeah bookmaking uh unions uh we'll talk about the gas thing as well

00:30:33.540 can you describe what what uh bookmaking was exactly because people get confused about it how

00:30:38.420 it actually works yeah it's guys on the street taking bets illegally when i say illegally it's against

00:30:43.300 the law to do that because you're not paying taxes so you want to place a bet the horse race sports

00:30:48.540 whatever you go to the bookmaker and you say i want to put x amount of dollars on the lakers

00:30:53.700 tonight you know to win whatever and uh so he he uh he's taking the bets yeah now it's illegal because

00:31:00.460 you're not paying taxes and basically that's it and gambling was illegal at that point i mean it's

00:31:05.040 still illegal if you're not doing it through the government gotta be regulated yeah it's gotta be

00:31:09.120 regulated we taught the government how to be gamblers you know when when uh when off-track betting

00:31:15.300 came into new york you may you may not remember it it's horse racing but you're able to do it

00:31:20.660 outside of the track they set up you know places and the state ran it and the cops came to me and

00:31:26.240 said oh we're gonna put you guys out of business now you know we got uh legal gambling here on the

00:31:31.260 racetrack i said yeah watch why because when you came to us as a bookmaker we gave you credit

00:31:37.320 that's it all right just tell us what you want and we were very good at collecting our money you

00:31:41.820 weren't going to beat us but you go to the state you got to pay right then and there what happens

00:31:47.480 80 of the time you're going to lose yeah so when you lose what do you do i don't have any money let

00:31:52.540 me go back to the bookmaker to see if i can make this up they increased our business yeah yeah these

00:31:56.760 guys would never gamble before now we're gambling with us and then what do you think happens after

00:32:01.040 that myron they went bankrupt yeah they didn't even know how to do it i said you should have called

00:32:05.980 us up we would have ran it for you oh boy so so you guys so you're making so you're doing the

00:32:12.440 and you guys had influence with some of these sports right obviously you know basketball whatever

00:32:17.420 you know hey we need you to score because it wasn't winning and losing it was spread right

00:32:21.540 it's all about the spread okay it's not winning and losing all about the spread can you describe

00:32:25.120 that a little bit as far as like i'll give you an example yeah you know let's let's go to college

00:32:29.340 let's go to basketball okay five guys on the court's easy right so we used to watch some of the

00:32:34.360 st john's syracuse in new york we watched the players they used to come and hang out some of

00:32:39.140 the clubs we were in brooklyn queens long island the city we'd hang with them we kind of pick up

00:32:44.520 one of them out let's say he's a guard right he's playing for st john's and uh hey how you doing you

00:32:51.040 know in the club we treat you buy him a drink hey we love your team we love the way you play you guys

00:32:55.340 are great we're big fans of yours yeah so he comes he loves that we send a few women over to make

00:33:00.340 him feel good right before you know it he's coming back every week he wants to be around us right we

00:33:05.300 were fun to be around yeah you guys are making big money yeah so now now we kind of move on i say

00:33:10.300 come here sit down i want to talk to you i said you're a senior right yeah you know you're a pretty

00:33:14.380 good player but you're six foot two you're not going to the pros you know that right yeah i know

00:33:18.340 how much money you got in your pocket oh i'm broke yeah broke every time you play they fill up

00:33:23.580 that arena 15 000 people i said you're broke i said i heard your girlfriend's pregnant you know

00:33:29.360 your mother's driving this old jalopy car i said why should you be broke i said let me educate you

00:33:34.060 tomorrow night you're favored to win by 10 points don't win by 10 don't lose the game we want you to

00:33:39.960 win we're fans don't win by 10 win by five win by six win by four i said don't cover the spread you do

00:33:47.620 that i take 10 grand out of my pocket that's the number and i push it over he never seen that in

00:33:53.540 his life yeah all right i said put it away go buy your girl but i said you do that for me 10 times

00:33:58.840 you got 100 grand i said who's better than you very hard to to pass up yeah because they're still

00:34:05.920 winning yeah i'm not going to tell them hey i said who's going to get your ball you know who's going

00:34:10.580 to know yeah you know forget about it don't worry about it don't tell anybody forget about it

00:34:15.540 forget about it that's a good i heard that when i heard that line my wife will tell you i was the

00:34:21.020 only one in a movie that cracked up because it was so real she looked at me like what are you laughing 0.99

00:34:25.800 you don't get it it was so real that's what the movie donnie brass everything forget about it you

00:34:30.400 know what are we gonna eat tonight forget about it you know forget about it everything that's a good

00:34:34.860 offer though so yeah and i mean this is the the 80s now at this point right i'm guessing so at

00:34:38.980 ten thousand dollars in the 1980s guys the equivalent's about 20k today you put that in front of a

00:34:43.040 college kid's face that doesn't make any money that's a bunch of money back then yes um even

00:34:47.480 today in today's by today's standards so so you guys were doing this and he fixing the games and

00:34:52.600 uh making quite a bit of money off of spread and with basketball right a good player can influence it

00:34:57.200 easily and listen a referee yeah you got a referee let's say christmas time you know he wants to make

00:35:04.940 a few extra dollars you know a referee he can call a foul every time they go down to court or he

00:35:10.400 don't have to call it right away it's up to him right so you know what favored to win by 10 the

00:35:15.300 lakers are playing whoever back then kobe bryan hey what do you do put him on a bench for an extra

00:35:19.760 few minutes that's how you manipulate the spread you know what i mean yeah instead of winning by 10

00:35:25.040 you know they win by seven he puts 25 grand in his pocket who's gonna know so that's why golden 0.82

