00:07:47.020 2012 that appear to depict a seance there.

00:07:50.200 I mean, they're at a Ouija board ceremony with a loose with a lit crucifix that was laying

00:08:09.100 And his partner is dressed, I guess, like Christ, if that's with a crown of thorns.

00:49:18.160 point for a lot of reasons.

00:49:20.620 We had the 2008 financial crisis.

00:49:22.060 We had the bailouts.

00:49:23.240 We had no accountability for for a lot

00:49:25.460 of financial institutions that took

00:49:27.260 risk at the public risk.

00:49:30.480 When times were good, they got paid.

00:49:32.360 When times went bad, the public had

00:49:33.620 to bail them out.

00:49:34.600 But that was also the birth of of the

00:49:36.640 identity politic wing of the new

00:49:38.520 left.

00:49:38.860 It was Barack Obama elected as the

00:49:40.820 first black president of the United

00:49:41.880 States.

00:49:42.280 A lot of the victimhood narratives that

00:49:43.980 went with that were also in the

00:49:45.920 thick of the greatest intergenerational

00:49:47.640 wealth transfer in human history from

00:49:50.000 the baby boomer generation to my

00:49:51.640 generation of millennials and Gen Z.

00:49:54.020 And I think that creates a new

00:49:55.220 victimhood culture and a culture of

00:49:56.940 entitlement as well.

00:49:58.640 So there were a lot of things around

00:50:00.040 the turn of the last decade.

00:50:01.560 There were a lot of factors in our

00:50:02.880 culture that conspired to create this

00:50:05.440 new culture of victimhood.

00:50:07.680 And one of the things I one of the

00:50:09.180 things I describe in the book is also

00:50:10.960 the rise of a laziness culture, even

00:50:13.180 in our workforce, but in our culture

00:50:15.380 more broadly.

00:50:16.560 And one of the one of the things I say

00:50:17.940 in the book is that victimhood fits

00:50:19.700 laziness like a glove in that people 0.63

00:50:23.000 today who are lazy and don't want to

00:50:25.240 work construe that not just as their

00:50:27.920 own sloth, which is one of the human

00:50:29.560 vices, but also as a narrative of the

00:50:32.580 grand fight against the oppression of

00:50:35.040 capitalism, the oppression of modernity,

00:50:37.900 the colonialism of capitalism.

00:50:39.420 And these are the kinds of things you

00:50:40.600 hear as part of the great resignation on

00:50:43.280 Reddit in the pandemic over the started

00:50:46.080 back in the post 2008 era.

00:50:47.760 And I think it was the combination of a

00:50:50.020 new laziness culture of entitlement that

00:50:52.160 came from my generation being on the

00:50:54.240 receiving end of this large

00:50:55.340 intergenerational wealth transfer, but

00:50:57.280 combined with these victimhood narratives

00:50:59.020 that justified that laziness with a

00:51:01.280 moral veneer.

00:51:02.360 That's part of what led to us now having

00:51:04.540 a shared national identity based on

00:51:06.120 victimhood.

00:51:07.040 We're a nation of victims.

00:51:08.340 So, and I think the case I make is we

00:51:09.940 need to graduate from that.

00:51:11.220 You, you talk about Plato's ideal society

00:51:14.380 and you talk about it because you say,

00:51:17.060 you know, that's how we find the ideal

00:51:18.960 citizen.

00:51:19.900 What is the ideal citizen in 2022?

00:51:23.960 In America, I mean, this is, this is the

00:51:25.780 question of our hour.

00:51:26.780 Okay.

00:51:27.180 So I think there are two parts to what

00:51:29.580 it means to be American.

00:51:30.520 And I think each of us has some of this

00:51:32.040 in our heart.

00:51:32.780 On one hand, we all want to be an

00:51:35.120 individual who's able to pursue our own

00:51:37.380 individualistic dreams through the

00:51:39.200 system of free market capitalism.

00:51:40.840 That's what we think of as the American

00:51:42.240 dream.

00:51:42.800 I have that impulse.

00:51:44.900 Most of the listeners in this program

00:51:46.380 share that feeling too.

00:51:47.860 That's half the story.

00:51:57.800 us have missed for years, which is also

00:52:00.760 our hunger to be part of a nation that

00:52:03.440 is greater than the sum of its parts, a

00:52:06.240 collective whole as citizens.

00:52:08.840 And that's the side of our identity as

00:52:10.440 individuals that really, I think, revolves

00:52:12.960 around also the revival of civic duty.

00:52:15.720 One of the chapters in the book is

00:52:16.960 entitled A Theory of Duty.

00:52:18.640 It's a play on John Rawls' A Theory of

00:52:20.800 Justice, which was the North Star of the

00:52:23.020 Left for much of the late 20th century.

00:52:24.900 I offer what I call a theory of duty, which

00:52:27.280 talks about the revival of civic duty.

00:52:29.860 And the case I make is that it's not at

00:52:31.380 odds with liberty to have a civic duty.

