00:16:45.540 you uh really great to have you on team agriculture by the way who knew this is uh this is incredible

00:16:52.240 Yeah, I know. It's been kind of a wild thing to have this conversation with the president last week and have him connect with it and call you and say, let's get this done. And I can't wait to hear what it is. And also, I think it's important to say what it isn't, because the disinformation, the cartel that is against this is relentless with their lies.

00:17:15.480 well that's right first of all a couple quick top points um really great to be on i've been

00:17:21.560 such a fan of yours for a really long time so uh very very special to me number two this president

00:17:27.800 has been and i believe will arguably go down in history as the most pro rancher pro farmer president

00:17:34.120 uh in american history at least in our lifetimes number three that what has happened over the last

00:17:40.080 just decades frankly glenn it's not you know a lot of bad things happen under biden a lot of bad

00:17:45.020 things happened under Obama, but this is decades of massive consolidation in agriculture, offshoring

00:17:51.700 of our food supply in agriculture, the loss of hundreds of thousands of farms and ranches.

00:17:57.660 There is no national security. There is no freedom unless we can feed and fuel ourselves. And I,

00:18:03.780 you know, that's why this isn't frankly an existential question. And then the final kind

00:18:07.780 of top point I'll make is that you're 100% right that the president, you know, after talking to you,

00:18:13.780 which I loved, got very interested.

00:18:16.640 We've talked about it at length over the last year and a half.

00:18:19.240 But really, your conversation, I think, brought it to the fore.

00:18:22.340 And because he had made some comments and some decisions on a short, temporary import

00:18:28.240 in a beef, all of America was kind of watching on what we're doing with ranchers and beef.

00:18:33.720 And so he said, Glenn, you're right.

00:18:35.940 Brooke, you're right.

00:18:36.740 I want to, you know, deconsolidate.

00:18:39.940 Let's get back to the way it was 20, 30, 40 years ago.

00:18:43.520 where people could use more of a regional processor, a locally owned processor, and the

00:18:48.700 fact that two of the big four are owned by foreign entities, this is astonishing. Now, does it mean

00:18:54.500 there's no more inspection? Of course not. America has the best food inspection system in the world.

00:19:02.540 I mean, you know it's true when we had a lettuce issue. That was, of course, FDA had blueberries

00:19:07.860 recently, but I think we're so used to our food just automatically being safe, and that's because

00:19:14.200 of the thousands of food safety inspectors we have in this country and around the world,

00:19:19.860 and that will continue unabated. That's a really important point.

00:19:23.660 So it's not about the inspections of the food. It has always been about the way things work,

00:19:31.580 the way the law is written, if I want to sell my beef across state lines, I have to have an

00:19:39.480 inspector that is USDA, most likely if I'm living in a state like I sell my cattle in Idaho, I got

00:19:47.140 to go to Denver to sell my cows. I can't get them processed really in my state because I don't

00:19:51.660 process enough meat, so I don't have the small person. The people can't go and process their

00:19:58.500 beef in our state and then sell them to the local grocery store, which, you know, I don't

00:20:03.700 understand the people on the left. They're four of these big, huge conglomerates. And then on top

00:20:08.900 of it, they understand farm to table. How do they not understand that same concept with beef and

00:20:15.220 chicken? How do they not get that? It's right. And a couple of things on that. And by the way,

00:20:20.700 we have a whole series of announcements all week. One of the five we're announcing today

00:20:27.440 is on that exact question.

00:20:30.260 Interestingly enough,

00:20:31.700 several states participate in a program,

00:20:34.180 only 11 states, by the way,

00:20:35.420 not your state,

00:20:36.720 but about 11 states.

00:20:38.040 Georgia just got added in the last few weeks.

00:20:42.900 they actually can sell across state lines

00:20:45.140 because the states have entered

00:20:46.840 into agreements with USDA.

00:20:49.200 So we are doubling down on that.

00:20:52.000 Hopefully talk to your governor.

