00:04:56.040 And so the run-of-the-mill request from the governor is now being distorted as that there's a massive problem with the hospital system here in Texas,

00:05:09.440 Well, you're right about that, and the problems that we are having as it relates to COVID, oddly enough,

00:05:17.040 as you watch the border being pushed by thousands and thousands of people potentially with COVID.

00:05:27.220 ...in the country, given the fact that the Biden administration is allowing so many people in our country with COVID.

00:05:33.640 Texas is overrun at the border, and, I mean, small little teeny towns are having to put COVID tents up.

00:05:45.320 and they're just putting up little tents because they don't know what else to do.

00:05:53.440 You know, what's amazing is that they are bussing people around the country and just dropping them off.

00:06:01.760 and they said that these buses showed up in Dallas and just dumped a couple hundred people out of buses,

00:06:14.960 First of all, I had a county commissioner on last week,

00:06:20.200 and he was talking about a commissioner's court and a judge in a commissioner's court.

00:06:29.140 When you hear court everywhere else but Texas, you think of an actual court,

00:06:35.920 This is like a city council for a county.

00:06:40.120 There are a few counties in Texas that don't have enough court, so they act as a judge,

00:06:45.980 but for the most part in these large counties, a county commissioner's court or a county judge

00:06:50.400 is not really a judicial position.

00:06:53.020 It's more of a management or a city council type position.

00:06:56.020 Okay, and this quote-unquote judge made a ruling against a commissioner

00:07:01.980 and forced him to leave even though he was vaccinated because he wasn't wearing a mask.

00:07:07.560 That is exactly what happened, and, of course, we have an executive order from the governor

00:07:14.600 who's acting under his power called the Disaster Relief Act where he said,

00:07:20.840 hey, you can't require a mask, and that is completely in violation of state law what that commissioner did.

00:07:27.120 So, what are you doing about it today?

00:07:30.620 So, in the next, I think, hour or so, we're going to file to intervene in his case

00:07:35.200 because he's already got litigation going, and we're going to try to stop what we would consider illegal

00:07:40.500 by this county judge.

00:07:43.120 And I doubt he's going to take it well.

00:07:46.300 He has been on Twitter just saying, you know, you've got to mask up.

00:07:52.900 But the county commissioner he kicked out, he was already vaccinated.

00:08:09.560 He needs to, like, lobby the legislature to change it, not decide for himself, hey, I run this county.

00:09:01.900 I have to tell you, and I can't speak for Texas because Texas is, you know, there's a few states that are bucking this system.

00:09:16.760 Well, I think Obama set this up, you know, when he was president.

00:09:22.160 He ignored federal law, didn't work through Congress, made up his own executive orders, had agencies make up the law, and just thumbed his nose at laws.

00:09:31.500 And we had to assume we were very successful doing that.

00:09:33.540 But I think he set sort of the mindset for a lot of Democrat, particularly Democratic elected officials.

00:09:39.200 I don't have to follow a law either.

00:09:40.540 If President Obama doesn't do it, I might adopt the same approach.

00:09:43.780 So that's kind of the approach that you're seeing by mayors, by county judges, by elected officials all over the country who just say, why should I have to follow a law?

00:09:57.580 Firing somebody for their health conditions against the law, it's not being enforced.

00:10:15.260 But nobody's going to stop it.

00:10:43.320 And these occur almost every day in my office where we have to pick among a number of choices of which battle can we go fight.

00:10:56.060 So that's another long battle for us because we've got six lawsuits as it relates to the border.

00:11:01.840 You know, the governor issued his executive order where he said, hey, if there are people being transborder that are illegal,

00:11:07.260 they need to be sent back to the border, which is, in my mind, you know, perfectly normal. 0.55

00:11:11.820 And you'd expect a governor to try to protect his state from the spread of COVID from the border and the crime that's associated with that.

00:11:18.920 And yet we were sued by the federal government for trying to protect our state in a way that the federal government.