00:52:33.960 Our civic duty as citizens is different than

00:52:36.740 the freedoms we want to have in all of the

00:52:38.760 other spheres of our lives, including

00:52:40.080 economically.

00:52:41.060 And I think it's one of the things that

00:52:42.100 conservatives sometimes get wrong.

00:52:43.520 We get wrong in our, in our obsession with

00:52:45.820 just talking about freedom.

00:52:46.840 And believe me, I'm 10 out of a scale of

00:52:49.860 We miss the fact that if we have civic

00:52:52.540 duties as citizens, that actually gives us

00:52:54.960 greater fortitude to pursue our freedoms

00:52:57.340 through the system of free market capitalism,

00:52:59.780 through our pursuit of excellence as

00:53:01.200 individuals.

00:53:01.900 And that's the philosophy at the heart of

00:53:03.340 this book.

00:53:03.740 I'm old enough that, you know, in high school,

00:53:06.140 you couldn't graduate without having a

00:53:08.700 class called Rights and Responsibilities.

00:53:11.700 And we've forgotten the responsibility part.

00:53:14.240 And that is, like you say, huge.

00:53:16.860 But, you know, I learned something when I

00:53:18.540 lived in, in New York City.

00:53:21.120 When I moved to New York City, I was always

00:53:23.240 a guy who, if there was garbage on the

00:53:24.900 street, I would, you know, pick it up and

00:53:26.360 throw it in the garbage can.

00:53:27.920 And it was just ingrained in me.

00:53:30.300 I grew up in a smaller town.

00:53:31.980 And, and after about two years of living in

00:53:36.180 New York, there was garbage at the front of

00:53:38.860 my building on 6th Avenue.

00:53:40.760 And it was just, this newspaper was just

00:53:43.500 blowing everywhere.

00:53:44.600 And my first thought was, how much money do

00:53:48.000 I have to pay this stupid city for them to

00:53:50.880 keep it clean?

00:53:52.140 And I stopped in my own tracks and I thought,

00:53:54.880 oh my gosh, I've turned into one of them.

00:53:59.140 In a certain sense, well, that's really

00:54:00.580 honest of you, Glenn, to talk about looking

00:54:02.220 in the mirror that way.

00:54:03.220 It's something that more of us ought to do

00:54:04.760 is actually before we point the figure

00:54:06.120 outward, let's take a mirror and look

00:54:07.840 within.

00:54:26.300 conservative movement to look internally

00:54:27.700 and say, all right, look, we can

00:54:29.260 criticize the poison that fills the

00:54:31.340 vacuum all we want.

00:54:32.960 At the end of the day, we're not rising

00:54:34.500 to the occasion if we don't fill that

00:54:36.500 vacuum with something more meaningful,

00:54:38.140 something more rich that dilutes the

00:54:40.560 poison.

00:55:35.200 victimhood in response to left-wing

00:55:38.820 way, a big critic of.

00:55:39.780 And a lot of what I'm saying is a

00:55:40.780 self-reflection, Glenn.

00:55:42.000 I have spent the last two years

00:55:43.140 criticizing a lot of woke victimhood

00:55:44.880 culture, left-wing victimhood

00:55:46.400 culture.

00:55:46.680 But one of the things I've learned

00:55:47.720 and looking, talking about

00:55:48.620 introspection for myself, is how

00:55:50.740 much, and we're moving the needle a

00:55:52.180 little bit by putting the spotlight

00:55:53.340 on the problem, but if we want to

00:55:54.680 move the needle in a big way, I

00:55:56.160 mean, we've got a generation left to

00:55:57.700 save the identity of this country.

00:59:23.420 to the Roman era, people could see that

00:59:25.320 he had dark skin.

00:59:26.580 But it was no different than someone

00:59:27.760 having dark eyes or dark hair.

00:59:29.620 The thing they actually cared about was

00:59:30.980 were you a Roman citizen or were you not?

00:59:33.720 Were you a member of this nation or were

00:59:36.160 you not?

00:59:36.620 That's how they actually saw him.

00:59:38.560 And in a certain sense, we have created

00:59:40.100 our vision even of history.

00:59:41.620 He's the Black Emperor we need, not the 1.00

00:59:45.340 That was never how the Romans saw him.

00:59:47.680 And it just shows you how anachronistically

00:59:49.340 even we view history, that if we're able

00:59:56.900 present, it suddenly becomes politically

01:09:45.700 The lawsuit provided a lot more evidence of government collusion with social media companies.

01:10:13.980 over 60 videos posted on my account had been demonetized practically overnight.

01:10:20.520 Some of them were originally posted as far back as February.

01:10:24.280 Now, it's important to understand the difference between being demonetized and a violation.

01:10:29.140 A violation means we broke Facebook's rules and could get banned.

01:10:33.380 These videos are just demonetized because they're too sensitive for advertisers.

01:10:39.160 And the way this works is very telling.