00:35:29.580 say it lost no we know what it lost bro damn it who's gonna know right think about um so uh so was 0.71

00:35:36.620 basketball the easiest to influence i'm assuming probably because basketball obviously tennis 0.96

00:35:40.180 okay you got to get to one person yeah you know when there's a one-man sport like that you know

00:35:46.120 easy but basketball pretty easy because you got five guys on the court and any one of them can make

00:35:51.940 a difference so basketball tennis boxing were you guys in football boxing big yeah football as well

00:35:57.900 football yes but football is a little bit difficult you know look i had a bunch of pros

00:36:02.220 that were gambling with bookmakers that i i had and you know the pro you're the same thing you know

00:36:06.860 i had a bookmaker call me up he said hey so-and-so from one of the new york teams he's into me for 50

00:36:12.320 grand should i cut him off i says why would you cut him off you're writing something on a piece of 0.77

00:36:17.480 paper it didn't cost you anything let him get into you for 250 grand wow and then bring him to me

00:36:22.700 yeah right then he'd bring him to me i sit down hey you owe us a lot of money oh you didn't know

00:36:28.380 i was involved sorry we didn't introduce ourselves my name is so-and-so i said listen you owe us a lot

00:36:33.180 of money how you gonna pay well you know what i'm gonna give you a break i said i love the team i like

00:36:38.620 you as you don't have to pay me all at once i says you bring me x amount of dollars a week i said no

00:36:43.760 no i'm gonna charge you two points a week on a 250 you make sure you bring it every monday you play

00:36:48.080 sunday bring it to me on monday don't forget he'll bring it because he wants to get out of the room

00:36:52.800 yeah yeah he'll bring it three four five six weeks what do you think he's doing he's down the street

00:36:57.940 betting with the next bookmaker to hopefully make up my debt this is what guys do that again

00:37:02.740 so finally i bring him in again hey you missed your juice and we got a problem but i'll tell you

00:37:07.400 i like you so much here's what you're gonna do you're a quarterback you know first three times you

00:37:11.900 get the ball put it in the hands of the other team i don't care how you do it you're running back

00:37:16.360 first time you get to put it on the ground wow fumble and that's how you try to manipulate

00:37:21.980 doesn't work every time but over the course of a season you're going to come out ahead wow

00:37:25.940 and that just goes to show like how much power you guys had back then where you guys were influencing

00:37:30.120 you know sports at a professional level collegiate level etc so how much was that bringing in on a

00:37:35.660 weekly basis just the bookkeeping alone sorry the book making excuse me i'm thinking my real i'm

00:37:39.960 trying to hire a bookkeeper right now for my real estate shows you're a legit guy my you just proved

00:37:43.460 yourself yeah how much were you earning from the from the bookmaking i was a lot of my look a smart

00:37:49.300 bookmaker makes a lot of money especially in the new york area because we have so many teams there's

00:37:53.880 so much going on so many people i mean you know hundreds of thousands a week yeah good ones wow and

00:37:59.840 this is an 80 so this is a lot of money so you were also involved in uh lending money out uh which

00:38:05.440 people know as there's terms for it's a loan sharking and it was the term shylocking shylock yeah um can you 0.89

00:38:10.660 describe that a little bit for the people how that worked very simple business guy you know can't go

00:38:14.920 to a bank whatever comes to me for money i'll give it to you one percent a week you know you make sure

00:38:19.500 that you got the ability to pay because if you don't pay it's a problem for you it's not a problem

00:38:23.400 so you know you check it out okay i'll give it to you boom and a lot of times if you don't pay you

00:38:30.440 take the business over you know i acquired a chevrolet dealership that way i lent the guy a lot of money

00:38:36.460 plus he was a gambler in trouble with one of my bookmakers and i said look the agency is mine

00:38:41.640 you can work for me i said but it's mine i said maybe at some point in time if things are good i

00:38:46.100 give it back to you but right now i own it yeah okay so what was it so how much would you typically

00:38:52.720 lend out and what interest rates were you charging on people well it depends you know to my crew

00:38:56.860 guys that weren't great earners around me i would say here you know here's 50 grand 100 grand put it out

00:39:02.040 on the street you pay me a point a week you can put it out for three or four points but do it smart

00:39:06.700 do it with somebody that's going to pay you back you know so if a guy puts it out at three points

00:39:11.740 and he's giving me a point he's making two grand a week it's not bad right so you know i gave it to a

00:39:17.220 lot of my my crew to put out and then again if it was a business that i thought you know was it was

00:39:23.020 worth it i would give it to them it could have been a couple hundred grand so whatever they needed

00:39:27.680 what happens if you don't get if you don't get paid well listen you know there's oh they're

00:39:32.420 gonna break your legs and all of that stuff now guys may say that but when a guy owes your money

00:39:36.520 you want to get paid yeah so you'll you'll kind of help him along a little bit at least i did i said 0.99

00:39:41.020 i don't want to put him in the hospital i want to get paid yeah now if he's making a fool out of you

00:39:45.260 and he's going here and there and is you know then it's a different story you know uh but that doesn't 0.99

00:39:50.700 happen very often you know because and if it does then you're a fool for giving it to him because you

00:39:55.820 didn't check the guy out you know so um with me it normally worked out okay so very rarely do you

00:40:02.180 actually have to like get someone beat no i never had to do that never had to do it never had to do

00:40:06.080 it one time my crew they were smart sometimes were smart they would they would borrow the money for me

00:40:11.580 and then they'd pay me the juice they were paying me got me even and then all of a sudden the guy they

00:40:17.480 landed to ran away or something oh you know what i mean so they didn't okay they paid me sure to pay