00:11:30.400 You said you've been accused of breaking the law, I guess, the federal law.

00:11:37.780 Yeah, so there's this idea under this U.S. Supreme Court case, U.S. v. Arizona,

00:11:43.200 that because the federal government has statutes providing them authority over immigration,

00:11:49.640 that the states still can't protect themselves, that the federal government doesn't.

00:11:53.440 I just don't think that's correct understanding of what the law is.

00:11:56.580 How can it possibly be that a state has to sit by while the federal government ignores the law

00:12:01.300 and allows great harm to the citizens of that state?

00:12:04.560 I can't believe that the governor has to sit by and let that happen.

00:12:07.960 This is the old Constitution is not a suicide pact.

00:12:12.840 It's just not that cannot be the right interpretation of law or the Constitution.

00:54:41.680 And, uh, but all that emotional baggage and trauma through the other foster homes and in trials and tribulations and so forth led to a lot of other things later on in life.

00:54:57.700 Uh, and I was in the military and I was going to do special forces and they told me no because I was still a, uh, not a U.S. citizen.

01:07:56.060 I could tell you, you know, six to eight months of time that I don't recall at all of my life because I had so much alcohol consumption.

01:08:07.140 My wife had two kids and I took them as my own and raised them.

01:08:10.880 But it was very difficult because I had obviously the tendencies from my mom's first husband that still left traces of my parenting.

01:08:18.800 So I was a harsh person for a long time.

01:08:21.100 And then you had the fuel of the alcohol to it.

01:08:24.640 Over time, over time, my wife and I actually got divorced after we had jointly had our child together and alcohol still considered, you know, could still can assume to me.

01:08:39.340 I was away from my wife and my family and I had my youngest daughter with me and we were just sitting there together and I was hung over more than I could imagine.

01:08:47.960 And I looked at her and I thought, this is God's gift to me and I'm treating it like this.

01:08:54.220 And that day I set the bottle down, never touched it again.

01:08:57.820 August 1st this year was actually my 11th year of sobriety.

01:09:00.980 So let's get past the alcohol part.

01:09:03.220 But after that, I mean, I had nothing.

01:09:09.720 And so I just worked dead end job after dead end job until finally, you know, I landed in a service industry that I was very successful in and my skills were great.

01:09:19.260 And after working for many people with a lot of prayer and counsel from church leaders, I started my own business.

01:09:28.380 And I actually started my own business, probably similar to the way that you did a lot of things in your life where I didn't have a lot of money or support.

01:09:35.040 It was whatever I had at the time.

01:09:37.360 I think I might have had $1,100 to start a company with.

01:09:41.140 And fast forward five years later, the Lord has blessed me to the point where I know the Bible says, if you bring the tithe of the storehouse of the Lord, he will pour out blessings upon you more than you can ever contain.

01:09:51.100 And sometimes I'm praying, Lord, I appreciate the blessings, but can I just have just a little bit less right now?

01:09:56.400 Cause this is a lot and, and God is just so good.

01:10:24.780 And if you were to even look at the business profile that I have on Google or talk to the customers that I have, they'll tell, they tell me day after day, they say, we love doing business with you because you care about me, not the money you come into my place of business or my home to help me with my service issue.

01:10:41.560 And you genuinely care about me and my customers are my friends, my, the people around me are my friends and I just have a joy of life that's contagious.

01:10:50.840 And that was never, who would have ever thought that was in the cards of my life.

01:11:05.840 So I will tell you that my, my two oldest kids, we, we have a fantastic relationship, but there's still, I mean, I, I repent to them often.

01:11:15.280 And, and I, and I tell them regularly how sorry I am for the things that I did or said, but I will say this, I love them more than I ever have in my life.

01:11:30.980 Actually, they're not, I say they're, they're always going to be my children, but they're 18 and 19 now.

