00:05:56.680 to protect depositors the fdic has created a deposit insurance national bank of santa clara

00:06:02.100 at the time of closing the fdic as receiver immediately transferred to this new receiver bank

00:06:09.520 all of the insured deposits that were held at silicon valley bank okay so what so what really

00:06:17.460 happened here that's the way cnbc will explain it to the people who know what the hell they're

00:06:23.460 talking about and all the acronyms and everything else here's what happened a couple of things

00:06:29.900 first of all we're raising rates we had the covid money coming in right and you just heard there

00:06:37.720 call this covid money well they wanted to invest it they needed to put it someplace and invest it because

00:06:44.140 they had silicon valley bank had so much money coming in from from covid and so what did they do they

00:06:51.360 bought treasuries and at the time you could buy a 10-year treasury and you would get two percent

00:06:59.320 interest guaranteed at the end of 10 years that was pretty good back then but now treasuries are

00:07:07.720 selling for about five percent interest and you don't get that until the end of the 10 years so when

00:07:14.860 you buy something a 10-year treasury you're buying it for 10 years if you have only eight years on it

00:07:23.580 you can sell it but you're going to probably have to sell it at a discount if the new ones are paying

00:07:31.800 more so they invested the the money in treasuries at two percent just let's remember that what they had

00:07:42.200 um in the bank if you will they owed 195 billion dollars that's to the people who have put their money

00:09:57.280 they found out friday they were also screwed see this bank loans money to these companies these tech companies

00:10:06.860 and they loan them out venture capital and so they loan them the money to operate and to be able to do

00:10:14.820 everything they can over the next year well they've got to put that money somewhere so the bank loans it out

00:10:31.260 to this venture capital firm the or the uh or the uh tech startup and the tech startup then says where do

00:10:38.320 i put all this money and silicon valley bank says oh just in my other hand just give me that money back

01:26:14.440 happened with Silicon Valley Bank took a lot of risks with depositor money by

01:26:19.360 buying what are called mortgage-backed securities that are sensitive to interest

01:26:28.000 Silicon Valley Bank is they also had their depositors the customers of the

01:26:31.660 bank were a lot of these tech startups in Silicon Valley who also lose money or

01:26:37.100 lose the opportunity to get money when interest rates go up so that put them in a

01:26:41.280 really tough spot when the interest rates went up as a consequence the bank

01:26:45.120 collapsed now a lot of those depositors those tech startups put way too much

01:26:50.440 money in this one bank it was a risk management failure it was a mistake
