In this episode, I discuss why I think The Old World is a much better setting than Age of Sigmar, and why it should be the preferred setting for new players. I also give some praise to Games Workshop for their decision to bring back the Old World.

00:00:00.000 Greetings, my esteemed subscribers, and greetings to everyone at Games Workshop.
00:00:08.000 Now, before I begin to elaborate, this video will be quite specific to those of you who are familiar with Warhammer.
00:00:16.000 If you're not, I would encourage you to check out some of my Total War Warhammer videos.
00:00:22.000 I have quite a few of those on my channel, so just search on the channel,
00:00:25.000 because I give an introduction to the lore somewhat good, I would say at least, in those videos.
00:00:32.000 So, check that out first, then if it sounds interesting, you can come back to this video
00:00:37.000 so you understand a bit better what I am talking about.
00:00:40.000 So, I've been a Warhammer fan for a very long time.
00:00:44.000 Actually, longer than I haven't been a Warhammer fan.
00:00:48.000 So, yeah, long time.
00:00:50.000 I used to play a lot of 7th and 8th edition as well, and, yeah, used to paint a bit.
00:00:55.000 Very nice hobby, very meditative.
00:00:58.000 So, yeah, as you can see before you, some of my work.
00:01:02.000 I sold most of it, but I kept some fine artifacts of mine.
00:01:08.000 So, anyway, in 2015 Games Workshop, who are the creators of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k and Horus Heresy.
00:01:16.000 I've talked a lot about Horus Heresy before, but now we're talking about Warhammer Fantasy.
00:01:21.000 So, they decided to destroy the old world, and the old world is what you see in Warhammer Total War, for example.
00:01:30.000 So, everything I've talked about is from the old world.
00:01:33.000 So, in 2015, they decided to destroy it to create a new setting.
00:01:37.000 Now, what happened was that Total War came out in the old setting, and everyone absolutely loved it.
00:01:45.000 A lot of new Warhammer fans came in to know about Warhammer.
00:01:50.000 Then Vermintide came out.
00:01:52.000 Then Chaosbane came out to computer games, also very popular.
00:01:56.000 So, now Games Workshop has decided to bring back the old world, which I am absolutely delighted to hear.
00:02:03.000 So, first and foremost to everyone at Games Workshop, thank you.
00:02:06.000 Absolutely correct decision.
00:02:08.000 And I would just like to mention something to everyone at Games Workshop here.
00:02:13.000 I've read a lot of Black Library books, a lot of books set in the old world.
00:02:17.000 And, yeah, I'm a fan, as I said.
00:02:20.000 Great books, especially Sigmar series, the Elven books as well.
00:02:24.000 And I would say that if you want to get as many people into reading the books or the hobby as possible,
00:02:33.000 the old world is a much more compelling and attractive setting than Age of Sigmar.
00:02:40.000 Because, if I want to introduce someone to Warhammer, say, my father or my wife or a friend, and they don't know anything at all.
00:02:51.000 In the old world, I can simply point to the empire, say, you know what, these guys are 16th century Germans. 0.93
00:02:59.000 And they are set in a very precarious situation.
00:03:04.000 They have chaos encroaching from one side.
00:03:07.000 They have Skaven attacking them from the under cities.
00:03:10.000 They have orcs invasions, etc.
00:03:13.000 Same thing if we're talking about Bretonnia.
00:03:15.000 Yeah, it's medieval France with a touch of Arthurian legend.
00:03:20.000 It's really easy to relate to.
00:03:23.000 It's really easy to find appealing.
00:03:26.000 Now, if you compare that with Age of Sigmar, I have a really hard time thinking that anyone finds this compelling.
00:03:35.000 Because it's not relatable and it's not realistic.
00:03:38.000 Now, we talk about fantasy and I say realistic.
00:03:41.000 What do I mean?
00:03:42.000 Yes, I do mean realistic in the sense that it is realistic in a grimdark way.
00:03:49.000 So, you might say, oh, is it realistic to have giant rats trying to kill you?
00:03:54.000 No, it's not.
00:03:55.000 But the point is that we're setting humans in a setting where everything is very hard, basically.
00:04:04.000 But it's still humans.
00:04:05.000 We're not trying to change the nature of humans.
00:04:07.000 And you can't really relate to a Stormcast Eternal.
00:04:10.000 You can't really relate to the structure of them.