01:11:38.200 One of my, one of my crowning achievements is that day on August 10th, when I, when I shut the bottle down for the last time, my youngest daughter was actually not old enough to ever have recollection of me ever drinking.

01:11:49.060 And still to this day, someone 14 years old, 13 years old, still has no clue that I ever drank alcohol and never will ever, ever, ever will know that I ever did only through stories that I tell her as cautionary tales of things to look out for from the evils of the world.

01:26:55.400 Apple plans to scan us iPhones for child abuse imagery.

01:26:58.980 And on the surface, if you're not paying attention to what's going on in the world, you think,

01:27:05.300 Uh, I got a, uh, I got an email from a guy who used to be, um, very, very high up at, uh,

01:27:12.100 Yahoo about 20 years ago.

01:27:13.920 And he said, we basically set up a direct line with the FBI because we frequently had websites

01:27:19.920 submitted to us to be crawled or indexed that we believed may contain child pornography

01:27:24.820 or other illegal things.

01:27:26.240 At first, we were just emailing links over to the FBI task force, but the process for

01:27:30.880 them to check on it and get back to us was just so, uh, arduous that we just eventually

01:27:36.200 set the FBI up with an E3 terminal in their LA area offices.

01:27:41.980 Uh, that was basically the same terminal that our editorial team members, those who are the

01:27:46.920 keepers of the internet at the time, uh, they determined which websites and shirt search

01:27:51.620 results showed up for people and which ones we would block trying to keep harmful or

01:27:55.760 illegal content out of Yahoo's search results.

01:27:58.400 So by giving the FBI an E3 terminal, anyone from the editorial team or the sales group

01:28:02.820 could submit a website directly to them for review.

01:28:05.720 It would pop up in their queue, just like a help desk ticket.

01:28:09.320 And someone at the FBI could review it and let us know if the content was legal, but they

01:28:13.820 could also just flag something to be blocked and it would be blocked.

01:28:17.620 Generally, no questions asked.

01:28:19.140 And because of what we felt at the time, we felt like we were doing good, taking down child

01:28:26.240 and sex trafficking criminals.

01:28:27.820 We felt great about it.

01:28:30.140 Uh, this a long winded way of saying, uh, yeah, I'm sure that Apple is, uh, and others

01:28:37.860 are getting into a cozy relationship between social search tech giants and the government.

01:28:42.800 And we now know that this was a mistake to open up the door in the first place.

01:28:50.740 He is a professor of security at Cambridge university and one of the louder voices speaking

01:28:56.040 out and warning us about what Apple is doing.

01:29:05.620 I, I, I, I w I want to understand, uh, why this is so dangerous.

01:29:10.620 Apple says it has all kinds of safety features and they're only scanning faces for those that

01:29:18.700 are, you know, in, in, in sex, uh, rings or have been sex trafficked, uh, and, and maybe

01:29:26.440 those children that are missing.

01:29:30.520 Well, um, you can see how this is going to develop, but first of all,

01:29:35.220 um, Apple will be scanning all the photos in everybody's camera roll everywhere in the

01:29:40.800 USA and later everywhere in the world, um, against the database of 200,000 abuse images,

01:29:46.600 um, that, that had been supplied by the national center for missing and exploited children.

01:29:52.180 Now, given the way that their neural network is organized, it looks like it's going to scan

01:29:57.220 for faces as you say.

01:29:59.260 And so you can imagine the kind of things that will happen, um, that there'll be some abuse

01:30:04.580 image that's 10 or 20 years old.

01:30:06.480 Uh, and, um, so the reviewers at Apple will see a photograph, which isn't of child sex abuse,

01:30:13.540 but of a grown up with their clothes on.

01:30:15.720 And the system will recognize this person.

01:30:18.500 And the person at Apple then has to decide whether this is a, uh, a survivor or a perpetrator

01:30:24.200 and what to do with it.

01:30:25.960 Um, there's a small problem there that US law says that if you do get suspected child abuse

01:30:30.920 material, you should report it at once to NC Mac rather than reporting it to Apple, right?

