01:47:33.600 from from higher ed there there have been decades of court decisions that say well not really there's

01:47:39.140 a difference between being a university professor and being a k-12 teacher so uh you have academic

01:47:45.440 freedom basically the courts have recognized this at a university you really don't have it for k-12

01:47:50.920 lots of court decisions have said that we as teachers are basically higher speech that it's school

01:47:56.460 boards that get to decide what the curriculum is so it's the school board that has to stand up and

01:48:04.260 say no or yes to these these kinds of things that's right and and it was just an interesting heritage

01:48:12.480 foundation poll which is what kind of inspired me to look into this they did a poll of school board

01:48:18.020 members and they found and this may surprise you that 70 percent do not agree with the idea that the

01:48:24.060 school curriculum uh should promote the view that our founding ideals of liberty and equality were

01:48:29.440 false when they were written that was the idea from the 1619 project in the new york times

01:48:34.120 uh an even higher number disagree uh that american history should be quote reframed so that children

01:48:40.140 will learn that the u.s has been tainted by slavery and racism now i have to be clear like if a school

01:48:45.540 board says nope that's the way we want to teach history uh well there's 14 000 school boards in this

01:48:50.640 country districts uh you know the courts and the constitution recognizes their right to to to you

01:48:55.980 know teach it that way but the point is someone has to say no we will teach it this way no we will

01:49:00.540 not teach it this way and it's not individual teachers okay so you're saying that two-thirds

01:49:06.120 of parents say they don't want it how do the school boards feel about 1619 yeah no interestingly

01:49:13.060 the school boards are even more uh quote conservative about this than parents parents more evenly

01:49:18.840 divided but about 70 percent of school boards uh reject the premises uh or appear to uh reject the

01:49:25.020 premises according to the heritage foundation poll that the 1619 project puts forward and that makes

01:49:30.900 a certain amount of sense i mean these are elected officials so they're probably not eager to to touch

01:49:35.700 this controversy whatsoever uh but if i'm a parent and i'm concerned about this then probably the first

01:49:41.320 thing i'm going to do is is go to my local school board and say hey wait a minute how do we teach

01:49:45.440 this here are our teachers authorized to use this uh the 1619 project curriculum yes or no because one

01:49:52.600 of the things that's important to discuss this gets a little bit inside baseball but it's kind of

01:49:56.460 critical even though school boards have been recognized as having the ability the authority

01:50:01.760 to dictate curriculum there's a huge amount of gray area all the data that we have suggests that

01:50:08.020 teachers don't necessarily uh if they have a curriculum at all they don't necessarily teach it the way it

01:50:13.760 was written the vast vast majority of teachers uh sometimes for very good reasons adapt their

01:50:19.520 curriculum sure materials you know put from outside sources that's a standard practice and it's not

01:50:24.920 always nefarious it's often usually for very good reasons i personally want our teachers to be more

01:50:30.220 empowered to be able to to connect uh with the students in the way they see fit let's let's let them

01:50:38.700 bring their own personality the problem is is that we have teachers and tonight um i'm exposing a document

01:50:47.120 dump 800 documents not pages files 800 files of of uh curriculum that is being dumped out into our schools

01:50:59.640 and the if you can't use it in the schools blm and others are saying well yeah but you can fold this in

01:51:07.560 and there's ways to fold it into math classes like you said there's a lot of gray area so they can use

01:51:15.040 examples my point right now this is precisely the point is that i think most of us as teachers there's

01:51:21.020 3.7 million teachers in american public schools most of us assume that we have broad latitude to do

01:51:27.460 things like that uh to call materials from wherever we will um and at a in in practice we do uh but if

01:51:35.400 somebody makes an issue out of it uh then school boards have the right to say no sorry you can't

01:51:39.640 use that material but just we seldom get asked uh to or school boards seldom get asked to make those

01:51:44.560 declarations so how do you feel about the teachers unions coming after schools like yours uh you know

01:51:51.040 private schools charter schools homeschooling what what what's what's happening there yeah look i'm i'm

01:51:57.880 a pretty staunch uh uh school choice guy i teach at a charter school um you know and and i should also

01:52:04.480 say i take very great pains to not bring any of my personal views about uh you know education and

01:52:09.360 politics into my classroom uh but but i have this other hat that i wear at the fordham institute

01:52:14.080 and and in my professional work uh yeah look i'm staunchly uh pro pro choice pro charter even pro

01:52:20.840 homeschooling so it's been kind of an interesting and clarifying moment to see the degree to which i would

01:52:25.980 argue that the the unions are really overreaching um and and trying to you know impose their will upon

01:52:32.240 schools uh at a time where there's just so much uncertainty uh about whether kids are going to

01:52:36.920 go back to school or not and and uh you know it's it's a lot of everything's in flux and and i think