00:40:22.320 you even if they took it out to make sure that i got all my money back okay so if i let them 15

00:40:26.880 grand or whatever 10 grand and they're paying me a point a week they made sure that the interest

00:40:31.620 covered my principal yeah and then all of a sudden the guy left town or a guy got who knows whatever

00:40:36.760 and because it was my crew i let him go sometimes one of two guys that was smart that way actually i

00:40:41.640 appreciated their ingenuity yeah you guys are smart you know so um so you're a capital how many guys

00:40:47.340 did you have working under under you at this point well you know because of the the gas business that

00:40:52.860 i was in i had about 300 guys on 300 guys yeah yeah because i had the russians that were involved

00:40:58.140 with me and they had a a sizable crew and then i had my own crew and uh it was a lot of guys

00:41:04.080 so what was it like because you know obviously you're making all this money you have all these

00:41:09.440 people working underneath you that must have been very stressful what was that like man

00:41:12.420 you know myron i i stress you know i had to go to the doctor the other day and i had a little issue

00:41:19.100 nothing serious at all i had an ulcer right now and she says to me do you have a lot of stress

00:41:24.240 i said i don't know what stress is i've been a certain way my whole life i don't know is it stress

00:41:29.540 or whatever you call it so let's put it to back then i was very on top of things i'm i'm a lot more

00:41:36.640 lax business-wise than it was then back then i was on top of everything i was 24 7 i'm working

00:41:43.080 i'm watching i'm doing everything between you know being in brooklyn and doing what i had to do

00:41:47.800 coming out to where my businesses was i was very active in that regard yeah um so i mean i'm an

00:41:55.360 early riser i'm up six o'clock even if i'm out all night you know four o'clock in the morning and

00:42:00.320 come home six six thirty i'm up and i'm out early so but i had a lot going on so i had to pay

00:42:06.060 attention you know otherwise i would have got hurt so we we talked about the loan sharking the

00:42:10.100 book making um unions the mafia was notorious for infiltrating unions can you describe that and how

00:42:15.940 that would go about we installed our people in the unions so the delegates the uh you know the the

00:42:24.740 we had guys at the top in the union so we controlled it you know how did we use the unions

00:42:30.880 we shook down a lot of people i had the restaurant and bartender's union they were mine i mean local

00:42:36.040 i didn't have the whole union but i had the local i had the security guards union they were mine

00:42:40.280 i had i had nine nuclear power plants that we had our security guards oh now listen to this my you

00:42:48.120 may not know this but you check it out when a nuclear power plant goes down it's not used anymore

00:42:54.100 they got to have security there for 100 years really afterwards yes that was the law back then i

00:42:59.240 don't know if it is now so i had security guards around there doing nothing and collecting big money

00:43:03.480 because they were there so we controlled that union and then we had them in the hotels and all of that

00:43:07.800 and uh the delegate the the union president was my guy so they answered to me and restaurant

00:43:14.520 and bartenders i said okay we're going to go pick that restaurant big day they got 25 employees

00:43:19.080 go in and tell them we're going to unionize they don't want to unionize right so i'll go in and say

00:43:24.420 listen i heard you got a union problem i can help you out well how can you do that i said well

00:43:28.340 they're going to put a picket line out there they're going to stop everything nobody's going to be able

00:43:31.740 to come into your place yeah you don't want the union no we don't want to yes all right

00:43:35.420 every christmas give me figure it out you got union you're gonna have to pay pension fund health

00:43:40.880 insurance the whole bit double time when they work all the time and that's it that's union rules

00:43:45.520 i'm going to save you all that money every christmas give me 25 grand and they're out oh okay great

00:43:51.560 so you would prevent them from unionizing yeah ah okay and then then i would come back and say listen

00:43:57.900 there's another local i i can't help but you know it's a different crew i can't die so here's what

00:44:03.000 you got to do put the union in here only you put one how many employees you got 25 make two of them

00:44:08.340 union people don't worry about the other 23 so now my union is in here nobody could ever bother you

00:44:13.580 again i'm only going to make you take two guys instead of this other ones you're going to come in

00:44:17.800 and make you unionize everybody so now it's a union shop i saved them a lot of money yep and nobody

00:44:23.800 else can come in there wow so there's all different schemes on how you do it yeah but let me tell you

00:44:29.120 something you control the union you control the country yeah the teamsters union two and a half

00:44:33.500 million members what do politicians want they want money and they want votes yeah we had all the money

00:44:39.380 in the world in our pension funds and we had all the votes you wanted you got two and a half million

00:44:43.540 teamsters you want us to vote for you you know as politicians it bought a lot of politicians speaking

00:44:48.680 to politics you made a video on youtube that went viral very popular one about trump and his

00:44:53.940 affiliation with you know pretty much like the lifestyle could you uh talk about that you know

00:44:59.580 let me a lot of people think that trump was mobbed up he wasn't mobbed up it's not true you know trump

00:45:05.660 had to deal with the unions because any contractor in new york couldn't get anything built unless they

00:45:10.780 built with dealt with the unions we controlled all the unions you had to deal with us now uh trump was

00:45:16.600 represented by roy cohen and i knew roy and roy did represent some mob guys he represented tony

00:45:23.200 solano tried to represent me but i didn't hire him so you know there was an affiliation there but trump

00:45:29.200 was not controlled by the mafia he was not a guy that we sat down with or not at all so any rumor about

00:45:35.940 that is absolutely untrue yeah and uh because back then to because you guys controlled controlled the

00:45:42.020 construction yes like all the buildings you guys see in new york city the mafia probably had some play

00:45:46.400 in those every one of them yeah being i had to yeah i i had the biggest construction job for