01:30:36.860 So the, the, the, the, the, the legal problem there.

01:30:39.660 And then secondly, there's the problem of what happens when NC Mac extends that to missing

01:30:44.980 children, right?

01:30:46.620 Because some of the children who are known, you know, who go missing, go missing for perfectly

01:30:51.580 good reasons.

01:30:52.180 For example, they might be getting abused at home.

01:30:54.300 They might get beaten or even sexually abused.

01:30:57.420 And so if you, uh, recognize runaways, there's all sorts of processes around that you have

01:31:02.960 to think about.

01:31:04.120 Apple doesn't seem to have thought about this.

01:31:06.240 You know, they, they, they, they don't seem very keen to provide help desks and help lines

01:31:11.160 and places where people can report stuff.

01:31:14.280 And then the next problem is that once you've got a mechanism sitting in your iPhone that

01:31:19.120 can scan your camera roll for, um, for faces, it's open to any government in the world to

01:31:24.880 come along with a warrant and say, Hey, Mr. Apple, uh, we've got a file of 20,000 faces

01:31:30.020 that we'd like you to scan for in our country.

01:31:32.460 And you can guess what those faces might be in China.

01:31:36.200 It might be the faces of the Dalai Lama and the Pope.

01:31:39.440 Um, in, um, Europe, if there's been, um, some rowdy demonstration in Paris, for example,

01:31:45.100 the police might feed in the faces of demonstrators.

01:31:47.480 You know, your guess is as good as mine, but Apple is building a very, very dangerous

01:31:52.360 mechanism into its iPhones.

01:31:54.680 And, um, there needs to be proper scrutiny and accountability of this.

01:31:58.220 So this is actually, is it based on, or is it just very similar to something that happened

01:32:03.540 in 2008 in China that kind of opened Pandora's box?

01:32:08.200 Well, yes.

01:32:09.100 And this is a worrying thing, you know, because if our civilization is going to be in Cold

01:32:13.760 War 2.0 with China for the next 20 years or 30 years, um, we should watch what the Chinese 1.00

01:32:19.980 do and understand it rather than copying them.

01:32:22.780 And in China, what happened in 2008 is that they mandated everybody in the country to put

01:32:28.820 software called Green Dam on their PCs.

01:32:31.320 And Green Dam was sold to the population, um, as being, uh, a porn filter.

01:32:37.080 And it did that to some extent, but very badly.

01:32:39.860 However, the real purpose of Green Dam was to look for words like Falun Gong and Dalai Lama

01:32:46.020 and so on that were of interest to the Ministry of State Security.

01:32:50.080 Uh, what Green Dam also did is it made your computer vulnerable because the government weren't

01:32:54.760 very good at writing software and the software that they produced, uh, meant that everybody

01:32:59.380 who used the Green Dam software was vulnerable to having their PC taken over by websites that

01:33:04.760 they visited.

01:33:05.460 Now that's been fixed by now, but still it's the case that in China and in Russia, we have

01:33:10.800 this ecosystem of governments scanning what's on people's PCs.

01:33:16.160 And, um, no doubt the Chinese will be seeing to it that they get to scan stuff in people's 0.82

01:33:20.660 phones as well.

01:33:21.280 So, you know, it was, we were talking about this the other day and, uh, I said to my staff,

01:33:27.960 can anybody name anything that you know is a bigger threat to your freedom and security

01:33:35.820 than social media and technology?

01:33:39.840 I mean, it's not necessarily the threat today, but we know what it can do.

01:33:46.120 And, and yet again, do you know anybody who has given it up and said, I'm just not going

01:33:53.080 to be a part of this?

01:33:54.420 Very, very rarely does that happen.

01:33:58.000 We are just going down the road and they keep passing these red lines of, oh, that's a really

01:34:04.960 bad sign.