00:20:56.880 to get these other states on board. But we have inspectors in every single state. We just have

00:21:01.940 to enter into agreements immediately that will allow, for example, your beef to sell across

00:21:07.720 state lines. But that's just one of about 100 things we've been doing, we're going to be doing

00:21:12.540 to make this easier for our ranchers and to provide a better market for them.

00:21:16.420 And you also, are you making it easier for people to build? I mean, right now,

00:21:22.140 what is it 85 or almost 90 percent of all beef is processed through these big four

00:21:28.320 it was not like that 20 years ago it's never been like this this is a massive monopoly can you make

00:21:36.020 it easier are you going to make it easier for people to be able to build processing plants

00:21:42.020 in their own states and get state inspections yes so this is uh i think this is a really key

00:21:49.920 component of all of this. And by the way, we're talking big four processors, packers today,

00:21:54.960 but this is true in fertilizer. This is true in seed. This is true in almost every level

00:22:01.900 and layer in agriculture. And what's really another conversation for another time, Glenn,

00:22:06.600 but just to put this into context, our farmers continue to struggle year over year, right?

00:22:11.420 The federal government injects money just for their survival. But meanwhile, all of these big

00:22:17.660 ag companies, a lot of them foreign-owned, continue to have a stronger and stronger bottom line.

00:22:23.800 So the minute we announce a new injection of funds, a bridge payment, a damage payment,

00:22:32.360 whatever it is, the price of the trucks go up, right? The price of the tractors go up.

00:22:37.420 The price of seed goes up. I mean, this is what happens when you don't have

00:22:40.800 a fully functioning market. So obviously today we're talking about that non-fully functioning

00:22:45.860 market in it no loser a massive massive issue so to answer your question on the big four yes what

00:22:55.040 we have done over the last year is really invested in small and mid-size packing so that a co-op a

00:23:02.800 group of farmer owned we've got some great examples of this by the way around the country that are

00:23:08.000 building this out with the help of usda grants and loans and we'll be announcing a bit you know

00:23:13.300 more a bigger pot for that today and and there is an opportunity here i'm sure you're tracking that

00:23:18.600 a few weeks ago tyson announced the closure of three of their plants they're shifting a lot of

00:23:24.040 their processing some other plants one of them in texas and other places but that opens up glenn

00:23:29.720 about 20 of the market for smaller and mid-sized companies to come in american owned to rebuild

00:23:38.900 and to catch some of that market that is now opening up.

00:23:41.820 So as tough as that decision was, that announcement was,

00:23:45.260 I actually think the long-term implications are very positive for this industry.

00:23:49.980 So if people understood how beef was purchased,

00:23:54.260 and I'm not going to explain it here because it's just not worth it,

00:23:56.800 but on this grid system with no transparency,

00:24:00.380 I mean, it is honestly like if you were selling your house

00:24:03.440 and these big four companies were buying all the houses

00:24:06.900 and they bought two houses and then said,

00:24:09.300 we're going to base all of the prices on those two houses that we just bought.

00:24:13.060 And you'd be like, well, wait, that's not a free market.

00:24:14.840 What are you talking about?

00:24:16.380 That's the grid system.

00:24:17.580 That's how they buy beef.

00:24:18.740 It's absolutely anti-free market.

00:24:22.000 Is there going to be transparency on that?

00:24:26.340 And on when they're closing their kill floors?

00:24:30.140 Because that's another thing.

00:24:31.720 I can send my beef to be auctioned and then they can say, you know what?

00:24:35.280 we had to close our we had to close our uh kill floor so we don't really need it so we're gonna

00:24:40.800 pay a lower price and you never know yeah good good luck to you guys yeah so this is a major

00:24:47.140 part i'm on my way to nebraska actually as we speak in the car and uh really giving a state

00:24:53.380 of the cattle union if you will those are my words a state of the union on the cattle industry on the

00:24:58.780 rancher uh industry on what's happened to our ranchers how we rebuild the herd we're at a 75

00:25:04.620 five-year low after an all-out war against cattle by the left over the last 20 years,

00:25:10.760 what we need to do to do that. And of course, transparency is probably one of the key components

00:25:16.780 of all of that. Senator Ricketts and Senator Fisher will both be there, the governor of

