00:00:00.040
Greetings my esteemed audience. We are yet again checking in from good old Spain. In this fine
00:00:06.140
video we will have a look at literally the greatest renaissance palace in the world and
00:00:11.240
we'll also check in from a little mountaineering expedition. But first we have a message from the
00:00:17.900
esteemed sponsor of this video. And as you might have guessed I am sponsoring myself. It feels
00:00:24.740
great mate to sponsor myself in this way. And I'm very proud of course to present the
00:00:30.720
sponsor LeguGloria.com. LeguGloria the greatest clothing company in the world. So if you followed
00:00:37.400
us on social media, followed the newsletter which by the way you can subscribe to. It's
00:00:43.060
on the homepage of LeguGloria. So do check it out. Do sign up and you will get some nice
00:00:48.160
stories and news about releases etc. So anyway perhaps you've seen a lot of the linen
00:00:54.440
garments as of late. But don't forget that we have many other garments as well and products
00:00:59.420
so do check out the other categories on the webshop. So first link in the description box
00:01:05.460
below. LeguGloria.com. Now back to the video at hand. Men of culture and enlightenment aka
00:01:12.980
those who read my book reviews will know that I have for some time now had an urge to summit
00:01:20.120
Mount Kebnikayse in good old Sweden. Now I have still to do that. I must mount an expedition
00:01:26.540
whenever I get the time to do so. I did something similar though. I had the opportunity to summit
00:01:32.440
Mount Penalara here in good old Spain. Shout out to Alonso for the valiant company. So Mount
00:01:39.800
Penalara is actually higher than Mount Kebnikayse but since we start from a higher position already
00:01:45.620
it's not quite as big of an expedition. But still it was a really nice day. A good training session
00:01:52.580
took five hours. The ascent that part of the loop was a bit more arduous than the descent. And of
00:02:00.240
course as you might see on the video footage absolutely stunning views and we actually saw
00:02:05.820
San Ildefonso. We will return to this sacred place in a separate video but yeah I was quite excited to
00:02:11.320
see that from the peaks. So good times good stuff. I can definitely recommend that you get out in
00:02:17.000
nature on these expeditions to absorb as much divine energy as possible. Now I encourage you to admire
00:02:25.000
the majestic nature as well as my physique and and after that we will have a look at El Escorial.
00:02:41.320
We'll see you later.
00:02:46.000
We'll be right back.
00:03:16.000
Now, as you might have suspected, this last footage is actually from the Atlantic.
00:03:30.640
It's just so epic and nice that I had to use it again, and I will probably use it more
00:03:36.440
times as well.
00:03:37.400
So, anyway, on to the great Renaissance Palace of El Escorial.
00:03:43.560
Now, this majestic palace was built between 1563 and 1584 by order of King Philip II, and
00:03:53.800
that is the son of Charles V, an absolute one of the most powerful men of all time.
00:03:59.840
We'll get back to him in just a bit, but first I will explain what I found so fascinating
00:04:05.140
with this great place.
00:04:07.400
So, you have this, it's a whole complex, it's a massive building where you have different
00:04:13.600
places inside of the buildings.
00:04:15.460
You have the library, which we spent most of our time in here, my beloved wife and I.
00:04:21.540
It was just so aesthetic, so epic, so many details to look at.
00:04:25.600
So, I tried to do justice by filming most of it then, so the library here you see before
00:04:31.720
you.
00:04:32.440
So, the interesting part here is that you have in El Escorial, in this massive building,
00:04:37.740
you also have a great basilica.
00:04:40.360
And, of course, it's a church, so you have plenty of Christian iconography, or rather European
00:04:45.540
Christian.
00:04:46.040
And when I say European Christian, I mean that you have these classical beautiful angels,
00:04:51.200
so not these biblically accurate angels, you might have heard.
00:04:55.760
It's a bit of a meme to say biblically accurate, but, yeah, anyway, you have a beautiful angel
00:05:00.780
is a European angel, heavily inspired by paganism, of course.
00:05:04.260
So, you have Christian elements in the palace, and then you have the library, and here you can
00:05:10.640
see you have, on the artwork, on the walls, you have Apollo, for example, you have Hercules,
00:05:16.040
you have Pan, you have many different pagan elements, and then, of course, they celebrate
00:05:20.960
various sciences, and the sciences are depicted as pagan goddesses, so you can see Philosophia,
00:05:28.100
for example.
00:05:29.120
So, interesting stuff, for sure.