01:34:05.980 That's a really bad thing to do.

01:34:07.560 And just hoping that it's not going to be turned against us when we already see social

01:34:13.560 media is doing all of these things.

01:34:18.020 Well, absolutely.

01:34:19.460 You know, I, I used Android for many years and switched to Apple a couple of years ago when

01:34:24.100 I was updating my security engineering book and I noted how much more secure Apple was.

01:34:29.520 But the problem with Apple iPhones being tamper resistant is that I can't easily drill into

01:34:35.560 them and find out what they're doing.

01:34:37.320 I can't see the database of hashes of abuse in my phone and check that it doesn't contain

01:34:44.600 hashes of dissidents instead.

01:34:46.620 And with a less secure phone like an Android, you could perhaps do that and you could hold

01:34:50.580 people to account.

01:34:52.120 So here is a case where a security is being used against us to undermine our privacy and

01:34:58.200 the tamper resistance of the iPhone means that the government can have an eye spy in your

01:35:03.760 iPhone over which you've got no control whatsoever.

01:35:08.460 Ross, how, how far away are we from a, an easy police state with the wrong person taking

01:35:18.320 charge?

01:35:20.460 Well, that's exactly the problem here.

01:35:23.520 You mustn't give the police too much power.

01:35:25.840 You may think that it's nice to give the police power when your lot are in charge, but it never

01:35:30.520 works because you end up with the other lot in charge and you know, then you've had it.

01:35:35.300 So to stay free, we have to see to it that the government can only do so much that it can't

01:35:41.740 undermine our basic freedoms.

01:35:43.280 And you're lucky in the United States having your constitution here in Europe, we have the

01:35:48.940 European Convention on Human Rights.

01:35:50.740 And once you get to those parts of the world where we don't have guarantees for basic freedoms,

01:35:56.880 Well, I don't know if you've been paying attention much to America lately, Ross, but we're not

01:36:00.880 following the constitution.

01:36:02.240 I mean, we are, our constitution says, you know, you, you can't, uh, you can't quarter soldiers

01:36:08.220 into a house and go through somebody's papers.

01:36:10.860 Well, I think you already have that.

01:36:13.200 If you're, if you're, if you're on online and the government wants some information, they're

01:36:20.000 just going to go to one of these tech companies and they'll go through all of your papers.

01:36:23.120 I mean, and they're, they'll watch you or they'll scan your photos and you, there's no

01:36:28.140 such thing as privacy anymore.

01:36:29.800 Well, indeed, and I, I, I'm not an expert on a U S law, of course, being a Brit, but I

01:36:37.060 hear from American friends that the argument, uh, which Apple and the FBI are going to use

01:36:42.820 goes to a case, uh, around drug sniffer dogs, where somebody's in a traffic stop, uh, the

01:36:48.800 drug sniffer dog brought around and they found some, um, um, weed in his boot and, um, and

01:36:54.540 he got convicted and he said that was unfair.

01:36:56.600 And the court said that if you've got a search that finds only contraband, that's okay.

01:37:03.060 Now it depends on what the government defines as contraband, but if you've got a government

01:37:07.400 search engine that can look at all your most intimate stuff, you know, your photos, your

01:37:12.260 emails, your texts, and it can use artificial intelligence to find out something that the

01:37:17.020 government of the day considers to be contraband.

01:37:20.080 Um, then that means, uh, it makes a mockery of the idea that you've got to get warrants because

01:37:25.920 suddenly you're turning the universe around so that the government to do surveillance doesn't

01:37:30.240 have to get a warrant against a suspected person, but against a suspected idea or an expect, a

01:37:36.660 suspected image or a suspected, um, form of speech.

01:37:41.160 Is that what's, that's what's changing here.

01:37:43.080 And it's really scary.

01:37:43.940 Is there, is there anything the average person can do to secure themselves?

01:37:49.540 Well, um, what's happening at the, in, in the longterm, this is down to political, um, action.

