00:34:39.980 daddy i didn't have if it wasn't for your daddy i'd be in jail and we're missing those guys

00:34:54.320 they are they're comfortable in their own skin um and they just they just walk differently i find

00:38:17.480 artist and i didn't even know it and um and you know you were kind of my you were you were kind of

00:38:23.900 my foil and um and my number one enemy and so um when it was when it was time to uh to get on the

00:38:33.960 plane and go meet glenn beck and the glenn beck show um it was it was a very surreal experience

00:38:39.220 for me right because you have changed what woke you up um you know having a front row seat to it

00:38:47.460 and i didn't have a a like like one big moment it was kind of like spidey senses that started um

00:38:58.060 really in about 2011 um because i had gone through my teacher training in 2008 and just within the

00:39:06.140 three years um things really started to shift fast and i was and i was in the types of schools

00:39:13.680 where we had a lot of outside experts coming in to try to like you know save the world and and

00:39:21.800 and fix the system and as early as 2011 they were bringing in these pilot programs from fancy

00:39:31.060 universities that had us talking about stuff uh in the classroom that even me being at that time a

00:39:40.560 very liberal liberal you had a proponent of uh everything against what you were saying

00:39:46.720 it didn't feel right and and so it's like and my unique experience there which relates to kind of

00:39:56.340 what we're going to talk about today i hope is that you know i'm a white guy and i'm in front of

00:40:04.060 classrooms primarily of hispanic and black children and i'm teaching u.s history and i'm i'm kind of being

00:40:15.180 nudged nudged is a nice way to put it to to to preach victimhood and it just didn't feel it didn't feel

00:40:26.460 right and i i i didn't do it and and i framed my history lessons as a story of america as a story

00:40:38.820 of survival america as a story of achievement um and that included everybody in this country regardless

00:40:46.040 of ethnicity or skin color well it was great to work with you on monday we're um i was cutting some

00:41:53.940 tell the story of america's growth and expansion westward and so from boone to davy crockett to

00:42:15.220 kind of take our readers on a trip that geographically covers the country um but then also

00:42:24.720 chronologically covers the country and does so in a way that is pretty exciting yeah and i mean i think

00:42:32.200 i hugged you when you said bass reeves was in the book um because bass reeves i mean some people say

00:42:38.080 it's this is all just legend nobody knows and i i don't think it's true but uh somebody some people

00:42:43.840 say that bass reeves is uh the uh the inspiration for the lone ranger um uh and when i found bass

00:42:52.940 reeves uh because i was doing you know i was painting a painting of the lone ranger and uh i wanted to

00:42:59.640 learn more about and i saw this name bass reeves is possible and i started looking it up and i'm like

00:43:04.020 how did i know oh this guy this guy is fantastic and he was a u.s marshal and tell his story a little

00:43:10.260 bit well so he was born into slavery and he was um he was owned by a well-to-do family

00:43:19.520 in east texas and when um when the civil war broke out he was uh he he was brought along

00:43:29.020 with um with the the the young men of that family and interesting of his upbringing which is so condemning

00:43:37.620 of the institution of slavery is that his like the the family that owned him permitted him um to use 0.68

00:43:46.180 firearms but they didn't permit him to learn how to read which says a lot about the importance of

00:43:51.680 education it sure does but in that childhood where he was brought up with guns he became an expert

00:43:59.120 marksman and um always having a an american spirit inside of him i would say that when given the

00:44:09.260 opportunity to break free from slavery he did so and did so on the way to fighting in the civil war

00:44:16.020 and then he escaped into um the you know the bandit lands of the indian territory

00:44:22.360 and while he was there we don't i mean he was literally off the grid and so his time in the

00:44:30.720 indian territory is legendary but he must have picked up or at least intensified his skills because

00:44:36.500 when the civil war ended and he then you know and slavery was abolished and he was allowed to

00:44:43.500 permitted to join join american society he did so as a u.s marshal and racked up

00:44:52.360 statistics that were just like unheard of yeah he was the guy who always got his man always got

00:44:59.920 no matter how long it would take if he was on your trail you were going to jail or die and we're

00:45:06.140 talking like hundreds of dudes that he went after and was successful in getting and an incredible man

00:45:12.000 of integrity one of the people that he actually had to bring to justice was his own son thank you for

00:45:16.920 and and so um you know we at prager u kids aim to teach what isn't being taught and you know you

00:45:28.000 said you didn't know that much about bass streams i didn't even know who the guy was

00:45:30.940 yeah and i'm a u.s history teacher and so one of the cool things about this series is kind of uncovering

00:45:45.480 the sixth story is john sutter uh who was the owner of a mill where gold was discovered uh i believe in

00:45:52.640 california and this guy um you know when you learn about the the the rush to california you see the kind

00:46:02.580 of american that we now say just doesn't exist the the you know now we're like oh i don't know that

00:46:08.440 seems really hard if you want to be an american you know you you should read john sutter um because

00:46:15.440 it's optimistic and yet stubborn and it's just we're going to get it we're going to do what we know we

00:46:23.480 can do correct oh most definitely and and we we strategically picked john sutter because we wanted

00:46:30.980 to have an immigrant tale um as part of the series and he was born in switzerland and made his way

00:46:38.860 to america as a young man and our our our theme of our john sutter book is pretty much failure

00:46:46.600 because that guy dreamed big and fell on his face over and over again but had the gumption and had

00:46:54.600 again that american spirit to get up and try again so the name of the book and i if you