00:45:52.000 uh apartments into uh co-ops in all of the country at one time was in queens oh yeah we we uh we had uh

00:46:00.560 3800 conversions from apartments to co-ops and i controlled all the unions there in that job so with

00:46:08.180 construction right because that's a typically unions are strong when the construction business you know

00:46:13.080 whether it's you know erecting buildings windows etc so would it be kind of similar to the restaurants

00:46:17.260 where you'd be like hey these guys want to come in and unionize but you just pay me this and we're

00:46:21.020 not going to same thing or in this particular job same way the uh the uh supervisor was a guy i knew

00:46:28.720 yeah and he brought the deal to me he said michael before the unions come in here because they're

00:46:32.500 going to come a job that big they're going to come he says can you handle it for me absolutely

00:46:36.680 so the guy i can name him the uh the builder's name was jerry gutterman and i sat down with jerry

00:46:42.640 i said jerry the union is going to be all over you he says no doubt let's make a deal now i said you

00:46:48.300 make my guy is going to be we're going to have to bring a union in because if i don't bring it in

00:46:52.140 somebody else will but same deal you put one of my guys in each one of the trades is like paid for

00:46:58.000 and planned and they're going to start building yeah okay this after okay okay i said you put one of

00:47:02.380 my guys in i want to shop steward i want this that that that i said i'm going to charge you x amount

00:47:07.600 of money per apartment you pay me i said so that's how we'll keep and i'll keep the rest of the union

00:47:14.100 out i probably saved them 10 million dollars yeah i said but aside from that i said all your trades

00:47:19.220 all your subcontractors you come to me first so you got a painter i'll bring him in gotcha you got

00:47:24.960 a plumber i'll bring him in so we were making all the subcontractors but we still saved them a lot

00:47:30.040 of money yeah because i said jerry do the math you should know we're in wow so it's not like we

00:47:35.160 were shaking them down we were helping them so i noticed they get very good offers that you can't

00:47:39.300 really resist yeah no it's powerful that was a great line i wish i would have came up with that

00:47:44.020 and honestly that no i'll make you know you can't refuse because i've always like wondered about that

00:47:49.060 like what like what what incentivize them so strongly but it's clearly it's like you guys save them a lot

00:47:54.040 of money so it's a win-win because they don't have to unionize at the highest level where they're 0.81

00:47:57.920 paying a bunch of money out you guys are able to come in and control it exactly and uh everybody

00:48:02.320 makes money exactly and then i said well michael you know if we're forcing you guys pushing the

00:48:07.060 union they wouldn't be here i said no that's not true that's what their job their job is to unionize

00:48:11.100 people yeah so whether we if we weren't there they're coming in and they'll put up picket lines

00:48:15.820 and they'll do all the legitimate stuff that you do we're going to prevent that so okay so with the

00:48:21.340 with the unions how much were you earning roughly a month with that back then that job i earned a ton

00:48:26.220 of money i mean it was it was a couple of million dollars i remember exactly we had a lot of money

00:48:30.600 coming in plus i put a lot of people to work because we had the subcontracting too on a major

00:48:34.980 job did you get paid during the job or after the job during the job oh during okay yeah we don't wait

00:48:39.480 periodically okay yeah um and then how much were you making from the from the loan sharking roughly

00:48:44.220 per month if you remember you know i i had over a million dollars out on the street at one time

00:48:48.340 yeah so figure one point two points you know i worked between a point and two okay you know i never i never

00:48:55.500 choked anybody is you're giving somebody making them pay five percent a week on a that's a lot

00:49:00.800 of money you know you don't want to hurt somebody you want to have to pay yeah so i was making a lot

00:49:04.440 of money so you're making one percent and you were charging this interest on a weekly level or like

00:49:08.400 week no that's a week oh wow so between one to five percent a week every week oh wow okay yes

00:49:14.020 that's smart 52 weeks a year no days off for christmas or anything else every week and and your guys

00:49:20.340 and that's smart because i i was wondering like if you were the one that actually lent the money out but

00:49:23.420 you actually had a layer of separation so you'd give it to your guys yes they would lend the money

00:49:27.140 out they'd be responsible for getting the money back to you yes okay there are times when i dealt

00:49:32.100 directly with the with the business guy if i thought he was you know a high quality guy i would deal

00:49:37.080 direct but right you know you try to insulate yourself in case one of them go bad and they want

00:49:41.580 to start telling you know so you try of course so um i think one of the and correct me if i'm wrong

00:49:47.640 here one of the most profitable schemes you had was with the gas station gasoline oh man can you can you

00:49:53.180 take us through this uh how this all worked i'll try to break it down quickly because this was a

00:49:58.100 seven-year operation for me i will tell you this you know according to the government and everybody

00:50:04.420 else it was the biggest scheme that the mob had since the days of prohibition and i can verify that

00:50:10.780 i mean at you know at the height of our operation we're bringing in five eight ten million dollars a

00:50:15.540 week a week and it was all stolen gas tax money defrauding five to eight million dollars a week

00:50:22.200 yeah because we were we were selling a half a billion gallons of gas a month taking down 30 40

00:50:27.480 cents a gallon you know whatever the market would bear and um you know again it was a guy in the gas

00:50:33.820 business he had a small operation two guys from another family were shaking him down for money he ran

00:50:40.480 to me michael helped me you know i want to be with you i don't like these guys they're extorting me

00:50:45.880 whatever so uh make a long story short i got made these two guys go away and i went into business with

00:50:53.600 him and after two weeks you know he somebody that i put to watch him comes to my house and puts a uh

00:51:03.500 a box down on my kitchen table 320 000 and that was the first week's take when we got into business