01:38:01.480 This is down to, well, you know, my next phone isn't going to be an iPhone.

01:38:05.700 Um, in the meantime, Apple saying that they will only scan your photos if you back them

01:38:11.800 up in iCloud, well then fine, uh, buy yourself a disc drive and, uh, attach it to your laptop

01:38:17.120 and back your phone up on your laptop and back the laptop up on a disc drive.

01:38:21.100 I mean, by doing that, that only just tells that anybody who does market in child pornography,

01:38:26.600 don't put it on the iCloud.

01:38:31.300 Well, and it's also too much bother for most people.

01:38:33.980 You see what Apple and the FBI will be relying on here is the fact that Apple nagged you really,

01:38:40.220 really hard to get an iCloud account and to put more money in it and to back your phone

01:38:44.640 up to iCloud and your MacBook too, rather than using a disc drive.

01:38:48.580 You know, for some years, my wife refused to get an iCloud account and every time she

01:38:52.120 connected her iPhone to the, um, the MacBook, it just complained and said, put in your iCloud

01:38:56.540 password.

01:38:57.360 And it's this kind of commercial nagging, uh, that is now going to be exploited by law enforcement

01:39:02.980 to drive a coach and horses through security.

01:39:05.980 But there is another thing here, which is that your photos in iCloud aren't properly encrypted

01:39:12.140 when they're backed up anyway.

01:39:13.980 So Apple could, if it wished, um, run, um, child porn, um, detection software over the

01:39:21.260 photos, just like, for example, Facebook does over photos in Facebook messenger and Google

01:39:25.760 does over photos in Gmail.

01:39:27.580 And it could then report, uh, people who already have, um, illegal images in iCloud to, um, NC

01:39:35.440 Mac, but it doesn't do that.

01:39:36.660 Um, last year, Facebook reported, made over 20 million reports to NC Mac and Apple made

01:39:42.520 under a thousand.

01:39:43.860 So wait, so wait, so something really weird going on here.

01:39:47.400 Why Apple really cared about stopping a child sex abuse.

01:48:09.360 You are the first person that has compared big tech to the tower of Babel that I know

01:48:16.140 Uh, and, uh, it's, it's a remarkable, uh, article you want to go into it.

01:48:23.300 So most of us know the story of the tower of Babel, right?

01:48:27.460 And so Nimrod, who is a man of might, a mighty guy, uh, builds the first cities, uh, after

01:48:35.300 the flood.

01:48:35.840 Um, and he was really, really successful.

01:48:38.880 Then this group kind of comes from the East travels West and thinks that all this kind

01:48:45.300 of messiness that exists in cities and, uh, you know, different kinds of people with different

01:48:50.300 kinds of thought, uh, was just too messy.

01:48:52.720 And they build this tower and the tower is a self-aggrandizing, uh, um, pursuit, which basically

01:49:02.480 says, uh, everyone needs to talk a single language, have a single culture and we can enforce that

01:49:08.180 in the city.

01:49:08.980 And when, when God comes down to see what the people have built there, he says, this is

01:49:13.240 a bad idea.

01:49:13.900 We need to jumble their tongues. 1.00

01:49:16.260 We need to jumble their language, um, and spread them out into different parts, into different 1.00

01:49:21.860 cities and different, uh, states and islands so that we can actually develop different

01:49:26.780 languages.

01:49:27.200 And there's no kind of one central control, uh, of it.

01:49:30.400 That's the story of the tower of Babel.

01:49:31.760 And I think, you know, uh, I'm a big fan of tech.

01:49:34.800 Uh, I spend my day job investing in technology and startups and innovation.

01:49:38.660 I think it propels us forward.

01:49:40.240 What I worry about, you know, what I worry about is when you don't put kind of timeless

01:49:44.360 values at the center of this, at the center of this innovation, it can go awry, which is

01:49:49.820 what happened in the tower of Babel.