00:25:20.900 Nebraska. Nebraska, of course, the number one beef state. And while, you know, there's a lot

00:25:25.460 of things we need to do, we need to incentivize young ranchers, we need to keep private property

00:25:29.420 rights, you know, absolute in this country. We need to open up grazing in the West. We need to

00:25:35.180 move some of the overused cropland to grazing land. We need to bring the cost of fertilizer

00:25:39.040 down. Ranchers use fertilizer as well. We need to break up the big four, bring more competition. 1.00

00:25:45.120 But to your point, transparency in what these ranchers are getting paid, what they're having

00:25:52.480 to pay, that has been lost in the current system. And while the ranchers are, you know, making a

00:25:57.380 pretty good per head uh pay right now payout right now that's very unusual right for decades they

00:26:04.480 were at the at the bottom of the of the pile and now they're just starting to catch up again

00:26:09.500 which is really important so transparency is very very important so can we'll be making more

00:26:16.120 announcements on that one more time because this this i don't know cattle ranchers association or

00:26:21.720 something that does not sound like any cattle rancher i have ever uh encountered have come out

00:26:28.380 and said again this is all about dangerous meat do you know anything about these people that are

00:26:34.360 leading this campaign and just one more time can you just set the record straight on what this means

00:26:43.200 for safe for food safety well yes and again i appreciate there are we have just the usda

00:26:51.560 i think close to 10 000 inspectors nothing is compromised on inspection uh the food especially

00:26:59.580 are i mean listen america you're part of this uh grows the best highest quality most impressive

00:27:07.520 most in-demand beef in the world in the world and that is why you see with make america healthy

00:27:14.600 again our big movement there you know one of the announcements today is going to be changing the

00:27:19.660 way the government procures its food and its beef military hospitals school lunches which is under

00:27:25.820 me at usda uh bureau of prisons that putting the american rancher and the beef directly from

00:27:33.100 american ranches on into the government system you know we're making a lot of changes right now

00:27:38.620 but none of that is possible unless americans have full confidence in the safety of what they're

00:27:44.780 eating and you can't do that without inspectors and and so you know you can you can have some

00:27:50.800 scare tactics from some from some you know little shady or smoke and mirrors front groups you and

00:27:55.980 i've been in the conservative movement long enough to understand how that works right uh but at the

00:28:01.440 end of the day, this is the most impressive, most robust food inspection safety system in the world

00:28:08.000 and none of that will be compromised. How long before this all goes into effect and how long

00:28:15.220 before the people at the supermarket feel these changes or impact? Well, you know, as you know,

00:28:22.320 Glenn, this is a very complicated supply chain. When we were dealing with the cost of eggs,

00:28:30.000 right a year and a half ago you hatch a chicken within three or four months that chicken's laying

00:28:34.700 an egg and we're off to the races and so you've seen right the cost of eggs come down 30 40 50

00:28:41.000 percent listen a rancher retains a heifer that heifer takes two years to get to the point where

00:34:27.020 on social media the president announced what he called the biggest oil deal in world history

00:34:31.620 here's what it is in plain english okay the united states has entered an agreement with venezuela

00:34:38.780 and the acting government a private company is getting created and the united states

00:34:45.920 takes a stake in it alongside with a private operator whose name has not yet been released.

00:34:51.620 That company is granted the right to develop Venezuelan oil fields for 100 years. America

00:34:59.240 gets 55% of what comes out of the ground. We have an ownership share, plus the right to buy the oil

00:35:07.300 at cost instead of the market price. You want to know how we're going to fill our strategic oil

00:35:12.960 reserves this is it now the number attached is 65 billion barrels of proven reserves if that holds

00:35:23.820 that new company becomes the second large largest corporate holder of oil on earth only behind the

00:35:31.940 saudis the president says it more than doubles american reserves and costs the taxpayers

00:35:38.460 nothing. How's that possible? Well, let me explain. Now, Venezuela's side is supposed to be roughly

00:35:46.920 $100 billion in private investment and something north of $200 billion in their treasury. That's

00:35:53.440 the deal. Now, here's the part that decides whether any of this matters. There are two

00:35:59.480 things in this country called reserves, and they are not the same thing. The first oil reserve is

00:36:06.880 the oil that's in our ground. That's geology. It's a number a survey writes down in a book after he

00:36:12.300 looks at rock, okay? 65 billion barrels in Venezuela is that kind of number. It's a promise

00:36:19.420 about the future, and a good one, because Venezuela is sitting on more proven crude oil than

00:36:24.740 any country anywhere on planet Earth. The second kind of reserve is the strategic petroleum reserve.