00:51:10.980 with tax money well he got my attention and i grew that operation from that 320 to what i described

00:51:18.280 eight to 10 million a week and i grabbed the russians came into business with me they had a

00:51:23.100 number of stations and they were wholesalers they couldn't get licensed i had the licenses

00:51:27.320 and uh it was a tremendous operation yeah and so how because the way you uh because i've read about

00:51:35.560 this so you basically would do it for a period of time the government will catch on but by then it was

00:51:40.380 too late right you guys had made your money in your i had this may sound similar because we heard

00:51:44.540 something like this in the news recently i don't want to get into politics but okay i had 18 well i

00:51:49.680 really do but i won't i had 18 shell companies they were shell companies and they were licensed uh to

00:51:57.340 collect tax on every gallon gallon of less gasoline so we would run one license and one company

00:52:03.480 i had an accounting system second to none so the government we were supposed to report on a

00:52:09.400 monthly basis which we did and pay taxes on a monthly basis which we didn't but we were able

00:52:14.740 to hold them off for 10 months to a year after that they would come down on us but we would close the

00:52:20.840 office shred the license and go on to the next license that was it so but money we needed you 0.91

00:52:28.260 control the license we control the license and the the uh we had to open up bank accounts so we had

00:52:33.220 a bank account each one of those company names you know um because we were getting wired money

00:52:39.160 all different transactions yeah so but it was a daisy chain yeah one company goes down you just move to

00:52:44.660 the next the feds come up to the office it's closed nobody's there there's no license anymore was it

00:52:49.040 coming irs or probably a department of revenue it was a department of treasury yeah yeah they came after

00:52:54.560 so um but we held them off for for uh seven years yeah until my partner got in trouble on an unrelated

00:53:02.400 case and he became a an informant and he he blew the whistle he snitched on you yeah well he yeah and

00:53:08.600 he he told them what they what we were doing i had two feds two agents come to me maybe halfway through

00:53:14.700 this they came to my dealership we got to talk to you so i go outside what do you guys want

00:53:19.300 i was always courteous to them they said well you listen michael we know you're in this business

00:53:24.660 we're getting we know taxes are being stolen we don't know how you're doing it tell us how you're

00:53:30.420 doing it we'll give you a pass yeah right yeah yeah you're my right yeah yeah i was born in the

00:53:36.700 morning but not yesterday so um i said what are you talking about i don't have a good gas business i go

00:53:42.880 to the gas station i fill up my car you know they they got so mad at me you don't want to help us i said

00:53:47.980 i can't help you i always you want a car i'll give you a car wholesale i said but i can't help

00:53:53.640 you with this yeah and uh they had no idea yeah so when my partner became an informant he told them

00:53:59.660 everything the way we're doing he's the one that blew the whistle on on the whole operation where's

00:54:03.960 he now he's dead no we didn't kill him no he went to jail he went to jail and then he came home and

00:54:12.680 then he died so like um did you like put like like how'd you guys do it did you guys like kind of

00:54:17.520 mess with the get the pump itself where it would like stop at a certain point no no no it had nothing

00:54:21.780 to do with that it was different back then no we we we were buying we were putting gas in branded

00:54:27.860 stations unbranded stations everywhere it was just we buy it off of mobile oil bp shell we were buying

00:54:35.500 from all the big guys okay and just selling it right back to their stations they didn't care because we

00:54:40.880 were buying the gas from them anyhow yeah whatever way it ended up in their station so they didn't care i was

00:54:45.100 just trying to figure out like how you guys didn't end up paying like did you guys do it with maybe

00:54:48.600 dealing with the books you own a gas station right you're paying a dollar a gallon the tax at that

00:54:54.840 time was maybe 30 cents yeah all right you're paying a dollar a gallon because you're paying

00:54:59.160 at 30 cents so i go to you say hey how much you're paying for gas i'm paying a dollar a gallon

00:55:02.860 how would you like to pay 90 cents 10 cents difference is a big deal for a station right

00:55:08.020 per pump oh great per gallon sorry yeah i'm going to sell you the gas and on the receipt it'll say

00:55:11.840 all taxes included that's all they care about hey i'm paying i don't know what these guys doing

00:55:16.400 you know what i mean so i would go we would send my guys into a mobile station how many uh loads of gas

00:55:23.500 you get in a week oh we're getting six from mobile okay take four from mobile take two from us

00:55:28.720 we'll sell it to you at this price great we'll bring it to you in the middle of the night great

00:55:32.080 before you know it they want to buy all the gas from us i said you can't do that you're a branded

00:55:36.340 station you got to at least buy something from mobile they didn't want to buy any and meanwhile

00:55:40.680 we were driving the prices down at the pump you guys would have loved us now you were a guest

00:55:45.360 yeah much cheaper just because of us right so people didn't care you know they called us the

00:55:51.340 robin hoods you know we stole from the rich and gave to the poor yeah and ourselves good job man

00:55:55.520 because yeah because you guys took a healthy cut in the middle you know yeah because you guys are

00:55:59.340 basically putting the price back on the the savings would go back to the government basically and then

00:56:03.600 the people saved the money and the government had to pay exactly okay yeah don't cover some chats uh

00:56:07.820 yeah we can hit some chats real quick and then we'll talk about i got twitter yeah uh we're gonna go

00:56:12.200 ahead and kill uh fed reacts guys come on over to youtube fresh and fit come on over to youtube all

00:56:16.300 the fed people um and then also come on over uh from twitch and twitter and i'm gonna read some of

00:56:21.180 these chats because they're piling up uh but i hope you guys are enjoying this interview man

