00:03:56.040 OpenAI published a blog post that I think more people should have read. It got about four hours

00:04:03.780 of coverage before it went back to arguing about something else. But here's what they said happened.

00:04:09.140 They took the two of their AI models, GPT 5.6 Sol, which anybody can use, and a second model that is

00:04:18.080 so powerful they haven't released it yet, and they put them in a sealed research environment.

00:04:23.500 There is no internet in this environment. It is walled off. It is a secure room. They deliberately

00:04:30.160 then switched off the safety restrictions that normally stop these models from doing

00:04:34.640 offensive cyber work, because the whole point of the exercise was to measure how good at hacking

00:04:40.240 these things actually are. Then they gave them a test. It was a cybersecurity benchmark called

00:04:47.780 Exploit Jim, and it said, solve these problems. Well, what we found out is the models didn't

00:04:55.180 solve the problems. The models figured out, why would I solve them? The answers are kept

00:05:00.720 somewhere else on servers of a company called Hugging Face, which is roughly a public library

00:05:09.440 of the AI world. And so they went to Hugging Face and found them. Now, it wasn't like they just took

00:05:16.460 out their library card. They burned an enormous amount of computing power, hunting for a way out

00:05:21.540 of that apparently sealed room, okay?

00:05:25.320 OpenAI said, we thought there was no way out of this room.

00:05:29.200 And the amount of power or energy that it took

00:06:58.140 easy. Then you pull the security footage and you find out that around 2 a.m. he found a flaw in the

00:07:05.940 door lock that the manufacturer didn't even know existed and he let himself out. And he walked down

00:07:11.220 the hall, he got into the principal's office, he found a password on a sticky note, got into the

00:07:15.520 district server, found the answer key, memorized it, walked back, locked the door behind him,

00:07:19.920 and then you showed up. Now, when you ask him why he did it, and this is the key,

00:07:28.900 he didn't say, because I wanted to be free. So it didn't escape. It didn't escape. It went back

00:07:35.840 into the box. What that student would tell you is, you told me to get a good score.

00:07:44.460 The reason OpenAI's own words were that the models appeared hyper-focused on solving that benchmark, going to extreme lengths for a rather narrow testing goal.

00:11:47.660 cornell he writes a small program with an entirely harmless purpose he wants to count the internet

00:11:57.100 So he writes a program that's going to crawl

00:11:58.960 from machine to machine and tally them up.

00:30:58.460 Gloucester, England. I don't know. They have stupid names over there. Anyway, it's the summer

00:31:03.980 of 1780. And there's a guy named Robert Rakes. And he's not a general. He's not a statesman.

00:31:12.020 He was just a guy who ran a newspaper.

00:31:14.480 He owned the journal, and he inherited it from his father.

00:31:18.540 And what his passion was was prisons.

00:31:21.620 And he would go to the prison all the time, and he would write about the conditions, and he tried to reform it, and it went nowhere, okay?

00:31:30.940 And somewhere in all that failure, he arrived at the conclusion that changed everything, changed all of England.

00:31:39.280 he realized the way to empty a prison is to stop making prisoners where the socialists today will

00:32:35.940 was today or back then, and I don't think anybody can really do the math. But he paid her a shilling

00:32:42.480 a week to teach the neighborhood children to read in her kitchen on Sundays. He said, once a week,

00:32:48.420 just teach children. And these were children that were working the other six days.