00:04:13.000 I understand the urge of trying to appeal to as many people as possible.
00:04:16.000 Because then you have everyone say, oh, I'm represented here.
00:04:20.000 But you also miss a very important aspect of what makes the games and the setting so intriguing.
00:04:26.000 So, I would encourage you to not go down that road. 0.72
00:04:31.000 Because people aren't stupid either. 0.99
00:04:33.000 Your customers aren't stupid. 1.00
00:04:35.000 Potential customers aren't stupid. 0.98
00:04:37.000 They will see if you promote this sort of everyone fits in. 0.64
00:04:42.000 That sort of narrative, that sort of setting, you will only turn off people.
00:04:47.000 Because it's not intriguing in the least.
00:04:49.000 You will attract people with a cool, epic, grimdark setting as the old world has shown.
00:04:56.000 So, yeah.
00:04:58.000 That's my take on that situation.
00:05:00.000 And I will give some high praise to everyone at Games Workshop here.
00:05:04.000 Everyone at Black Library.
00:05:05.000 I view you as the heirs of Tolkien.
00:05:09.000 I view you as your world, Warhammer world, as the natural heir of Tolkien's work.
00:05:16.000 For me, it was the same thing.
00:05:17.000 I got into Lord of the Rings when I was younger.
00:05:20.000 And then I thought, oh, these elves are cool, etc.
00:05:23.000 I wanted more epic stories, basically.
00:05:25.000 So, then I went to Warhammer Fantasy.
00:05:28.000 So, people want classic elves.
00:05:30.000 People want classic dwarves. 0.91
00:05:32.000 They want the Empire.
00:05:33.000 They want Bretonnia.
00:05:35.000 They want Tomb Kings.
00:05:36.000 Tomb Kings are, well, undead ancient Egyptians, basically. 0.91
00:05:41.000 Very relatable.
00:05:43.000 Very cool.
00:05:44.000 Everyone, I'm certain, when reading up on ancient Egypt, felt a certain intriguing sensation.
00:05:52.000 And the fact that you can play almost them.
00:05:55.000 The same thing as you can be almost the Aztecs in Being Listen Men.
00:06:01.000 It's a very attractive thing.
00:06:03.000 So, anyway.
00:06:04.000 The point of this rambling is that do keep, do promote the old world. 0.87
00:06:09.000 Go back to the old world. 1.00
00:06:10.000 People want it much more than they want the Age of Sigmar setting.
00:06:14.000 That being said, I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with the Age of Sigmar setting.
00:06:19.000 I'm just saying from a long-time fan and admirer of the lore and the setting, this is my perspective.
00:06:28.000 And, yeah, for my own personal ulterior motive here as well, it's because I want more books in the old world.
00:06:36.000 I want more games in the old world.
00:06:38.000 So, Vermintide, for example.
00:06:40.000 I want there to be a third Vermintide, where you can play in third-person view as well.
00:06:46.000 Now, speaking of Vermintide, I would like to give a shout-out to one of my oldest and truest of friends, Natty Pete.
00:06:53.000 I mentioned this in this video because, A, I mentioned painting and, B, I mentioned Vermintide and he is my companion when I play Vermintide.
00:07:03.000 So, yeah, we play Vermintide together and he painted this for me as a belated birthday gift.
00:07:15.000 So, it's a painting of me and my daughter based on this photography.
00:07:22.000 So, I just wanted to have that said in this video since I mentioned Vermintide and, yeah, I will link him this video.
00:07:29.000 So, thank you again, Natty Pete.
00:07:31.000 Anyway, back to Warhammer setting.
00:07:35.000 Please do continue the old world. 0.93
00:07:37.000 Now, that being said, I would just like to mention the gaming aspect.
00:07:41.000 It would be absolutely great if you do not have square bases.
00:07:45.000 But if you create movement trays where you can place models with round bases.
00:07:50.000 So, you can use models both in Age of Sigmar and in the old world style of tabletop gaming.
00:08:01.000 So, you have the skirmish type of game and you also have the classic strategy game.
00:08:08.000 So, that was my thoughts.
00:08:10.000 I just wanted to share this epic news with everyone.
00:08:14.000 And, yeah, for anyone at Games Workshop, I hope you take my advice on board.
00:08:21.000 And, yeah, thank you for watching.
00:08:23.000 XOXO.
00:08:24.000 Poo! 0.58