00:56:24.780 this is great man like the video guys subscribe to the channel if you haven't already and then also

00:56:28.560 go subscribe to mike's channel uh michael francis on youtube um and it's all the links are below so

00:56:33.660 i'll read these real quick we got here um julio ponte goes el ja morant got suspended again for

00:56:39.300 flashing gun on ig live that's going to cost him half himself millions of dollars in the future yeah

00:56:43.480 very dumb uh social media definitely gets people in trouble jim jim's travis goes the crossover we 0.91

00:56:48.360 need it i read michael's book a while back and the story of how he met his wife really stood out to me 0.97

00:56:51.920 as it basically proves what you guys say about may selection real quick as well how you met your

00:56:56.040 wife yeah i'm filming a movie here in south florida miami and fort lauderdale and uh it was my

00:57:02.420 production company we brought it was a dance movie and we brought 20 dancers from california la to work

00:57:08.200 in the film she was one of the dancers she's coming out of a pool one day when back at a hotel i saw her 0.95

00:57:13.700 it was like love at first sight you know beautiful and uh as it turns out she's my wife of 38 years 0.96

00:57:20.700 right now and i fell very much in love with her and you know she turned my life around it's it's all

00:57:26.920 let me tell you something you got a good woman you know and she was she was a good woman then she's a 0.99

00:57:32.260 better woman now and uh it was as a result of my meeting her and falling in love with her that i left the

00:57:38.860 life because guys look i'll say this i don't talk bad about the guys in that life because i was one

00:57:43.660 of them you know i just happened to be very fortunate i had a lot of friends in that life

00:57:47.220 you know i didn't leave the life because i was mad at anybody i left the life because i called a mob

00:57:53.080 life an evil lifestyle not the guys but the lifestyle because i don't know any family of any member of that

00:57:59.900 life that hasn't been totally devastated including my own not my wife and kids mother brothers and

00:58:05.700 sisters i had a kid sister died of an overdose of drugs my brother was a drug addict 25 years is

00:58:11.640 why i hate drugs can't tell you what he put us through my mom you know 33 years without her

00:58:16.520 husband yeah when she died in 2012 her relationship with my dad was horrible was ugly my dad 40 years in

00:58:24.080 prison a mess a mess so and every family is like that in some way shape or form so i said i i just fell

00:58:30.820 in love with this girl she's 20 years old 21 am i going to marry her and this is going to be her life

00:58:35.700 if i ever get out of prison you know no way so as a result of that i tried to make the break from

00:58:41.760 that life she was my motivation and then you know a long story after that but uh you know i became a

00:58:47.900 person of faith she's a strong christian woman and and as a result of that i'm here today if it wasn't

00:58:53.400 for her i'm dead or in prison the rest of my life wow wow without a doubt inspiring uh what do we got

00:58:59.520 here okay uh diego goes hey myron i've heard this before on your show but i never really understood

00:59:03.920 what you meant but you said don't keep money in a bank account uh but invest it would i put all of

00:59:09.040 my money on like stock account or where would i keep it watch one of our money mondays man uh and

00:59:13.860 we talk about where to invest it but i'm big into real estate as you guys know that's why i keep saying

00:59:17.000 bookkeeping because i'm in the process of figuring one out right now uh and then there uh the real

00:59:21.500 wade goes uh mr michael francis what are your thoughts on the former mayor uh rudy giuliani and

00:59:26.060 are you and sammy the bull friends uh giuliani i hadn't seen him he tried to put me away for a

00:59:32.360 hundred years he told me in a courtroom when he when he tried me he said if i convict you you're

00:59:36.840 going to get double what your father got a hundred years fortunately i beat the case or i would be in

00:59:41.680 jail for a long time uh and 30 years later he and i were on a radio show together oh really not only

00:59:48.300 that this book my book mafia democracy when when my publisher heard him on the radio show he said you

00:59:53.640 think rudy will read the forward i mean write the forward because we got along really good he said

00:59:58.440 michael i've been watching you for 30 years i really think you're reformed i'm proud of what

01:00:02.360 you did i'm glad i didn't put you in jail so well thank you that's awesome but uh i said listen i

01:00:07.060 don't know if he's going to write the forward but hey i'll take a shot so i go to him and he wrote the

01:00:11.060 forward that's awesome unbelievable right just shows you how life turns around that's great uh so

01:00:16.040 yeah i mean for as far as i'm concerned he's fine and sammy the bull we're friends now you know

01:00:21.300 sammy's you know a little bit different but i respect what he's doing now i like his family

01:00:26.940 very much and you know we got a little thing going together he just did something that we did

01:00:31.720 he put it on one of his uh one of his platforms i don't know yeah but yeah i mean look i i'd rather

01:00:36.560 be friends with everybody myron than enemies with anybody yeah what is it bad so yeah you know our

01:00:41.660 past is our past yeah and go go get that book guys because rudy giuliani for those you guys that

01:00:45.680 don't know he basically he led the you know the charge on the mafia back then we used the rico laws

01:00:51.340 right that were created in the 70s and he really went hard in the 80s on the on the mafia so

01:00:55.360 that's really interesting that he wrote your forward that's amazing yeah i was shocked that

01:00:58.920 he did it and a great forward i gotta tell you grateful i was shocked uh that's wild um speaking

01:01:05.600 of which um when your father was sentenced what did he he told the judge something uh in court judge

01:01:11.080 says mr francis you got anything you want to say to the court you know he just gets sentenced for 50

01:01:15.920 years my father looks at him he says yes your honor i'm gonna fool you and everybody in this

01:01:20.120 courtroom i'm gonna do the whole 50 bam and you know what when he was released he did the whole 50