00:36:33.100 That's not geology.

00:36:34.860 That's a pantry.

00:36:36.620 Okay?

00:36:37.480 Along the Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana, there are these natural salt domes, and they're buried underground.

00:36:45.020 And what you do is you pump water down, the water dissolves all of the salt, and you're left with this giant cavern the size, honestly, of a skyscraper turned upside down.

00:36:57.380 We did that, and then we fill it with oil.

00:37:00.280 Now, Congress authorized it in 1975 after the Arab embargo that left Americans sitting in gas lines wondering how the most powerful country in the world just ran out of oil.

00:37:11.700 And we started filling it in 1977.

00:37:14.840 It holds 714 million barrels.

00:37:18.960 In 2010, it was full.

00:37:23.580 726 million barrels of oil.

00:37:26.460 Last week, it was announced we're down to 289 million barrels.

00:37:32.680 That's the lowest it has been since November of 1982, back when we were still filling it for the first time.

00:37:39.560 And it was on its way up.

00:37:42.460 It's on its way down now.

00:37:44.780 We started the year at 415 million barrels.

00:37:48.540 In March, when Iran choked off the Strait of Hormuz, the president ordered 172 million barrels released alongside other nations that were doing the same thing.

00:37:58.200 Every nation is in this, even China, in the same place we are with oil reserves.

00:38:03.840 OK, real oil, the pantry kind of oil reserve.

00:38:07.300 Now, the floor is around 70 million barrels.

00:38:09.900 Below that, you can't physically operate the caverns, and the pipe runs out of them, runs about 4.4 million barrels a day at maximum.

00:38:21.780 That's about 13 days from a presidential signature to a truck at your station.

00:38:26.760 That's how long it takes.

00:38:28.460 So you set the two numbers next to each other.

00:38:31.220 65 billion barrels under Venezuela that we just purchased, 289 million barrels under Louisiana.

00:38:42.960 One of them is a lease.

00:38:45.960 The other is fuel.

00:38:48.640 You cannot put a 100-year contract into a salt dome.

00:38:54.120 Now, we've been here before, and this is an important lesson to learn.

00:38:58.160 There was a Frenchman named Pierre Poivre.

00:39:03.280 His name literally means Peter Pepper.

00:39:06.080 So I'm going to call him Peter Pepper.

00:39:10.080 Okay, so Peter Pepper picks a pepper.

00:39:13.460 In his time, nutmeg was the big thing.

00:39:17.120 Nutmeg came from a handful of tiny islands in the Dutch East Indies and nowhere else on the planet.

00:39:23.740 And the Dutch owned all nutmeg. 0.96

00:39:25.460 And they controlled the trees. 0.97

00:39:27.380 They controlled the price, and they burned the surplus stock just to keep the price high.

00:39:33.600 Don't you wish?

00:39:34.340 Because I could cut nutmeg out of my life like that.

00:39:37.540 Don't you wish that was our big thing?

00:39:39.200 Anyway, they wanted a monopoly so badly that when they made a deal with the British, they let New Amsterdam go and keep a nutmeg island the size of a golf course.

00:39:57.380 so peter pepper thought a monopoly on a plant was an absurd thing to accept so he went and he stole

00:40:07.280 it and he lost his right arm to a cannonball years before he tried and failed for two decades

00:40:14.580 his first seedling died in the ground at port louis uh and uh and he was he had convinced somebody

00:40:23.820 that he had killed, or somebody had convinced him.

00:40:29.600 I can't remember exactly.