01:49:50.940 Now we have, uh, what I would call problems of deep platforming or enforcement of a, uh,

01:49:57.200 certain orthodoxy, uh, of what you can, can't say.

01:50:00.220 And even more scary right now, candidly is financial de-platforming where, where tools

01:50:05.160 of finance, which are very digital.

01:50:06.620 And I'm a big fan of that.

01:50:08.480 Um, if, if a single company or a couple of companies can de-platform somebody financially,

01:50:14.520 it could be destructive to many of us.

01:50:17.460 Oh, I mean, there's, there's no escape from this if it was used, um, you know, with the

01:50:24.360 wrong intent in the wrong, in the wrong hands technology.

01:50:27.940 We are facing either the greatest time period.

01:50:31.820 And this is saying something because there is no other time.

01:50:35.440 If, if, if people were honest, there is no other time in history or, or any other place

01:50:41.780 in history that people would want to be born than right now in the United States of America.

01:50:47.460 It is remarkable what technology can bring to us in a very short period of time, but it's

01:50:54.760 breathtaking to think how fast it can become, uh, a really bad, uh, jailer or slave maker.

01:51:05.140 You know, I think one of the, one of the, somebody said to me this morning, he says, uh, you know,

01:51:09.820 you're, you're a traditional conservative and that you want change, but it needs to kind of

01:51:13.760 happen in phases and not all at once, because we need to, we need to work in timeless values,

01:51:19.300 uh, into these things.

01:51:20.380 I called my book, the tree of life and prosperity, because I believe that capitalism and innovation

01:51:25.660 drives tremendous prosperity, but that prosperity can turn a problematic if you don't have the tree

01:51:32.100 of life, which is kind of our timeless wisdom and principles, uh, that I think have, you know,

01:51:36.480 our time tested over thousands of years. I'll tell you something else. There's, um,

01:51:43.120 we've gotten to kind of a relativist values era, let's just call it right now, or kind of new

01:51:47.560 bondage come and go. Um, and we have this notion that everything we've built today is kind of bigger

01:51:52.640 and better than it was in the past. Well, the Bible, at least in my view, has had the largest

01:51:56.620 number of daily active users since time immemorial. That probably tells us something about its

01:52:01.920 staying power and the values that it drives home. And, and I think that needs to inform our innovation

01:52:07.000 that needs to inform our economy going forward. And that's kind of the, the edifice I'm trying to

01:52:11.640 erect in the book, um, around this. And by the way, this touches other topics. I had a piece that

01:52:16.720 was published today on town hall about universal basic income. Um, I'm sure that's a hot topic of

01:52:23.340 yours as well.

01:52:24.000 Well, yeah, it doesn't work. Explain through the tree of life. Explain, explain why.

01:52:31.600 So, you know, again, like timeless stories in the Bible, we have one called the garden of Eden

01:52:35.320 and the garden of Eden is interesting story because it can be interpreted in so many different ways. But

01:52:40.540 one of the, the super interesting things about the garden of Eden is that, uh, man's, uh, needs,

01:52:46.300 basic needs were absolutely provided for in, in the garden, right? And he doesn't work

01:52:50.860 and he's bored and they're so bored that Eve doesn't talk to him. She talks to the serpent

01:52:55.580 and there's no kind of joint activity, joint life pursuit. And, uh, until man is expelled from the

01:53:01.500 garden of Eden, the Bible does not say it's a curse, just says he's expelled. He actually doesn't have

01:53:05.820 children. So until he encounters hard work, thorns and thistles outside the garden, there's no children

01:53:11.260 and there's no work that's productive. And UBI has said, the only purpose of work is that you get an

01:53:17.340 income, but that's not accurate. Work is productivity. Work is what gets people out in the morning. Work is

01:53:23.100 what, you know, a solid part of family life. And, and I think we got, we need to kind of return to those

01:53:28.320 roots because it's not just about, you know, your basics. It's about your hard work and your productivity

01:53:32.980 in society. And by the way, if we need a reminder, COVID is it. People are not going to work after COVID

01:53:38.140 because there was too much money just handed out in a basic way. And we do need to take care of people in

01:53:43.680 society. I think that's a very important principle that's thousands of years old who were on hard

01:53:49.740 times and that is society's and citizens responsibility. But if we provide their income,

01:53:56.280 they're not going back to work. We've literally just proven that living lab called COVID.