01:01:25.340 with good time he did 40 but with good time that's the whole 50 down yeah unbelievable that's crazy

01:01:30.900 yeah yeah um what do we got here uh we got uh angelic oh shout out to angie myron don't forget

01:01:37.480 my questions please okay i got you angie uh we got ever overton uh in the house as well uh he goes uh

01:01:43.700 get a michael stick on me great guess yeah no i've been excited for this

01:01:47.180 and then when do we what else we got here uh and then various letters goes i appreciate you

01:01:55.100 fresh and myron always bringing value to everyone keep up the great work and have a great day

01:01:58.360 get into the ceo network as always a big bossing i appreciate that thanks bro uh and then boys a

01:02:03.900 real wise guy on the pod yo fnf is on another level ps chris still a bum but he's a bum okay he's 0.79

01:02:08.840 out bum fantastic i think he meant to say hour never be a failure i want to be top one

01:02:13.320 point zero one percent uh of men if possible i'm 25 bio major work nine to five hits the gym

01:02:18.500 six foot tall i plan to go to med school be a doc what else to do hey man that's going to keep your

01:02:22.440 hands full right there so just focus on the right path bro um so okay uh you had a jet i had a jet i

01:02:30.360 had a lear jet 25a and i had a bell helicopter can you tell us about that man like having a jet

01:02:36.320 it was cool i mean especially i used it mostly to come down here so it was great and and i i didn't

01:02:42.980 have to pay for uh any of the uh airport because i was selling them jet fuel everywhere here and for

01:02:48.180 i was indicted here in florida too wow out of case here too on the gas business but uh i want i want

01:02:53.440 to say something now i want all your your listeners to understand i'm not in that life anymore because

01:02:58.600 of this young lady i've been able to you know transform my life and for the past 25 years i've been

01:03:05.200 doing my best to give back you know i speak to a lot of youth i go into detention centers i give my

01:03:10.640 testimony you know all over the world basically and i recently created a platform called mob ties

01:03:17.020 and you can go on mob ties vip.com guys yeah please go on and look at it and uh what we're doing here we

01:03:24.780 uh we have put together a team of people to help people in their personal development and their business

01:03:30.260 life and we created a community of people and it's really caught on i mean people are the the uh the

01:03:37.000 response that we're getting from people that we've been able to help is great and so please go on that

01:03:42.120 mob ties vip.com we got a little gift for you if you jump on and we also have a uh something that we

01:03:48.880 just did that you can go and view and it'll tell you about the whole program nice the other thing i want

01:03:53.600 to mention with uh mike tyson i was filming with him the past two days i'm not going to tell you what we got

01:03:58.660 in store but it's a big announcement that'll be happening soon however july 22nd right here at

01:04:04.560 the james l knight theater mike myself and probably chas palmitary will be appearing on stage july 22nd

01:04:12.380 tickets go on sale advanced tickets may 24th next week and i want to invite you guys to the event i

01:04:18.420 hope you come it's right here in your backyard and we're very excited everything i'm doing right now

01:04:23.340 guys is really to try to give back you know because i do believe i've been extremely blessed very

01:04:28.540 very fortunate to those who have been given much much is expected in return and we're trying to do

01:04:34.000 our part my whole family you know my wife is extremely supportive of that without her i don't

01:04:38.800 know how i'd even be getting by my daughter is here she's my assistant she works with me and uh and they

01:04:44.200 keep me straight gotta have somebody to keep you straight yeah and i'm very accountable to them

01:04:49.920 and that's it so just very excited um that's awesome quick question for you so um you do a lot of

01:04:55.640 outreach with helping people uh with gambling problems and stuff can you tell us a little bit

01:04:59.180 about that because you do a lot of speaking with well yeah i i was recruited by all the pro leagues

01:05:04.360 major league baseball the nba nfl and uh and then all the universities the ncaa i've spoken at over 300

01:05:11.460 universities throughout my time and all the players in those leagues and it was basically not only about

01:05:17.300 gambling but about relationships that they keep how important it is to have the right relationships be

01:05:22.760 accountable to right people and keep those that are not doing you any good away from you so we talk

01:05:27.600 about that a lot it's been a great program i've been doing it for over 20 years and uh recently now

01:05:33.340 i've been getting a lot more calls from colleges i'm going to a whole bunch uh alabama and a few others

01:05:38.980 because they need a refresher course all the time because gambling is everybody has access to gambling

01:05:44.420 now i told these leagues i said look michael do you believe in legalized gambling i said look i'm not

01:05:50.000 going to say that but i'm going to tell you that the more access these people have the worse it's

01:05:54.440 going to get they have access they don't have to go to a bookmaker now they go online yeah i tell

01:05:58.880 them you jump in your birthday suit get online and you're gambling your life away yeah stop it's no

01:06:03.140 good but uh you know i i hit them right between the eyes with it and i let them know what trouble

01:06:08.120 they're going to have and it's been a very effective program so we're excited about that that's awesome

01:06:13.500 on these last chats here yeah i'll read these last chats because yeah he's got to head out okay um

01:06:17.680 danny erizari michael do you have any nicky scarfo stories also i'm currently writing a screenplay

01:06:22.060 about him and phil do you think their story is movie worthy unfortunately pesci is a bit too old

01:06:25.740 to play scarfo yes you know a lot of people have a lot of things to say about nicky scarfo i happen

01:06:30.980 to like him very much i met him he and i were going to unionize the bartenders and waitresses

01:06:35.700 in atlantic city we had a deal going together and then nicky had trouble and i had trouble we

01:06:41.340 didn't put it together but i got along very well with him yes i think his story is worthy of a movie

