01:01:23.000 improved by liberal democratic

01:01:24.100 capitalism, and yet they hate

01:01:25.180 it.

01:01:25.700 But if you take God out of it, I

01:01:27.640 mean, Stephen Pinker just wrote

01:01:29.160 on the Enlightenment, I don't

01:01:30.000 know if you've read his book, but

01:01:31.760 he writes, you know, 300 pages on

01:01:33.860 the Enlightenment, and not once

01:01:36.040 mentions the French Revolution.

01:01:39.120 And that is because there was no

01:01:41.600 God in there.

01:01:42.920 And I understand, and I applaud the

01:01:47.340 way you wrote this book and your

01:01:48.860 intent there, but how do we get to

01:01:50.940 a point where we can say to

01:01:53.980 people, look, you don't have to

01:01:55.340 believe in God, but it's these

01:01:57.460 kinds of institutions that have

01:01:59.940 helped man understand the power of

01:02:03.880 the individual and to be able to

01:02:07.140 navigate without a big state.

01:02:10.360 Look, I agree with you entirely, and

01:02:12.320 God kind of sneaks back in towards

01:02:14.120 the end of the book, because, first

01:02:16.440 of all, I think the Pinker book is

01:02:17.880 very impressive, but one of the

01:02:19.100 things I think he gets wrong is he

01:02:20.560 treats the Enlightenment like it was

01:02:21.760 all one thing.

01:02:23.620 And sort of like as Mike Myers'

01:02:25.060 dad, and so I married an axe

01:02:26.340 murderer, says, when it comes to

01:02:29.500 Enlightenment, if it's not Scottish, 0.97

01:02:31.400 it's crap.

01:02:34.180 The French Enlightenment has lots of

01:02:36.760 problems to it, in part for the

01:02:37.960 reason that you say it left God out

01:02:39.860 of it.

01:02:40.720 And one of the most challenging, if

01:02:44.360 not debilitating turns in Western

01:02:46.160 civilization, has been the loss of the

01:02:49.300 common acceptance of the idea of God

01:02:51.500 fearing.

01:02:53.040 Because character is that thing you do,

01:02:55.860 I mean, it's sort of a Hallmark card

01:02:56.920 thing, but character is that thing you

01:02:58.680 do, are the things you do and how you

01:03:00.840 behave when nobody is watching.

01:03:02.900 And when we lived in a society that was

01:03:04.520 God fearing, you always felt like God

01:03:07.060 was watching, and that kept you from

01:03:09.960 giving in to the worst parts of human

01:03:11.740 nature, we now live in this romantic

01:03:13.560 moment where we're told the highest

01:03:16.560 source of authority, the highest source

01:03:18.520 of authenticity, are our inner selves,

01:03:21.860 our gut instincts.

01:03:23.480 We appeal to our feelings, not to facts,

01:03:26.000 and we turn inward.

01:03:27.740 And when you do that, that's how you get

01:03:29.380 all these riots of assininity on

01:03:31.160 college campuses, where kids say, I

01:03:33.200 don't want to debate, I want you to

01:03:34.420 honor my feelings.

01:03:36.460 And when your feelings are the ultimate

01:03:38.500 arbiter of morality, you can get away

01:03:40.320 with almost anything.

01:03:42.760 Well, it's why I think Nietzsche is so

01:03:46.280 misunderstood when he said God is dead.

01:03:48.740 That wasn't a proud proclamation, that

01:03:50.720 was a warning.

01:03:52.460 What are we replacing God with?

01:03:54.140 And we're not replacing God with anything

01:03:55.900 other than feelings.

01:04:26.020 So how do we reach those people?

01:04:29.100 It's a challenge, and part of the book is, part

01:04:33.100 of the point of the book is trying to reach

01:04:34.520 out to those people.

01:04:35.260 And I think one of the things that I keep

01:04:37.640 trying to impress on people is that, you

01:04:39.000 know, most of our political problems are

01:04:40.920 downstream of our cultural problems, of

01:04:42.820 our social problems.

01:04:44.420 And one of the things I think is fascinating

01:04:46.360 about particularly kids on elite college

01:04:49.760 campuses, right?

01:04:50.740 I have a lot of respect for kids who go to

01:04:53.640 community colleges because they typically are

01:04:55.660 paying their own way and they take it more

01:04:57.360 seriously and they don't have a lot of time

01:04:59.420 for the stupid stuff.

01:05:01.120 But at these elite schools, which I talk to

01:05:03.120 all the time, this is the first mass

01:05:05.360 generation of kids that have basically had

01:05:09.260 their entire lives micromanaged, where they've

01:05:14.420 almost, you know, again, this is sweeping

01:05:16.220 generalization, but you have these kids who've

01:05:19.200 never really had to sort of adjudicate

01:05:21.240 interpersonal conflict themselves.

01:05:23.300 Some coach or teacher or parent gets in the

01:05:26.300 way.

01:05:26.960 And when you have kids like that who don't,

01:05:29.060 you know, who've never been bullied, you know,

01:05:30.700 zero tolerance for saying anything mean to

01:05:33.060 anybody.

01:05:34.000 You have these kids who are very smart and very

01:05:35.800 driven, very ambitious, but also ill-equipped

01:05:39.960 to deal with anything that's shocking or

01:05:42.600 troubling or new.

01:05:44.180 And that's why, you know, they need trigger

01:05:45.620 warnings.

01:05:46.480 That's why some of them actually need written

01:05:48.040 contracts before they go on a date because they

01:05:49.860 don't know how to, like, you know, deal with a

01:05:52.120 member of the opposite.

01:05:54.440 And so one of the problems that we've got is

01:05:57.180 we've got this mass generation of elite kids

01:05:59.360 who think they're entitled to run the country.

01:06:02.420 And in some respects, it's understandable because

01:06:05.960 way we organize our society.

01:06:08.800 But they, and they live the most custom-made

01:06:12.320 lifestyle we've ever seen any, you know, these

01:06:15.540 kids get everything they want on demand.

01:06:19.400 And they live iPhone lives, but they vote for a

01:06:25.360 And they, you know, and one of the things that

01:06:28.460 drives me nuts is on college campuses, there is

01:06:32.220 this weird notion that being liberal is rebellious.

01:06:37.460 And I always like to ask these kids, I'm like, well,

01:06:39.460 wait a minute, let me understand this.

01:06:40.480 So your teachers are liberal.

01:06:43.420 You know, your teachers in high school are liberal.

01:06:45.720 Professors are liberal.

01:06:46.500 The administration is liberal.

01:06:47.540 The publishing industry is liberal.

01:06:48.540 The media is liberal.

01:06:49.440 Hollywood is liberal.

01:06:50.140 Music industry is liberal.

01:06:53.020 And you think you're sticking it to the man by

01:08:38.280 And a lot of the problems on the right, a lot of the

01:08:41.140 reasons why Trump was elected and why I'm sympathetic

01:08:44.440 to a lot of his voters and a lot of the arguments for,

01:08:47.100 you know, electing him, is that there was this

01:08:49.260 profound backlash against the way the left was

01:08:53.220 operating, against the way Hillary Clinton was 1.00

01:08:55.620 operating.

01:08:56.800 And there's this sense that we needed a guy to fight

01:09:00.020 for us because the old establishment wasn't getting done.

01:09:03.200 And there's a lot of merit to that.

01:09:05.300 And meanwhile, the left and the media, they're responding