01:53:59.900 So how do you, how do you make this case to, uh, a country that doesn't understand what it really

01:54:08.460 has, um, is, is turning its back on really scientifically proven, uh, uh, knowns, uh,

01:54:18.680 turning its back on, you know, all of the scientific theory, uh, rejecting all time tested principles.

01:54:27.640 Well, we're just printing. We're not printing money. We're digitizing money. So there won't be inflation.

01:54:32.460 I mean, come on, uh, we're turning our back on all of these things. How do you, how do you suggest

01:54:38.940 we get, that we sell this to people? So I think there's, there's a couple of parts to this. One is

01:54:45.960 we actually need to embrace technology and innovation and, and, and even things like, uh, cryptocurrencies,

01:54:52.460 which are, uh, helping people, you know, maintain freedom. However, um, we need to start a

01:54:59.420 conversation around what are the core principles. You know, many of these are enshrined in the

01:55:04.960 constitution. Many of them are enshrined the declaration of independence and America's kind

01:55:09.520 of at its core got this right. Um, but we, we've got a bunch of topics that have become taboo. Like

01:55:15.680 we can ask people to go to work. And by the way, we should ask people, not just what their rights are,

01:55:20.280 but what their responsibilities are. I think one of the things that the Bible teaches us is you

01:55:24.800 actually have very few rights. You have mostly responsibilities to your fellow. And, um, and we

01:55:29.560 need to ask people to take responsibility both for themselves and, and for other people, they should

01:55:34.300 do it out of a sense of duty. And I think that's one of the great things about America. People had

01:55:38.520 a sense of duty and not a sense of entitlement. And, um, can that be, can that really, can that really

01:55:44.300 be had without a, an honest search by the individual for a higher power? I mean, otherwise it's

01:55:54.740 just imposing duties on people. Look, one of the things I've, I've kind of discovered is that

01:56:01.140 when we talk to people who kind of eye to eye and level with them, um, irrespective of their

01:56:06.560 religious persuasion, uh, or belief in God, people want to be a part of something greater than

01:56:12.360 themselves. Um, they want to be a part of something that's successful. They want to be a part of

01:56:17.100 something that is caring. Um, for me, by the way, it's my belief in God, right? Um, and I think for

01:56:22.820 many of your listeners, the same is true, but I don't think that excludes other people. And I

01:56:27.560 think we can, we can reach out and I just reach out. I think we can have a, you know, level set

01:56:31.760 conversation. I was inspired by my grandfather a lot, who was a naval officer in world war two

01:56:38.080 and had, um, no deep friends of, of different persuasions. And, uh, you know, they, they had a

01:56:45.400 sense of duty and, you know, they supported each other in that sense of duty. And I think that's,

01:56:49.820 that's super important here. And we got to get away from senses of entitlement.

01:56:54.360 And I think the biblical stories around that, you know, support that. And I think, you know,

01:56:59.400 the other thing is, you know, going back to the tower of Babel for a second, we have to watch out

01:57:04.860 for how, how enforcing powerful entities are. Freedom is critically important. And in the second

01:57:13.880 volume of the book, which has actually come out in Hebrew, but not yet in English, um, one of the

01:57:18.720 foundations of, of like, of the exodus is you need freedom in order to have private property. So

01:57:23.560 freedom of thought, freedom to be different, freedom to be, um, freedom to speak your mind

01:57:30.420 is fundamental to capitalism and private property. And, you know, we need to insist on that.