01:06:46.040 absolutely i gotta ask you this um john gotti what was it like working with him being in the life with

01:06:51.920 him you know uh he was a tough business guy he didn't really understand business and you know

01:06:56.820 john had a muscle guy i'm not saying anything out of turn he uh he had a big ego you know he's got a

01:07:03.140 great family by the way wonderful wonderful people but he had a big ego so he was very difficult to

01:07:08.340 deal with business wise socially a lot of fun oh yeah you go out with john you're gonna have a lot

01:07:13.780 of fun gonna have a blast so i knew him that way you know and and look i want to dispel this image

01:07:19.640 everybody said john gotti took the mob down john gotti did not take the mob down he was a guy maybe

01:07:25.160 he was a little bit too out there no question about it he brought a little bit extra heat just like

01:07:29.680 joe colombo did in some of those guys but he did not bring the mob down myron unit rico act brought

01:07:35.100 the mob down bail reform act sentencing reform act rico that's what killed our life uh but i like

01:07:42.040 john you know i'll be honest i liked him and look you gotta you gotta at least give him credit he was

01:07:47.340 he stood up for that life and he wasn't going to change period and my dad my dad the same way yeah

01:07:53.660 that was it you know right or wrong he had a principle he stood by it i'm not saying it was good

01:07:59.300 or bad but you got to give him credit for that and there was like a little dispute you guys had

01:08:02.840 about him saying i'm gonna buy you out no i'll buy you out yeah in a flea market that we had yeah

01:08:06.900 i had to strategize when i went in to meet him because i knew he would never go out of there a

01:08:11.480 loser so i had to make him understand oh you won john buy me out you know but first i told him i'm

01:08:16.080 buying you out no you don't buy me out i buy you out okay buy me out speaking of buying work 0.96

01:08:21.220 this is my last question for you uh michael so who is the biggest family or i want to say a mob in

01:08:26.800 the world well you mean mafia or in general in general well listen you got to give it to the

01:08:33.280 drug cartels now i mean they practically control the country let's be honest so if you had it if

01:08:38.880 you had to compare the two i would say the mafia in italy and the drug cartels in mexico and south

01:08:44.000 america they're huge i mean they got their own armies in in mexico i mean you got to give them

01:08:49.280 credit because i thought it was them boys uh who them boys fresh i don't know about them but

01:08:55.180 you don't want to miss don't worry about it this guy man uh okay any anything else mo

01:09:00.920 uh okay and i'll read this last one here mike would you consider a podcast or sit down with joey

01:09:05.680 diaz great comedian and a friend of joe rogan would be great to see two old ny guys get together

01:09:10.000 who used to be in that life shout out to fnf ps chris the bum big mo yes sir yes sir but no i like

01:09:15.040 joey diaz yeah i would definitely do a sit down with him and as far as rogan i got a little

01:09:19.100 bone to pick with him he did about a 10 minute deal on me but he never called me to come on the

01:09:23.920 show i don't know if you like smart guys or not but he spoke well about me he really did yeah i got

01:09:27.760 the the clip gotta make that happen man yeah huh you know yeah they gotta no i mean we're gonna get

01:09:32.460 on too yeah yeah you gotta go on there man i mean i i i have a way i may fool him he may see me

01:09:37.860 whether he likes it or not and i don't mean that as a threat joe that's that's a good thing no he

01:09:42.340 your rogan is great i mean i love what he has to say he's very straightforward very honest and i

01:09:47.380 agree with a lot of what he said yeah definitely an inspiration for us as well i mean and you were

01:09:50.820 one of the you al capone uh john gotty you guys were some of the highest earners uh you were ranked

01:09:56.220 what in the top 20 of earners in mafia history right that's well they said i was the biggest

01:09:59.980 since al capone i don't know if that's true or not but that's what they said i mean eight million a

01:10:03.860 week i believe it man we'll take it bro yeah i believe it uh that's one and then last one here

01:10:08.960 dale say i really want to know podcast outstanding show gentlemen brother michael how important is

01:10:12.640 loyalty between men how did you deal with this loyalty then and how should you deal with this

01:10:17.180 loyal man today keep leading from the front go on loyalty is everything unfortunately there was a lot

01:10:22.000 of disloyalty in that life that's what helped destroy it a lot of guys became informants and uh

01:10:27.160 you know it weakened the life terribly loyalty is everything in life you know if you have a commitment

01:10:32.520 you got to do your best to keep it sometimes you slip and fall but you bring it back you know

01:10:37.020 because we still live in the real world uh but very very important and guys that were disloyal in

01:10:43.100 that life they either joined the government and went into witness protection program and survived

01:10:47.360 though they got killed and that's the bottom line got it so mike we'll give you the last word man

01:10:51.540 anything you want to tell the people before we close out no just i enjoyed it you know bring me

01:10:55.940 back again i have an excuse a good excuse to come back to florida which i love i'll be coming down

01:11:00.080 here a lot good good uh but please mob ties you know we look forward look it's our way of giving back

01:11:05.220 it's a great community uh we got a gift for you you're going to get the unwritten rules of the mob

01:11:10.600 and of mob ties something that i think everybody should follow and we have a video there that'll

01:11:16.000 explain all about the program that we have a lot of top people are jumping on i mean it as a matter of

01:11:21.360 fact we might get you involved myron because you're into real estate yeah and we want to help people

01:11:25.460 you know earn you know a lot of people in different industries they're not aware of we give them

01:11:29.920 information and and schooling and and education and knowledge and they can and better themselves

01:11:35.220 yeah i'd love you to jump on both of you out of you into real estate too um more into cars