00:40:30.660 Anyway, people thought that he had killed that plant on purpose,

00:40:33.580 but he kept going.

00:40:35.360 In 1770, he finally got healthy nutmeg and clove seedlings

00:40:41.100 out of the islands and onto the soil where he was.

00:40:46.680 The monopoly didn't end.

00:40:48.080 He finally had the trees, but it didn't end

00:40:50.040 because nutmeg doesn't care about your shipping schedule.

00:40:54.400 It takes the better part of a decade before it gives you a single nutmeg.

00:40:59.920 When the first one finally ripened in the garden,

00:41:03.860 the colony threw a festival.

00:41:06.080 But the festival ended

00:41:07.380 because the seedlings were just seedlings.

00:41:13.400 Today, the little island of Grenada shows so much nutmeg

00:41:18.220 that they put it on the flag, which brings us to Canada.

00:41:23.660 Canada right now sends about 90% of its crude to the United States,

00:41:28.940 roughly 4 million barrels a day, and supplies like 60% of everything we import.

00:41:34.300 It's heavy, it's sour crude out of Alberta, the oil sands,

00:41:38.660 and our Gulf Coast refineries are built specifically to refine that.

00:41:44.380 That's why when Washington imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian furniture and dairy and plywood, it deliberately left crude oil off the list.

00:41:56.060 And it's why Prime Minister Carney, after walking away from the table on the 21st, started reminding audiences out loud how much energy comes from Canada.

00:42:06.880 Okay, he didn't know that we were about to do the deal with Venezuela.

00:42:11.080 Does it take Canada's leverage away?

00:42:15.820 On paper, yes, in about a decade.

00:42:20.160 Venezuelan crude is heavy and sour, the same barrel that Alberta sends us.

00:42:26.520 It is the one other place on earth with that much of it, and that's a genuine substitute, and Ottawa knows it.

00:42:36.460 So, Carney has just been handed a very short leash.

00:42:40.140 you got like 10 years and i know that's a long time to us but in the grand scheme of things

00:42:45.260 that's not in the room this week it's not going to make a change venezuela is only pumping about

00:42:59.660 the 90s to stand in for canada it has to triple that and that requires rigs and upgraders and

00:43:08.260 pipelines at a hundred billion dollars i mean these are the seedlings the seedlings are not

00:43:13.940 nutmeg you don't win overnight and notice which direction the spr cuts the strategic oil reserve

00:43:22.180 or a petroleum reserve the normal answer to a supplier squeezing you is to open up the pantry

00:43:28.380 and wait him out but our pantry is at 40 of its capacity the lowest in 44 years and there's a war

00:43:35.220 on you know empty reserve does not strengthen our hand it hurries us okay then there's a thing that

00:43:45.340 canada is certainly saying to itself is how long is that contract going to last you because it was

00:43:50.120 signed with an acting president installed after we took the last one out a hundred year lease

00:43:55.760 is only as good as the government that granted it and the one after that now if we're smart

00:44:03.880 And I think we are. We made a very good deal with Venezuela. This is very good for them. Now, will it be in 50 years? I don't know. But everybody that's an energy executive is looking at Venezuela and they're asking what this looks like five years, 10 years, 20 years down the road.

00:44:24.120 And that's not a partisan question. That's due diligence.

00:44:28.680 Now, the honest read of this deal is this oil does not have to come out of Saudi Arabia or cross the Strait of Hormuz.

00:44:40.900 It doesn't need a carrier group to escort it.

00:44:44.520 Anything that reduces the number of choke points between us and a tanker is worth having.

00:44:49.880 If you're going to be dependent on somebody, a neighbor beats an enemy all the way on the other side of the world.

00:45:03.260 So this argument is real, and it doesn't require anybody to lie about the calendar, but the calendar is the whole thing.

00:45:35.960 The Dutch didn't lose the nutmeg trade the day the seedlings left.

00:45:40.140 They lost it the day the trees bore fruit, and this is not going to bear fruit for maybe 10 years.

00:45:59.220 We should never negotiate with a harvest we don't have yet, and we don't have it.