00:05:31.400
So, the Renaissance can be seen as a revival of paganism, and, of course, a time of scientific
00:05:39.260
exploration, a time of art, a time of aesthetics, also a time of chaos.
00:05:45.400
But, during chaotic times, you can have these great artistic expressions, some thinking about
00:05:51.160
Italy, in particular, we'll return to this topic later on, but that's what I have to say
00:05:56.000
about the Renaissance now, while we're admiring this great artwork.
00:06:00.600
alimentos, like,
00:06:09.300
say it in the distance, to the Renaissance.
00:06:10.600
We are in there at a close moment.
00:06:12.740
Amen.
00:06:15.980
Earlier at Princeton, I
00:06:16.380
was given a trip to dagen
00:06:19.940
and then he
00:06:25.600
was given to that
00:06:29.600
Now, I suppose many of you know that I'm an enjoyer of calligraphy, so I took the time
00:06:53.220
to admire this fine book right here.
00:06:55.320
And as a gentle book publisher as well, I got inspired greatly by the absolute beauty
00:07:02.100
of this tome of knowledge.
00:07:04.260
Now let us return to the aforementioned Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.
00:07:10.700
Allow me to read his many illustrious titles for you so you can admire his splendor.
00:07:16.760
Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke of Austria, King of Spain, Lord of the Netherlands, Titlear
00:07:23.400
Duke of Burgundy, head of the Great House of the Habsburgs.
00:07:28.280
During his reign, he spent a lot of time fighting the rising threat to the east.
00:07:32.840
By this time, of course, quite a powerful entity.
00:07:35.400
I am talking about the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman the Magnificent was his contemporary.
00:07:41.680
So in the Hall of Battles in El Scorial, you can see some depictions of wars fought against
00:07:47.400
Moors, as well as against the French.
00:07:50.620
So the French and both the Holy Roman Empire and Spain always been rivals, which is natural
00:07:57.960
if you look at the geography.
00:08:00.200
Now the Reconquista, it wasn't the end of battles between Europe and the Global South,
00:08:06.140
North Africa, the Barbary Coast, the Ottomans.
00:08:09.000
This continued in the early modern period as well.
00:08:11.840
So even after, as I mentioned in the latest video and in the latest podcast, Spain managed
00:08:17.240
to complete the Reconquista, completed the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula in 1492.
00:08:24.220
The battles continued because you had the Barbary Coast and they commenced slave raids on European
00:08:30.440
coasts well into the 1800s until the French conquered a lot of territory there.
00:08:37.860
And also for my American friends and my Swedish friends, I'm happy to report that there was
00:08:43.340
a joint military expedition.
00:08:45.400
So the US and Sweden fought against the Barbary Corsairs and this is known as the First Barbary
00:08:51.380
War from 1801 to 1805.
00:08:55.600
Shout out and much love to my brothers in good old America.
00:08:59.860
And of course, shout out to the French and the Spanish and the Portuguese as well who
00:09:03.480
fought against the menace of these pirates and we finally put an end to it.
00:09:08.960
Good stuff.
00:09:09.960
Good times.
00:09:10.960
Now on a similar note, I just have to say it as well.
00:09:13.280
Big shout out to the other European nations who fought against the Ottomans on the other
00:09:17.760
side of the Mediterranean.
00:09:19.340
Big topic.
00:09:20.340
We will definitely return to it in coming videos and podcast episodes.
00:09:25.220
That all being said, I can definitely recommend that you visit El Escorial if you are in Spain.
00:09:32.340
Now we are checking in briefly from Madrid and then you might ask me, compassionate one,
00:09:38.260
should I visit Madrid?
00:09:39.660
I would say that it should not be a priority.
00:09:41.840
You have certain nice things in Madrid.
00:09:43.960
You have the royal palace and you have some nice museums as well and you see this nice
00:09:49.220
fountain and some statues of Visigothic kings as well.
00:09:53.260
But otherwise Madrid is not something I would give priority.
00:09:56.800
The other smaller places outside of Madrid, they are more worth, I'd say, in my humble opinion
00:10:03.260
at least.
00:10:04.260
So you have here again El Escorial, you have Segovia, you have Toledo, San Ildefonso.
00:10:10.360
All of these places, a lot more beauty and a lot more culture.
00:10:13.900
And Madrid, it's like most European capitals, I would say it's not a particularly pleasant
00:10:20.320
place to be.
00:10:21.320
Now, if you do have the time, I would recommend a visit to the royal palace, but maybe a day
00:10:27.120
or two, that could be enough for a visit to Madrid if you are tight on time.
00:10:32.200
So thank you for watching, thank you for your support.
